POPULARITY
This week, I invited my four siblings--Cassie Gadd, Brad Singley, Brett Singley, and Hayley Kirkland--into the studio to talk about our top family movies. We intended to each share 5 favorite movies from our childhood and then in our own families, but we definitely got carried away. I'm going to list our childhood movies and then our current favorite family movies by the person who recommended them. I'll omit the ones that we mentioned but do not recommend. (Sorry, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) We also talk about how we make family movie nights happen and what they look like for each of us. Of course, check ratings and Commonsensemedia.org to decide if these movie are appropriate for your families. Movies from Our Childhood (80s and 90s) Musicals: Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain, Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, Newsies, Meet Me In St Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (proceed with caution), Peter Pan (with Mary Martin. Als Freizeitrocker schaut Audioredakteur Owen Connors immer wieder das Mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap an. Richard and Greg jump across the local “pond” from Australia to review three New Zealand films from world-renowned directors Lee Tamahori, Peter Jackson and Taika Waititi. While they have similar responses to two of these films, our film reviewers are (South?) poles apart for the third. Not to worry! For Greg brings a “Kiwi moviegoer's sensation on a stick” into Richard's life, revived from a past Roman holiday. In episode two of our Manhunt series, we explore two international films. From South Korea, New World (2013), a topsy-turvy crime drama. From New Zealand, the playful and whimsical, Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016).Crime dramas have been a staple of cinema since its inception. We find comfort in categorizing characters as good or evil. It provides order in a convoluted world. Actual morality is often murky and challenging to decipher. New World offers a crystal clear reflection of how the world truly operates, rather than a saccharine imagined one. Deep Loyalty and petty betrayal are commonplace, and the lines between good and evil blur, like a spinning merry-go-round. Taika Waititi's distinctive style is evident throughout Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016). This is both a pleasure and a frustration. While the story of two unlikely companions going on the run in the Kiwi woods is delightful, the narrative often seems to lose its way despite the simplicity of the story. The plot path is clearly laid out, but Waititi can't resist taking detours down every zany spur, leaving little room for emotional resistance and refinement. Nevertheless, it remains an entertaining joy ride with a quaint conclusion.
Our second Taika Waititi film to date, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is the funny and heartwarming tale of an odd couple stuck in the New Zealand bush together for complicated reasons…think Thelma and Louise meets Leave No Trace. We invite you to join us as we ramble about arguably (I use the term advisedly
New Zealand film We were dangerous is set during the famous "moral panic" of 1954, when a new invention - the "teenager" - seemed to terrorize the powers that be! Three rebel girls decide to get out from under. Starring Erana James (Uproar), Nathalie Morris (One lane bridge) and newcomer Manaia Hall. With Rima Te Wiata (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as the Matron.
I love you, but you don't know what you're talking about. Actor, comedian, and podcaster Rhys Darby returns to the show to talk about new episodes of The Cryptid Factor show, and all things monstrous and extraterrestrial — as well as the significance of his show Our Flag Means Death, which ended far too soon. You know Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords, the Jumanji reboots. the What We Do in the Shadows film, The X-Files revival, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and most recently as the gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet in Our Flag Means Death alongside his buddy Taika Waititi. But Rhys Darby is also a fan of high strangeness, and is one-third of the long-running podcast The Cryptid Factor with Dan Schreiber, and Leon 'Buttons' Kirkbeck. Since 2008 they have passionately (and often awkwardly) been discussing 'cryptids' and monsters like Yeti, Chupacabra, Bigfoot and Nessie - as well as weird news of the world, UFO's, time travelers, robots and space stuff. Though they take these pseudosciences as seriously as they can, they struggle to take themselves seriously at all. Rachel House might be just shy of a household name, but is definitely one of our most acclaimed and accomplished actresses, with key roles on what amounts to a role call of New Zealand's greatest films: Whale Rider, Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Cousins and more. She's just directed her debut feature in The Mountain, and joins Duncan Greive on The Fold at the very end of a lengthy promotional tour for a very funny and very exhausted conversation about the experience. Laughter is not usually something associated with the 1981 Springbok Tour but a new film manages to inject some lighter moments into a seminal period in Kiwi history. Uproar is a coming-of-age film starring Hunt for the Wilderpeople's Julian Dennison as 17-year-old Josh Waaka. As a Maori kid in Dunedin in the '80s, he's treated as an outsider at his school until his talent as an actor is discovered by his drama teacher - played by Rhys Darby. He's introduced to a young Maori woman, Samantha , played by Erana James - who helps get him involved in the anti-Tour movement. Uproar had its debut at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month and is out in cinemas now. Julian and Erana speak to Kathryn about what it was like to go back in time for this film - and how its themes are still relevant today.
Julian Dennison and James Rolleston are familiar faces to fans of kiwi films. The pair started acting young, starring in Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy, respectively. The award-winning actors returned to New Zealand screens October 5th with the highly anticipated local feature film Uproar, a story about connection and finding your place in the world, set during the Springbok protests of 1981. Dennison plays the protagonist of the film, Josh Waaka, while Rolleston plays his older brother Jamie. “Jamie and Josh are both Māori and go to a very Pākehā school,” Dennison told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame. “So, it's about Josh finding his Māoridom, also finding himself.” While the outdated fashion might be the first difference viewers notice, it's not the only part of the film that kiwis might find unfamiliar. “It was hectic,” Rolleston told Tame. “The things that were happening back then, around the Springbok tour.” “Before the film, I just knew that there were some marches that didn't go too well, that kind of thing. I wasn't too clued up about it.” “They don't really teach you at school,” Dennison agreed. In terms of the characters themselves, Dennison found himself acting from experience. “I felt like I could relate to him a bit,” he told Tame. “Going to an all-boys school that was predominantly European.” “That thing of being too brown for school, but also being too white for some cliques outside of school.” The film is a journey of self-discovery for Josh, not only finding himself beyond where he fits in school, but also within his family and culture. Both actors are hoping that this film will be an inspiration for people to find those cultural connections, to connect with their Māoridom in a way they hadn't previously. “I hope people walk out of there going, “Yeah I'm going to start the journey.”” “You see the Māori ways come up in the film,” Rolleston said. “Which is good for people to see, especially our young people.” “I feel like this film is going to bring up some good conversations,” Dennison told Tame. “I think this movie will, you know, cultivate people to talk about this stuff.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Here we are again, at the end of another season! It always comes around too fast. This week, we read chapters 84-epilogue of Any Way The Wind Blows through the theme of love and wrap up our time with this book. It's the perfect theme to end our journey with this wonderful series! In this section, Lady Ruth and Jamie invite Simon and Baz over for a celebration lunch where Simon commits a sword faux pas... or does he? Turns out Simon's picked up the family Excalibur, which can only be moved by a Salisbury, which means that Simon Snow is Lucy's lost child. Finally, a resolution! This week we travel to beautiful New Zealand (through the magic of film, of course) as we FINALLY watch Taika Waititi's “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.”We also talk about movie recommendations from others, Karl's open invitation to a New Zealand chicken farm, the loss of PeeWee Herman, and our differences of opinion on celebrity death in general.
Have you ever been disqualified because you're a female? Or maybe because you're not married? Do you wrestle with what God intended when He designed woman? Do we have different roles than men? Nina lives in the Middle East, but whether you live in Midwest America or find yourself in a Muslim context, you've probably come into contact with a male-centric or marriage-focused culture. Nina & I had a hilarious and encouraging conversation about: - how God moves through single women, not just men or married people - how to not internalize messages about being less than - how you can prevent yourself from becoming bitter towards men - what men can practically do to support the women in their lives Resources: The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Dr. Beth Allison Barr - https://bethallisonbarr.com/books/the-making-of-biblical-womanhood/ Hunt for the Wilderpeople - https://www.netflix.com/title/80096995 Summer 2023 playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05R9lmKit27denOSOi26wq Summer worship 2023 playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1AGzVnXzivDFsxk3bA7kzV Leave a Review: https://www.podpage.com/head-to-heart/reviews/new/ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/headtoheart_podcast/ Website: https://www.podpage.com/head-to-heart/ FREE JOURNALING PROMPTS TO CULTIVATE CONTENTMENT: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/644afe08a15cc2e3944db516
We watched What We do in the Shadows and were treated to the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/3uBc1Dk0hwI Synopsis You might not know it, but the life (or death) of a vampire is a lot less romantic and sometimes much more petty and small than you might think. Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are old vampires trying to make it in a new world. Making it the same way you or I are trying to make it, really. Just trying to make ends meet while accomplishing something akin to a nightlife. While they manage the chore wheel and keeping their familiars in check, they manage to get caught up in the wacky hijinks of other somewhat mundane horrors that roam the night. Everyone gets more laughs than they bargained for. Review What We do in the Shadows is a mockumentary by notable New Zealanders Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords)and Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople). It's fun, tight, and hilarious. It's shot the way a normal documentary might be, but because the setting for much of the movie is in a vampire's lair it has a spooky ambiance. Apart from some funny jumpscares, there is nothing scary about this horror adjacent romp. What We do in the Shadows is just for fun and it's great at it. So much of this had me rolling around the room, shaking my wife about how this is the best thing I've seen since Shaun of the Dead. Watch What We do in the ShadowsBuy or Rent on AmazonClick Here to Watch Comedy isn't easy, and comedy horror can feel pretty clunky sometimes, but this is sleek and fun. It smacks deeply of the comedy from a show that I miss deeply, Flight of the Conchords. What We do in the Shadows pays close attention to making all the characters “real people” which takes away a lot of the sexy emphasis of normal vampires and replaces it with questions like, “How shitty of a roommate would a vampire be?” Overall, this is an easy watch that is best experienced with friends and family. The R rating is only earned with comically gratuitous blood and occasional curse words. Definitely rent this one if you haven't already. Score 8/10

[School of Movies 2022] This is an exploration on the more personal, less studio-based films of Thor Ragnaraok and Love & Thunder director Taika Waititi. Most of you won't have seen all of them, and that is okay, you should listen to this episode in its entirety anyway. The show will give you more details to look for when you get to watching them. 03m: Eagle vs. Shark (2007) 25m: Boy (2010) 41m: Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) 59m: Jojo Rabbit (2019) All of them have many factors in common, but the unifying factors are parents not being around, and lonely boys going through a transformative journey. There is dark, offhand humour, spectacular immaturity, sudden unexpected pain and loss, and resolutions that are as soothingly healthy as they are oddball. Altogether, Waititi is one of the most riveting directors of our time, and it brings us a lot of joy to study his repeating themes along with you.
