Ready? Go! Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Welcome back to Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu. In today's episode, Tom Bilyeu and co-host Drew dive headfirst into the latest political and economic firestorms dominating the news cycle. They break down President Trump's controversial blockade of Venezuela, exploring what it means for U.S. foreign policy, the global oil market, and America's ongoing chess match with China. Tom Bilyeu brings his analytical lens to questions about economic bubbles, including why the Schiller PE ratio just hit a historic high—and what that might mean for investors and everyday Americans alike. You'll also hear thoughtful conversation around the recent Bandai beach massacre, troubling ties to ISIS, and the rise of Islamist extremism—with Tom Bilyeu and Drew taking care to unpack the media narratives and the importance of differentiating between extremism and broader religious communities. Plus, the episode covers the Vanity Fair piece on Susie Wiles and its fallout within Trump's inner circle, exploring the role of media framing, spin, and the power dynamics behind the headlines. Throughout, Tom Bilyeu and Drew peel back the layers on what's really driving global events, why historical patterns of anti-Semitism and economic uncertainty matter today, and how to navigate turbulent times with clear vision—and a healthy dose of skepticism. Grab your headphones and settle in, because it's time to separate fact from spin and get perspective you won't find anywhere else. In 2001, Nintendo released the e-Reader, a quirky card-scanning accessory for the Game Boy Advance that blended trading cards with tiny bursts of digital content. This week, we explore the long road that led to its creation, tracing the evolution of barcode gaming from Japan's Barcode Battler craze to Bandai's Datach and even arcade hits like Mushiking and Love and Berry. We follow how Pokémon cards, dot-code technology, and Japan's card culture shaped the device, and why the e-Reader thrived briefly in Japan but stumbled in the West. Our conversation also looks at the legacy it left behind—QR codes, AR cards, Amiibo, and physical-to-digital play. Join us as we swipe, scan, and rediscover the Nintendo e-Reader on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

Read transcriptDigivolve your PlayStation controllers and prepare to shuffle your way through the most wonderfully confused identity crisis in gaming history, because this week on Play Comics we're tapping into the pixelated card-battling chaos that is Digimon Digital Card Battle for the PS1! Released in 2001 when every entertainment franchise on Earth was racing to cash in on the trading card game gold rush sparked by Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, Bandai decided their digital monsters deserved a piece of that sweet, sweet card-slinging action. The twist? They didn't just adapt the existing Digimon trading card game – oh no, that would be far too simple. Instead, they created an entirely NEW card game exclusively for this PS1 title, because apparently someone at BEC thought “You know what kids collecting physical cards really need? A completely different set of rules that only exists in digital form!” What emerged was a gloriously polygonal fever dream where Veemon, Hawkmon, and Armadillomon became your partners in a card-battling odyssey through Battle Arenas, all while you sacrifice Digimon from your hand like some kind of digital monster cult leader gathering “DP” (Digivolve Points, not whatever your brain just went to) to evolve your creatures into increasingly ridiculous forms. It's rock-paper-scissors meets card game mechanics meets “please stop making me grind the same battles 300 times to unlock the secret final boss.” Joining us for this digivolved discussion is the phenomenally talented Sahoni from Bramble Wolf Games! When they're not busy crafting games that actually mean something or channeling their Queer and Indigenous (ᏣᎳᎩᏱ ᏕᏣᏓᏂᎸᎩ) storytelling magic into unforgettable tabletop experiences, Sahoni brings their narrative expertise to help us understand how this PS1 oddity somehow convinced an entire generation that carrying around 30 digital cards was infinitely more practical than the hundreds of physical ones weighing down their backpacks. So crack open that PS1 jewel case, practice your best “I'm going to pretend I understand these Support Card effects” face, and prepare for an episode more entertaining than watching the same Digimon battle animation for the 47th time. We'll explore whether this card-game-that-never-was actually honored the spirit of the Digimon franchise, or if it just left us wondering why we couldn't trade our digital cards with friends like we could in literally every other TCG game of the era! Learn such things as: If watching the same PS1-era polygonal battle animations 300+ times builds character or just destroys your will to live? Why the game forces you to read tiny PS1-resolution text on cards and whether that counts as an accessibility nightmare or just “authentic retro experience” Why creating a brand-new trading card game that only exists in one video game is either pure genius or complete madness (spoiler: probably both) And so much more! Haim Saban is a Billionaire and it all started with a trip to Japan and only one thing on TV. Way to Go Go Power Rangers. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [OG Law Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast, and we're talking empires today. Stephen Semple's there. I'm here. I'm Dave. Gosh, if anybody that ever thought I was reading the intros like that, it's not okay. Stephen Semple: Mystery solved. Dave Young: Mystery solved. Never the same twice. So Stephen, you told me that we're going to talk about Power Rangers today, and I think of that like an entertainment franchise sort of thing, but also what also toys. Stephen Semple: They are also toys, yes. Dave Young: Was it one of those things where it's like, oh, we're going to invent this toy and then we're going to have an entertainment program to go along with it? Because these things seem to go hand in hand these days. Stephen Semple: Yeah, and they very much was hand in hand. The two came about very much together. And it's got an interesting history to it because it was launched in 1993 and it was created by Haim Saban, who is now a billionaire. He's gone on to do a bunch of things. Not just making a ton of money from this, but if you look him up on Wikipedia, it's estimated he's worth a couple of billion dollars. So he's done well in the entertainment industry. And Hasbro acquired the company back in 2019 for $522 million. So it certainly has contributed to his wealth. And he was a cartoon theme songwriter is where he got his start. Dave Young: Really? Okay. Stephen Semple: He worked on things like Professor Gadget and Masters of the Universe. Those were the things that he was writing theme songs for. Dave Young: Oh, cool. Stephen Semple: But he wanted to create his own property. He always wanted to have his own thing. And at the time, he's on a business trip in Japan, and the only thing you can get on the TV is this Japanese animated series called Choudenshi Bioman, which is part of what they call a Super Sentai series. And Saban was fascinated by this concept of five masked people in spandex fighting monsters. So it's in 1985, and he produces a pilot of Bioman. And the idea of adapting Japanese productions to the US market started basically in 1970 with Marvel. Marvel did a deal with Toei Company to exchange ideas, and Toei created a Japanese version of Spider-Man that did actually really well. And what Marvel tried to bring to the US, not so much. So it sort of worked. Initially, America to Japan was working, but Japan back to America was not working as well. But that didn't stop Saban. So what he decided to do was create a show where they could keep the original action scenes, because the action scenes are complex and hard to film, and then just replace the other scenes with good-looking American actors. So basically when there was the action scenes, it was actually the original Japanese content. And then they would put in... Dave Young: Oh, wow. Stephen Semple: Yeah, he just basically said, okay, here's this Japanese thing. I'll keep the original story. I'll keep the Japanese content. And then where any of the acting is, I'll put in good-looking American actors. Basically that footage is already shot and the toys already existed. So it was also economical to import it to the United States. This was his idea. So he gets a meeting with Toei and Bandai, and they agree. What the heck? Sure. Take our content.

Show Notes Thank you all for your patience and your kind words of sympathy. We're ready to talk about Gundam once again, and this week a question from a listener prompts us to look back at the whole Tomino Era of Gundam, and on that perfect note we end Season 10. Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario. You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. Listeners in the Americas and Oceania can learn more about the indigenous people of your area at https://native-land.ca/. We would like to thank The Lenape Center for guiding us in creating this living land acknowledgment.
