Using a unique setting for a horror film, Romero takes his basic zombie premise of consumption and broadens its scope both literally and metaphorically. In effect, he makes a bigger, meaner horror film while also making a richer, more satisfying satire than his previous outing in the genre, criticizing the American notion that living is not enough in and of itself, it is instead living well that gives us purpose.
