Japan is often described as having “spirituality without religion”, but what does that actually mean? In this episode, author Hiroko Yoda joins the Krewe to break down how spirituality quietly shapes everyday life in Japan, from nature and kami to shrines, folklore, and even anime. With personal stories and insights from her new book, Eight Million Ways to Happiness, this conversation offers a fresh look at happiness rooted in connection, not belief.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. “Remember when” is the lowest form of conversation–we put that theory to the test on this episode on the pokemania of the late 90s and early 2000s. After unexpected success in Japan, Pokemon launches in America in late 1998 and becomes ubiquitous in America soon after as not a single media, but as an entire world accessible through video games, TV, cards, movies, and plush toys. We discuss the globalocalization of Pokemon by Nintendo, Kawaii and the Otaku in this episode. A fun, informative look at the people driving Japan's craft beer boom.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. It's almost Halloween! So for this month's ReView episode, I'm revisiting a fun-sized shoujo horror OVA. Based on a 70s manga and animated in the 80s by some of the top horror anime staff at Madhouse, it's the Bride of Deimos OVA! There is been one disappointment after another recently. Chatty Patty almost goes to a Kodansha House lottery event, Crunchyroll suddenly doesn't know how to make subtitles, and Wandance's animation is a disgrace. At least with the bitter there is a little bit of sweet in the form of some Fall 2025 anime that caught our attention. Warning: Adult topics discussed. Not suitable for listeners under 18.In this special episode, we dive into the controversial manhwa Secret Class… and we're bringing our characters along for the ride! Join us as we explore the story through a comic debate format, breaking it down into The Good, The Bad, and The Weird. From the stunning artwork to the psychological twists, we'll highlight what makes this manhwa stand out—and what makes it… well… questionable. We tackle serious topics too, like unsafe sexual behavior and non-consensual situations, all while keeping the conversation humorous and engaging.Plus, get a glimpse into my background in adult film distribution and my experiences with some of the most notorious hentai and adult content—think Kenshin and Kaoru, Tsuma ga kirei ni natta wake, Euphoria, and more. This episode isn't just about shock value—it's about understanding the media we consume, laughing at the absurd, and learning why consent and safe practices matter, even in fantasy worlds.Warning: Adult topics discussed. The words "the final phase" keep crossing our minds. Of course they do. It's 2025 and Muzan finally let us in to the most bombastic, physics defying, and confusing place of residence in all of fiction. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is upon us. We went to watch it to bring you back the feels, the top-tier animation, on top of the sword play action that made us wait for so long. Shout out to the water tribe, if you know you know, cue the Upper Moon 4 strumming her biwa (yes, we're cultured) and join us on this multidimensional escapade. Every effort is made to keep spoilers to a minimum. (The only exception being older titles)

Send us a textRemember when cell phones weren't just rectangular slabs of glass? When having the right phone clipped to your hip made you the coolest person in the room? This week, we're diving deep into tech nostalgia while also exploring Apple's latest offering.Lexi shares her honest review of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, highlighting the silver colorway (not her first choice), improved telephoto lens, larger battery, and vapor chamber for better heat management. The most impressive feature? Live translation that actually works in multiple languages. But as we discuss these incremental improvements, we can't help wondering: is Apple truly innovating anymore, or just making minor tweaks to the same design? This leads us down memory lane to the golden era of mobile devices. From the iconic T-Mobile Sidekick with its satisfying flip mechanism to Blackberry Curves, Motorola Razors in rainbow colors, and Nokia's gaming-focused N-Gage. We reminisce about a time when phones had personality and carriers like Nextel, Alltel, and Cingular created unique experiences that have vanished in today's consolidated market. We also explore Tesla's autopilot functionality and the concerning ways some drivers bypass safety features, custom truck modifications, and our milestone of reaching 300 followers on TikTok. It's a conversation that bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and the character-filled gadgets of yesterday. What was your favorite old-school phone? One-time unchallenged holy land of otaku, Tokyo's Akihabara was a heaven for anime, manga, video game, maid café, and collector's items. But today. it is different. So what happened to Akihabara? We chart the past from Akihabara's early days as an electronics district to its growth in the 1990s–2010s as a thriving subculture hub during the golden era of otaku culture. We'll then look at which anime, doujinshi, figure fever, and maid cafés transformed the district into a fans' pilgrimage site from all over the world. Now, as Japan's economic downturn-chasing weak yen and pandemic tourism bonanza coinciding with it, Akihabara is evolving — welcoming more tourists than hardcores. Is it otaku heaven anymore? Or has it become a theme park version of what once was? We split it all up — past, present, and future. Check out our social media below
