Der tumben KI-Beschwerdestelle kann man vortragen, was man will. Man zahlt schließlich entnervt beides. Scams aren't what they used to be. These days, AI can write perfect emails, mimic voices, and even fake a video call so well you'd swear you were talking to the real person. The problem is, the timing of a scam can be just right when you're distracted, busy, or looking for exactly what they're offering. That's when even the most careful person can get caught. My guest, Ritesh Kotak, knows this world inside and out. He's a cybersecurity analyst, an Ontario lawyer, and a tech innovator who's worked with Fortune 500 companies and served in policing, where he helped start one of Canada's first municipal cybercrime units. He's got a BBA, MBA, and JD, all focused on privacy, cybercrime, and the way emerging tech impacts everyday life. In our conversation, Ritesh explains how criminals are using AI as a weapon, how it can also be a shield, and why simple, low-tech steps, like having a secret phrase with family or confirming a request through a different channel, are still some of the best defenses. He even shares a close call he had himself, which is a good reminder that nobody's immune when scams are this convincing. Show Notes: [00:50] Ritesh shares his background as a lawyer helping clients navigate AI, tech, and cybercrime. [01:18] His fascination with technology began at age three after taking apart his father's computer. [03:59] In policing, Ritesh saw early signs of cybercrime blending with physical crime. [06:55] He demonstrates cybersecurity risks by live hacking a police chief, leading to the creation of a cybercrime unit. [09:16] A near-miss phishing scam involving discounted amusement park tickets highlights how timing plays a role. [15:14] Spoofed calls and evolving scam tactics make detection harder despite telecom safeguards. [17:09] Ritesh explains AI as both a sword for criminals and a shield for protection. [20:00] Generative AI enables flawless phishing emails, fake websites, and realistic deepfake audio and video. [28:00] Simple defenses like secret phrases and multi-channel verification can stop many scams. [31:45] Reporting scams to police can help investigations and sometimes recover funds. [33:17] Ritesh advocates for centralized fraud response centers to improve victim support. [36:45] Calling a lawyer can help victims navigate legal and civil remedies. [38:05] Final advice: pause, verify, and use low-tech habits to prevent high-tech crime. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. Or, jamais l'archipel n'a accueilli autant de touristes étrangers. Who's to blame for the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake & Tsunami? This week, The Alarmist (Rebecca Delgado Smith) discusses the massive earthquake that rocked the floor of the Indian Ocean in 2004 and triggered deadly tsunamis which raced across the ocean and wiped out entire villages and took the lives of people living and vacationing hundreds of miles away. Could an official warning system have prevented such a massive loss of life? Did a lack of public awareness about tsunamis in this region contribute to the overall destruction? And have we all forgotten that we're still just creatures existing in the wild? Fact Checker Chris Smith and Producer Clayton Early join the conversation. The tsunami warning that hit the Oregon coast earlier this month triggered more than just alarms — it revealed deeper cracks in the state’s emergency response system. For two state representatives who are helping lead efforts to modernize how Oregon prepares for natural disasters, the incident underscored the gaps in Oregon’s disaster readiness, from outdated emergency notification systems to underfunded infrastructure and training. Rep. Paul Evans (D-Monmouth) has a $300 million proposal to modernize Oregon’s disaster preparedness, aiming to improve communication systems, strengthen infrastructure, and expand local readiness efforts over the next decade. He and Rep. David Gomberg (D-Lincoln, West Benton, Lane) join us to discuss where Oregon has made progress, where significant vulnerabilities remain, and how new investments could help the state better prepare for the next major crisis — whether it’s a tsunami, wildfire, or another emergency all together.
After a massive earthquake off Russia triggered a Pacific tsunami, questions arose closer to home: could it happen here? In this episode, Shoresides speaks with Stephen Pfaff, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service's Wilmington office, about the science of tsunamis, the likelihood of one reaching Coastal North Carolina, and how preparedness efforts—from early warnings to public education—could make the difference when seconds count.Links:8.8 magnitude earthquake latest: Volcano erupts in Russia, tsunami waves reach Californiahttps://abcnews.go.com/US/tsunami-watch-issued-hawaii-after-80-magnitude-earthquake/story?id=124190121Support the show

There was such a feeling of fun and excitement when I chose my bold colored, striped spread for my twin dorm room bed, posters to hang on the wall and courses to take at Penn State. I don't recall anyone giving me mace or offering tips or advice on how to stay safe when walking alone or heading off to a frat party. Thankfully, I managed to make it through my years without being assaulted or harmed, even though I made some really dumb choices to walk alone intoxicated through dark alleyways and spend time alone with young men who were also intoxicated. Today young women face even more threats with their drinks being spiked . We are at least fortunate that more people are talking about assaults and educating on how to prevent it from happening to you. This week I'm featuring highlights from two amazing prior podcast conversations about the topic of safety for young women. If you'll humor my choppy editing work, it's worth a listen.I share snippets from a 2023 conversation with self-defense teacher Margaret Pizer from Tsunami Self Defense Systems to empower women physically and mentally. Check out Tsunami's upcoming classes and workshops on their Facebook page. I also share a snippet from my conversation with Shirah Benarde, creator of the Night Cap drink spiking prevention product. Shirah is working hard to educate universities and colleges, bars and clubs and legislators about the dangers and prevalence of drink spiking so that one day her product won't be needed. (Some progress to note: A new law in California requires bars to provide lids on all drinks.)On August 25, check out the release of the documentary "When Is It Enough?" free on YouTube. Tsunami warnings were issued and evacuations were ordered across the Pacific after the 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's remote Far East.
Tsunami warnings have been scaled back across much of the northern Pacific after a huge earthquake off eastern Russia. The earthquake, which hit near Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, is one of the most powerful ever recorded. Tsunami warnings have since been downgraded in Japan, Russia and Hawaii. Did Trump trap Obama with Presidential immunity? Economy https://twitter.com/Geiger_Capital/status/1950545248825798729 Trump Axes Obama's Endangerment Finding During his two terms, Obama enacted several policies that subsidized uncompetitive, unneeded, and unwanted green energy while placing onerous regulations on fossil fuels. During his first term, Trump tried to reverse much of the Obama administration's anti-fossil fuel actions. However, there was only so much that could be done given the constant distractions Trump faced throughout his first term. One of the most consequential environmental regulations that Trump was unable to eliminate was Obama's “Endangerment Finding.” Most Americans have probably never heard of the Endangerment Finding. But this obscure rule has effectively allowed the federal government to label carbon dioxide a harmful “pollutant” that can be regulated under the Clean Air Act. Unfortunately, a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowed the Obama administration to enact the rule in the first place. In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Massachusetts v. EPA that “greenhouse gases are air pollutants covered by the Clean Air Act and that EPA must determine whether or not emissions of greenhouse gases from new motor vehicles cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.” Although this is the standard reading of the ruling, it is not totally accurate. According to the majority opinion, written by former Justice John Paul Stevens, “We need not and do not reach the question whether on remand EPA must make an endangerment finding, or whether policy concerns can inform EPA's actions in the event that it makes such a finding. We hold only that EPA must ground its reasons for action or inaction in the statute.” So, the 2007 decision did not determine that carbon dioxide is a harmful air pollutant. Rather, it granted that the EPA has the authority to determine if carbon dioxide is a harmful greenhouse gas based solely upon unequivocal data. Trump's EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin, has made rescinding the Endangerment Finding a priority. “A lot of people are out there listening, they might not know what the endangerment finding is. If you ask congressional Democrats to describe what it is, the left would say that it means that carbon dioxide is a pollutant, carbon dioxide is an endangerment to human health. They might say methane is a pollutant, methane is an endangerment to human health,” Zeldin said on the Ruthless podcast. “That's an oversimplified, I would say inaccurate way to describe it,” Zeldin added. “The Obama administration said that carbon dioxide, when mixed with a bunch of other well-mixed gases, greenhouse gases, that it contributes to climate change. How much?
