Welcome to MANN WEEK!!!Based upon the hit '80's TV show of the same name co-created by Oscar-nominated writer/director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans), Mann brought this adaptation to the big screen twenty years ago this summer. The story once again focuses on two partnering Miami police detectives named Sonny Crockett (Oscar-nominated Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) - they are going undercover to take down a Latin American drug cartel and the similarities to the original show pretty much end there. Among their targets are Jose Yero (John Ortiz), Montoya (Luis Tosar), and Isabella (Gong Li) as they partner with the FBI to stop a major shipment of drugs. However Sonny then starts a romance with Isabella....and complications ensue! Considered a disappointment by both audiences and critics upon initial release, this has since gone on to develop a cult following....especially resulting from a better reception to the eventual "Director's Cut" which was released on DVD. THAT version will be reviewed in this episode.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Jake leads us through a tribute to physical media! Memories of VHS horror box art! The heyday and resurgence of vinyl! The reliance (and obligation) of giving books as gifts! This is Part Two of Teens and Screens, and it's the counterweight. Last episode, Dr. Johann D'Souza made the case for keeping toxic screens out of your teenager's hands entirely. Today I'm joined again by Dr. Will Dobud — social worker, researcher, and co-author of Kids These Days — who thinks the story we tell ourselves about phones and youth mental health is far bigger than the evidence behind it.I open by naming my own bias: I work with the families where it went wrong. Porn addiction, gaming addiction, failure to launch, daughters pulled into dark corners of social media. Will names his: he's oppositional by temperament, and he wrote a book making fun of how adults talk about kids.We get into why the meta-analytic effects between screen use and youth mental health are so small they're arguably not worth publishing, what a third variable does to correlational data, and why Australia's social media ban is failing six months in. I push back repeatedly — on whether "do what feels right" is useful advice to parents who don't know what modern pornography even is, on the candy-bin problem of unregulated access, and on whether calling the phone a symptom of family dysfunction slides into blaming parents. Then Will gets on his soapbox about school, and the conversation turns somewhere I didn't expect: youth self-harm and ER data that tracks the school calendar. Up during term, down during holidays. Highest on Mondays. What if we've been pointing at the wrong thing?Books mentioned in this episode:Kids These Days — Dr. Will Dobud, with co-author NevinThe Anxious Generation — Jonathan HaidtDr. Will Dobud is a social worker, researcher, and educator who has worked with adolescents and families in the United States, Australia, and Norway. Will is from Washington, D.C., and divides his time between the United States and Australia each year. He is an award-winning researcher and educator recognized for excellence in research, teaching, and crime prevention. Dr. Dobud is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Charles Sturt University, Australia's largest social work school. His research focuses on improving therapy outcomes for teenagers and promoting safe, ethical practices. He has investigated and written about America's Troubled Teen Industry, especially wilderness therapy. He has worked alongside advocates, survivors, researchers, and clinicians to protect youth from institutionalization and harm. Will is the co-author of the award-winning book, Kids These Days: Understanding and Supporting Youth Mental Health (2025).Links
The Summer of 86 at 40 is a weekly retrospective journey through United States pop culture surrounding the films released in May, June, July and August of 1986. Brandon Peters, Scott Mendelson and Aaron Neuwirth take a weekend by weekend look at the films released as well as the news stories, commercials, television and music that rounded out the general public’s lives as they lined the pockets of the box office to see these movies. August 8-10, 1986: Is Transformers: The Movie some childhood nostalgia or genuinely landmark film? Can the Better Off Dead crew deliver magic again? How’s Spike Lee’s first film fare after 40 years? Can Ted Danson & Howie Mandel become the next Laurel & Hardy? We answer these tough questions and more! We’ll also be discussing the box office report, notable news stories, a 1986 commercial, the top 10 Nielsen rated tv programs for the week and the top 10 of Casey Kasem’s American top 40 from the week these films were released. After 200 years of idolatry, God finally allowed the northern kingdom of Israel to be destroyed and the people carried off by Assyria. Meanwhile, the southern kingdom of Judah was being ruled the young, foolish, idolatrous King Ahaz. After being defeated in battle by the Aramean Kingdom of Damascus, Ahaz decided to worship the gods of Syria rather than turning to God for help. He also sacrificed his son to Molech in the Valley of Hinnom southwest of Jerusalem. Then he turned to the Assyrians for help against Israel, Syria, and Edom, cutting up fixtures in the Temple to send to Assyria as tribute. Needless to say, God was not pleased. Apparently, neither were the people of Judah. Ahaz was buried in the City of David rather than in the tombs of the kings of his forefathers. "We probably have some sense of what narrative is. So when your brain starts turning into the little movie camera because this is a juicy scene, then it's like, well, what would I want to show? What what would I want to know here?" says Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of Parks and Rec: The Underdog TV Show That Lit'rally Inspired a Vision for a Better America.Dude, we have Jennifer Keishin Armstrong here today. What brings her to the CNF Pod-o-Verse is her latest book, her ninth, titled Parks and Rec: The Underdog TV Show That Lit-rally Inspired a Vision for a Better America. It's published by Dutton with a forward by Nick Offerman. Jennifer also is the best selling author of Seinfeldia, and we talk about that as well, how timing is everything and there are so many things out of our control … She can be found @jmkarmstrong on IG and jenniferkamrstrong.com.OK, so Jennifer's Parks book came out earlier this year and it's a wonderful, breezy read about one of my all-time favorite TV shows, a show that is deeply important to me. We watch it all the time. We own the DVDs so we actually OWN it, not beholden to the whims of streaming platforms who can deplatform shows at the click of a mouse, presumably. Jennifer's book takes you behind the scenes with actors, writers, producers and shares never before told anecdotes and insights as to why this show has such staying power despite nearly being cancelled after every season. So, yes, we talk about Parks, but we mainly talk about: Dictionaries When your brain turns into a movie camera Jennifer's “practice book” she never talks about Her guidelines for pursuing a book How the dialogue around TV has changed in the last 25 years The ruthlessness of story craft How Parks got out from under the shadow of The Office Serendipity and non-meritocracy Living on the long tail Lessons from the Parks run And all the things out of our controlInstagram: @creativenonfictionpodcastSubstack: welcometopitchclub.substack.com

We genuinely couldn't decide if this was a Watch... or a Skip. Nicolas Winding Refn's first film in nearly a decade is hypnotic, hilarious, violent, gorgeous, frustrating—and unlike anything else in theaters. This week, Cupcake and WillDaBeast tackle Nicolas Winding Refn's long-awaited return with Her Own Private Hell, a hypnotic blend of neon noir, Hollywood satire, hyperviolence, eroticism, and dream logic that left us laughing, scratching our heads, and wanting to see it all over again.Along the way we revisit Refn's remarkable career—from Bronson and Drive to Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon—while discussing Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton's magnetic screen presence, stunning cinematography, David Lynch influences, and why this may be the strangest conversation we've ever had on Watch Skip Plus.Whether you think it's a masterpiece or a complete disaster...we're not entirely sure you're wrong.- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS!***Original Theme music: Linus Fitness-Center https://tr.ee/j7RkZlFOLLOW/LIKE/SUBSCRIBE/REVIEW/LOVEEmail us: WatchSkipPlus@gmail.comBe kind. Craig reflects on Steve's huge contribution to Hey Arnold!, from writing some of the show's most memorable stories to voicing Oskar, and shares personal memories from their years working together on Rugrats and Hey Arnold!.The conversation also explores the legacy of Hey Arnold!, the enduring fanbase, the origins of Arnold's iconic football-shaped head, the emotional depth of characters like Harold and Helga, and what might have happened with The Patakis spin-off. Craig also talks about returning to Nickelodeon, developing Skyrat, the changing animation industry, social media, fan art, DVDs, end credits, and why the world of Hey Arnold! still means so much to viewers years later.
Today we start with the revelation that Nikki Glaser did not send Chad $500 for his special. Shocking I know! Cardiff did some great investigating and proved that once again Chad has made up a lie that wouldn't have made him look good even if it were true. Artie Fletcher's standup set is getting more and more bizarre. Crowd work for your DVD special isn't a good idea but local references to cater to the audience in front of you might be even worse. KC Day was a good sport putting together the Trek Off for Vinnie Paulino's consequence and he made a heart warming tribute song for us. Jerry Banfield made every mistake possible with the love of his life and he's finally ready to talk about where it all went wrong. Unfortunately he learned to stop giving us all of the details on his vlog. Good takeaway but not good for WATP. Kevin Brennan did one of the craziest things I've ever seen - he watched Adam Busch acting on a sitcom with Jon Lovitz, Danny Trejo, Cheri Oteri, etc. and decided that it proves Adam didn't get paid and that he's a failed actor. Bill Burr had Julian Casablancas, the lead singer from the Strokes on his show and he couldn't be been less prepared. It's awkward and embarrassing. Opie had Tony P cohost with him on Monday morning and shuts down any chance Tony had to promote his comedy. When Ron joins on Tuesday he tries once again to hit the goal and the reason he needs $100 this time is insane! Megan and Annie join us for a round of “Is It Gay?” and “Opie or Burr.” We get caught up on Spotify comments, reviews, and your voicemails. For over 35 years I've watched guitar education evolve through private lessons, books, VHS tapes, DVDs, websites, YouTube, memberships, apps, and now AI. Information has never been easier to access. So why are so many guitar players still asking the same question... "What should I practice today?" In this episode I share why I believe guitar learning is entering a new era, why information alone isn't enough anymore, and why I completely rebuilt Play Guitar Academy around training instead of simply delivering more lessons. If this conversation resonates with you, I'd love to invite you to learn more about the Academy Training Dojo.

This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss “Prison Break” episode 410, “The Legend,” focusing on the unexpected emotional weight of Brad Bellick's death and how the show crafts redemption arcs that humanize former antagonists. They explore plot threads including the hunt for Scylla's designer David Baker (and a surprising real-world namesake), Trishanne's reveal as a federal plant, and questions about Don Self's credibility as a threat versus a bureaucrat. They highlight a grounded hospital scene between Sara and Michael that raises the stakes of his tumor and frames their relationship as deeply committed. Casting director Scott “Genk” Genkinger joins to detail his role from episode two through season four, the collaborative global casting network, key cast additions (including Rob Knepper as T-Bag), notable hires and near-misses (Chris Hemsworth for Whistler), and how casting choices build an ensemble “company.” The conversation also contrasts past and present casting practices, self-tapes, and shifting Hollywood norms. This is Part 1 of a two-part series on teens and screens, and I'm starting at one end of the spectrum on purpose. Today I welcome back Dr. Johann D'Souza, a clinical psychologist specializing in OCD and behavioral addiction, for an unapologetically hardline conversation. His position: never give your child a smartphone — and say no to the three "toxic screen uses" of video games, social media, and pornography. We dig into why each harms kids differently: how video games train boys toward "failure to launch" by rewarding minimal effort, how social media consumes an average of 36 hours a week from teenage girls during the years their identities are forming, and why Johann believes pornography is the single biggest problem facing young men today. He lays out his four takeaways for parents: embrace your parental authority, never give your child a smartphone, build up real life, and find one friend in the battle. We also get into the family dynamics driving early device use — what Johann calls the pattern of anxious moms and passive dads — and I bring my own framing on boundaries and why your adolescent with a smartphone is like a toddler with a candy bin.In Part 2, coming up in episode 225, you'll hear from Dr. Will Dobud, who argues close to the opposite: digital integration rather than prohibition. Hear both before you decide. The question this series explores is what a real childhood requires — and whether that means protecting kids from these technologies or teaching them to live alongside them.Dr. Johann D'Souza is a clinical psychologist with an unequivocal message: Smartphones are destroying young minds, pornography addiction is epidemic among teenage boys, and social media is driving girls to suicide. His solution? Never buy your child a smartphone. Period. With 20+ peer-reviewed publications, Harvard affiliation, and his book Saving Teens from Toxic Screens, Dr. D'Souza has the credentials the establishment can't dismiss. Former employers tried to cancel him. He's still speaking—hosting the podcast, traveling nationwide, and helping families fight back. Kevin Brennan's mental illness is on full display as he screams at Flimsy Greenberg for creating a dashboard. Chad Zumock calls into Misery Loves Company to brag about asking successful comics to fund his new special. For some reason life is going well for both Kevin and Chad because Pat Dixon doesn't own a car. It makes sense as long as you don't think about it. Vinnie Paulino joins the show to check in on Scorch with his cohost B.O.B. from 95X. Every story Scorch tells is based on being poor. Artie Fletcher's stand up special includes anecdotes about employees at the comedy club and people in the audience he knows. Why would that be on a comedy DVD? Jerry Banfield has come up with yet another new business model. After an update on the Christian woman he's completely fallen in love with, he explains a new service he thinks he's going to charge $20,000 for. Opie's new friend Erik Marino is somehow less funny than Ron, Tony, and Opie. Opie's on fire because he had to poop a lot after eating sugar-free ice cream. A nagy áttörést New York hozta meg. Ahogy a nagymamája mondta: "Ember tervez, Isten végez." Ez a mondat végig visszaköszön a beszélgetés során, és jól összefoglalja azt a hitet, amely segítette őt Magyarországtól egészen Hollywoodig.
