Show Notes This week on MSB: Victory Gundam episode 51. After a wild road-to-air-to-space trip that took us from Kasarelia all the way to Kasarelia, we've reached the final stop and we're ready to type up our TripAdvisor reviews. Opinions on Victory's ending seem to vary quite a big, and ours certainly did! Please listen to it! As usual, this week we're focusing on the final episode itself and reserving our judgment of the show as a whole, along with our responses to listener questions, for 10.52 (in two weeks). Enough about Mobile Suits, let's talk Heavy Metals! The D.Sserd is, as best as I can tell, the GM of Heavy Metal L-Gaim. It's an old school Nagano design, which is another way of saying "awesome." We'll have to put off the L-Gaim itself for another time, but we do want to double back to it. That guy's cool too. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! The role of mobile armors in Gundam is always interesting. What does a machine gain by discarding its human-like form? It can indicate determination, or amorality, or y'know, all sorts of stuff. 00 definitely thinks using a mobile armor makes you a bad person. Don't you GN Arms me, those are attachments. The Trilobite? The Alvaaron? The Empruss? The Regnant? Even the Gadelaza? Piloted by bad people, or at least people who are currently being bad. Fighting gold! This Final Boss weirdo kinda shows up out of nowhere. But despite that, it's a pretty compelling design! Ostentatious isn't usually my aesthetic, but it really works for the Alvaaron, a tastefully tacky piece of metal. With wings! That's fun. Prepare your beam sabers and polish your Zaku helmets-this episode of Play Comics is about to launch straight into the Universal Century! We're diving headfirst into the PS2 classic Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs Zeon, where the only thing more intense than the space battles is trying to pronounce “RX-78-2” three times fast. Joining the fray is none other than Derek Van Dyke from Super Deluxe GamesCast and Castle Bravo, who's here to help us decide once and for all: Is it better to fight for the Federation, or is life just more fun in a mono-eyed mobile suit? Expect hot takes, cooler mobile suits, and at least one attempt to dodge a colony drop with nothing but sheer podcasting bravado. So grab your joystick, pick a side, and get ready for a barrage of wit, wisdom, and way too many references to Newtypes. The One Year War has never sounded this entertaining. Learn such things as: How real is the science of Gundam? Do you really have to play as one of the characters to have a game that feels right? If I thought of a story arc that already existed, does that make me a genius or just guilty of pre-plagarism? And so much more! You can find Derek on BlueSky and of course as part of the Super Deluxe GamesCast and Castle Bravo. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. If you want to help support the show check out the Play Comics Patreon page or head over to the Support page if you want to go another route. You can also check out the Play Comics Merch Store. Show Notes This week: Victory Episode 49! Nothing says Epic Space War like bikinis! Plus we ask the important questions, like is Haro a misogynist? As Dylan says, it's kinda wild we haven't covered this one already, but that's what happens when you live at the whim of the dice. The Den'an Zon may go even further with imperialist aesthetic than even the mobile suits of Zeon, but by focusing on a more German Empire WW1 thing, it ducks the Nazi comparison in favor of examining old world European aristocracy as aesthetic. It really looks like a mobile suit wearing a mobile armor like clothes, but apparently, it isn't. It's a weird face-lookin' machine with a smaller torso poking out of its mouth. A perfectly normal design for a normal machine from a normal show. Heck, the show's so normal they even call the base form of each gundam machine in it the "Normal!" Can't argue with that. This month, we're trying something new by releasing the individual segments once a week, to spread the mountain of content we recorded out over the whole month. And that concludes with the month's last segment, but certainly not its least: The Monthly Ten, the part of the show where Sean and Jonathan challenge each other to make increasingly ridiculous Top 10 lists. In this month's installment, Jonathan tasked Sean with ranking the Top 10 most unlikely creative collaborations for the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, in honor of the currently airing GQuuuuuuX, a partnership between Gundam creators Sunrise and the Neon Genesis Evangelion vets at Studio Khara. What Sean comes up with will surprise you, and maybe just make you wish to see some creative miracles unfold. Enjoy! In 2010, Sunrise graced the world with the best Gundam film ever made: Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie -A Wakening of the Trailblazer-. After five years of covering Gundam, we finally review this masterpiece to give it the credit it so rightfully deserves. So buckle up and join us aboard the Ptolemaios for the last time as Allelujah fights Waymo; zombie Ribbons takes a WWE chair shot; Setsuna grabs the Metal Cap and joins the Borg; and the T-1000 gets renamed the Extraterrestrial Living Metal Shapshifters. Someone should really check on the Azadistanis... Happy AFD, listeners!
Armor modeling enthusiasts, mark your calendars! In this deep-dive conversation with Neil Stokes, newly elected President of the Armor Modeling and Preservation Society (AMPS), we unveil everything you need to know about the upcoming AMPS International Convention taking place May 15-17, 2025, at the Penn Harris Hotel in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.Neal shares details about what promises to be their biggest show yet, with approximately 700 competition models expected and over 110 vendor tables already booked. Located just across the river from Harrisburg and near both Hershey Park and Gettysburg Battlefield, the venue offers convenience for attendees and activities for accompanying family members. What sets AMPS apart from other modeling competitions? Every single entry receives written feedback from judges, helping modelers understand their strengths and areas for improvement. This educational approach has fostered an incredibly high standard of craftsmanship that continues to impress even veteran attendees.Beyond the competition floor, visitors can look forward to special attractions including "Lady Lois," a full-scale M3A1 Stuart tank on display Friday, an extensive raffle, and seven specialized seminars including four hands-on workshops covering advanced modeling techniques. This year's theme is "African Armor," encompassing everything from World War II North African campaign vehicles to modern conflict equipment. Neil offers insight into AMPS' strategic future, actively reaching out to "armor-adjacent" modeling communities including sci-fi, Gundam, and Warhammer enthusiasts. These newer modelers often enter the hobby through different cultural influences but bring tremendous talent and fresh perspectives that enrich the traditional armor modeling community.Whether you're a dedicated armor modeler, curious about expanding your skills, or simply love meticulously crafted miniatures, the AMPS International Convention offers something for everyone.Model Paint SolutionsYour source for Harder & Steenbeck Airbrushes and David Union Power ToolsSQUADRON Adding to the stash since 1968Model PodcastsPlease check out the other pods in the modelsphere!PMM Merchandise StoreSupport the show with PMM Merchandise!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. This week on Play Comics, we're taking you on a high-speed tour through Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, a PS2 classic that's equal parts thrilling dogfight simulator and love letter to Universal Century lore. From piloting iconic mobile suits to reenacting pivotal battles from the One Year War, this game has everything a Gundam fan could ask for—except ground-based combat (but hey, who needs dirt when you've got asteroids?). Joining us for this cosmic adventure is George from Shortbox Summary, who brings his signature wit and deep knowledge of pop culture to the discussion. Together, we'll explore what makes Encounters in Space stand out among Gundam games, share our favorite moments from its sprawling story modes, and maybe even speculate about Zeon's questionable interior design choices. Strap in—it's going to be a bumpy ride through the stars! Learn such things as: Did George really say starting with SD Gundam is a viable option for me?
