Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! We're joined by Coach Matt Doherty from DohertyCoaching.com to talk about the tensions in Charlotte and the remarkable longevity of LeBron James. Coach Doherty reflects on the recent protests and unrest in Charlotte, noting that while the situation is disappointing, it’s not surprising for a major city dealing with complex political and legal issues. He emphasizes that the law is the law, and although many undocumented individuals contribute positively to the community, the city must still navigate safety concerns, economic impacts, and the real dangers connected to human trafficking. Shifting to basketball, Coach Doherty marvels at LeBron James beginning his record-setting 23rd NBA season. He compares LeBron’s durability and discipline to earlier eras, recalling stories from Michael Jordan’s early career when players traveled under far less glamorous conditions. Doherty applauds LeBron’s incredible work ethic, physical conditioning, and ability to compete at an elite level despite now sharing the court with teammates who weren’t even born when he entered the league. Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about the turbulent political moment the country is facing and the mindset he believes Americans must reclaim to survive it. He dives into the headlines of the day, but quickly pivots to a broader warning: the nation is becoming distracted, divided, and dangerously dependent on politics instead of productivity. Brett argues that too many people expect Washington to fix their problems while ignoring the discipline, creativity, and grit that built America in the first place. "Come on boys, you gotta choose your weapon: J-45 or AK-47", lautet die erste Zeile. Would you fight a war, or start a band? Die Gewalt – oder die Kraft des Wortes, des Dialogs, des Trosts?„Would you pick up a gun or a guitar? Would you fight a war or start a band?“Christlich erinnert zu gedenken heißt: das Leid nicht zu leugnen – aber auch nicht das letzte Wort zu lassen. Es heißt, die Wahrheit auszusprechen, aber nicht den Glauben zu verlieren. Und es heißt, daran festzuhalten, dass das Licht in der Finsternis leuchtet – und die Finsternis es nicht auslöschen kann. (Joh 1,5) – Also gründet Bands, singt Songs für das Leben. In March 1844, the quiet community of Culdaff in north Donegal was rocked by the brutal murder of fourteen-year-old servant Mary Doherty. As the Great Hunger loomed on the horizon, Mary's tragic death was soon overshadowed by famine and emigration, her story fading into fragments of local folklore. However, in recent years, historian Angela Byrne has brought renewed attention to Mary's forgotten life and this dark chapter in our history. In this episode, Angela Byrne joins Fin Dwyer to discuss the history behind Mary's murder, as detailed in her new book Finding Mary. Angela vividly reconstructs the community Mary grew up in, the background to her murder, and the reasons she was killed. The episode also explores the world of rural Donegal on the eve of the tragedy and asks why Mary Doherty's story remained untold for generations. You can get Angela's book, Finding Mary, at https://www.fourcourtspress.ie/books/2025/finding-mary.Sound by Kate Dunlea. In Can't Hardly Wait, a graduating class gathers for one unforgettable night — a chaotic, emotional, and often hilarious collision of cliques, identities, and expectations. Beneath the 90s nostalgia and party anthems, the film poses a timeless question for educators: how do young people find belonging and purpose in a world so quick to label and divide them? Through characters like Preston, Amanda, and Denise, we see the tension between perception and authenticity — between who students think they should be and who they truly are. The movie reminds us that every learner is in their own process of discovery, and that connection and empathy can transform even the most uncertain transitions into opportunities for growth. On this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Carla Cummins and new co-host Jessica Westerduin sit down with Jay Doherty to unpack what Can't Hardly Wait reveals about identity, belonging, and the powerful role educators play in helping students write their next chapter with confidence and hope. Takeaways: Every student carries a story beyond the surface — belonging starts when educators listen deeply. Transitional moments, like graduation, can spark reflection, growth, and the courage to reinvent oneself. Schools that embrace diversity of thought, emotion, and identity prepare students for more than success — they prepare them for life. When educators foster genuine connection, they help students see that they're already enough, just as they are. About Jay Doherty: Jay Doherty is a K–12 Design Principal, Project Architect, and Certified Educational Planner (ALEP) at Lavallee Brensinger Architects in New England. He is passionate about designing educational and inspiring spaces that nurture the next generation of thinkers and doers. Jay's favorite place to be is at the intersection of art and science—a place where creativity and logic meet. He finds joy in the balance between these disciplines, whether it's expressed through thoughtful architecture, a well-composed piece of music, a carefully crafted beverage, or a beautifully made film. In addition to his work as an educational architect, Jay is a dedicated film enthusiast and critic. One of the values that we have at Uplift Kids is helping families be intentional together, and this can look many, many different ways. Without *some* intentional time, there can be drifting apart and a lack of meaning. So we wanted to talk about ways to be intentional. One of the sources that we've pulled from in this episode is a book called The Intentional Family by a family therapist named William Doherty. Doherty talks about the need to balance rigidity and flexibility. This approach — an approach that might be called a "wisdom approach" — is something that we explore and hold to consistently at Uplift Kids. It's a "both-and" approach rather than an "either-or" approach. And so the idea here is that we want to find a way to have a bit of structure and flexibility, meaning *some* time together. In this episode we explore ways to make intentional time together.

What if instilling the faith in our youth was not simply about ensuring they attend Mass and check off the sacrament boxes? What if instead we shared the faith on a more intimate level, bringing in faith and fun through a more engaging medium? Kelsey has piloted an incredible youth program for teens to encourage them to encounter Christ on a more personal and frequent basis. Catholic Pathfinders has been designed to equip our teens far beyond their Confirmation, so they will have a lifelong journey of following Jesus Christ! To Learn More:www.catholicpathfinders.comHave an episode idea you want to hear about? Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! We're joined by Coach Matt Doherty from DohertyCoaching.com to talk about leadership, morality, and the state of our nation following the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk. In a candid and emotionally grounded conversation, Coach Doherty reflects on the growing cultural and moral void in America. He emphasizes the importance of fundamentals—faith, family, and personal accountability—as the foundation of both strong individuals and a healthy republic. Drawing from his coaching background and upbringing, Doherty discusses the role of religion, discipline, and community in building character. He raises concerns about the celebration of violence and political division, questioning whether the country can still come together across ideological lines. Through it all, he encourages people to return to “old school values,” to be present for their children, and to lead lives rooted in decency and purpose. Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about the moral decay of society and the failure of modern parenting. With passionate urgency, he questions where today's troubled youth come from, ultimately placing the blame on a culture of neglect, permissiveness, and avoidance of responsibility. He criticizes the “self-raising child plan,” calling out parents who let television and the streets do the raising. Brett argues that society’s dysfunction stems from individuals abandoning basic values and accountability. Over the last couple of months, tragedy has struck two MA families unexpectedly. At the end of June, a UMass Amherst student who was interning in D.C. got caught up in a violent act as an innocent bystander who was murdered. Two teenagers have been charged with Eric Tarpinian-Jachym's murder. Then, in August, a Shrewsbury father was murdered on his way home after dropping his 6-year-old son off at school. Kevin Doherty confronted a man he saw spray-painting graffiti, to which the two men got into a spat where the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Doherty, who tragically died from his injuries. We discussed the senseless acts of violence as of late, felt here in Massachusetts.
In this episode, we're chatting with Morgan Doherty, realtor and self-admitted townie, about her native South Shore. The unsolved murders of Phyllis Murphy, Patricia Furlong, Angie Smith, Inga Hauser, and Patricia Doherty span over a decade of heartbreak and mystery across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Each woman vanished under everyday circumstances—waiting for a bus, leaving a pub, walking home from a concert, arriving in a new country, or shopping for Christmas gifts—only to be found brutally murdered in remote locations. Despite witness accounts, forensic evidence, and public appeals, justice has remained elusive in most of these cases, leaving families and communities grappling with grief and unanswered questions. Their stories endure as chilling reminders of lives stolen and the urgent need for resolution. If you have any information about these cases, please contact the Gardai at 1800 666 111, you can leave an anonymous tip.
