Washington state Democrats have passed a new 9.9 percent income tax on millionaires, the first income tax in the state's history. The measure now heads to the governor's desk and represents a major shift in a state long known for its lack of personal income taxes. But the policy debate is already colliding with economic reality. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has announced he is relocating to Florida, a state with no income tax. That move underscores a longstanding pattern in American economics: high earners often respond to aggressive tax policies by moving to lower-tax jurisdictions. If more states pursue similar policies, the migration of wealthy taxpayers to places like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee could accelerate. The broader question is what happens if that migration significantly shrinks the tax base in high-spending states. European countries experimented with wealth taxes for years before many rolled them back after wealthy residents simply moved elsewhere. Washington may now be testing whether the same dynamic will play out inside the United States.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Filibuster Fight and the SAVE ActMeanwhile, a new institutional battle is brewing in the Senate. Senator Ron Johnson is pushing for a vote to begin debate on ending the legislative filibuster, at least in its current form. The immediate catalyst is the House-passed SAVE America Act, which focuses on citizenship-based voter registration and voting ID requirements.Republicans do not currently have the 60 votes needed to pass the legislation under existing Senate rules. That reality has revived calls to weaken the filibuster by shifting to a “talking filibuster,” forcing senators who want to block legislation to continuously hold the floor rather than simply signaling opposition.Institutionalists in both parties warn that such a move could be the beginning of the end for the Senate's 60-vote threshold entirely. Supporters argue the change is inevitable anyway and that the current rules simply prevent major legislation from passing. Either way, the vote could force senators to go on record about how much they value the chamber's traditional rules.Jim Clyburn and the Persistence of IncumbencyFinally, South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn has announced that he plans to seek reelection at age 85. First elected in 1992, Clyburn remains one of the most influential figures in Democratic politics and a central leader within the Congressional Black Caucus. His decision highlights the enduring power of incumbency in American politics. While voters and activists often debate generational change, long-serving lawmakers frequently retain strong political machines and local loyalty that discourage serious primary challenges. For now, there is little sign that anyone in Clyburn's district is preparing to challenge him.Taken together, these developments offer a snapshot of the current political landscape: states experimenting with new tax policies, the Senate wrestling with its own rules of power, and long-time incumbents continuing to dominate the institutions they helped shape.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro on Iran and Elections00:08:47 - Iran Breakdown with Ryan McBeth01:07:54 - Update01:08:14 - Washington State Tax01:09:53 - Filibuster01:13:30 - Jim Clyburn01:14:37 - Oscar-Nominated Movie Talk with Jada Yuan02:38:28 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. What Do the 2026 Oscars Have to Say About Religion?

2025 was a big year for film. Theaters drew people in for a wide variety of stories. Moviegoers saw thrillers like Paul Thomas Anderson's “One Battle After Another” and Josh Safdie's “Marty Supreme.” They saw the returns of beloved characters with James Gunn's “Superman” and James Cameron's “Avatar: Fire & Ash.” They embraced the strange with “Bugonia,” the romantic with “Materialists” and the tragic with “Frankenstein.”But, as has been increasingly the case in recent years, droves of moviegoers also showed up to films with heavily religious themes.Faith based studios and directors produced a variety of faith-forward movies with family-friendly animated movies like “David“ or “Light of The World” and more mature films such as “Guns and Moses” or “The Last Rodeo. But faith also appeared in many religiously unaffiliated Hollywood films, such as the latest installment of the “Knives Out” franchise which focused on the murder of a controversial catholic priest and Ryan Coogler's “Sinners,” which explored the clashes of spirituality and conventional religion. As the Oscars are fast approaching this weekend, Religion Unplugged's Culture Editor Jillian Cheney and Film Critic Joseph Holmes sat down with public intellectual and theologian Paul Anleitner. Paul is the President and CEO of Goodmakers, and the author of “Based on a True Story: Vibe Shifts, the End of Deconstruction, & the Reboot of Meaning,” which comes out this summer and is available for pre-order now. Jillian, Joseph and Paul talk through the spiritual and religious themes of some of this years' most beloved Oscar Nominees including “Sinners,” “Train Dreams,” “One Battle After Another” and “F1.”#oscars #goodmakers #podcast #paulanleitner #traindreams #sinners #f1 #onebattleafteranother

Our Oscars Run continues this week on We Drink & We Watch Things with the most over-caffeinated and divisive contender in the race: Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme. This isn't just a sports movie; it's a chaotic, 1950s-set "ping-pong nightmare" that plays like a heist film where the only thing being stolen is glory. Pour yourself our cocktail of the week - The Hydrator - because this movie doesn't let you breathe for its entire 149-minute runtime. This week, we talk through Timothée Chalamet's electric, polarizing performance as Marty Mauser, a spindly, obsessive table tennis hustler who treats every match like a life-or-death battle for his own soul. We examine the film's unique, frantic energy - reminiscent of Uncut Gems - and analyze Gwyneth Paltrow's stylish return to the screen as the glamorous, world-weary Kay Stone. We also highlight the incredible supporting work of Odessa A'zion, who brings some much-needed humanity to the chaos as the woman Marty leaves in his wake. It's a discussion about the toxic drive for the American Dream, the absurdity of professional ping-pong, and whether Chalamet's "anti-hero" swagger is enough to finally nab him that Best Actor statue. If you're tracking the Oscar race with Mackenzie or just want to hear us debate whether a movie about a "sociopathic screwball" can actually win Best Picture, this is the episode for you. In his official statement, Davidson thanked the public for their support and said he’s spent his life teaching “empathy, kindness, and understanding from others, and I will continue to do so.” But what he didn’t say was “I’m sorry” or even acknowledge the names of Jordan and Lindo - to apologize for the painful humiliation they endured at his outburst. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Jessica Steinberg speaking with Oscar film nominee Meyer Levinson-Blount. “Butcher’s Stain" is nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2026 Oscars, after winning second place in the narrative category of the Student Academy Awards in the fall. The film follows Samir, an Arab butcher in Tel Aviv, who sets out on a journey to prove his innocence after he’s accused of removing posters of the hostages kidnapped to Gaza. Levinson-Blount discusses his own background as the inspiration for the making of the film during his studies at Tel Aviv Film School, which he describes as a "paradise," particularly during the two years of war. He talks about the themes of the film -- which draws on Levinson-Blount's own experiences working in Israeli supermarkets -- and revolves around a general thread of suspicion regarding the Arab community in Israel. The debut director also discusses how the film's story builds suspicion, then breaks that expectation, showing that people tend not to know that much about one another. Oscars Month takes a vibrant, neon-soaked turn this week on We Drink & We Watch Things as we dive into the year's most unexpected Academy darling: the animated powerhouse KPop Demon Hunters. It's not every year that a high-octane, genre-bending musical makes it into the Best Picture conversation, but this film has danced its way into the hearts of critics and audiences alike. Grab our Darkness & Harmony cocktail - extra points if it has sparkles - and get ready for an episode that is as high-energy as a sold-out stadium tour. This week, we admire the stunning, boundary-pushing animation style that blends hyper-kinetic action with the sleek aesthetic of the music industry. We talk about the infectious, chart-topping original songs that have made this a frontrunner for Best Original Song, and how the film manages to balance its flashy demon-slaying sequences with a surprisingly grounded story about sisterhood and the pressures of fame. We also weigh the odds of its Oscar success, discussing whether the Academy is finally ready to reward a film that feels so unapologetically modern and fun.Whether you're following Mackenzie's Oscar tracker or just want to hear us rave about the coolest animated film in years, this is the episode for you. We're blending our excitement for the film's creativity with our usual casual banter, proving that even a quest for the golden statue can have a killer beat. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. Oscars Month marches forward on We Drink & We Watch Things as we tackle the provocative and high-stakes contender that has everyone talking: Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling political odyssey, One Battle After Another. Far from a traditional war movie, this is a stylish, kinetic look at an underground network of anti-fascist revolutionaries navigating a modern America on the brink. Pour yourself something strong and steady - you're going to need it to keep up with the frantic energy of The French 75.This week, we examine the film's portrayal of resistance, following Leonardo DiCaprio's "Bob" as a former munitions expert forced out of a stoner haze to protect his daughter from a shadow-government cabal. We talk through PTA's decision to blend Thomas Pynchon's psychedelic paranoia with very real contemporary anxieties, specifically focusing on the "Latino Harriet Tubman" operation led by Benicio Del Toro's serene sensei. We also analyze Sean Penn's unsettling turn as the obsessive Colonel Lockjaw and the film's central question: in a world of pervasive surveillance and escalating extremism, is organized rebellion a noble necessity or a cycle of "one battle after another?" If you're keeping up with Mackenzie's Oscar ballot or just love a film that feels like a fever dream of the evening news, this episode is an absolute must-watch.
