I went to the cinema yesterday. I went alone. I watched a new Studio Ghibli film. The Boy and the Heron, a Ghibli film, started in the UK last month. I asked the Japanese lessons what people thought about the film. Some people thought it was interesting, some thought it was not interesting and some thought it was ok. I thought it was very interesting.

Today I will be talking to Lasse Lehtonen about his book The 14th Moon, which came out with Bloomsbury this year (2022). With me today is Dr. Brooke McCorkle, who wrote her own book on Japanese musicians Shonen Knife, a band who also feature in my own work on punk in Kyoto. The 14th Moon is the title of an album by the Japanese singer-song writer Yuming, who although not punk at all, shares much with and impacted in one form or another the musicians Brooke and I look at, especially, the female musicians among them. This should not come as a surprise, as Yuming (Matsutoya Yumi) is one of the most influential figures in Japanese popular music history.  A singer-songwriter recognized globally for her songs used in Miyazaki Hayao's beloved animations, Yuming has captured the hearts of listeners of different generations since her debut in the early 1970s. Her fourth album, The 14th Moon, released in November 1976, was a milestone in establishing her signature style: the posh, “city” sound that later paved the way to the 1980s City Pop and 1990s J-pop, and even what Brooke calls Josei or women rock. In addition to examining the album's astonishing stylistic versatility and its complex background, Lasse explores how Yuming revolutionized the position of women in Japanese popular music. The 14th  Moon teaches us much about the turbulent and transformative time of its recording and help us understanding the social changes in Japan of the 1970s, a usually under researched era in cultural history, after the stormy and radical era of the 1960s and just before the heyday of the consumerist bubble era of the 1980s. A beloved Japanese anime move released in 1988, My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, as they deal with the separation from their mother who is in the hospital, and their adventures with the forest creatures they meet called the Totoro. In Joe Hisaishi's Soundtrack for My Neighbor Totoro Soundtrack (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020), Kunio Hara analyzes the film’s score and image song collection composed by Joe Hisaishi. The movie’s catchy theme song, along with the rest of the music, contribute to the film’s nostalgic exploration of children’s inner lives and the power of imagination to combat the very real traumas of childhood. Part of the 33 1/3 Japan Series, this short book explores the collaboration between Hisaishi and Miyazaki Hayao, the film’s creator and director. Hara considers his subject from a variety of perspectives, from a musical analysis of key sections of the score and image album to an investigation of the film’s importance as an icon of Japanese pop culture. Kunio Hara is an Associate Professor of Music History in the School of Music at the University of South Carolina. His research centers on nostalgia, exoticism, and Orientalism in late Romantic opera and music in post-war Japan. Kristen M. The worlds of cinema and illustrated fiction are replete with exciting data for the historian of religion. Drawing on Tradition: Manga, Anime, and Religion in Contemporary Japan (University Of Hawai’i Press, 2012), by author Jolyon Thomas, sets up a robust theoretical model for examining how the concept of religion is deployed in these mediums. Thomas outlines how the category religion can be understood within the Japanese context and various reasons why religious markers and themes are reproduced in manga and anime culture. His detailed illustration of the typologies of the manga/anime/religion nexus is achieved through both narrative analysis of illustrated fiction and film, as well as ethnographies of digital and material environments. In our conversation we discussed the production and marketing elements of manga, its uses for proselytization, some ritualized responses of audiences, famous authors and their works, such as Tezuka Osamu’s Buddha, religious movements derived from manga and anime culture, the religiously nationalistic elements of Kobayashi Yoshinori’s On Yasukuni and On the Emperor, the filmic career of Miyazaki Hayao, and the role of manga in Aum Shinrikyo’s rise and fall. We come back to Miyazaki Hayao's work in this episode and pick of the first Studio Ghibli film, 1984's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Jason admits his sacrilidge for not necessarily being a fan of Miyazaki's films. We then discuss piracy in anime fandom and debate the topic as to whether or not fandom can exist without it now. We then wrap it up with a review of a little OAV called Juumu GUNM but is probably better known as Battle Angel/Battle Angel Alita.
