This past Tuesday, December 17th, celebrated the birthday of filmmaker and UCSB alum Gregg Araki. Back in March of this year, we were joined with Araki at the Pollock Theatre for a screening of his newly restored 90s classic, Nowhere, in addition to a Q&A. This event was co-sponsored by UCSB's film and media studies program, and our very own KCSB-FM. Araki is known for directing films such as Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation, Smiley Face, his work on the show 13 Reasons Why, amongst other films. His film ‘Nowhere', along with the other films within his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy have recently been remastered and restored from the 35mm negative to 4k. It's complete with scenes that were deleted for the original release due to rating restrictions, and the original score. KCSB's Kelly Darroch spoke with Araki for a few minutes after the screening and Q&A!

Gregg Araki, probably best known for THE DOOM GENERATION (1995), though not prolific, he has come out with a number of films of note including MYSTERIOUS SKIN (2004). The script was written by Araki based off a novel of the same name written by author Scott Heim. A Patreon pick from one of our listeners, the podcast takes a look at the film.Brian Lackey (Brady Corbet), a young man, remembers passing out as a child for unknown reasons. During one of his episodes he sees a shadowy figure staring down at him. When he sees a documentary about alien abductions on televisions, he goes visits a young woman his age that claims she too had been abducted. His discussions with her lead to him searching out Neil McCormick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who appears in photographs with him as a youngster. Does Neil have an answer or is there a bigger story? The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brady Corbet, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Michelle Trachtenberg, Bill Sage, and Elizabeth Shue. Due to its subject matter, the film received the “dreaded” NC-17 rating. Controversial, the film still received fine reviews from critics including Roger Ebert. Your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts.

Complex moral and philosophical questions, the show's Quentin Tarantino-level obsession with feet, the smoldering love that clearly burns between Light and L, and a presentation of the hosts' Scream rankings comprise just a few of the talking points on this episode. Directed by Tetsurō Araki, Death Note stars: • Japanese cast: Mamoru Miyano, Shidô Nakamura, Kappei Yamaguchi, Aya Hirano, Kimiko Saito, Noriko Hidaka, Nozomu Sasaki, Naoya Uchida, Vincent Tong, Masaya Matsukaze, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, and Naoko Matsui. • English cast: Brad Swaile, Brian Drummond, Alessandro Juliani, Shannon Chan-Kent, Christopher Britton, Colleen Wheeler, Cathy Weseluck, French Tickner, Kirby Morrow, David Hurwitz, Heather Doerksen, and Tabitha St. Germain. WARNING: THIS MOVIE AND DISCUSSION REFERENCE CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE Folks, we're in the final week of MOVIES ARE GAY and if you thought we were gonna settle on Rainer Werner Fassbinder for our sad boy fix then you were very much mistaken. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JoGoLe as his closest movie reviewer friends call him.) really went hard in the 2000s, and this movie he starred in alongside Brady Corbet was perhaps one of the starkest examples of the results of childhood sexual abuse ever put to film. One of JoGoLe's best performances here in Gregg Araki's 2004 flick “Mysterious Skin”. It's fucked up. NGL. We promise to end MOVIES ARE GAY on a more upbeat note but this movie is incredibly sincere for its intensely descriptive subject matter. Unique and challenging. It's worth your time if you can handle it. Hear us tell you all about it. Beer and a Movie with the Weast Side Boys!

Mysterious Skin is a 2004 coming-of-age drama film written, produced, and directed by Gregg Araki, adapted from Scott Heim's 1995 novel of the same name. The film tells the story of two pre-adolescent boys who both experienced sexual abuse as children, and how it affects their lives in different ways into their young adulthood. One boy becomes a reckless, sexually adventurous prostitute (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), while the other (Brady Corbet) retreats into a reclusive fantasy of alien abduction.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by filmmaker Gregg Araki (The Living End, Nowhere, Mysterious Skin) to discuss the re-release and restoration of his mid-1990s cult classic The Doom Generation, which stars Rose McGowan, James Duval and Johnathan Schaech. Gregg talks about what it's been like to revisit the film, what makes each of his three leads perfect for their roles, how the film got the subtitle “A Heterosexual Movie,” and how and why he cast people like Christopher Knight from The Brady Bunch, Lauren Tewes from The Love Boat and Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss in cameo roles. Gregg also talks about the darker themes of the movie and how young people today seem ever more doomed than they did in the 90's, how he approaches sex scenes, watching the movie again with an audience at this year's Sundance Film Festival and whatever happened to the kick-ass belt buckle Jonathan Schaech wore in the movie. Other topics include: his recent forays into television with his series Now Apocalypse and short-term directing gigs on shows like American Gigolo and Dahmer, why he called his production company Desperate Pictures, the upside of film school, his punk rock roots and that time a fan told him that watching The Doom Generation actually made him gay. www.strandreleasing.com

Scottish musician, prolific composer and audio engineer, Robin Guthrie is one of the founders of the legendary band, The Cocteau Twins. Throughout the band's history, Guthrie was the principal songwriter, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and handling most of the programming and effects. In addition to his ongoing work as a producer and engineer, his musical career included his collaboration with Siobhan de Mare and co-founding the band Violet Indiana. He also released several collaborative albums with the acclaimed ambient composer and pianist, the late Harold Budd as well as John Foxx from Ultravox and Mark Gardener (Ride) along with numerous film scores such as Gregg Araki's “Mysterious Skin”2004  and “White Bird in a Blizzard” 2014 just to name a few. Following the released of his EP in October called Mockingbird Love,  his first full length instrumental album, his first album in nine years since “Fortune” is called “Pearldiving “ which is available via Soleil Après Minuit.  He released another EP called "Riviera" on December 3, 2021 which is available on CD, as well as digital on all major streaming and listening platforms. http://robinguthrie.comhttps://robinguthrie.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna RemixedEvery Saturday on MODSNAP Alternative RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com3pm to 5pm (HST/Hawaii Standard Time)5pm to 7pm (PST/Pacific Standard Time)6pm to 8pm (MST/ Mountain Standard Time)7pm to 9pm (CST/Central Standard Time)8pm to 10pm (EST/Eastern Standard Time

As the guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for The Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie's unique sonic palette helped spearhead and popularize the dream pop sub-genre, with songs that emerged like hazy daydreams through his unique combination of melody and his focused use of effects on albums like 'Treasure', 'Blue Bell Knoll' and 'Heaven or Las Vegas.' During that time, Guthrie also did extensive production work for a variety of artists including The Wolfgang Press, The Gun Club, A.R. Kane, Lush, Ian McCulloch, Guy Chadwick and The Veldt. While the Cocteau Twins folded in 1997, Guthrie forged ahead, continuing to produce, and also collaborating with artists like the late Harold Budd (including their score for the 2004 film Mysterious Skin), John Foxx, Mark Gardener among others. In addition, Guthrie has also led a prolific and engaging career all his own, and speaking of, he's back after a 9 year absence with both an EP ('Mockingbird Love') and a full-length album ('Pearldiving') both of which showcase his inimitable, ethereal and emotive sound through evocative instrumentals. In today's interview, Guthrie discusses why he's been away for so long, why he decided to put out two releases so close together, his creative process and signature sound, his memories of working with Harold Budd, the legacy and influence of The Cocteau Twins, and much more. There are few performers who manage to maintain a high profile in the public eye, and who are perpetually coveted by filmmakers, in the way that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has. Having started as a child actor in hit films like “A River Runs Through It” and “Angels in the Outfield,” Gordon-Levitt came into adulthood while starring in the iconic sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun” and the fan-favorite rom-com “10 Things I Hate About You.” It was in the 2000s where his star rose into the stratosphere, turning in widely acclaimed work in films such as “Mysterious Skin,” “Inception,” and his frequent collaborations with Rian Johnson, including the lead roles in “Brick” and “Looper.” This is all without mentioning his Golden Globe-nominated performances in “(500) Days of Summer” and “50/50,” or his directorial debut firestorm, “Don Jon,” which Gordon-Levitt also wrote and starred in, or the fact that Gordon-Levitt is as talented a musician and singer as he is a performer and filmmaker. With a huge resume of beloved films under his belt, Gordon-Levitt has been somewhat absent from our screens recently, with his biggest acting credits in the past few years being “Snowden,” “Project Power,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The actor also began to shift more of his efforts towards ramping up operations on HITRECORD, a collaborative media platform owned by Gordon-Levitt that fosters collaboration between its users as well as Gordon-Levitt himself. For example, one user might create a short animation, which can then be “remixed” by another user who adds original music, a third user who does voiceover narration, and so on, until the original submission has turned into a collaborative, complete project. HITRECORD now boasts a user base of over 80,000 people and pulls in about 1,000 pieces of original, user-created media every day. However HITRECORD isn't the sole reason for Gordon-Levitt's absence from the silver screen and it just so happens to serve as the genesis for his latest venture, "Mr. Corman:" parenthood. Writing, starring in, and even directing eight episodes of the 10-part miniseries which streams on Apple TV+ this summer, Gordon-Levitt, now 40, reflects on his life and the new perspective that comes with fatherhood through the lens of an alternate reality. He plays Josh Corman, a middle school teacher in San Fernando who struggles with a crisis of conscience when he considers what might have been if he had pursued a musical career instead of becoming a teacher. You can hear all about “Mr. Corman”, including why it was essential to bring additional writers on board, how the arrival of COVID-19 affected the show's scripts while it was already in production, and how becoming a real-life father directly influenced the inception of the show. The first two episodes of “Mr. Corman” are available now on Apple TV+, and the remaining episodes will debut on the platform weekly, beginning this Friday, August 13th. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

One of best ways to enter and appreciate the original, prolific brain of Joseph Gordon-Levitt is through the lens of hitRECord, the open, collaborative production company he founded in 2005, and one of the most creative and inspiring uses of the Internet ever. Its nearly 100,000 members submit projects – films, stories, songs, drawings, you name it – for other members to edit, build on and evolve. Gordon-Levitt credits directing short films on hitRECord with teaching him what he needed to know to make Don Jon, his first feature film as a writer, director and star. It was a darkly comic but ultimately hopeful tale about what happens when we become too connected to our devices, consuming people as things and communicating at versus with each other. His effort was rewarded with critical acclaim rare for actors who have the audacity to become auteurs; more importantly, audiences dug it. A lot of artists might find hitting it out of the park on their first time at bat daunting, but it just made him want to do more, and on a more collaborative level. That’s because Gordon-Levitt has never been fond of one-way streets – not for communication, not for critiques, not for creating, and especially not for careers. He could’ve ambled down his own pretty easy and lucrative path after early childhood success in commercials, films and most famously, NBC’s hit sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. Instead, he went to Columbia University, largely out of a desire to reclaim the feeling of “not knowing what I was going to be” – an open question for many college freshmen, but few actors who’ve worked steadily from the age of four. When he found himself roaming the streets of New York with a video camera, he knew a return to acting was inevitable, but he knew it would have to be in unexpected roles – not to make an artistic statement, but to prove to the business (and himself) that he didn’t have to be just one thing. When such roles weren’t immediately forthcoming, his restless creativity found an outlet in hitRECord. The roles he was seeking eventually surfaced in films like 500 Days of Summer, Brick, Inception and Mysterious Skin; and hitRECord projects began to take on momentum. Good times for someone who “gets off on the stuff I never anticipated would happen.” He believes we should welcome versus dread the unexpected, that change is the most natural state, that good becomes great when we all participate and, as poignantly demonstrated by his late brother Dan, that “people can be whatever the hell they want to be.” All of which posits that the best artists are collaborators, and the best collaborators tend to have a stubborn optimistic streak. Maybe it’s that enthusiasm (and a certain degree of DIY showmanship) that invests his performance as funambulist Philippe Petit in Robert Zemekis’ The Walk with such verve and authenticity. That, and his superior make-believe skills – a blank green screen is no match for a fertile imagination. In this issue, we talk to him about that film, the role of technology in modern life, what he’s learned from being on both sides of the camera, and his hopes for future of hitRECord. For those still unclear on that concept, tune in to our broadcast episode for Gordon-Levitt’s demonstration – and the musical results. Thanks, well,…everyone.

CONTENT WARNING A number of measures were taken to avoid exposing the child actors to the sexual and abusive aspects of the story. Although their parents were given the entire shooting script to review, the boys were given separate scripts which included only the activities they would be performing, and their roles and the characters' relationships were explained to them in innocent terms. All of the sexual abuse involving children is implied rather than being directly depicted, and the scenes in which this seduction and abuse takes place were filmed with each actor performing alone and addressing the camera rather than the other actor, then edited together, so the children did not see or hear the performance by the adult actor playing the abuser. (This subjective approach to filming was consequently used in various places throughout the film.   BASED on novel- by Scott Hiem A teenage hustler and a young man obsessed with alien abductions cross paths, together discovering a horrible, liberating truth. Mysterious Skin tells the story of two pre-adolescent boys who both experienced a strange event as children, and how it affects their lives in different ways into their young adulthood. One boy becomes a reckless, sexually adventurous male prostitute, while the other retreats into a reclusive fantasy of alien abduction.     Director: Gregg Araki Writers: Gregg Araki (screenplay), Scott Heim (novel) Stars: Brady Corbet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elisabeth Shue | See full cast & crew » Released June 24th 2005 BUDGET- N/A BOX OFFICE- $713 thousand OPEN- $17,425 #61 TOP 5 Kingdom of Heaven House of Wax Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy Crash The Interperter Same Box office as Kung Fu Hustle   SHOW NOTES SEND YOUR QUESTIONS:  onthesubjectpodcast@gmail.com OR   Follow us on:  Twitter:  @onthesubject1 Instagram:  @onthesubject Website: http://www.geeksrising.com   LOGAN NAUGLE  Twitter:  @thatlogan Instagram: @thatlogan website: thatlogan.com   ZACHARY ROSS JACKSON Twitter: @BossRossJackson  Instagram: @boss_ross_jackson   MALCOLM RUSSEL-NELSON Twitter: @capnmalcolm

Book One comes to a close as Brenna and Joe delve into the dark and horrifying world of Scott Heim's 1995 novel Mysterious Skin and Gregg Araki's 2004 adaptation, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this week. Take the trigger warning to heart as both texts deal with very mature themes. Brenna and Joe, while appreciative of the craftmanship of both texts, frequently resort to the word "horrifying" to describe their experiences. Rest assured that there is lightness to be found, though, including Joe's embarrassing mix-up over Heim's last name, the struggle to reconcile Brian as a "boring" character and questions about the tastiness of peanut butter peach pie. In the last homework report: Brenna works through her relationship with The CW's Riverdale while Joe catches up with listener emails from Leo and Andrew. Choreographer John J Zullo joins host Robin Milling to discuss the new season of John J Zullo Dance/Raw Movement featuring three works inspired by memory. A film student at American University, John saw Bill T. Jones Arnie Zane dance company piece Still Here and discovered the emotional impact dance can achieve. Referring to the season as his Memory Suite, All What This Do Has You Happened See? Before is about perception and fragments of memory while This Equisite Diversion/Mysterious Skin is about blocked memories and the process of recovery. Six foot glowing plexi-glass panels play with perception as a metaphor for moving through corridors in the mind. The third piece Project XIII explores varying memories through 12 different versions of one movement. This Equisite Diversion/Mysterious Skin was inspired by Scott Heim's novel Mysterious Skin about two young boys who are sexually exploited. John says, 'it had a really strong impact both in my own personal experiences having been sexually abused at a very young age and then dealing with that.' Also discovering one of his dancers was sexually abused when he was young drove the piece, interpreting moments of the book through movement. John insists it's not a victim piece, but more about navigating through a traumatic experience. The audience will experience it raw and real.

Hey hey, not going to lie, posting this kind of late so this may not be all that informative. Paul largely watched television this week, so we chat about Louie season 2 and the recent happenings in South Park, Colorado. Then Nathan tackles films old and new, including Contagion, the very stylish (but oh so empty) Drive, Mysterious Skin (which earns its NC-17) and the first documentary ever, Nanook of the North. So club a seal, snack on its innards and listen to another hour of movie chatter with Paul and Nathan. NOTE: DO NOT ACTUALLY KILL A SEAL. THEY MAY LOOK SILLY BUT THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO LIVE. UNLESS YOU LIVE IN THE NORTH AND YOU MUST BECAUSE YOU ARE ON THE BRINK OF STARVATION. THEN IT’S TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE. BUT HEY, MAYBE MOVE SOUTH TO A WARMER CLIMATE. Shock World Service 032 At The End She Was Gone by Jon Averill 09/04/10 London, United Kingdom 1. Idioma – Landscapes It took me weeks to settle on the right track to open this episode but I think this was the right choice, or maybe not, can I change? 2. Luke Vibert - Sharp A2 This is a track i've loved for years but never really had a chance to share. Its taken from the Mo' Wax compilation 'Headz 2'. Luke Vibert has produced astounding music no matter what style he applies himself too. This track has the elements of what became a the clichéd 'trip-hop' style but when the piano drops the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. 3. Roll The Dice - Guadeloupe A more positive aspect of the internet music revolution is the chance to discover music that may have otherwise passed you by. Roll The Dice are a case in point. An enchanting collaboration between two Swedish studio boffins, Peder Mannerfelt & Malcolm Pardon. 4. Sir Lady Java - My Mom Said This song took me about fifteen years to track down & as far as I know it was never officially released. Its taken from a soundtrack to the H-Street skateboard video ‘A Soldier's Story'. Thinking back my first exposure to alternative music came from the soundtrack to skate videos. 5. Harold Budd - Neil's Theme Harold Budd, an American ambient/avant-garde composer (& sometimes poet). ‘Neil's Theme' is a collaboration with Cocteau Twins & Violet Indiana guitarist Robin Guthrie and is taken from the soundtrack to ‘Mysterious Skin'. 6. Moondog – Couplet The shortest ever track on the podcasts comes from Moondog. An artist I have become obsessed with recently so no doubt you'll be hearing a lot more from him in forthcoming podcasts. 7. Lionrock - Snapshot On Pollard Street I recently rediscovered Justin Robertson's 'An Instinct For Detection' from 1997. Another release that that has been lost in the mid nineties big beat mist. 8. Hawkwind - Welcome To The Future Freakout interlude from the legendary English 'space rock' act. 9. Piano Magic - A Fond Fairwell From their latest album 'Ovation'. On first listen it reminded me a lot of Dead Can Dance & on further investigation DCD percussionist Peter Ulrich features on this track. So basically what i'm saying is that I was absolutely right. 10. Popul Vuh - Der Tod De Corba Verde Another act that have been a huge influence on me since I was very young. This track is taken from the ‘Cobra Verde' OST. 11. Luisine - Two Dots One of the first tracks I picked out for this podcast when I started it way back in 2009. Its a perfectly formed piece of electronic pop & sonically it has a lot in common with this podcasts opening track from Idioma. 12. Brian Eno – Becalmed Brian Eno could be the one artist who best sums up the World Service. He's appeared numerous times in episodes from our DJs. This track 'Becalmed' is from my favourite album of his, 'Another Green World'. 13. Adrian Munsey - I Think Its Going To Rain Today A crackly old 7" 'I Think Its Going To Rain Today' is a Randy Newman track has been covered by David Gray, Bette Midler, Claudine Longet, Judy Collins, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond, Peggy Lee, UB40 & Peter Gabriel. This may be the best version. 14. Orbital - Belfast/Wasted In my teen years while most were listening to Nirvana and other long haired paragons, my walkman cassettes principally contained music from Orbital. It probably speaks volume of my lack of emotional depth that two middle aged bald men making instrumental music were the most important band of my teenage years. This is a rare version of 'Belfast' released as a promo only in 1995 and features new vocals by Grant Fulton. In memory of Maria Averill

“Do you ever get the urge to run, run get gone gone/and a lot of things get abandoned along the way don’t they?!”“With a lot of the produced music you hear, its hard to hear the real person in it” points out Orphans and Vandals intriguing front man Al Joshua “I was really keen to keep it more alive: that's why we did the album ourselves in our front rooms, we set up the microphones and that's were we recorded ‘Strays’ and ‘Terra Firma.” The genesis of London based multi-instrumental five piece Orphans and Vandals was borne of Joshua’s similarly frustrating fruitless musical situation, the grind of playing in dead end bands peddling the same old same old, constrained by the hackneyed melodies repeated every night in the same clichéd form. Orphans and Vandals front man AL Joshua talks passionately about a band that changed his life, its birth inspired by a trip from London to Paris – his own pilgrimage to retrace the footsteps of poet Arthur Rimbaud. With this new found lust for escape he let himself off the leash, starting to record songs that ”we're for him” Joshua explains "I wrote and recorded the first few ‘Christopher’ and ‘Headful of Tears’ in my house at the beginning, and just gave it away when people asked for it. ...They were done my bathroom, our neighbours were constantly on cocaine fuelled porn marathons, and I liked to keep the sounds that fall through the cracks in the background...This release of creative freedom saw him giving away these nascent recordings to anyone who asked, and was swiftly followed by the union with Orphans and Vandals bassist and song writing partner Raven. They then set out with a rough idea of what they wanted from the remaining members Francesca and Quinta on strings, percussion and glockenspiel, and Gabi on drums that would form the crux of a very different kind of sophisticated rock band, one that attempts to skew expectations of form, meter, and song. A spontaneity of creative process that big label bands who take months to produce and over dub, to over think to quite frankly shine shit before its ready for your mass consumption might baulk at, thus all Orphans and Vandals sessions were recorded live: 'I like to keep the mistakes in the recordings most of my favourite albums have them.' Joshua notes 'the thing with producing is you only get exactly what you planned on doing, there’s no accidents that bring in unexpecteds, I try and leave room for slight accidents or random chance.' Maybe that's why the songs he written in the last eighteen months documented in their superb debut album ‘I am Alive You Are Dead’ stand out so much in a sea of rock pastiche, skinny boys with their guitars, and vacuous two dimensional 80s revivalists, they live and breath with life, snippets of dreamlike imagery, brutal autobiography, literary couplets and warm instrumentals that rattle with aggression, melancholia and euphoria: a reflection of the people that crafted them and the modern world that seeks to suck the humanity from our veins. The album’s finest moment is the emotionally exhausting epic ten-minute symphony Mysterious Skin, which is stupendous and life affirming. Cinematic instrumentation that rises and falls like the wild tide, below Joshua's sprawling stream of consciousness. It pierces your heart and calls to mind the seedy urban poetry of Lou Reed, the sexual ambiguity of Rimbaud, and the half spoken/half sung working class humanism of Jarvis Cocker, moving from intricate emotional details to the huge foreboding underbelly of the city, back to a stranger's bed (a boy or a girl? Who knows.) Toward a literal sexual climax, into sky scraping chanted refrains, propelling rambunctious rhythm sections, huge stirring violins musical saw, and harmonium, flailing to a cacophony. The twitching opener Strays hints at the satellite town frustration of New Model Army singer Justin Sullivan: and the stirringly life affirming choral epics of the Arcade Fire. Their last double aside single Terra Firma/Christopher from Summer '08 confirmed the strength of their material - plaintive, pared back, Bowie-esque balladry telling tales of urban decay fleshing out characters that seethe with passion, anger and disenchantment. The wonderful twinkling instrumentals of ‘Argyle Square’ gently opens its eyes, and onto London’s streets, where dizzying images of the past and present collide. While closer ‘Head full of tears’ shows another side a downtuned, intimate, delicacy. The Arcade Fire and Pulp have often been drawn as modern comparisons, maybe a resurgence in the intelligent lyrics of Cocker, and the acceptance of multi instrumental groups like the Arcade Fire might mean there’s more of a place for Orphans and Vandals right now, but Joshua surprisingly reveals to “not listening to bands at the moment, I’m bored of all that at the moment” he claims to have never heard the Canadian troupe and even the references to Pulp leaves him a little cold “I couldn’t stand any of that Britpop stuff really.”A veracious consumer of poets like the aforementioned Rimbaud, the songs of William Blake, the work of William Burroughs, a year spent obsessing over Francis Bacon, the sheer literary quality of his lyrics, shifting effortlessly from dreamlike, to intricate detail, and back to naked brazen honesty of the kind that you rarely here within popular music. Listen to their superb debut album, and it’s best moments Strays, Terra Firma, Christopher and Mysterious Skin you'd be forgiven for thinking that Al Joshua painstakingly, constructs each lyrical piece before he enters the studio, but like everything else about Orphans and Vandals the creative process is spontaneous and led by an instinct to keep it alive, to keep it fresh to the ears ”Everything has got to be one in one take or one performance, unlike mass produced that is the finished product whereas I've got no interest in the finished product at all: I'm more interested in the process. That was the performance of that day, if it was recorded another time it could sound very different, its all on instinct and chance.”This is reflected in their raucous ever evolving live performances, where sometimes not even the band know what journey the next song is going to take them next: ”Every time we play a song live its different, plus I like to change it up, play with the band, it keeps it fresh They're all brilliant musicians and It keeps us all on our toes. Nobody knows what’s going to happen, if we fuck up a small part of a song nine or ten times, the tenth time could be really special… We’ve been booed before but how often do you get the opportunity?” Central to the Orphans and Vandals experience is Al Joshua’s unique vocal style: a starkly original new voice combined with emotionally complex streams of consciousness, a half spoken, half sung Estuary English it’s a style that allows him freedom to roam within, and astride his band's multi-layered oscillating orchestral sound, it’s drawn favourable comparisons with some of his own musical touch points Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Steve Reich, for him it's all about turning himself on and challenging the listeners preconceptions of the rock vocal, his approach inspired by poets and the spoken word: ”That’s the thing that keeps it interesting singing and using your voice in a different way, listening to(Jack)Kerouac reading his poems set to music I'd just listen to him without any real interest in what he was saying..., when you hear someone with a real interesting voice you can here the melodic metre, you get all the tonal things and all the notes between the tracks, which you aren't going to get on a standard rock song.” Some lyricists like to create oblique imagery, allowing you to draw your own conclusions, or characters they can hide behind, Joshua’s work is intimate yet spliced with imagery, yet he is reticent about defining it, preferring to keep the mystery (get the pun?) behind the words, leaving you the listener to draw your own conclusions. “I would never be interested in writing a autobiography, it’s certainly intimate ... It’s like putting yourself out there naked at times, there are plenty of images and I suppose you could call certain things true. But everything becomes a movie once it’s written down, everything becomes a lie the moment someone talks about it.”Orphans and Vandals are a rapidly emerging band you must hear in 2009, an act that will challenge your preconceptions of what a modern rock band can be. Creating music of the street, thrillingly dangerous, sometimes brutal yet rather like life intensely beautiful and human all at the same time. Looking to the future, Joshua excitingly reveals that’s he’s already constructing songs that will make up their next record ‘When we’ve finished with this album I’ll get back to writing. The songs I’ve started are quite different. I suppose they will decide how we’re going to play them’ and he’s aware of not repeating a formula, though ‘I don’t want it to be the same. They’re quite different everyone in the band plays various instruments and is capable of reinventing themselves.’ We look forward to the journeys they will take us all on next …The Orphans and Vandals album 'I am Alive You Are Dead’ is out now on Fourth Floor. All content syndicated from http://wwwg.odisinthetvzine.co.uk

Orphans and Vandals are an epic indie/folk poetic five piece from London. With a bit of luck, this year they could take over your airways. Led by the ridiculously talented singer/guitarist Al Joshua and song writing partner bassist Raven, with Francesca and Quinta on strings, percussion and glockenspiel, and Gabi on drums, the band are adept at painting vivid string augmented worlds influenced by their disconnection, confusion, of their experiences in modern life, J G Ballard and The Velvet Underground, the brutal inner lives at the heart of their London home and their journeys to Paris. Their finest moment so far is the emotionally exhausting epic ten minute symphony Mysterious Skin, which is stupendous and life affirming cinematic instrumentation that rises and falls like the wild tide, below Al's sprawling stream of consciousness. It has the ability to transport you into a scene of deep personal introspection and back out into the universal within a few literary couplets. They are seeking to add a whiff of realism, emotion and humanity to modern rock music in 2009, which would be a special feat indeed. Orphans and Vandals will release their debut album in April 09.
