Kenji Mizoguchi nos traslada al Japón de la era Meiji, al Tokyo del año 1888 y a un teatro kabuki en la Historia del último Crisantemo. Mujeres inteligentes, valientes, en la sombra, como Otoku -Kahuho Mori-, esta niñera sobre la que circula todo el relato, circula en torno a su altruísmo y en torno al aprendizaje de un niño mimado, Kikinosuke – Shotaro Hanagayi-, vástago de un prestigioso actor, debe mantener el abolengo de su apellido.
