1. Walking With Wisdom2. Always Being Filled3. Living a Life of JoyToday's sermon explored what it means to truly "look ahead" as believers living in what the Bible calls the Last Days. We examined how the signs around us—increasing lawlessness, wars and rumors of wars, the rise of secularism, and the rejection of absolute truth—all point to Christ's imminent return. Rather than causing us to live in fear or depression, this reality should awaken us to live with purpose, wisdom, and joy. We explored three key areas: walking with wisdom in a spiritually sleeping world, being continually filled with the Holy Spirit's power, and living a life characterized by genuine joy and thanksgiving. Let us examine whether we're wasting our lives on temporary things or investing in eternity, and to make ourselves available as instruments in God's hands during these critical days.Takeaways:- Wake up and walk with wisdom. We cannot afford to be spiritually asleep while the world around us abandons God. We must be alert, making the most of our time, understanding that tomorrow is not guaranteed. The question we must ask ourselves is: Are we allowing our faith to breathe and come alive, or is it confined to Sunday mornings? God desires all people to be saved, and we must be His voice of reason and warning to those around us.- Be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. While we receive the Holy Spirit at conversion, we need regular "refills" of His power and influence in our lives. This means dying to ourselves, surrendering to God's will, pursuing purity, and not grieving the Spirit through habitual sin. We must examine our hearts honestly: Is there anything—even "good things" like hobbies or sports—that is consuming our time and robbing us of becoming who God has called us to be? Don't waste or squander your high calling.- Live with overflowing joy and thanksgiving. When we are filled with the Spirit, joy naturally flows from our lives. We encourage one another, sing praises to the Lord, and give thanks in all circumstances. This isn't manufactured happiness but the fruit of being refreshed by God's power and ready to be used by Him. Our joy becomes a testimony to others and creates a welcoming atmosphere that draws people to Christ. As we look ahead to Christ's return, let's not be found sleeping. Let's make every day count for eternity, continually seeking fresh anointing from the Holy Spirit, and living with a joy that can only come from knowing our redemption draws near.May the Lord bless you and keep you this week as you walk in His wisdom and power.

On today's Consumer Finance Monitor podcast, we are releasing an episode about a timely and wide-ranging discussion on one of the most significant and fastest-evolving developments in commercial finance: the rapid "consumerization" of small business lending law. In this episode, host Alan Kaplinsky welcomes Louis Caditz-Peck, Executive Director of the Responsible Business Lending Coalition (RBLC), for an in-depth conversation about the proliferation of state small business lending protection statutes, the policy debates driving them, and what they mean for lenders, fintechs, banks, and small business borrowers. From Self-Regulation to State Law: How We Got Here For decades, commercial lending operated under a fundamentally different regulatory framework than consumer credit. The prevailing assumption was that business borrowers were sophisticated, negotiated their transactions, and did not need standardized disclosures or suitability-type protections. That assumption has eroded. As Louis explains, since the financial crisis, and particularly with the growth of online and fintech lending, small business financing has changed dramatically. Community banks have pulled back. Non-bank online platforms have expanded. New products, including merchant cash advances and other revenue-based financing arrangements, have proliferated. At the same time, concerns have grown about: Opaque pricing structures Misleading "interest rate" representations Broker incentives that steer borrowers into higher-cost products Repeated refinancing of unaffordable obligations These concerns led to the development of the Small Business Borrower's Bill of Rights, a set of industry standards first launched in 2015 at the Aspen Institute by a coalition of lenders, small business groups, and nonprofit advocates. What began as a voluntary, self-regulatory effort quickly became a blueprint for legislation. California's SB 1235 in 2018 marked the first major small business truth-in-lending law. Since then, according to Louis, 19 small business financial protection laws have been enacted across multiple states, with California and New York leading the way. The "Consumerization" of Small Business Lending A central theme of the episode is whether we are witnessing the "consumerization" of small business lending. Many of the new state laws borrow heavily from consumer credit concepts, including: APR-style cost disclosures Total cost of financing disclosures Payment schedule requirements Prepayment and fee transparency Restrictions on certain contractual provisions Some states have layered on licensing or registration requirements for small business finance providers. Others incorporate or supplement state UDAP (unfair and deceptive acts and practices) standards, which may apply to certain business-to-business transactions as well as consumer transactions. The policy rationale is straightforward: many "Main Street" businesses are effectively sole proprietorships or closely-held operations without in-house finance or legal teams. Legislators increasingly view these borrowers as closer to consumers than to large corporations with treasury departments and inside or outside counsel. As Alan and Louis discuss, the regulatory shift raises serious operational and compliance challenges, particularly given the state-by-state patchwork of requirements. The Compliance Conundrum: Patchwork and Harmonization A recurring concern is whether the proliferation of state laws imposes disproportionate burdens on smaller lenders and startups, especially compared to large institutions with robust legal and compliance infrastructures. Louis emphasizes that RBLC has actively worked to promote interstate harmonization, particularly between California and New York. For example: Advocating for standardized disclosure forms that can be used in multiple states Aligning definitions and disclosure triggers Encouraging estimated APR calculations for revenue-based financing However, not all states have followed a harmonized approach. Some laws, particularly those focused narrowly on merchant cash advances, have created divergent requirements, complicating multi-state compliance. As Alan notes, the trend presents both risk and opportunity for lenders and their counsel. The regulatory environment is no longer static. Companies offering small business financing must assume that: Cost disclosures will likely be required in more states Registration or licensing may apply Enforcement risk—particularly under state UDAP statutes—will increase Section 1071 and Federal Uncertainty The episode also explores the role of the CFPB under Section 1071 of the Dodd-Frank Act, which requires data collection on small business lending to: 1. Identify potential discrimination, and 2. Assess whether certain markets are underserved. The CFPB finalized its 1071 rule in 2023 under then Director Rohit Chopra. Multiple legal challenges followed. Under the current administration, a notice of proposed rulemaking has sought to scale back and slow implementation. At the same time, the Federal Trade Commission has signaled an interest in using its enforcement authority to address unfair or deceptive acts or practices affecting small businesses—underscoring an intriguing tension within federal regulatory policy. As Louis observes, the debate is not simply about reducing or expanding government. It is about how government authority will be used and whether transparency and enforcement will be advanced through rulemaking, litigation, or state initiatives. Merchant Cash Advances and Revenue-Based Financing A particularly nuanced part of the discussion focuses on merchant cash advances (MCAs) and other sales-based financing products. These arrangements typically involve: An advance of funds in exchange for a fixed repayment amount Payments tied to a percentage of daily or periodic sales Variable duration depending on business performance RBLC's position, as Louis explains, is product neutral. The coalition does not advocate banning product categories or imposing rate caps. Instead, it focuses on responsible practices, including transparent pricing and assessment of ability to repay. Importantly, none of the major state lending protection laws impose interest rate caps. The emphasis is on disclosure and market transparency rather than price regulation. Who Is Covered—and Who Is Not? Most state small business truth-in-lending statutes apply to financing of $500,000 or less (with some variation, such as New York's $2.5 million threshold following gubernatorial revision). Coverage often includes: Closed-end loans Open-end lines of credit Sales-based financing/MCAs Factoring (in some states) Banks are generally exempt from these statutes, though non-bank "providers" presenting the offer of credit may still have disclosure obligations even in bank partnership models. As Alan highlights, this raises interesting competitive and policy questions about level playing fields across banks and non-banks. Looking Ahead to 2026 Both speakers agree: this trend is not going away. With significant percentages of small business owners reporting difficulty accessing affordable capital—and a substantial minority reporting harm from predatory practices—state legislators remain motivated to act. The key policy question is not whether regulation will expand, but how. Well-designed transparency frameworks can: Promote price competition Reward responsible innovation Improve borrower decision-making Poorly harmonized or overly rigid frameworks, however, risk increasing compliance costs and reducing credit availability. As Alan notes in his closing remarks, small business finance regulation is becoming a core area of growth for law firms and compliance professionals historically focused on consumer financial services. The line between consumer and commercial finance continues to blur. Alan noted that the Consumer Financial Services Group which he founded and chaired for 25 years has counseled and represented small business lenders for decades. For lenders, fintechs, banks, and their advisors, understanding these developments is no longer optional—it is essential. Consumer Finance Monitor is hosted by Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel at Ballard Spahr, and the founder and former chair of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Group. We encourage listeners to subscribe to the podcast on their preferred platform for weekly insights into developments in the consumer finance industry.

This week in our yearly update message, Jake reminded us that the church is not a building, staff, or Sunday service, but a people called to actively participate in God's work of making and growing disciples. He highlighted the importance of engagement over passive attendance, generosity rooted in stewardship, and a shared commitment to both local and global mission. While structure helps support ministry, true spiritual life happens as each person chooses to participate in relationships, service, giving, and discipleship. The call is clear: don't just attend church — be the church.

Roggio describes these areas as safe havens with training camps and weapons depots, noting that Somalia is also largely under Al-Qaeda control via Al-Shabaab.1836 BEIRUT

In this inspiring episode of the Positive Aging Community podcast, co-hosts Steve Gurney and Margaret Foster, editor of The Beacon Newspapers, sit down with author Marilyn Raichle to discuss her book "Don't Walk Away: A Care Partner's Journey". They dive into Marilyn's heartfelt story of transforming from a reluctant caregiver to a joyful care partner for her mother, Jean, who lived with dementia until age 96.Key Highlights:The Journey Begins (0:00-5:00): Marilyn shares her Seattle roots and her mother's stark advice: "When we get Alzheimer's, walk away." But after her father's passing, a moment of humor sparked a deeper connection, shifting Marilyn from "caregiver" to "care partner"—focusing on building a shared, fulfilling life rather than just providing help. The Power of Art and Community (5:00-15:00): Discover how a simple painting class at Jean's continuing care facility unlocked astonishing creativity. Marilyn founded "The Art of Alzheimer's" to showcase her mom's vibrant works, challenging stereotypes: "Alzheimer's is scary, art isn't." She integrated into the community, gaining "six new moms" and finding relaxation and joy in visits filled with laughter and Scrabble games.Lessons in Humanity and Growth (15:00-25:00): Marilyn offers wisdom for caregivers: Start with 5 minutes of shared joy, listen without needing to "win," and recognize that people with dementia are still fully human—needing purpose, friends, and love. Her experience made her a "happier person," teaching emotional openness despite her Scottish Calvinist upbringing.Looking Ahead (25:00-End): Marilyn now works with Maude's Awards, granting $100,000 annually for Alzheimer's innovations (applications open March 13th—organizations, individuals, for-profits, or nonprofits welcome!). She hopes her book shifts societal views, showing dementia as a life worth living. This episode flips the script on caregiving burdens, emphasizing hope, humor, and humanity. As Marilyn says, "If they're 'gone,' who's there? It's somebody well worth getting to know."Get Involved:Buy the Book: Grab Don't Walk Away on Amazon or visit the official site. https://dontwalkaway.net/Maude's Awards: Learn more and apply at maudesawards.org.#PositiveAging #CaregivingJourney #DementiaCare
Matthew 5:13-20[Jesus said,] “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how can it's saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, and is thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill can not be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket, but places it on the lampstand where it gives light to all in the house. Let your light shine before others, therefore, so that they might see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven.“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets, for I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter – not one stroke of a letter – will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever does them and teaches them, will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For truly I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” I got to spend a couple of days this week at the annual reunion of the Wabash Pastoral Leadership Program, in Crawfordsville, which is always a real boon for my spirit and sense of call, and reminder of why church work and ministry matters so much in the world, these days – and the impact we can have when we get it right. For those of you who don't know/remember, the Wabash Pastoral Leadership Program is a Lilly Endowment-funded endeavor that gathers small groups of Christian clergy from around Indiana for a two-year program of study, learning, and travel, that connects pastors with each other and with civic leaders from around the state to broaden the scope of what congregations can accomplish in the world, in whatever context they find themselves. For those of you who've been around awhile, you might remember that I was part of the first cohort of the program back in 2009-2010. (I would spend a few days, every other month at Wabash College and take a couple of international trips thanks to the program.)Anyway, the program hosts annual reunions for the pastors who've engaged it over the years, and that's where I was for about 48 hours last week. As part of it all, some of our colleagues shared, with the rest of us, some of the work they've been up to in their various settings and communities.A couple of pastors in New Albany teamed up the past couple of summers to establish a ministry of “cooling stations,” hosted by a handful of churches in their town … places where house-less people and families – rather than hiding in the public library or wading in the creek on the edge of town to keep cool – could find air-conditioned shelter, safety, and water when the temperatures reach 100 degrees or more. This is what kingdom welcome and hospitality looks like – on earth as it is in heaven.Another pastor's congregation does the opposite. Over at West Morris Free Methodist Church on the westside of Indy, they have a very traditional 60,000 square foot building with a sanctuary that seats close to 1,000 people, though they only worship about 40, these days. So, they removed all of their empty wooden pews, filled their space with tents, and house nearly 80-100 house-less people when temperatures are too dangerously cold to sleep outside. What used to look like this: now looks like this: Of course, they feed them and care for them in other ways, too. It's still very obviously a sanctuary, maybe more now than ever before, and this is what the fullness of the kingdom tastes like when we get it right. A friend from my own cohort – Kent Ellet, the Pastor at the Speedway Church of Christ and his congregation – have bought and rehabbed three houses in recent years on Alton Avenue, near their church. They're working on their fourth, as we speak. Once they are ready, they rent these houses at half the cost – or less – to individuals and families who need stable housing and other support, in order to get back on their feet after all manner of struggle, difficulty, bad luck, and whatnot. My friend Kent calls this ministry the “Alton Alternative” and it is a light of grace, sitting high on a lampstand, shining brightly for all in those houses – and their surrounding neighborhood, and now all of us – to see. When Jesus tells the crowds on the hillside in this morning's Gospel that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, he was trying to get them to think differently about the kind of light and flavor their faith brings to the world around them. And, I happen to think, he was inviting them to get creative about that for a change … to wonder differently about what kind of difference they might make … to imagine ways their faith was inviting them to be a blessing for the world.“You are the salt of the earth,” he tells them. “But if salt has lost its taste – if you have lost your flavor – what good is that? What are you doing here? What's the point of it all?”“You are the light of the world,” Jesus says. “Like a city on a hill… like a lamp on a stand… like a beacon in the night. Don't cover yourselves up… don't hide under a basket. Let your light shine so others can see what you're up to; so people know what God is doing through you… and for you… and for the sake of others.”Now, I happen to think we have so much to be glad about and plenty to celebrate and even a little to be proud of when it comes to how we do Church here, in this place, especially when I think of the very unique voice Cross of Grace is in our community. No one else is welcoming, advocating for, and hosting events that support our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and neighbors. No one else is preaching and teaching and hosting ministry that supports anti-racism and racial justice the way we do.We have $45,000 to give away from our Building and Outreach Fund grants thanks to our generosity over the course of the last year. (Please spread the word to your favorite non-profit organizations to apply for those grants before the end of March.)And I hope, as we continue to wonder about this building project that's on the horizon we'll get creative about all of this salt and light stuff in ways my Wabash friends have done. And just to get your wheels spinning, you should know I have started a conversation with our schools about a reading program for kids in our area for whom English isn't their primary language. For those of you who know about the HOSTS program that already exists in our elementary schools, imagine that but for immigrant kids who speak Spanish or Haitian Creole. (I just learned we are blessed to have literally hundreds of them in our school district.)Pastor Cogan has ideas about Cross of Grace hosting a summer day camp for kids who can't afford the kinds of camps many of us send our kids to when they're not in school.Maybe we could be a cooling center … or a warming station … or let our parking lot be a safe place for people living in their cars to park for the night. We could certainly host more and bigger special events for places like The Landing. We could host more 12 Step meetings; expand our food pantry operations; you get the idea …All of this is about not getting bored – or becoming boring – or losing our flavor – or letting our light dim – or hiding it under a bushel basket of complacency or apathy or selfishness or comfort or safety or whatever tempts too many Christians to stop doing God's bidding. All of this is about being as inspired as we are unsettled by those words from the prophet Isaiah this morning – words that surely inspired and unsettled Jesus, too… all of that stuff about loosing the bonds of injustice; about letting the oppressed go free; about sharing bread with the hungry; bringing the homeless poor into our house; covering the naked, and all the rest.So let's pray about and plan a future together, full of hope about the ways we can salt the earth and light up the world – with all that Isaiah promised and all that Jesus embodies:hope that our light – that the light of God – will break forth like the dawn;hope that our healing – that the healing of humanity – will spring up quickly;hope that our vindicator will go before us, and the glory of the Lord will have our back;hope that we will call and God will answer;hope that our needs will be satisfied even in parched places;Let's be hopeful – and full of faith – that, as God's people, we will be known and seen and received, like a spring of water for the thirsty, like rebuilt ruins for those in need of refuge, like a firm foundation for those who can't stand on their own; like a repairer of the breach for the broken among us, and like a restorer of streets to live in for a world searching for home.Amen

What if the defining feature of nonprofit leadership right now isn't burnout or bravery, but a kind of double vision—an ability to stare straight at worsening conditions and still believe, perhaps stubbornly, that impact can grow?As we launch season twelve of Mission Forward, Carrie Fox sits down with Stacy Palmer (CEO of the Chronicle of Philanthropy) and Brian Fox (Chief Strategy Officer of Mission Partners) to unpack the 2026 Insights on Purpose™ Report, built from interviews and a national survey of nonprofit and foundation leaders. The numbers land with a thud: nearly everyone says the environment is harder than it was a year ago, and yet large majorities still think their organizations can increase impact over the next five years. This is not optimism in the syrupy greeting-card sense. It's optimism as a job requirement—paired with a private ledger of worries about cash on hand, staff departures, restructuring, and the creeping sense that “resilience” is something we describe more easily than we actually feel.So this week, we look at what nonprofit and foundation leaders are really carrying right now—what they'll say out loud, what they'll admit in private, and why the gap between those two versions matters. This is the story of confidence and strain living in the same institutional body. About “resilience” as something everyone invokes, but fewer people can define in a way that survives contact with payroll, boards, and the calendar. About why planning feels harder when the ground won't stop shifting—and why the answer probably isn't a bigger plan, but a different relationship to planning altogether. If you're leading an organization, funding one, serving on a board, or simply trying to understand why so many leaders sound calm while feeling anything but, this episode gives you a lens—and a few powerful questions worth keeping close. The report, in their telling, isn't a stack of charts. It's a set of voices—unfiltered—trying to say what's happening before the sector pays for it in closures, mergers, and communities left without the organizations they rely on.Our great thanks to the Chronicle of Philanthropy for their partnership in bringing this report to life. We hope you'll take the time to read and share it broadly.
