Welcome to Cinema A La Carte: The Podcast. Part of the Dark Discussions Network. With one of the worst titles in movie history, BABY DRIVER (2017) was released world wide. With such a title many folks thought it was a comedy or a family film and as a result the target audience may have ignored it during its theatrical release (including one of your podcast co-hosts). The film, directed by Edgar Wright, received positive reviews and still was able to make a large profit at the box office on top of its meager film budget. Baby (Ansel Elgort) has been forced to work for a local crime boss since he was sixteen to pay back for doing a car jacking. Now he is a driver for various robberies. When he meets Debora (Lily James) at a local diner, his life seems to finally be moving to a new phase of respectability. Unfortunately for him, the crime boss may not let him out of his debt. Besides the nominal leads of Ansel Elgort and Lily James, the film has a cast of big names including Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Eiza González. Somewhat a cult classic after it was able to be viewed at home, your co-hosts take a look at this very interesting and pulpy film. The fat lady is about to sing as we come to a close on our Musical Revue. We wrap up our musical marathon with a look at the 2017 action-heist film, Baby Driver. Wait, is Baby Driver a musical? You'll find out in this week's show. Also, we're joined by a very special guest host, Alexandra Bohannon—who has been doing some work on The Cinematic Schematic. Ride Along with Baby Driver With a killer soundtrack and kinetic energy, Baby Driver is at times everything you'd expect from Edgar Wright, while also being a bit different—at least on the surface. Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a getaway driver. And, he's very good. It's what landed him under the thumb of Doc (Kevin Spacey), who is something of a local crime lord. Doc uses Baby for all of his jobs while switching out the crew—namely a rotation of Buddy (Hamm), Bats (Foxx) and Darling (Eiza González). Baby soon learns that eventually, blood will be on his hands. So, is Baby Driver a musical? This is the big question we tackle this week. We also discuss ragtag families, formalism and Edgar Wright's overarching thematic touchstones. But, that's not all. After our reviews, we drop our Top 3 Killer Tracks. It seemed fitting. Edgar Wright's Baby Driver kept us on the edge of our seats with its tale of a high stakes getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort), and his struggle to get out of the business he's been locked into. The story may have gotten our heart pumping, but the added element of sound that courses throughout the film is what truly makes the Academy Award nominated film so spectacular. In this special episode of Hype Podcast, our co-host Pamela Gocobachi sits down with 2018 Oscar nominee Julian Slater ahead of Sunday night's awards to discuss how he went about creating the journey of sound that's featured in Edgar Wright's unique film. Julian Slater, who served as the film's sound designer/supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer, scooped up two of Baby Driver's three nominations this year, including a solo nod for Best Achievement in Sound Editing, and one for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing alongside Tim Cavagin and Mary H. Ellis.

Director Edgar Wright goes full on style over substance in his latest getaway driver centered film, Baby Driver. Centered around Baby (Ansel Elgort), a wheelman for Doc (Kevin Spacey) who is a criminal kingpin of sorts. Working to pay off a debt to Doc, Baby works with some shady characters and looks good while doing it. A film that is driven by its soundtrack and audio design is a unique entry into the Edgar Wright's collection of films. While the style is a large part of the premise here, does Wright and the cast deliver a solid story that leads you wanting more? Check out the review to find out.
