Since just recently, the official Sailor Moon Youtube Channel let folks watch official recordings of Sailor Moon: The Super Live, I figured this episode where I talk to friend of the podcast Laura Watton about our experiences watching The Super Live in the US and the UK, would be one that a lot of you might enjoy. Here's my original description for the episode:On this episode, we talk about how it feels like we've gone back in time when it comes to anime we're watching (from Ranma 1/2 and Dragon Ball Daima, to Gundam G-Quacks!), and I talk a little bit about seeing Tomcat's Big Adventure on the big screen! Then, we dig into our experiences seeing the stage show Sailor Moon: The Super Live--Laura seeing it in the UK, and me seeing it it on the USA tour. Were there any big differences between the two productions? The words "the final phase" keep crossing our minds. Of course they do. It's 2025 and Muzan finally let us in to the most bombastic, physics defying, and confusing place of residence in all of fiction. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is upon us. We went to watch it to bring you back the feels, the top-tier animation, on top of the sword play action that made us wait for so long. Shout out to the water tribe, if you know you know, cue the Upper Moon 4 strumming her biwa (yes, we're cultured) and join us on this multidimensional escapade. Every effort is made to keep spoilers to a minimum. (The only exception being older titles)

Send us a textRemember when cell phones weren't just rectangular slabs of glass? When having the right phone clipped to your hip made you the coolest person in the room? This week, we're diving deep into tech nostalgia while also exploring Apple's latest offering.Lexi shares her honest review of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, highlighting the silver colorway (not her first choice), improved telephoto lens, larger battery, and vapor chamber for better heat management. The most impressive feature? Live translation that actually works in multiple languages. But as we discuss these incremental improvements, we can't help wondering: is Apple truly innovating anymore, or just making minor tweaks to the same design? This leads us down memory lane to the golden era of mobile devices. From the iconic T-Mobile Sidekick with its satisfying flip mechanism to Blackberry Curves, Motorola Razors in rainbow colors, and Nokia's gaming-focused N-Gage. We reminisce about a time when phones had personality and carriers like Nextel, Alltel, and Cingular created unique experiences that have vanished in today's consolidated market. We also explore Tesla's autopilot functionality and the concerning ways some drivers bypass safety features, custom truck modifications, and our milestone of reaching 300 followers on TikTok. It's a conversation that bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and the character-filled gadgets of yesterday. What was your favorite old-school phone? One-time unchallenged holy land of otaku, Tokyo's Akihabara was a heaven for anime, manga, video game, maid café, and collector's items. But today. it is different. So what happened to Akihabara? We chart the past from Akihabara's early days as an electronics district to its growth in the 1990s–2010s as a thriving subculture hub during the golden era of otaku culture. We'll then look at which anime, doujinshi, figure fever, and maid cafés transformed the district into a fans' pilgrimage site from all over the world. Now, as Japan's economic downturn-chasing weak yen and pandemic tourism bonanza coinciding with it, Akihabara is evolving — welcoming more tourists than hardcores. Is it otaku heaven anymore? Or has it become a theme park version of what once was? We split it all up — past, present, and future. Check out our social media below

Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. This month, I'm revisiting one of Tezuka's TV films in a brand new way: New anime publisher SkySet Entertainment has released the 80s sci-fi fantasy film A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose on bluray in America--and they created a full English dub for it! The latest Gundam TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, wrapped up its 12-episode run this week, which means Weekly Suit Gundam is back to break it all down! A collaboration between Sunrise and the Otaku madmen at Studio Khara – including director Tsurumaki Kazuya, writer Enokido Yoji, and Evangelion creator Anno Hideaki himself – GQuuuuuuX returns to the Universal Century for an alternate-history story in a world where Char Aznable, not Amuro Ray, got in the Gundam; but it's also a brand new tale about three kids living in the aftermath of this revised history on Side 6. Those two impulses – Gundam fan service and telling an all-new story – don't always sit naturally together within this short run, and while GQuuuuuuX is an undeniably gorgeous production, with outstanding character designs, animation, music, and action, we're not sure whether or not it holds together as its own fully realized corner of the Gundam universe. Enjoy, and be sure to join us later this year for the next season of Japanimation Station, where we will be surveying all the works in the career of original Gundam creator Tomino Yoshiyuki!  Read Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vKSubscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastSupport the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuffOriginal Music by Thomas Lack https://www.thomaslack.com/

This week, our Grand Tour takes us to one of the most unique series we've ever covered: Gonzo's 26-episode cult classic Welcome to the N.H.K.! Based on the 2002 novel by Takimoto Tatsuhiko, this 2006 series explores Japan's hikkikomori (social withdrawal) phenomenon, modern Otaku culture, internet-era suicide pacts, and many more contemporary issues, doing it all with startling clarity, immense empathy, and a whole lot of very wacky humor. It's a finger-on-the-pulse series for Japan in the mid-2000s, but one with many resonances for viewers all over the globe, leading to a rich and engaging conversation between our hosts. There is no other show out there quite like Welcome to the N.H.K. – it almost feels like a conspiracy…Enjoy, and come back next week as we watch the Yu-Gi-Oh! series The Man doesn't want you to see: the original 27-episode Toei anime from 1998 (a.k.a. “Season Zero”). Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:09:15Eyecatch Break: 1:09:15 – 1:10:01Welcome to the N.H.K. Original Air Date: Oct. 31, 2018 Recently I did a harmless story about a buried . . . I mean hidden treasure and unknowingly uncovered a cult centered around a man, his fake treasure, and a deadly treasure hunt. Then we travel to Japan to learn about the Otaku Killer, Tsutomu Miyazaki. Deformed at birth, Miyazaki was always an outsider. But when an obsession with gore and living in fantasy world became too much to handle, this young man took his unspeakable desires out on the world. And finally, get your dresses and tuxes ready because we are going to go to a wedding that involves one bride and her conspiracy to take down her beautiful sisters.
