What does a doomsday drama about nuclear annihilation have in common with a breezy adventure set on the Greek isles? Just the year they hit the big screen. We explore why Fail Safe feels eerily prophetic in the age of AI, and whether or not Eli Wallach should have been doing brownface so much (he shouldn't have). It's Sidney Lumet's tense Cold War thriller Fail Safe, starring Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, and Disney's sun-drenched mystery The Moon-Spinners, directed by James Neilson and featuring Hayley Mills and Eli Wallach. This week we're finally nailing down our Best of the Year lists, and despite the fact that we say every year is crazy, this one is really nuts when it comes to our lists... at least if you compare them to a lot of other critics. So much money was dumped into things that were supposed to launch onto everyone's radar this year, and so many of them bombed, were rather awful, or both. So what gets on the list, and how does that compare to titles that won awards? Tune in to find out and learn about the movies that shined in '24 Plus, we get to Mickey 17, which should have gotten a lot more attention, even if we didn't exactly love it.

Peace and quiet—or just a tractor ride?”In this laugh-out-loud episode of The Ben and Skin Show, hosts Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive headfirst into the hilariously awkward truths about Father's Day. From questioning the legitimacy of the holiday to proposing a radical trade-off—cancel both Mother's and Father's Day to “net out at zero”—this episode is packed with hot takes, heartfelt moments, and side-splitting banter.

Originally aired: March 15, 2019 on Return to the '80s This week on GenX Journeys Throwback Thursday, we're revisiting a gem from the Return to the '80s archives—my incredible conversation with film critic and author Helen O'Hara! Helen writes for Empire Magazine and The Telegraph, and she had just released her brilliant book Best Movies of the 80s when we recorded this episode. We kicked things off by celebrating her book and our shared love for some of the most iconic films of the decade. Then we dove into The Princess Bride—a film beloved by many, and one of Helen's all-time favorites (mine too!). We talked about the legendary cast, memorable moments, and the magic that's made it a cultural classic. But the conversation also took an insightful turn as we explored how the title may have initially alienated some viewers, particularly boys and men, and why Hollywood still tends to avoid feminine-leaning titles. Whether you're a lifelong fan of The Princess Bride or just love geeking out over '80s movies, this one's for you.

The Best Movie Plot Twists I came across an article that was discussing how a good movie will lead you down one path and then in a “Plot Twist” send you down a different and completely unexpected new path. That got me thinking about what were my most memorable plot twists from movies that I have watched over the years. I have come up with four that have stayed with me. What are your favorites? The Sixth Sense (1999) - The twist redefines the entire story, forcing viewers to rethink every scene. It's iconic for its emotional weight and subtle foreshadowing, often cited as the gold standard of plot twists. In this case you learn that Bruce Willis' character Malcolm Crowe was actually deceased. I hate to admit it but I never saw this coming. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - The revelation Darth Vader is Luke's Father altered the saga's emotional core and is still one of the most quoted twists ever. Planet of the Apes (1968) - we are talking about the original here with Charlton Heston. The last scene leads up to the final payoff making it one of the most memorable twists in cinema. Se7en (1995) - The climax delivers a horrific surprise that ties the story's themes together. It's a twist that's both brutal and unforgettable, often debated for its boldness. The twist, John Doe played by Kevin Spacey manipulates Mills played by Brad Pitt emotionally to commit the seventh deadly sin. Braden's Pics: Usual Suspects Fight Club Shutter Island Memento

In Episode 407 of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into a packed lineup of topics, mixing nerd culture, activism, and a little wrestling nostalgia! The episode kicks off with a lively new segment, Best Film/Worst Film, inspired by The John Campea Show. This week, Aubrey and Tim put three legendary directors under the microscope: Steven Spielberg, Rob Reiner, and Quentin Tarantino. They debate and discuss the highs and lows from each filmmaker's career, covering classics like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2, and more — as well as some controversial misfires like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Expect a spirited, insightful discussion full of hot takes and surprising opinions!Next, Professor Aubrey shares her experience participating in another Tesla Takedown protest. Dressed as a narwhal with a sign that boldly declared "Narwhals Against Nazis," she recounts the energy, creativity, and importance of standing up for what's right, blending humor with powerful activism.Tim the Nerd also has a lot to celebrate this week. He talks about his guest spot on The MCU's Bleeding Edge YouTube show, where he joined the crew to break down the 1985 action classic Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Get Tim's behind-the-scenes take and hear why this cheesy, bullet-riddled movie still holds a special place in action movie history. Finally, Tim discusses the WWE's recent efforts to upload more classic content to their official YouTube channel. He reflects on how YouTube may actually be a better home for some older, niche content — compared to platforms like Peacock — and draws interesting parallels to how beloved shows like Jeopardy find new life through accessible streaming options. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Head to his website for information on how to purchase his EP, Here's To You, which is available on all digital platforms.Head to Friends Talking Nerdy's website for more information on where to find us online.

Sean and Amanda return to continue their yearlong project of listing the 25 best movies of the 21st century so far. They discuss Nancy Meyers's ‘Something's Gotta Give,' the 2003 romantic comedy starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, which featured some of the most realized and developed characters of the century. They highlight and celebrate Meyers's auteurist vision, argue why it's the last great studio romantic comedy, and remember one of Jack Nicholson's final performances that featured an incredible balance of his powerful charisma and uglier, stranger side.
