Five transits land between Sunday and Saturday and the cumulative effect is a summer that looks completely different by the time you reach July 5th. Good morning. If you've ever seen the musical ‘Godspell' – and yes, it's still in the repertoire for colleges and theatre companies round the world – you'll remember the catchy opening chorus: ‘Pre…ee, pare ye, the way of the Lord…' – I'm tempted but I'm not going to sing it – the point of the chorus is to accompany the arrival of John the Baptist, the herald, of Jesus. Today, the 24th June, the Church celebrates the birth of this extraordinary figure of Jewish history, who appears not only in the Gospels but in the writings of the first century Jewish historian, Josephus. John's birth is traditionally the 24th June, 6 months before Christmas, and it also comes just after the Summer Solstice – and that has symbolic meaning too, because John reportedly said of Jesus Christ. ‘He must increase but I must decrease'. However bright the sun is in today's sky and however long the day, we're on the way down to long nights and shorter days. John the Baptist is known as the forerunner, the one who, as the chorus insists, prepared the way of the Lord. Yet he did not see his hopes fulfilled, at least not in the way he expected. He was arrested by the local puppet King, Herod Antipas, and beheaded in prison in a macabre episode when Herod's niece, Salome, danced so fetchingly before Herod that he offered her any reward she would like – and she asked for the prophet's head on a platter. Yuk. Oscar Wilde wrote a one-act play about it, and I remember playing Salome's evil mother who had prompted the request. So John the forerunner, the herald, ended up disgraced, confused, betrayed – and was never quite sure whether Jesus was the one whose coming he had prophesied or whether it would turn out to be someone else. John's story makes me realise how little we understand the significance of our own lives. We're all part of a stream of history, we come and go, but the stream goes on. There's so much in society that tells us we can be who we like and achieve what we want, that our sole purpose is to maximise our own significance. The story of John comes as a corrective. We are not Messiahs, World Kings, or even as one world leader puts it, ‘Very Stable Geniuses'. Yet we all have some capacity for discernment. We can practise truthfulness and generosity and be humble before God and one another. What comes after us we cannot know but all of us we can hope and pray the days ahead will bring flourishing and peace to ourselves and our overheating planet.

Using the story of the rich young ruler, reflections on fatherhood, chosen family, and principles from Marcus Aurelius, he challenges listeners to release victimhood, abandon unmet expectations, protect their joy, and embrace their divine identity. The message centers on the idea that fullness of joy is found when we stop allowing past injuries and other people’s limitations to define us and instead recognize that we are already seated in heavenly places. Your Purpose Is to Bring Heaven to Earth Bishop emphasized that each person carries a unique expression of heaven that only they can release into the world. When Jesus taught: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” He was teaching believers to become agents of heaven’s influence. You were born to bring something into the earth that did not exist before you arrived. Scripture: Matthew 6:10 3. Stop Comparing Your Journey to Someone Else’s Every person has a unique calling and destiny. Bishop reminded listeners that Jesus was completely original, and believers are called to walk in that same confidence. “Never let the Pharisees in your life shake you.” The goal is not imitation but authenticity. Scripture: Romans 8:29 4. The Rich Young Ruler’s Problem Was Attachment In Mark 10, the rich young ruler asks Jesus how to inherit eternal life. Bishop points out that Jesus was not creating a doctrine about money. Instead, He was exposing the man’s attachment to something he was unwilling to release. Anything we refuse to release can become a barrier to spiritual freedom. Scripture: Mark 10:17-31 5. Chosen Family Is Part of the Kingdom One of the most powerful Father’s Day themes involved Jesus’ promise that those who lose family relationships will receive fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers in return. Bishop explained that many people spend their lives waiting for parents or relatives to become something they were never capable of being. Healing begins when we stop demanding from people what they cannot provide. The Kingdom supplies family in unexpected ways. Scripture: Mark 10:29-30 6. Let Go of Unmet Expectations A major thread throughout the message was learning to release expectations. Whether it’s children, parents, friends, or spouses, constantly expecting others to fulfill emotional needs creates disappointment. Bishop shared personal stories about Father’s Day and choosing gratitude instead of waiting for validation. Joy increases when expectations decrease. 7. Reject the Sense of Injury Quoting Marcus Aurelius, Bishop taught: “Reject your sense of injury and the injury itself disappears.” This does not mean denying injustice. It means refusing to build an identity around being wounded. Many people continue suffering from events long after the event itself has passed because they continually replay the injury. Freedom begins when we stop identifying as victims. 8. Forgiveness Is About Freedom Forgiveness is not saying someone was right. Forgiveness is refusing to continue paying emotional interest on an old debt. Bishop explained that bitterness often hurts the wounded person more than the original offender. When we forgive, we reclaim our power. 9. Protect Your Holy of Holies Bishop compared the human spirit to the Temple. Not everyone deserves unrestricted access to your inner world. Healthy boundaries are not selfish. Healthy boundaries are stewardship. Some people must be loved from a distance if they continually threaten your peace. Scripture: Ephesians 6:11 10. Joy Is Your Responsibility One of the strongest messages of the morning was that no one else is responsible for your joy. Not your parents. Not your spouse. Not your children. Not your employer. Not society. You are the steward of your own emotional and spiritual environment. Protecting your joy is sacred work. Scripture: Romans 14:17 Father’s Day Application Bishop encouraged listeners to bless their fathers regardless of the complexity of the relationship. Rather than focusing on what was missing, he challenged people to honor the role those relationships played in bringing them to where they are today. “They were part of your journey to get you here. Bless them with a yes.” The message was not about pretending pain never happened. It was about refusing to allow old wounds to determine present joy. Final Thought The heart of this message is that fullness of joy becomes possible when we stop viewing ourselves through the lens of injury and start seeing ourselves through the lens of heaven. You are not trying to get to heaven. You are already seated there. Now the assignment is to bring that reality into every relationship, every challenge, every conversation, and every part of your life. “The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17)

Tyler Knott Gregson discusses Summer Solstice, and how what we save can end up saving us in the end. The light, the love, the positivity we need to survive Winter.

Summer arrives here in the United States in the wee hours of tomorrow morning – the moment of the June solstice. At the solstice, the Sun stands farthest north for the entire year. For people at about 23-and-a-half degrees north latitude, our star will pass directly overhead at local noon. That line of latitude is known as the Tropic of Cancer. It was named a couple of thousand years ago. At the time, the Sun appeared against the constellation Cancer at the solstice. Today, though, the Sun’s almost directly astride the border between Taurus and Gemini. It’s on the Taurus side at the exact moment of the solstice, but it slides into Gemini a few hours later. The change in address is the result of a slow “wobble” in Earth’s axis. As it wobbles, the Sun shifts position against the background of stars. It takes our planet about 26,000 years to complete a single wobble, so that’s how long it takes the Sun to move all the way across the zodiac. So the Sun will return to Cancer in about 24,000 years. Earth’s axis also nods up and down a little over an even longer period – about 41 thousand years. That causes a shift in the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer. Right now, it’s moving southward at about 50 feet per year – changing the circle where the Sun stands overhead on the summer solstice. We’ll have more about the summer solstice tomorrow. Her career caring for the dead has spanned over 20 years.
