Read transcriptSome magical girl stories are content with sparkly transformations and heartfelt speeches. This is not one of those stories. This time on Play Comics we're warping through the glitter-strewn chaos of Sailor Moon: Another Story, the Super Famicom RPG that took the 90s manga and anime vibes, mashed them with branching timelines and turn-based redemption arcs, and asked, “What if destiny needed a save state?” It's console combat where emotional baggage weighs more than your inventory, and every villain monologue comes with a friendship discount. Chris isn't battling cosmic paradoxes solo though. Cass Proffitt from Distant Echoes jumps into the senshi squad to help unpack how this game balances moon crystal lore with JRPG grind, and whether it's a radiant tribute to Sailor Moon or just the sparkliest timeline meltdown in gaming history. Together they're digging into what survived the trip from Naoko Takeuchi's pages to console controllers, complete with overdramatic plot twists and Jupiter's undefeated punch stat. Dust off your brooch, queue the theme song, and prepare for senshi squad analysis laced with villain rehab debates and moon prism power-ups that hit different on pixelated screens. Learn such things as: Why Another Story might actually be canon. Sort of. Maybe. How localization shaped the Western Sailor Moon fandom. What the point of it all is if you don't even have a cat to help guide you along the way. And so much more! You can find Cass on their podcast Distant Echoes. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. You can read the full thoughts from CountZeroOr here: Why we never got them? Well, I'd probably say it's a combination of a couple factors: First, for much of the 16-bit console generation (and the 8-bit console generation before that), there was still a very considerable anti-Japan bias in terms of marketing of console games, based on the idea that American audiences wouldn't buy anything actively presented as being Japanese, so Anime presentations were out (this is part of the reason why the first Ranma 1/2 fighting game was changed into “Street Combat”) – the Golgo 13 games were viewed as something of an outlier. While some later titles in the 90s would take chances on presenting themselves as being more anime (i.e. Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle), they were also titles for properties generally marketed to guys, as also around this time video game marketing was increasingly getting more gendered, something that would continue throughout the 90s and into the 2000s and beyond. As a property targeted for girls, Sailor Moon didn't fit in the gender essentialist marketing plans of the video game industry. The fact that, since it's a RPG, it also has a ton of text to localize and translate (versus to the Sailor Moon beat-em-ups), certainly didn't help. The next episode is going to be Uncanny X-Men. That's right, we're taking another look at the NES game. What are your experiences with this one? If they remade it today what characters would you want included that weren't in the original? The Pemmy & James Kinda-Sorta-Hopefully Funny Cartoon Podcast
It's the classic boy meets girl story, except complicated by arranged engagements, martial arts mayhem, and a gender bending curse that makes the boy get into romantic trouble from every possible angle. Ranma 1/2 is Rumiko Takahashi's smash hit manga, adapted into anime in 1989 and after a false start in a crummy timeslot it became a massive hit at home in Japan and would help herald bigger things to come for Japanese animation here in the US. Come and listen, we owe Nabiki money if we don't get a certain number of downloads!
Mitsugi and Detective Otaku go through the court system and bring you another segment of "Anime Under Arrest". What crimes will we be charging the anime community/industry with? AnimeJapan has come and gone, and with it came the expected deluge of too much stuff to go over, but we did and we made sure to not leave out any important things for this year's rundown of the convention. Hopefully. It's been a bit hectic lately, things may slip from time to time. But along with that, we've FINALLY got some clarification for this whole Steel Ball Run rollout mess, even more new seasons announced after AnimeJapan like Frieren and Ranma 1/2, another case of studio consolidation with Lay-Duce's new owners, a quick look at the Anime Trending awards before doing another expected gawk-and-gander at Crunchyroll's schmooze-fest of an "awards" show - we know, we know, but it's just so easy for content. We're as guilty as all the rest. Also, going forward: whenever something gets mentioned from a past episode, that episode will now be linked. It'll make some missing context make more sense. past episodes for reference: #97 - Tokyo Babylon 2021 #104 - Saga of Tanya the Evil #178 - Rascal dub fiasco #186 - Suikoden anime announcement intro - the shortest intro ever 1:15 - the AnimeJapan prelude: Osaka, the top 10, and JoJo 23:40 - all the AnimeJapan stuff (Kindergarten Wars, Sparks of Tomorrow, July and October premieres) 1:06:55 - the news item buffer zone (Mao on Hulu, Frieren S3 in 2027, Lay-Duce acquired by Hayate) 1:44:44 - yet another CR Anime Awards kvetch-fest 2:21:00 - home video releases (DANDADAN S2, Rock is a Lady's Modesty, Dr. Stone) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Welcome, welcome! It's our wrap show in which we talk about and score the shows we finished during the fall cour. Show Notes 0:00: Before Justin and Helen talk about their final Fall anime shows and all the Weird News of the year, the two hosts send their condolences to the family and friends of Shikako, who passed away at 37 due to choroidal melanoma, a rare form of cancer that develops in the eye. This news comes as, based on when Shikako died, Manchuria Opium Squad was announced to go on an irregular serialization towards the end of October. Main Topic: Fall 2025 Final Impressions 4:25: We have a situation where you’ll hear very little talk of new Fall anime watched in this section because it’s mainly dominated by sequels (Spy x Family S3, Campfire Cooking S2, Ranma 1/2 S2) a horse girl anime (Part 2 of Cinderella Gray), and a summer season continuation (Gachiakuta). The new anime comes down to both hosts lamenting the state of Pass the Monster Meat, Milady (25:38), and another new anime where a “villainess” solves all her problems by punching things. Probably! No, the two hosts do not manage to get off topic and talk about unrelated things. Maybe! Weird News of 2025 55:30: You probably feel this year was long and yet fast. This is totally true based on the amount of weird news that occurred this year. You have your distribution craziness, politics very much becoming a thing, and SAG-AFTRA finally striking a deal; anime and manga also infiltrating other forms of entertainment; anime going into the wayback machine to produce a couple series starting next year; Anime and AI being one of the most dominant topics this year (and many to hilarious effect); and no, we will never forget the saga of Tai Chi Chasers (2:03:49), because it’s just too weird! Thank you for listening to TheOASG Podcast in 2025. We will be looking forward to returning in 2026. Happy New Year to all! Things do be falling around anime land. The usual crew arrives ready to discuss the fall 2025 season of anime. Final seasons of My Hero Academia and To Your Eternity, a new season of Ranma 1/2, spinoffs in Ginpachi, and against everyone's better judgement another season of One Punch Man. We have a few new shows too, so as always when one thing ends something else begins. Will those new things have any staying power or are they bound to slide into obscurity? Plus news and recommendations, you know the drill.

Here's my original description for the episode:On this episode, we talk about how it feels like we've gone back in time when it comes to anime we're watching (from Ranma 1/2 and Dragon Ball Daima, to Gundam G-Quacks!), and I talk a little bit about seeing Tomcat's Big Adventure on the big screen! Then, we dig into our experiences seeing the stage show Sailor Moon: The Super Live--Laura seeing it in the UK, and me seeing it it on the USA tour. “Mama Mork, Papa Mindy” (November 5, 1981) Thus far, we have not attempted the Happy Days universe of TV shows, and we're starting with this season four Mork & Mindy that has our interspecies marrieds creating a baby that redefine their gender roles. Essentially, Mork hatches an egg from which comes a child that puts a shocked Mindy in the role of father. It's silly, but as returning guest Diamond Feit helps us explain, it's also modelling parenthood outside typical gender conventions. Listen to Diamond's previous episode with us about Ranma 1/2! Listen to our previous adult baby episode (a Patreon exclusive!) with guest Nina Matsumoto! We have episode transcripts courtesy of Sarah Neal. Our logo was designed by Rob Wilson. This episode's art was designed by Ian O'Phelan.
