On My Three Sons, Stanley Livingston grew up, with the boomer generation and with television itself. By the time we came to know Stan as Chip Douglas he had logged over ten credits, performing with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Doris Day, Ozzie & Harriet Nelson, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Debbie Reynolds and Gregory Peck!Stan takes us back to his first gig, as a stunt double for Jon Provost on Lassie. Jon couldn't swim yet. Stan got stuck in a muddy pond and turned in a tremendously vivid performance as a kid attempting not to drown. His parents met in Baltimore, where his father ran a burlesque theater and his mom put some vahs in her dance voom. In search of reinvention, they moved to California where Stan and his brother Barry were born and raised. With an ample dose of show biz in his blood, Stan felt at home from the first moment he stepped onto a set.He shares the story of his big break at just six years old on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Stan was working as a neighborhood kid extra when Ozzie threw him a line and he delivered. Stan appeared on ten episodes of the show, until he landed My Three Sons and his brother Barry took over. (Then following him to MTS!)At age 13, Stan was cast in the epic, star-studded adventure, How the West Was Won under the legendary (and notoriously hot-tempered) direction of Henry Hathaway. He recounts Hathaway's explosive on-set tirades (and how Debbie Reynolds was the only cast member bold enough to take him on and yell back!) The experience taught him an invaluable lesson: never take what happens on set personally.Stan speaks warmly of William Frawley, who played Bub on My Three Sons. Stan never knew his grandfathers and Bill did not have kids. They adopted each other and truly cherished their bond, on and off screen. And so, it was difficult for Stan to accept William Demarest who came in as Uncle Charley when William Frawley's faltering health made it impossible to get him insured. But Stan did eventually warm to the new Bill who came with his own set of charms. We hear behind-the-scenes stories from the MTS set, including a memorable location shoot aboard a jet at LAX, and how producers enticed movie star Fred MacMurray to television by structuring a schedule that allowed him to shoot all of his scenes for the season in just a few months. We enjoy a warm, insightful look at growing up in classic television and celebrate the mentors who helped shape one of America's most beloved sitcom families. The GPS is essential to modern navigation, communication, and critical infrastructure. However, the United States faces serious threats to GPS technology, many of which are rarely discussed publicly. In addition to the looming threat from Russian and Chinese weaponry, increasing orbital debris and severe space weather have the potential to damage or destroy American satellites, causing a complete collapse of our navigational systems. A sustained disruption could significantly impair navigation, timing, and communications systems nationwide.America has more satellites than any other country, and our economy depends heavily on space-based positioning, navigation, and timing services. Former members of the National Security Council and outside advisers have called GPS “a single point of failure for America.”To discuss this matter, Shane is joined by two experts in GPS policy. Dana A. Goward is president of the Resilient Navigation and Timing Foundation and a former member of the National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Advisory Board, which advises the government on GPS policy. He took this role after retiring from service in the Coast Guard and as the United States maritime navigation authority. Also joining Shane is Coast Guard Rear Admiral Jeff Hathaway (ret.), a longtime navigator and board member of the foundation.

Description This week we're skipping the blockbusters for the weird, wild, and mostly forgotten gems. Grab your neural implants and alien blasters as we explore the sci-fi movies that time almost left behind. From cyberpunk head-scratchers to B-movie alien invasions, we revisit the fascinating, flawed, and surprisingly ambitious sci-fi films that didn't quite make the Hall of Fame, but absolutely deserve another look. News Marvel Oreos - The Stuf of Legends has arrived with superhero-themed cookies. Millennium Falcon Pilot Chair - A detailed rolling chair replica inspired by Han Solo's cockpit seat is now available. The 'Burbs TV Series - A Peacock series inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks classic quietly dropped all episodes. The Mummy 4 - Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return on May 19, 2028 for the next installment. During the Super Bowl, we got new looks at The Mandalorian and Grogu, Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua has been diving into Reacher, where the towering former military policeman dispenses his own brand of justice with quiet intensity and very loud punches. Based on the Lee Child novels, the series delivers tightly constructed mysteries and satisfying payoffs that make it perfect comfort viewing for action fans. Jay is revisiting Twin Peaks Season 1, soaking in David Lynch's wonderfully strange blend of soap opera melodrama and unsettling mystery. Between cherry pie, coffee, and cryptic dream sequences, it's a masterclass in mood and quirky storytelling that still feels fresh decades later. Sci-Fi Saturdays - This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks at the forgotten sci-fi gem Colossal (2017). Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an out-of-work woman struggling with alcoholism, returns to her hometown only to discover she may somehow be connected to a giant monster attacking Seoul. It's a clever, genre-bending mix of kaiju chaos and personal drama, blending big sci-fi spectacle with intimate character study. Hathaway did a great job, and Jason Sudeikis plays against type in a role that's equal parts charming and unsettling. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! The 1990s were packed with massive sci-fi blockbusters! But what about the ones that didn't dominate the multiplex? This week, Jay and Shua explore the fascinating middle tier of 90s science fiction: the cyber-thrillers, alien shootouts, dystopian futures, and existential thought experiments that lived just outside the spotlight. From cult classics to genuine box office swings, they discuss why some of these films faded from pop culture memory while others quietly built loyal fanbases. It's a nostalgic, lighthearted look at the ambition, weirdness, and undeniable creativity that made 90s sci-fi such a strange and wonderful era. Which animated character would you pick? Who would be a good mashup? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "What the world needs now, is love sweet love." will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Hathaway teaches law and political science at Yale and is a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the president-elect of the American Society of International Law. She joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why a golden age of treaties seems to be tarnishing, how the legal basis for entering conflicts is being conflated and reinterpreted, and how aggressive U.S. tactics are upsetting the world order – even among allies. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes clock in with "The Intern" (2015), Nancy Meyers' feel-good comedy starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy this one. Yes, it's sweet, uplifting, and maybe a little too saccharin at times, but it delivers exactly the warm, comforting tone it's aiming for. De Niro and Hathaway have fantastic chemistry, and the film's steady, upbeat vibe makes it one of the more genuinely pleasant modern studio comedies. The Mikes do take issue with a stretch of drama that arrives about halfway through the movie. It feels forced, a little too Hollywood, and somewhat undercuts the strength of Hathaway's character by the time the film wraps up. But, "The Intern" is an uplifting film about mentorship, connection, and finding purpose at any age, so it's easy to forgive the missteps.Overall, it's an easy watch, a charming film, and a reminder that sometimes “feel-good” doesn't have to be a bad thing.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Donny Hathaway, born Oct. 1, 1945, in Chicago, became one of the most influential soul voices of the 20th century. From his Grammy-winning collaborations with Roberta Flack to writing the holiday classic “This Christmas,” Hathaway's music remains timeless. Despite his brilliance, he struggled with mental illness and died by suicide in 1979 at only 33 years old. We remember his life, music, and enduring legacy. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the legendary vocalist Arnold McCuller, whose voice has graced stages and recordings alongside artists such as James Taylor and Phil Collins, among others. While we reflect on some of his most iconic musical moments, our conversation centers on his current mission as a recovery coach and interventionist, as well as his involvement with Harmonium. This powerful organization supports creatives in recovery. We talk about the unique pressures musicians face, how addiction weaves into the culture of performance, and the courage it takes to rebuild a life and career on new terms. I also share some of my own journey of sobriety — nearing one year — and Arnold offers wisdom on moving past shame, reclaiming creativity, and finding freedom through community. This is a conversation about music, resilience, and hope — one that every artist (and human) will find something in.Music from the Episode:Witness (Arnold McCuller)Chances Are (Arnold McCuller)Hard Times (Arnold McCuller)You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive (Arnold McCuller)Above the Rain (Arnold McCuller)To learn more about Arnold and his incredible work, please visit his website.
