"Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the Earth." It's a double feature summer at Movies That Made Us Gay, and we watched the original "Jurassic Park" and the latest entry "Jurassic World: Rebirth" with our friend and the newest member of the MTMUG Five Timers Club, Hiko Mitsuzuka. His monogrammed smoking jacket is on back order. Listen, what else can be added to the conversation about the original Jurassic Park? Yes, Laura Dern was a sexual awakening for many a young gay girl (and boy), yes the Dilophosaurus is a lesbian icon (much like the aforementioned Laura Dern), and yes Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck) in kahki short-shorts made us feel some type of way with those bulging thighs. But we're here to add to the conversation as well as talk about the latest - and possibly queer-est (most queer?) entry into the Jurassic canon. While there may be subtext indicating a possible future love story between Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Zora Bennet (Scarlett Johansson), we would like to point out that Jonathan and SacrJo could still turn out to be gay besties in the inevitable sequel. Did Scarlett let out a sigh of relief when she found out her male lead in this film is an out gay male actor? Possibly. Should the filmmakers have just given in and let Jonathan play the role using his normal accent? Listen, Sam Neill's hybrid Kiwi-American accent worked just fine in the original. "Slutty little glasses" and questionable accents aside, Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson are a welcome addition to the Jurassic family. Is that a read on previous cast members? We'll let you decide. "Clever girl." Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio. This week the Film Rage Crew went to the seventh installment of the Jurassic franchise. This time Scarlett Johansen is battling dinosaurs. Then they were treated to the surprise of the weekend, the Canadian action flick 40 Acres where Danielle Deadwyler continues to impress. And then they watched the 41st Anniversary edition of This is Spinal Tap. Did the boys enjoy it as much as the first two dozen times they saw it? Then finally Jim and Bryce were forced to watch Chuck Norris and a dog in a movie that is for nobody and leaves the boys wondering, how did this thing even get greenlit in the first place? Send us a textDinosaurs and box office numbers find a way, even when creativity doesn't. The latest Jurassic installment stomped through theaters with a staggering $318 million global opening, proving once again that this prehistoric franchise remains Hollywood's gold standard for bankable intellectual property.Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali headline Jurassic World Rebirth, bringing star power to a franchise that's circling the creative drain yet continues to draw massive audiences. We dissect what works in this seventh installment – primarily Gareth Edwards' undeniable talent for spectacular visual set pieces – and what falls flat. From the breathtaking Titanosaurus sequence in tall grass to the genuinely thrilling underwater T-Rex chase (finally realizing a sequence from Crichton's original novel), the film delivers exactly what audiences expect from the franchise: dinosaurs hunting humans in increasingly elaborate scenarios. But beneath the impressive technical achievement lies familiar franchise fatigue. Characters feel underdeveloped despite the talented cast, emotional beats are undercut by the need to move to the next set piece, and the film's structure often feels algorithmically designed to hit nostalgic beats from previous entries rather than charting bold new territory. As this film kicks off another planned trilogy, we question where the franchise can possibly go from here without completely rehashing familiar territory. We also discuss Christopher Nolan's mysterious Odyssey trailer that premiered exclusively before Jurassic World screenings and look ahead to next week's Superman release – another major franchise reboot that faces similar challenges in balancing fan expectations with creative revitalization. Can James Gunn deliver something fresh in a crowded superhero landscape, or are we destined for another case of franchise fatigue? Join us as we explore these questions and more on this week's Excuse the Intermission.Support the show
This week, Tommy is joined by David Iacono, who is currently starring in “Jurassic World Rebirth.” The film has become one of the biggest movie releases of the year. When he’s not dodging terrifying dinosaurs, you may have seen David in "Dead Boy Detectives," "Fear Street: Prom Queen" and the fan-favorite series, “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” Today, David opens up about never-before-told stories from his time filming the latest installment of the Jurassic Park franchise (like that random FaceTime from Steven Spielberg while on set in Thailand), having to drown in one of his most heart-racing scenes, and what filming with dinosaurs - what he calls “tennis balls on sticks” - is really like. We also celebrate his character Cam on “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and find out if he is Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, what he has learned about himself through playing Cam, and that epic cast group chat. And David shares so much more that you won’t hear anywhere else, including something powerful that he has never said before.Subscribe, rate, and review this episode if you enjoyed this conversation!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Listeners, allow us to welcome you to a podcast 166 million years in the making... Like most people interested in nature, we absolutely had a dinosaur phase (Jack arguably never left it). It's been an aim of ours to do some sort of dinosaur special on the show for a while, but never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd actually get to JOIN AN EXCAVATION. Have a listen as we visited a quarry in Oxfordshire to meet Dr Duncan Murdock and a team of experts, that are carefully uncovering dinosaur footprints for the first time since the Jurassic... Hang around until the end of the show too, as we've got some big podcast news that we wanted to share with you. The gang of thugs dons their most practical jungle gear and reluctantly boards the biotech boat for Gareth Edwards' Jurassic World Rebirth. Scarlett Johansson leads a mission to harvest dinosaur DNA in what Universal hopes is the beginning of a new trilogy—but does this franchise still have life in its genetic code, or has it gone full dino-extinct?In this episode, Pete Wright, Steve Sarmento, Tommy Metz III, Justin “JJ” Jaeger, and Mandy Kaplan unpack everything from ADR overload and missing velociraptors to why this script might have been written by a chatty AI trained exclusively on soft reboots and midday sarcasm. They examine the film's visual flatness, its confused tone, the tragic misuse of Mahershala Ali, and the shocking absence of smart kids—the emotional compass of the good Jurassic movies. There's plenty of laughter, frustration, and jalapeño cheddar popcorn as the panel debates whether the soul of this franchise can ever be resurrected. Spoiler alert: if dinosaurs had a peanut allergy, this movie would be their Snickers bar.Film SundriesWatch this on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at JustWatchTheatrical trailerLetterboxd Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. I saw Jurassic World: Rebirth with Scarlett Johansson, and it was great. We find the silver linings in all of today's headline news stories. A man's BMW rolled off the ramp and smashed his junk. Chuck E. Cheese is creating arcades for adults and "lifelong fans" alike with the launch of Chuck's Arcade. Youth baseball coaches from Illinois got fired after getting naked and running the bases at a tournament in New York. Teacher - Alice Ashton from the UK was swigging from a water bottle full of orange liquid which smelled of alcohol and blaring music from her laptop during the health class. Joey Chestnut dominated Nathan's hotdog eating contest, again. I go through some of his food eating records.

Joe Ochman is an American actor who is most active in voice over roles in various animation shows, films, and video games. He is the fourth and current voice of Jiminy Cricket since 2014.Within a mural of a Ghorlectipod, or Ghorman spider from the planet Ghorman, if one looks closely, the body of the spider is the face of an iconic Star Wars villain - Darth Maul. X (formerly Twitter) user Jammin333 noted that the mosaic design is a deliberate homage to Darth Maul.“Andor production designer Luke Hull shared one of the gorgeous Ghorlectipod spider mosaics from the Ghorman cafe. This one appears to embody Darth Maul, who at one point in The Clone Wars became half cyber-spider. Love the design details down to the inverted crescent moon chin,” Jammin333 said in their post.During the Saturday update, Rebirth received another prediction, with the film looking at a worldwide opening of $312.5 million, ahead of the initial projection of $260 million. That leads to the second-biggest global opening of the year, just behind A Minecraft Movie, which dangerously neared $1 billion and ended its run at $953.1 million, and ahead of Lilo & Stitch, which is soon set to surpass the former as it has already grossed $951.5 million worldwide.Rebirth won't have the biggest opening in the Jurassic franchise, as it trails behind Jurassic World's $525 million. The film also has the second-best offshore opening so far, behind the Chinese animation Ne Zha 2, and ahead of Lilo & Stitch. Jurassic World Rebirth also had the best Fourth of July haul for a No. 1 film post-COVID-19, and it outranked 2024's Despicable Me 4.

It's an explosive episode of the Breakfast All Day podcast for you on this Fourth of July holiday. We begin with the big movie of the week, "Jurassic World: Rebirth" which aims to reboot the decades-long "Jurassic" franchise. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all wildly overqualified for running from freakish, mutant dinosaurs. In theaters. Next up is one of the best movies ever made, and that's not hyperbole: Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece "In the Mood for Love" is back in theaters for its 25th anniversary. If you've never seen this gorgeous, achingly romantic movie projected, here's your chance. The impossibly glamorous Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung co-star. Check here to see if it's playing near you: https://inthemoodforlove25.film/. Then we have another throwback review: "This Is Spinal Tap," which is in theaters for its 41st anniversary. The OG mockumentary about a British rock band on the decline is still hilarious and infinitely quotable all these years later. It's back for a limited run, and you can get tickets here: https://www.fathomentertainment.com/releases/this-is-spinal-tap/. Finally, we did our version of The New York Times' list of the best films of the century. We each picked 10 favorites from the past 25 years, but came at it from different perspectives with very different results. This was a tough but fun assignment! What would you put on your list? Thanks for being here and enjoy the holiday weekend! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

This week we try something a little different — the ⚡️THUNDER ROUND ⚡️ as Jeff Goldblum says in Jurassic Park Uno, “Your [science nerds] were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!”In this special episode, Julian and Trace snagged every dinosaur related question we could fit in a shaving cream can. Send us a textAfter a hiatus and the aftermath of the cancellation of Bonnaroo (2:00), the Gents have finally returned to their regular scheduled broadcast of the EstoBro TV Podcast. It is officially summer time, which means insane weather outside of heatwaves are impacting your favorite vacation spots everywhere. EstoBro breaks with TV with his qualms of the state of Bonnaroo, especially with the third cancellation of the music and arts festival in a span of 5 years. Returning back to the classic format of the show, TV breaks down the results of the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup Finals (14:20). The Oklahoma City Thunder won their first title in franchise history, while the Florida Panthers went back-to-back as champions; the latter having a rematch against the Edmonton Oilers. With July arriving, the biggest movie month of the year is set to take place (37:00). After TV's review of the live action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, the pair also debate on who will rule the box office amongst: Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and Fantastic Four: First Steps; which will all be releasing on separate dates for the month in that order. Finally, to cover the nerdcore of the program, the Gents also review the summer showcase of each major video game company (55:45). Nintendo had a historical launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 at the start of June, while Microsoft announced that this holiday, they will be releasing their own handheld device to compete with Nintendo. It is good to be back, and the Gents are happy to kick off summer with a fresh episode of the podcast!Theme song made by iamRavedadInteract with the Gents of the podcast on the following social media platforms:X (Formally known as Twitter) YouTube InstagramBlog/websiteJoin the Discord serverSubscribe to the official playlist of the podcast

Legendary film producer, director, and documentarian Frank Marshall is my guest on the show today to talk about his working relationship with Steven Spielberg, a creative partnership that goes back to Raiders of the Lost Ark and continues on to this day. Marshall co-founded Amblin with Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy. We talk about what necessitated Spielberg creating his own production company, how they split up their duties to produce some of the best geeky flicks of the '80s, and eventually get to the new entry into the Jurassic franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, which opens in theaters July 2nd. This chat covers a ton of ground, from Peter Bogdanovich to Robert Zemeckis, killer spiders to hungry dinosaurs, and even how a plate of pasta helped convince Spielberg he should call this guy to help produce Raiders of the Lost Ark.
