So this past few weekends ago, Seishun Con happened. And it was fun! One of the fun things was yet another attempt at an OSMcast LIVE! show. This time, we planned on doing a podcast about Crusher Joe with our pals over at Akihabara Renditions. Only... Funny thing! Communication failed, and half of us did not watch Crusher Joe in time for this panel. So, this is the audio you get instead. Next time, a slightly more planned episode recorded at Seishun Con, along with our Tennessee compatriots.
In this episode of Akihabara Renditions, Drew and Richard sit down and talk about a film that was seemingly everywhere in an earlier time of fandom but has conspicuously disappeared - 1987's Twilight of the Cockroaches! Take a trip down memory lane as we revisit a film we're seeing for the first time in two decades! As we mentioned in the show, the movie was aired as a one-off movie night on Cartoon Network on Night of the Vampire Robots, and someone uploaded the whole broadcast to YouTube. Download this episode, you geek!
In this exciting episode of Akihabara Renditions, Drew takes to stealing content from Twitter to get some discussion going for the podcast topic. First, Drew and Richard discuss the hashtag #FilmstruckFour and each select 4 anime that have shaped their overall taste in anime fandom. Then we turn the tables around and discuss something we hate about a show we love and something we love about a show we hate. Nice quick episode here, so hope you enjoy! Again, leave us feedback on iTunes, Stitcher and wherever you get your podcasts and hit us up on Twitter, Facebook and email! Download it, you geek!
Wait wait wait what 2 updates in a row is this 2017 or what geez SO ANYROAD yes the OSMcast is BACK yet again for a classic late night con report! This time, we stay up waaaaay too late on the Saturday night of AWA to talk about said con. Since Basil and Anna were the only ones from Team OSM around, we stacked the room full of amazing guests! Said guests include, Jared from Oldtaku no Radio, Drew from Akihabara Renditions, as well as Bonus Doug and Jeff! ... From, well, they were in the room so good for them! Being in a room! Protip: This was recorded in a hotel room at 3AM+ in the morning, so the the audio is not always the best. That's mostly due to the whole hotel room thing, though! OSMnotes Yep that sure was an anime con, so have some Time Cues already! We start the OSMcast!ing – 0:00 General Gabbing - 0:34 Anime Weekend Atlanta 2017 General Thoughts on AWA, Before and Now - 1:46 Thursday @ AWA 2017 - 23:27 Friday @ AWA 2017 - 45:48 Saturday @ AWA 2017 - 73:14 Sunday "@" AWA 2017 - 107:02 Final Thoughts about AWA 2017 - 108:56
On this episode of Akihabara Renditions,Drew and Richard discuss current anime distribution and compare pros and cons to "The Old Daze" of anime fandom and whether we are now in a golden age of fandom as far as availability and price.
Black Jack. He's a REAL DOCTOR. For this episode of the OSMcast_!_ we decided to tangle with Osamu Tezuka’s Black Jack, being released by Vertical. But frankly the dark doctor was more than we could handle alone, so we had to call in some back up. Who in the world could save us? None other than Clarissa from the Anime World Order podcast! So come listen in as we talk about the surgical sweetness that is Black Jack. OSMnotes While I know locally it’s not terribly hard to track down volumes of this manga, I also know you can always pick up a copy on Amazon. So buy it. You’ll thank us later. You hear that, you're ALL going DOWN. ... With Laughter. At AWA. And yes, that’s right in a mere matter of weeks the OSMcast_!_ shall be taking our annual sojourn to greatest anime con of the southeast, Anime Weekend Atlanta. There will be thrills, chills, excitement, PODCASTING. Worlds will be rocked. Minds, BLOWN. Also, we have panels. Basil will be teaming up with Drew from Akihabara Renditions for two action-packed riveting panels of amazement. Now, if you listened to the podcast, and why wouldn’t you, you already know what’s going down. But for those of you that for some reason are reading this instead of immediately clicking on that arrow for audio epiphany, he’s some spoilers. Okay I'll admit it. I just wanted an excuse to post this amazing poster. For one, we’ll be hosting an Engrish Jamboree. Yeah, a whole panel of Japanese people trying to speaking English and failing spectacularly. It’s incredibly politically correct! And THEN, or perhaps before (I have no clue which panel comes first), we’ll he hosting AWA’s Wide World of Sports (Anime). In case you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s a panel on sports anime, and why it’s awesome. And if you disagree, why you’re WRONG. And speaking of being wrong, the Expendables was awesome and you like stuff being blown up, shot at, or stabbed and hearing wonderfully horrendous dialog you should have already seen it. Oh wait, I guess everyone already did. So uh, go see Scott Pilgrim! Apparently no one has gotten around to doing that yet.
The realliest! Since we are about to go to a whole other new con in a matter of weeks, it’s high-time we finish what we started with Ohayocon and bring to you The REALLY real real Ohayocon 10 Experience! That’s right, REAL podcasters talking to REAL con-goers. It’s so real, you’ll probably not want to listen to it the car, for fear of wrecking due to the high amounts of Real involved. And not because since it was stuff recorded on the show floor its kinda hard to make it out sometimes NOPE. OSMnotes OH GOD MTAC IS SO SOON ALSO SO NOT READY 20th Century King : A look at Naoki Urasawa: the OSMcast! will be looking at one of the most awesome manga and anime creators of our time, Naoki Urasawa. Perhaps you may have heard of him! We’ll be looking stuff from as early as Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl (Maybe even Beta!!!), through Master Keaton and Monster, and even his latest stuff like 20th Century Boys, PLUTO, and Billy Bat. We’ll also be coving the various forms his works have taken, like the Monster anime (that has been running on SciF- I mean, SyFy, and the 20th Century Boys live action films. Tsundere: Why do we love the ones that hate us most?: The panel we ran at Ohayocon returns, bigger, badder, slightly less out of our asses! Ah, tsunderes. You know the “I hate you! But I love you! But I hate you! But I-” types best exemplified by say, Akane from Ranma 1/2. This is a panel dedicated to those wonderful ladies (and guys in some cases) that can go from raging demon to moe moe in under six seconds. We, the intrepid risk takers and go getters here at the OSMcast! will be talking about this most classic of anime tropes. The history, the whys, the hows, and we’ll probably even get pissed off at you, before secretly showing that we actually like you. The Works of Rumiko Takahashi: This is a panel borne from the hot fiery shounen brolliance that is the OSMrenditions (OSMcast! + Akihabara Renditions) this is a panel where we talk about Rumiko Takahashi. And probably argue about her stuff a lot. It should be pretty entertaining!
Mordin: This is the new why you play Mass Effect. It’s a new month! To celebrate the OSMcast_!_ decided to talk about a game from the even more not-too distant past than the last time. So here’s a podcast where we talk about BioWare’s scifi RPG/shooter hybrid sequel Mass Effect 2! OSMnotes The OSMcast_!_ is once again going to MTAC! And, craziness of craziness, we are running panels. Several, in fact! 20th Century King: A look at Naoki Urasawa : the OSMcast! will be looking at one of the most awesome manga and anime creators of our time, Naoki Urasawa. Perhaps you may have heard of him! We’ll be looking stuff from as early as Yawara! Just before Anime Weekend Atlanta, we celebrate our twenty-fifth episode (and it only took 30 months to do!) by changing things up a little bit. Here at Akihabara Renditions, we do our reviews a little differently - we all are subjected to the material to be reviewed and each give our opinions on it. I think it makes for a much more balanced review but there are still some kinks to be worked out in the execution. While much of our review material thus far has been OAVs and films which only take a few hours to watch, when it comes to some of the longer series, four busy-as-Japanese-beavers-individuals with a ton of other commitments outside of the podcast, it becomes a little infeasible to adhere to this method. So, we've modified the method a bit with one of us helming the flagship of running the review and selecting a few episodes for the rest of the members to get a feel for the series. Our first attempt at this new review style is 1987's Kimagure Orange Road. We return to our normal review pattern with a forgettable OAV from 1986, Cosmos Pink Shock. Download this episode, you geek! Hosts: Drew Sutton, Marc Smazik and Richard Hoelsher
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Okay so it’s slightly late but here’s our podcast all about Mobile Suit Gundam 00. It’s got giant robots and stuff! And space elevators. Joining us is Richard from Akihabara Renditions. OSMnotes You can watch the show on the Sci Fi Channel! Or I’m sure DVDs exist. Chances are you know what this show is if you want to see or not and probably already have. Oh well! We have a new voicemail! It’s 209-OSM-LINE. Or for those that like actual numbers, it’s (209) 676-5463. I know we said this last time, but it bears repeating! And it also bears YOU CALLING IT. You can also send us emails at osmcast@gmail.com. That would also be pretty swell. PS: I just realized that the last two shows we covered are Bandai mecha shows that aired backed back with one-another. Crazy.
Let's News Crappy! Never has the saying “The road to hell is paved with good intentions” as this episode. Four from the crew of the OSMcast combines with three of the members of Akihabara Renditions to deliver a massive recap of the news from past couple of weeks in Anime Land. What actually happens, however, is something else. Hopefully it still ends up entertaining on some level. OSMnotes We have a new voicemail! It’s 209-OSM-LINE. Or for those that like actual numbers, it’s (209) 676-5463. The contest is still going! Post in the comments! Email us! Okay I think that’s it.
This is not a normal episode by any length because we talk about a con AT A CON and are GUESTS on OUR OWN show. Plus - to get even more trippy, this is actually the SECOND piece of bonus material recorded at the convention for Akihabara Renditions. We introduce (not really) a guest and friend of ours, Jason Sohiel Asgari of gaijINside.com in an earlier bonus track and we'll post that later. Now for the episode you care about (not really)! Special thanks go out to Basil and Kevin of OSMcast, first for Basil for hosting and then Kevin for filling in mid way through and to Jason Sohiel Asgari for joining us to talk about conventions and men in rubber suits. Podcast Notes: None of us can count conventions who use "non-sequential" numbering schemes, also known as "themes". We spend the first part talking about the actual convention in a real-time fashion (unlike a real review, which we sit on for three weeks and then not post it for another month). Then, Basil has to leave and his compadre Kevin fills in to help Richard and Jason school Drew on the magical fairy land that is Japanese special effects hero programming, more shortly known as tokusatsu.
The DeJesuses... Or is that DeJesusi? Either way I'm pretty sure this image is made by Robert DeJesus. This week we decided to kick it off with our epic-ly long interview with two of the hardest working folks in anime fandom today: Robert and Emily DeJesus of Studio Capsule. They talked about all sorts of things with us, like what it takes to make it out there as an artist and the Best Con Slogan Ever. Did we mention Emily also is the con chair for Ohayocon? Also joining us was (I believe) Richard from Akihabara Renditions. OSMnotes There are a myriad of ways you can find Robert DeJesus on the Internet. There is his main site, Studio Capsule. But if you want to go where the action is, you want his YouTube page. You can also check out his DeviantArt page as well, if are feeling a little… You know… Devious. Whenever I hear our Skippy Promo I think of this. Robert DeJesus is an inspiration to us all. You know, with all of these various Internet sites (and there are actually more if you know where to look), I find it really weird someone had to write a “ What ever happened to Robert DeJesus?” page. Did the idea of using Google just never come up? Of course I’m sure that you can find out about Emily using those same sites, but I’ve heard talk that she runs an mean anime con. Hopefully when 2010 rolls around we’ll get to find out! Special props goes out to MTAC who arranged for the space and Akihabara Renditions for the tools to make this happen. SUPER special props goes out however to our buddy Elvis, whose quick cell phone action ensured that this interview took place, and for introducing us to the DeJesus duo in the first place. And of course, thank you once more to Robert and Emily for spending their time with us. It's good stuff! In other news our sound guy, the illustrious DJ Inubito, has teamed up with some fellow DJs and have formed Dou(gai)jin Recordings. Further more, they have already released their first promo EP. It contains four awesome tracks and you should totally check it out. As always, if you’d like to contact us, you can send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com, check out our forum, leave a comment in the comments section, or even give us a call on the OSMline (206-202-0071).
Middle Tennessee Anime Convention It’s the Monday after MTAC Ninja but the OSMcast must go on! Speaking of the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention, here’s a chat we had about the con with Christi Binkley, MTAC’s Director of Media Relations and Advertising. In other words, “Press Wrangler.” We talk a bit about the con and what it takes to make one of these con things happen. Also joining us was the wonderful Marc Smazik of Akihabara Renditions. Protip: Speaking of Akihabara Renditions, we _totally _stole their set up for this. Sadly, we also had no clue how to actually _use _any of it. As a result there is a lot of noise where we held the microphones like retards and the audio reflects this. Our apologizes. This probably isn’t a very good episode to listen to in the car. OSMnotes These made us feel all important and crap. We could post the full picture, but really we have faces perfect for radio. Photo courtesy of Tarrence Grigsby. This is actually merely one of many episodes that we recorded during MTAC. We’ll be doling them as they get edited, so stay tuned for more! It was an incredibly fun convention, and mad props go out to both Christi as well as Niko, the Director of Community Relations of Community Relations, for making it all possible. It was my biggest regret that we couldn’t nail down Niko down long enough to get him on a mic. There’s always next year, though! If any of you fine readers and/or listeners have recently come to the site from MTAC, hello! Please feel free to check out our Index of OSMs Past, or just go on ahead and plug our RSS Feed into the podcatching program of your choice. If you’d like to contact us, you can send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com, check out our forum, leave a comment in the comments section, or even give us a call on the OSMline (206-202-0071).
Finally, three months after the convention, this episode is edited down and is ready for your consumption. Consume! Podcast Notes: This episode has two components, the first recorded on Friday, 19 September 2008 when we sat down with a good friend of mine, Keith Daniell. Keith has been staffing with Anime Weekend Atlanta for the past 14 years, save for one year. Jason Brown, Marc Smazik and myself discuss with Keith the origins of Anime Weekend Atlanta from his perspective of working as a groundling and up to the rank of Assistant Director. We also share some of our early memories of the convention and how we've noticed changes at the convention, everything from the growth and the change in attendees (WARNING: There are a few instances in which what we say could probably be followed up with "Get off my lawn!"). Our second part we sit down with some other friends on Saturday evening (20 Sept. '08): Chad Bonin, who writes for Toon Zone and runs the nerd-culture blog, Gaijinside and Scott Laney, another contributor/editor at Gaijinside. Chad gets his Cartoon Network fanboy hat on as we briefly discuss the announcement of the end of the waning Toonami programming block and we chat about events and activities we'd done and went to at the convention as well as some preliminary opinions about how the convention went this year. Promos: Our first episode with promos! OSMcast! - I ended up on the Podcaster's Roundtable with two of the gents from OSMcast!, a podcast all about everything geeky. Generally, these types of podcasts aren't my thing but theirs is truly exceptional. Anime World Order - The reason why after a curious Google search that I decided maybe there's something to this anime podcasting thing. It's also their fault that I said, I can probably do this, too and gathered my motley crew and created the Akihabara Renditions podcast. This promo's less of a promo, compared to the other one listed on their site, but I feel that it captures the feel of the show more. Special Thanks: To our guests Keith Daniell, Chad Bonin, and Scott Laney, all of whom we'd love to work with again! To Paul Chapman/the Alimighty Gooberzilla of Greatest Movie Ever Podcast and Daryl Surat, Clarissa Graffeo and Gerald Rathkolb all of Anime World Order for not only hosting the podcaster's roundtable at Anime Weekend Atlanta but also inviting podcasters in the audience to join in. After a brief hiatus and considering a switch to a second "season" (and, deservedly being made fun of for it), Akihabara Renditions is back to touch upon another massively popular and important franchise to Japanese animation fandom. Hosts: Drew Sutton, Richard Hoelsher, Jason Brown and Marc Smazik. After our review of Mobile Suit Gundam F-91 back in episode 5 and Marc being confused by it, we go head first into "non-Mecha-Fan-Alienation" and pick up the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy (1981-82). Each episode was recorded after we had watched each segment of the trilogy and all we really talk about is Gundam.

All that's glitter isn't gold as the saying goes. And classic Japanese cartoons are no exception. Our gift to you is this delightful episode. Hosts: Drew Sutton, Marc Smazik, Jason Brown and Richard Hoelsher. The Akihabara Renditions crew dig through old boxes and closets to find some of the crappiest anime that they can for this special. I guess a testament to our collections is that Jason's submission ended up being crappy in certain areas and Drew didn't even have to touch his Robotech tapes for his crap. What did they review that was such crap? Download to find out!
Episode 9 features a review for a series which has a special place in most older anime fans hearts and probably one of the first series to make them cringe and scream in physical pain after watching it. Hosts: Drew Sutton, Marc Smazik, Jason Brown and Richard Hoelsher. So yes, Akihabara Renditions steps up to the plate and offers another take on the 1987 (pseudo-)cyberpunk OAV series, Bubblegum Crisis. Deciding to skip the discussion section, because this episode featured one of our first planned travesties, we move right along into the 1991 sequel Bubblegum Crash.
Episode 6 of the Akihabara Renditions podcast is now re-released! Hosts: Drew Sutton, Richard Hoelsher, Marc Smazik and Jason Brown. We come back to Miyazaki Hayao's work in this episode and pick of the first Studio Ghibli film, 1984's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Jason admits his sacrilidge for not necessarily being a fan of Miyazaki's films. We then discuss piracy in anime fandom and debate the topic as to whether or not fandom can exist without it now. We then wrap it up with a review of a little OAV called Juumu GUNM but is probably better known as Battle Angel/Battle Angel Alita.
Here is the re-release of episode 1 of the Akihabara Renditions podcast! Hosts: Drew Sutton, Marc Smazik and Jason Brown. Jason, Marc and myself introduce ourselves and what the Akihabara Renditions podcast is about and pony up with our fandom CVs to give some air of legitimacy as to why we should be doing a podcast, aside from "we just downloaded Audacity and decided we could do one, too!" We also lay out our first two reviews, 1992's Otaku no Video and 1989's Riding Bean. In between, we have our first roundtable discussion about modern fansubbing and how it's changed over time.
