Art is one of those things that is not clearly defined. Sure some people might think it is because they might view it narrowly as only something that hangs in a gallery by a painter who has studied for years. But that is not what art is. And murals are helping to prove that as artists take their art to the street. We are fortunate here in NEPA to have many colorful murals in Scranton and the surrounding area--so many that one local artist, teacher and doctoral candidate chose to do her research about murals in the area and how people in the communities connect to them. My guest this week is Lisa Murphy, an arts teacher in Hazleton, a mom, an artist herself and a student of Point Park University who will display the results of a summer research project with a reception at Afa Gallery on October 19. The art will remain on display after the opening. Tune in to hear our conversation about the importance of community art, how it reflects a region's history and hope for the future and the importance of having everyone represented in such art. In Episode 51, we talk with Tsunami Self Defense founder and sensei Robert Thomas and assistant instructor Megan Brosky to raise awareness about everyday violence and the need for self-defense in an unfortunately violent world. Robert discusses his extensive martial arts training, the moment that changed his life that made him switch to teaching more practical self-defense techniques, what Tsunami Self Defense is and where the name comes from, the Girls on Guard system and empowering women to defend themselves and escape bad situations, the warning signs of physical and mental abuse, the importance of understanding consent, local examples of violence and why there may be an increase in violent acts, sobering statistics and being realistic about violence that can happen any time without fear-mongering, teaching everyone from children to seniors, presenting at colleges and why it is difficult to get into high schools despite the need for this type of education, and being a funeral director in Taylor. Megan also explains how she went from student to teacher and describes what it is like to work with women as a social worker and as an instructor. Lauren delivers her Rapid-Fire Qs, and in The Last word segment, we get into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of past and present and how pop culture and Hollywood can be misleading in its portrayal of martial arts, despite how entertaining it can be. We emphasize what self-defense really is, and after we wrap up, Megan gives Mark a first-hand demonstration in the studio. To learn more about Tsunami Self Defense (418 S. Main St., Rear, Taylor), call 570-562-2579 or e-mail 570dojo@gmail.com. Girls on Guard classes are being held on Wednesday, March 9 at the AfA Gallery (514 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton) and Monday, March 21 at the old location of the CVS Pharmacy (107 8th St., Honesdale). As part of the 2015 Electric City Music Conference, NEPA Scene presented a “State of the Scene” panel discussion in front of a live audience at the AfA Gallery in downtown Scranton on Saturday, Sept. 19. Moderated by Mark Dennebaum, president and owner of TwentyFiveEight Studios in Scranton and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast, the former and current state of the Northeastern Pennsylvania music scene is discussed, problems are addressed, and creative solutions are offered. Towards the end of the program, they take questions from the audience. The panelists are Rich Howells, Joe Caviston, and Greg Shaffer. Rich Howells is an award-winning journalist, blogger, podcaster, poet, and photographer from Scranton. Covering the local arts and entertainment scene for over six years, he is the founder and editor of NEPA Scene, host of the NEPA Scene’s Got Talent open mic and talent contest, and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast. He has also performed his original poetry at First Night Scranton, Scranton Zine Fest, Synaesthesia Social with improvised musical accompaniment, and at many local venues, including the F.M. Kirby Center. Joe Caviston is the co-producer of the Electric City Music Conference and the Steamtown Music Awards and recently co-founded Meat and Potato Productions. He has been part of the Scranton music scene for 15 years and has worked in the music industry in one form or another for the last 10 years. As the former owner of Burnt Carbon Productions, he promoted concerts at Fagan’s, Tink’s, Crocodile Rock Cafe, the Sherman Theater, and various other venues throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey from 2005-2008. He also spent time working with East Coast Independent Concerts, which allowed him to work with legendary music festivals like the Vans Warped Tour and Bamboozle. Additionally, Caviston had a part in the music festivals Big Giant and the Extravaganza and Heart On Fest and served on the advisory board of the original Steamtown Original Music Showcase. Greg Shaffer owns and operates NEPA-based promotion company Glory Torch Productions, which specializes in live music, DJs, event planning, and stage management. Glory Torch is rapidly becoming the go-to entity in the area for emerging and established artists alike to get their music heard in front of a crowd.

Scranton improv comedy group Here We Are In Spain makes Episode 16 one of our funniest shows yet. Five of the six members of the group join us – Brit Giblin, Don McGlynn, Rob Klubeck, Jonathan Maier, and Patrick Martin – to discuss different types of comedy and why they chose improvisation, how they are able to craft their humor on the spot, the friendships that came from working together, how they’re been received by NEPA audiences, acting in local shows and films, and their monthly shows at the AfA Gallery that have grown into a steady following. Football, Bill O’Reilly, penguins, the former pope, and other random subjects end up in there somewhere, too. As always, the show is uncensored, but this one gets particularly raunchy, so it’s not for the easily offended! In The Last Word segment, we hear from readers who attended our successful NEPA Scene Mid-Winter Showcase event last week and read some of the varying reactions we get whenever we post about Breaking Benjamin. Professionally recorded every Monday at The Stude in TwentyFiveEight Studios in Scranton and released exclusively on nepascene.com every Tuesday, the NEPA Scene Podcast is a free supplement to the website, expanding on the arts and entertainment stories covered on the site and going beyond them to discuss other news and entertainment topics.
