This week we are looking at the psychology behind why a person would confess to a crime that they never committed. We discuss the categories of false confessions including voluntary, persuaded or internalized, and compliant false confessions. We also discuss examples of cases where someone has falsely confessed including the JonBenet Ramsey case, the murder of Hartmut Hagan, the Satanic abuse case against Paul Igram, the West Memphis 3 case and the Central Park 5. Why do innocent people confess to crimes they didn't commit? But is it possible that Brendan Dassey isn't guilty as we were all led to believe? (Is Brendan Dassey Innocent?) *** After a night of bar-hopping, Ozzy Conde and girlfriend Kimberly Long got into an argument that ended up with Ozzy laying on the floor – dead. Kimberly was sent to prison. At least that's the story the prosectors told. But Kimberly fought for years to try and convince people she was not a murderer. But was she? (Kimberly's Long Struggle to Prove Her Innocence) *** The idea of someone breaking down and confessing to police that they committed a crime – when in actuality they did not do it – seems ludicrous to us. But it happens all the time. Why on earth would someone ever do such a thing? We'll look a bit closer at how it happens. Sarah speaks to the foundation's chief executive Sarah Edmonds.
Among the many war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine are large-scale efforts to deport Ukrainian children to Russia. Thousands of children have already been taken to Russian camps and facilities, leading the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for two senior Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, in March 2023. Despite the arrest warrants, the deportations have continued. A new report from the Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab identified 314 individual Ukrainian children that Russian officials transferred from Ukraine to Russia for coerced adoption and fostering, acts that likely constitute grave violations of international law. What are the report's key findings? And how might they contribute to efforts toward accountability, including potential new criminal charges against Russian officials? Joining the show to discuss the report are Oona Hathaway and Nathaniel Raymond. Oona is a Professor at Yale Law School and an Executive Editor at Just Security. Nathaniel is the Executive Director of the Humanitarian Research Lab and a Lecturer in the Department of the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health. Episode Summary: In this thought provoking episode, host Joseph Arvidson sits down with Dr. Jerrod Brown to explore the complex factors contributing to false confessions and wrongful convictions. Dr. Brown, an expert in neurocriminology, offers insights into how various mental and physical health factors-such as untreated nutritional deficiencies and cognitive impairments-impact behavior, decision making, and the reliability of client interviews. Together, Joseph and Dr. Brown unpack the vulnerabilities that can make certain individuals more susceptible to false confessions, from neurodevelopmental disorders and high levels of suggestibility to external pressures in the interview room. This episode challenges justice professionals to broaden their perspectives, looking beyond traditional frameworks like risk-needs-responsivity, to embrace a holistic view of client behavior. With practical implications for probation officers, correctional staff, and all who interact with justice-involved individuals, Dr. Brown's insights offer a pathway toward more effective, informed, and compassionate practices in the field. What You'll Learn: The types and causes of false confessions: Voluntary, Coerced, and Internalized. How cognitive impairments, neurodevelopmental disorders, and high suggestibility influence client statements and behaviors. The impact of nutritional deficiencies and physical health on mental well being and behavior in justice contexts. Practical strategies to improve client interactions, including accommodating neurodevelopmental needs and promoting a sensory friendly environment. Why a broader, interdisciplinary approach to justice work is essential for improving outcomes. Text Hannah!I want to start out by saying I'm NOT anti-c-section. I'm not against scheduling repeat c-sections simply because YOU want to. What I'm against is unnecessary c-sections. Coerced or pressured c-sections. C-sections chosen without full informed consent.I've heard many women say that want to have some control over their birth the second time around so they are scheduling a repeat c-section. But is that really what puts you in control? In this episode, I share some misconceptions about scheduling a repeat c-section vs. having a VBAC.I also talk about where the true control comes from during your pregnancy and birth.Tune in for some tangible empowerment that will help you work through fear and doubt so you can feel ready for your birth, whether that be a VBAC or a repeat c-section.Pre-Sale is Open! Of course, For a teenaged girl, however This sort of obsession was somewhat normal Somewhat. I had always wanted to star in movies— So much so that I began to write them. I was about 7, maybe 8 when the stories in my headed started to form as narratives— Not just stories, but words Characters and conversations— Plots. I should leave this poor Fallon boy alone. Some darkness inside of me wants him; That thing that doesn't quiet, nor does it want, Anything but what it wants— And it is, Darkness-m— That thing that lives inside of me and what is does; The thing it calls love, and calls our for The something in someone that rises it up From wherever it dwells, Deep in my soul, and into my hear, Into my thoughts, It haunts all that I must and mustn't Ponder upon A woman's cause, And a murderer of sorts, The ugly swan , who dances on ponds, Laying one one, but all of precious stones, The egg, The coveted stones of trust, And wander, Listing upon that which it feeds, Not only the bod, But its motor, It's mind, A hearty philosopher, And willful warrior, Of wit, And of talent, The strength of Astonishment A power above all, A blindness of fate; Judged by all The spectacular amongst us The famed and the damned, Acquitted of warmth and dutiful, Exquisite in awe A rarity. —The Fame Files. V.O. Coming to terms with one's death is always peaceful. All harm caused will be returned by he/she who causes it or acts in such a way as to inflict pain and hostility towards peaceful persons. Causing with intention psychological, physical, mental, or physical harm will result in the immediate karmic retaliation of such pain as inflicted on peaceful individuals; these acts of war will inhibit the actor from entering the transcendence, or developing expanded consciousness, gaining wealth, further material possessions–his own will is therefore weakened, and therefore unworthy of love himself, by the intent to cause one such pain as an act of violence or ill will. One's disruption of peace is thereby an act of cruelty, punishable beyond death–causing pain by intention to another individual in the attempt of control or manipulation, intrusion, and abuse is therefore against the laws by which the ascended abide by, and therefore cannot and will not exist beyond the ill fate of its perpetrator. Please leave me alone; I'm asking you nicely. Alright, fine. Where is it! Where is what? You know what. What? From the fountain. It wasn't me! I don't have it. And this, is why Jimmy Fallon is impenetrable. {Enter The Multiverse} [The Festival Project.™] COPYRIGHT © THE FESTIVAL PROJECT 2019-2024 | THE COMPLEX COLLECTIVE. © ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. © -Ū.

Your host is singer, songwriter, speaker, and domestic violence advocate, Diana Winkler. She is passionate about helping survivors in the church heal from domestic violence and abuse and trauma. This podcast is not a substitute for professional counseling or qualified medical help. [00:00:26] Now, here is Diana. [00:00:33] Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. How are you doing today? It has been a crazy week. It is very hot here right now. We Phoenicians like to talk about the weather and how horrible it is in the summer. So right now we're in our tropical storm season. [00:00:55] It's 110 here, but we have now humidity [00:01:00] about 38%, I'd say. So for us, that's very sticky and very hot. I was out in the garden at 6am doing my chores. I stopped at 8. 30 because I was getting nauseous and dizzy, uh, that is the first stage of heat exhaustion. So, I stopped my chores today. Uh, and it will 120 degrees every summer it does. [00:01:28] That's, that's normal for us, and why do we live here and put up with that heat? Well, because the rest of the year, it's gorgeous. It's, it's 75 degrees during the winter. And so that's what we live for.

But I've hung my head in shame, Cause I hung myself with gratitude, Haven't you had enough? If it makes any difference at all, And I'm betting it does All I wished for a wanted and prayed Was for you to be happy I buy burners with trackers Put burn holes in sweaters The summit at the plummet, pulling forwards And backwards I've four words for parlors, For barbers and hatchets I bury the four suns, The moon arose after I left an Oscar on your alter this morning Never shall ye rest, Haven't ever then, Paid the tythe, And for the while, Immortal wife and lover, Mother daughter, Soon to call your name and number, However, The fall from the drop of polish, Of course, oil marks upon canvases Sickness and swells of my Hands upon your corset Could you collide with another? Doubtful, to that, So shall it must be List, but never to utter A mustard seed; Ground, then unground— As if planted, Simple, As the seed of laughter So then, would you By the turn of the hour, return to the one had you called Lover, A curse upon the Coerced and responsible A blonde, But worse, A pretty one For never after happens out of nowhere Now, Dissociate, Before I dissipate of Loneliness Hark, The door opens for one, A bold soldier to come, Listen lover, The stone has been Suspended, by the mirror In terror Alarmed, Cool you are now Calm, however Not abound to be lie Or below Bound by blood There you are In excelsior, Predecessor What would you want that for— The camera obscured; Why, If only, To look upon you Plastered and enlarged As you are Endangered in my imagination A dangerous and strange, Dangling addiction Fascination, now With power, And prowess Come now, The midnight hour is upon us [his body hung from the rafters above the studio, just one lamp left aglow—and then suddenly I had awakened, his body still and resting, sleeping quietly—although the hanged man burned into my mind; I left him quietly as I could in the loft and sat with nothing in my mind at all at the canvas, brush in hand, as if I were to draw something—but could not. It was almost as if I was frozen, or even perhaps the canvas were instead a mirror, and I the painting —though I could not know. My dearest Patrick was a broken man, and I his broken lover—the both of us an atrocity at all in shambles—I wept inwardly but not outward, as not to wake him as my tears often did, even from a deep sleep. The sun was far from rising, and though I had barely slept at all, I felt I would never sleep again—I fell at my tilted alter as the sun rose, in prayer and devastation; What had I done?] —Esha's Memoirs, the journals from The Altar You know what, kid— You've got something. I don't know what it is, But it's something. Kid? Aren't we like, the same age? No. I'll tell you what I've got I've got a seven year old kid I haven't seen in two years; I've got a sink full of dishes I've got credit card debt and school loans I've got racist neighbors, An ex husband who swears he never hit me With a brand new baby I've got Extreme back pain I've got a body only God could ever love And I've got something like 10,000 pages or more Of stuff I barely remember writing Just sitting in the Google algorithm Pushing me closer and closer to suicide Every single day I've got Sexual fantasies about celebrities for no given reason at all. I've got 800 songs that are just words I've got books I want to read just— sitting there And I've got this pain That just sits inside my soul That never goes away, ever I've got something, alright. I've got something, sure But when it comes to money I got a dollar One fucking dollar And you know what I call that? -Useless. She's dead, isn't she? You guessed it. Well, what am I supposed to do? What you always do. What is that? What is that? Swear of the palm d ore I Cannes, Atop the Eiffel You are the river that crosses my eye, The scar across my heart, The Eye, is All we are And all is one; One is all, And All are One Well, I'm quite nervous. Don't be nervous, at all, Johnny. Relax. Another John—my first, in fact. Indeed, I was once relentlessly obsessed With Johnny Depp Infatuated, if you will Whatever you want to call it. © -Ū.

The secretive Catholic organisation Opus Dei is under scrutiny, after the Financial Times reported that girls had been coerced into decades of gruelling service in the order. Women from Britain and Ireland told the newspaper they were groomed to sign up as so-called assistant numeraries, which in reality meant working as domestic servants without pay or holidays. The journalist who wrote the story is Antonia Cundy who says that the women were recruited when they started training at hospitality schools as 15- and 16-year-olds. Cundy spoke to Corin Dann.

In a heartbreaking case of manipulation and abuse, Paul Ferguson was sentenced to 30-100 years in prison for his role in the torture and death of his own autistic brother. Coerced by his monstrous mother, Shanda Ark, Paul became an instrument of cruelty. But did the court fully understand the depths of psychological damage that warped Paul into this tragic figure? If he didn't inflict the abuse himself, does he share equal responsibility? Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to dissect this controversial ruling. They'll delve into the disturbing questions surrounding the case: Damaged Pawn: Could Paul's autism and traumatic upbringing mitigate his culpability? Was he merely acting out his own abuse under his mother's sinister control? Sentencing Controversy: Was the judge's heavy-handed sentence justified? Did it balance justice for the victim with acknowledging Paul's complex psychological landscape? Psychological Horror: What do the revelations about Paul's alleged joy in inflicting pain tell us about the permanent scars of his manipulative upbringing? Rehabilitation vs. Protection: Is a decades-long prison term meant to punish Paul or protect society from a potentially dangerous individual damaged beyond repair? Road to Recovery? Does Paul Ferguson have any chance for release and rehabilitation in his lifetime? What might his legal options be? Join us for a chilling examination of the boundaries between victim and perpetrator, where mental illness, familial abuse, and the pursuit of justice collide in a profoundly unsettling story. Many people don't know that the police are permitted to outright lie about evidence to someone they bring into the station for questioning. They are even permitted to lie to minors. If you think only guilty people confess to crimes, think again. Innocent people are often convicted after they provide police with a false confession. What could possibly motivate an innocent person to confess to a crime they didn't commit? Dr. Phil speaks with Attorney Laura Nirider, co-director of the Center on Wrongful Conviction and co-host of the Wrongful Conviction: False Confessions podcast; Dave Thompson, expert in interrogation training and certified forensic interviewer analyzes how minors can easily be coerced into a false confession, how to protect your child and their unexpected collaboration. "It's not every day that a defense attorney comes along and becomes a close colleague of somebody who is dedicated to training law enforcement. I like to think of our evolution here as a way to build bridges and come together around some really important issues-- wrongful convictions," Nirider says. Learn about Nirider and Thompson's approach to representing youth, solving cases and protecting public safety. New episodes drop Tuesdays.
