Akbar Chisti started Seamus Golf out of his garage with his wife Megan Chisti in 2011. Since the beginning, every product they make is meant to tell its own story. Whether it's the U.S. Open, The Masters, or a number of custom projects they have pursued for some of the most influential and inspirational people, their company stands to partner with their golfers and give them a way to represent and connect with others. They are proud and grateful to their Makers and Administrative staff who work tirelessly together to overcome the challenges of small business in the modern era. They are grateful to their partners, customers, and vendors who have combined together to embrace and permit them to become the most sought-after accessory maker in golf.Support the show
In conjunction with the return of the US Open to LA after 75 years, LACC, the USGA and the SCGA have undertaken a collaborative project to restore the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course in South LA and support the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation's programming. We talk with two folks who are involved in this project -- Akbar Chisti, founder of Seamus Golf, and Kevin Gigax, executive director of the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation. We discuss with Akbar how he came to create Seamus Golf and how this project fits in well with his thoughts on the game, and we talk with Kevin about how the project came about and the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation's role in the project, and how we all believe that this wonderful 2023 US Open legacy project could provide a blueprint for future US Opens in other communities.
For this episode we're heading west to Oregon to spend some time with the founders of two awesome brands based in the Pacific Northwest. The first is Akbar Chisti, the founder of Seamus Golf, one of the biggest golf accessory brands out there. The second is Sam Hahn of L.A.B. Golf is a modern brand on a mission to simplify the game by improving performance on the green to help golfers save a few strokes off their scorecard. If you're looking for a tip on the perfect Oregon golf itinerary, be sure to stick around to the end. It's totally worth it.
Akbar Chisti and his wife, Megan, started Seamus Golf 11 years ago — they were one of the first in a slew of small makers in the golf space who have since helped define the look and feel of "new golf". The son of Pakistani immigrants, Akbar learned golf in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, while skipping Sunday school at his local mosque. He would eventually join the caddie ranks at Bandon Dunes quickly after the now-mega-resort opened in 2001, and now balances his business with coaching his daughter's volleyball team. Akbar is a joy. There's something about the Oregon coast that seems to inspire hand crafted golf accessories. The area also produces wonderful people who love the game. People just like Akbar Chisti. Among the many brands that call the region home, Chisti's company, Seamus Golf, continues to stand out. Their tartan headcovers and forged ball markers are easily recognizable on courses across the country. The Seamus success story is rooted in the history of golf in Oregon as well as the state's recent ascension to the forefront of the American golfing conscience. It's no coincidence that as Bandon Dunes resort has grown in popularity so has Seamus Golf. Its a story that founder Akbar Chisti is proud to tell. Chisti joins me on this episode of Mid-Am Crisis to discuss how Seamus Golf has flourished in an era that gave rise to the internet golfer. We talked about how social media tools like Instagram and Twitter have helped fuel a new generation of golf enthusiasts who love products and brands like his. Chisti shares some stories about golf's history in Oregon, how Bandon Dunes helped inspire his company, and why so many golf accessory brands are flourishing in the Portland area. I've known Chisti for a few years and this conversation confirmed all the reasons why I enjoy talking golf with him. While I've yet to make my golfing pilgrimage to the Oregon coast, his passionate descriptions on the area and its courses make me want to leave today. For now, I'll just have to keep using my Seamus gear and pretending I'm at Bandon Dunes. Maybe we will change that soon. The story of Seamus Golf, a golf headcover and handmade products company, begins with a beer bong of all things. A beer bong in Corvallis, Oregon on gameday between Oregon State and the University of Oregon. Megan Kenton convinced Akbar Chisti to do a beer bong, and though they barely knew each other at the time, they had a future in business together, as well as marriage. Both Megan and Akbar talked with Sean Zak recently about how they created a giant in the headcover business, and got the attention of every governing body in golf. This is a story of a startup company, but also a story of living freely with your present and your future, and stepping out on a limb with business decisions.
In another hilarious episode with our friend Akbar Chisti, the founder of Seamus Golf can’t stop talking about Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, California, plus offers up his other candid answers to our Emergency 9 golf-travel quiz, including why he loves great showers (making him a kindred spirit to co-host Darin Bunch).
