Political analyst Tobias Harris (Founder & Principal of Japan Foresight) joins the pod to break down the foundations of Japan's government system, how it compares to the U.S., and why voters view politics the way they do. We explore the major and emerging parties shaping the landscape, the issues driving debate today, and how international pressures and global events influence domestic policy. Send us a textRemember when cell phones weren't just rectangular slabs of glass? When having the right phone clipped to your hip made you the coolest person in the room? This week, we're diving deep into tech nostalgia while also exploring Apple's latest offering.Lexi shares her honest review of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, highlighting the silver colorway (not her first choice), improved telephoto lens, larger battery, and vapor chamber for better heat management. The most impressive feature? Live translation that actually works in multiple languages. But as we discuss these incremental improvements, we can't help wondering: is Apple truly innovating anymore, or just making minor tweaks to the same design? This leads us down memory lane to the golden era of mobile devices. From the iconic T-Mobile Sidekick with its satisfying flip mechanism to Blackberry Curves, Motorola Razors in rainbow colors, and Nokia's gaming-focused N-Gage. We reminisce about a time when phones had personality and carriers like Nextel, Alltel, and Cingular created unique experiences that have vanished in today's consolidated market. We also explore Tesla's autopilot functionality and the concerning ways some drivers bypass safety features, custom truck modifications, and our milestone of reaching 300 followers on TikTok. It's a conversation that bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and the character-filled gadgets of yesterday. What was your favorite old-school phone? One-time unchallenged holy land of otaku, Tokyo's Akihabara was a heaven for anime, manga, video game, maid café, and collector's items. But today. it is different. So what happened to Akihabara? We chart the past from Akihabara's early days as an electronics district to its growth in the 1990s–2010s as a thriving subculture hub during the golden era of otaku culture. We'll then look at which anime, doujinshi, figure fever, and maid cafés transformed the district into a fans' pilgrimage site from all over the world. Now, as Japan's economic downturn-chasing weak yen and pandemic tourism bonanza coinciding with it, Akihabara is evolving — welcoming more tourists than hardcores. Is it otaku heaven anymore? Or has it become a theme park version of what once was? We split it all up — past, present, and future. Check out our social media below

What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. This month, I'm revisiting one of Tezuka's TV films in a brand new way: New anime publisher SkySet Entertainment has released the 80s sci-fi fantasy film A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose on bluray in America--and they created a full English dub for it! So what better time to both revisit this somewhat obscure classic to see if I still enjoy it, AND to see how the new English dub sounds. How does anime Spock sound in English? The latest Gundam TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, wrapped up its 12-episode run this week, which means Weekly Suit Gundam is back to break it all down! A collaboration between Sunrise and the Otaku madmen at Studio Khara – including director Tsurumaki Kazuya, writer Enokido Yoji, and Evangelion creator Anno Hideaki himself – GQuuuuuuX returns to the Universal Century for an alternate-history story in a world where Char Aznable, not Amuro Ray, got in the Gundam; but it's also a brand new tale about three kids living in the aftermath of this revised history on Side 6. Those two impulses – Gundam fan service and telling an all-new story – don't always sit naturally together within this short run, and while GQuuuuuuX is an undeniably gorgeous production, with outstanding character designs, animation, music, and action, we're not sure whether or not it holds together as its own fully realized corner of the Gundam universe. Enjoy, and be sure to join us later this year for the next season of Japanimation Station, where we will be surveying all the works in the career of original Gundam creator Tomino Yoshiyuki!  Read Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vKSubscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastSupport the show at Ko-fi ☕️ https://ko-fi.com/weeklystuffOriginal Music by Thomas Lack https://www.thomaslack.com/
