This week, we discuss two films from the Wachowski siblings. The first is Cloud Atlas (2012), an epic science fiction film which weaves together six interconnected stories across time and space, exploring how individual actions ripple through history to shape destinies. The second is Bound (1996), a neo-noir erotic crime thriller where two women plot to steal from the mob, igniting a tense game of deception, passion and survival. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2015 Netflix series Sense8 for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Sense8 is an incredibly queer show that we honestly cannot believe first premiered a whole entire decade ago. It truly ranks up there next to Orphan Black for us as one of the most impressive shows ever to exist on television. Although we really wish it had gotten more seasons, what we did get was an absolute masterpiece. Sense8 was nominated for GLAAD media awards in 2016, 2018 and 2019 for its queer representation and if you did not get a chance to watch it back then, we really cannot recommend enough that you watch it right now. Like for real, why are you reading this? Go watch Sense8 first and then listen to the episode, because this is full of spoilers from here on. As you might recall from our episodes on The Matrix and Bound, we are big fans of the Wachowski sisters' work. Sense8 is no exception. In fact, Lana Wachowski has said that much of Nomi's storyline was autobiographical in nature. In terms of lesbian couples in media, it doesn't get much more top tier than Nomi and Amanita. Honestly, they might still be at the top even now. We love that Amanita is so ride or die for Nomi; and in context of it being 2015 at the time, the scenes where she defends Nomi against her terfy friends hit even harder. But, as much as we are all in on Nomi and Amanita, they are not the only queer rep in this show. In fact, we'd argue that every single person in the cluster is queer simply by nature of being a sense8. By having this diverse group of people all across the globe suddenly psychically linked, the Wachowskis make a statement about the nature of sexuality, the value of shared experiences in relation to developing empathy, and what it means to be a “we” in all senses of the word. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Sense8, titled “Sum of Our Parts”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. Jennifer spills the beans on what it takes to be an actress in Hollywood. Jonny and Heather record the episode on Columb--er, Indigenous People's Day, and have some things to say about the costs of colonialism and the importance of Two Spirit/Q-Spirit. The review some events last week, one a planned pesentation on the queer history of the region and the other a grassroots protest for an anti-trans speaker brought to speak in Carbodale on National Coming Out Day. They then switch to some TERF-y women causing additional problems for queer and trans folks with their loose connection to history, science, and reality. They end with excitement for new films in the works by the Wachowski sisters celebrating trans horror, as well as other films available for streaming that avoid the Bury Your Gays trope.

This month for our movie night, Captain Ingle and I go back in time to the year 1999 and the release of one of the most important science fiction films in recent history. Questions regarding the truth of our reality have been asked since the dawn of our species, and the Wachowski's modern classic "The Matrix" presents these thoughts in a truly profound and extremely influential way. In fact, the concepts presented in this film still resonate with us a quarter of a century later. Join us, along with special guest Aaron Dye, as we go boldly!
Put on your black latex and take that red pill, because we're bending reality and running from Agents in The Wachowski's 1999 masterpiece THE MATRIX! In this episode, Masie & Stuart return to the realm of space operas with the Wachowski sisters' sci-fi blockbuster film Jupiter Ascending. A critical and finacial failure upon release, the reputation of this movie is often quite negative in online film circles. However, our hosts are here to argue that it might have some compelling ideas... some 90's shojo isekai ideas in fact. Listen as our hosts try to argue in favor of this film's charming, feminine, anime-esque version of a power fantasy, and why maybe the script probably could've used a couple more drafts. This week, we don't step behind the mic to be an audio driver... we do it because we're driven, as we go under the hood with the Wachowski sisters' much-maligned avant garde anticapitalist art film (for kids!), the 2008 anime adaptation Speed Racer, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and starring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benno Fürmann and Richard Roundtree. Turned loose on kid-friendly fare after R-rated successes, the Wachowskis served up a visionary piece of art about what it means to be an artist, and the struggle to create under capitalism. A box office flop upon its release, it's gained a cult following in the years since, and count Justin as a Day 1 believer as he saw it twice in IMAX and all of its technicolor splendor has likely been imprinted on his eyelids ever since. It's a contentious pick to close out Masterpiece Month, a nomination for canon consideration so audacious that it just may test the limits of the very friendship undergirding this podcast. But fret not! Beyond hearing a nerdy boy yap about his nerdy interest for an impossibly long time, we also mark the midway point of the year by revealing our Top 5 films of 2024 thus far. If you'd like to watch Speed Racer before listening to this episode, it is sadly unavailable to stream in both the US and Canada at the time of publication. But you should see it. It's great. (Can you guess which one of us writes this stuff?) Other works discussed in this episode include Twisters, Civil War, Hit Man, Late Night with the Devil, Longlegs, Devil, Love Lies Bleeding, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Speed, Midnight Run, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Lisa Frankenstein, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest, The Matrix, V For Vendetta, Pacific Rim, Cars, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Yellowjackets, Nope, Alita: Battle Angel, and Gran Turismo, among countless others. We'll be back next week to kick off another themeless month of madness on the show, as we're following Masterpiece Month by purposefully steering the ship directly into an iceberg and watching the movie that killed Hayden Christensen's leading man career. Yes, it's another box office dud from the summer of 2008: Doug Liman's Jumper, which sadly just like Speed Racer is not currently available to stream. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We conclude our Pride Month series with a wonderful discussion between Amanda, Zach, and special guest Matt Braunsdorf as they dissect the 1996 queer film Bound. A sexy thriller and early work from the Wachowski sisters, Bound delivers all sorts of turns and surprises. He's Back x3! We've got the return of Seth, Robert, and director David DeCoteau all in one episode. In a film that Brandon thought was space related, we instead end up in a post-apocalyptic, secret alien-run arctic cadet training base, with tons and tons of shirtless dudes and boobs to go around. What are Seth's true thoughts on our season-long sponsorship? Does this movie invoke famous directors like Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, the Wachowski sisters, etc.? And how does a time-share guessing game point system work? Tune in this week to find out all this and more, but only on "The Good, The Bad, & The Movies"! P.S. The Wachowski's Speed Racer was released in 2008 to horrible reviews and an even worse box office performance. But as time has progressed, a small but vocal contingent has gone on to reappraise the film, claiming that it was misunderstood at the time of its release. On this episode "Speed Racer (2008)", you get both sides of the argument as Jason found it a groan-inducing, cheesy bore while Ryan could get enough of the flashy visuals and eye candy. Where do you fall on this debate? Feel free to send in a comment and let us know what you think, and enjoy this feisty episode of Esoterica Cinema!

On episode 224 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Cody Dericks to take a look back and review The Matrix for its 25th anniversary and give out their Top 5 1990s Action Films. As talked about a couple of times on the AwardsWatch Podcast as well as on Director Watch, 1999 is one of the greatest years for cinema, not just in the modern era but of all time. The collective batch of films released in that last year of the 20th century profoundly spoke to the times they were released, while also paving the way for the next 25 years of films and filmmakers to come. One of the most influential films from that year was The Matrix, which just celebrated its anniversary of release just a few days ago. In a wonderful conversation, Ryan, Dan, and Cody break down this one-of-a-kind sci-fi-noir- action spectacle, talking about what the films means to them and so many others, as well as it's substantial legacy that has made it stand as one of the best films of all time. In the back half of the show, in honor of speaking about The Wachowski's masterpiece, the AW team go back to their nostalgic pasts and talk about their Top 5 action movies released within the 1990s. A bountiful decade to choose from, they were able to narrow this difficult exercise down with films like Mission: Impossible, Twister, Heat, Speed, Face/Off, Saving Private Ryan, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and more were discussed. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h14m. On our next episode, we will be reviewing Dev Patel's directorial debut, Monkey Man, and talking about our favorite actor-director debut feature films. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Why is The Matrix a big deal? Find out in this rerelease in honor of the movie's 25th anniversary. Thanks to Jefferson Betmarik for making us pull 1999's The Matrix off our shelves and talk about it. This movie was directed by the Wachowski siblings, and stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss among others. Jim and I have watched this movie so much, and spent so much time talking about it over the years, so it's no surprise that we were able to easily fill 1:20 with our personal thoughts and observations. What surprised is was how many new thoughts and ideas we had from our latest watch. We had a lot of fun revisiting the movie, and I hope you get a kick out of listening. Thanks again, Jefferson! Go behind the vein-popping sophomore feature from writer/director Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding, with this special Q&A! Remember: "ONLY LOSERS QUIT," So don't skip out on this episode like most folks do leg day! The film is a quirky and queer neo-noir full of greasy mullets, guns, and girl-on-girl with brief interludes of body horror. Its sexual fluidity, spunky attitude, and cosmic edge recall the films of Gregg Araki mixed with the Wachowski's Bound, Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise, Darren Aronofsky's Requiem For A Dream, and David Lynch's Lost Highway. It's a strange cinematic cocktail of sex and violence whose mileage will vary from viewer to viewer.

Wake up. There's a glitch in the matrix. That's because we're seeing deja vu - your campaigns are starting to look the same. Need some fresh ideas? We're here for you.But in reality (what is reality anyway?) you don't have to come up with the freshest never-before-seen content. You just have to pull from all of your favorite pieces of content. Take the inspiring bits. All of them. And put them together to make something new.See, the creators of The Matrix, the Wachowski's, even said they took “every idea we've ever had in our f***ing lives” and put it into the Matrix. Based on the ideas from French philosopher Jean Baudrillard, they also pulled from the techno scene, anime, martial arts, and more. There are even references to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, these very familiar cultural symbols. And yet when The Matrix was released, it was something fresh. It received wide acclaim, won Academy Awards, and basically broke the box office, bringing in over $460 million. So in this episode, we're going down the rabbit hole of marketing lessons we can learn from the 1999 film with the help of Deel's Director of Content Marketing, Anja Simic. Together, we discuss how to pull your inspiration into your B2B marketing, create educational content that preempts audience questions about your product or service, and call out audience pain points. So put on your very dark, very tiny sunglasses for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Anja SimicAnja Simic is Director of Content Marketing at Deel. For more information, visit Deel.comAbout The MatrixThe Matrix is a sci-fi action movie about a computer programer who discovers that the world as we know it is a simulation. In this awakening, he finds out that machines have created the simulation to distract humans and are using his body as an energy source in the meantime. He bands together with other people who have been freed from The Matrix to rebel against the machines. The 1999 movie stars Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, and Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith. The Matrix was created by Lana and Lily Wachowski, known professionally as The Wachowskis. They had only written and directed one movie before - Bound, a 1996 neo-noir crime thriller. Now they're now known for V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas, and more. The Matrix was made when the Wachowskis were asked by a friend to develop an original comic book concept, which they started working on in 1992. It began with the idea that everything in our world is a simulation in a digital universe, an idea inspired by French postmodern philosopher Jean Baudrillard (1929 - 2007). Baudrillard believed that we have lost all ability to make sense of the distinction between nature and artifice. In the movie, the Wachowskis nod to Baudrillard when Neo hides his contraband software in a hollowed-out copy of "Simulacra and Simulation," a book by Baudrillard. The idea that “our reality” is a simulation allowed the Wachowskis to explore and experiment with special effects and camera tricks to make many iconic and memorable scenes, like the bending spoon and the slow-mo bullet dodging scene. The style of the movie is influenced by cyberpunk, anime, and martial arts. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Matrix:Combine all of the ideas you've ever had. That's exactly what the Wachowski's did when they developed the story of The Matrix. They pulled inspiration from the techno movement, anime, martial arts, and cyberpunk as well as the postmodern philosopher Jean Baudrillard to create something totally new, but whose references were recognizable. This made The Matrix accessible and not totally foreign while also being inspired and thought provoking. So pull in those ideas and make something totally new!Present complex products in an understandable way. Use clear visuals and straight-forward language that appeals to both the technical buyer and the layman. By speaking to both, you increase your potential customers. Anja says, “When you're talking about a product, you are trying to explain it in a way that's relatable to your potential buyer, to a prospect. So you're trying to find the words, use the visuals, use the brand, everything in your power to respond to a need. The Matrix is doing the same. So it's based on the very complex philosophy of postmodernism, but the movie presents it in a way that's very light, that is relatable.”Call out your audience's pain points. This grabs their attention and sounds like you're talking directly to them. Trinity does this when she meets with Neo in the nightclub. She says, “I know why you're here, Neo. I know what you've been doing... why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night, you sit by your computer.” Neo immediately knows that Trinity has been paying attention to him, understands what he's going through, and that it's important to her. Which is exactly how your audience will feel if you do the same.Quotes“There is some hesitancy from marketers to not want to pull in a bunch of different things that they like and put them together. But that's what makes [The Matrix] feel so cool and different. The cramming of worlds together in that way is what makes this feel so unique. So like, take a few things that you are really passionate about - content that you love - and just put it together.” - Ian Faison*“I think you need to be really flexible with [your content strategy] because the markets change, the business landscape changes the economic factors change. So what you devise as a plan for this year might not work next year because we are living in very uncertain times. We don't know how the next few years are going to look. So being lean and flexible is the right way to address any strategy, but content strategy in particular.” - Anja SimicTime Stamps[0:55] Introducing Director of Content Marketing at Deel, Anja Simic[1:50] Why are we talking about The Matrix?[4:22] Tell me more about The Matrix[8:52] What makes The Matrix remarkable?[11:11] What are some marketing lessons we can take away from The Matrix?[33:49] How does Anja think about content at Deel?[36:58] How does Anja prove the ROI of content?LinksWatch The MatrixConnect with Anja on LinkedInLearn more about DeelAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Jeremy SwiftTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jeremy Swift. You may know Jeremy from Downton Abbey, Apple TV's Ted Lasso, or the Wachowski Siblings' epic Jupiter Ascending. But you may not know that Jeremy is arguably a more talented musician, than he is an actor.Just kidding. He is superb in both endeavors! In this episode, we chat about how he came to be an actor, and some of his first roles. I mean he toured with a cabaret troupe that played shows in various prisons! Holy Moly! Of course, we discuss some of his experiences on the previously listed projects, and a couple of others. I ask him what it is like to work with his wife on set, and he spills the beans on Ted Lasso season 4!Jeremy also shares the story of why he chose to get his Sag / Aftra card, and his upcoming film: "Descendants 4: The Rise of Red". Next we get into music. Jeremy started playing music at a very early age, and we definitely dive into that aspect of his creativity. Jeremy shares stories of his punk phase, seeing The Sex Pistols live, and his thoughts on the "Oi!" movement of the late 70's. Jeremy has a new album out called "Songs of Escape and Endless Night", which is catchy as hell. We discuss a couple of the tracks from that album, and he lets me play my favorite song from it. Jeremy shares his love for David Bowie, building synthesizers with his dad, and Christo Fernandez working on Jeremy's new album.Follow Jeremy Swift everywhere.See Jeremy Swift in everything.Listen to Jeremy Swift on Spotify. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement

At the beginning of the 90s, lesbians were a punchline for a male-gaze-oriented media, an easy target for expressing the anxiety that women might not need men after all. By the middle of the decade, women-loving-women had become the heroes of a number of neo-noir crime films, but the culture at large still rejected lesbianism when not intended to arouse men. While The Matrix has widely been reappraised as a trans allegory after the transitions of its directors the Wachowski sisters, their previous feature Bound was transparently queer, but its reception was complicated by the media's perception of its makers. Bound was released just a few months after the burial of an extremely similar film called Wild Side. Barely seen on its initial release amidst studio recutting and the suicide of its director, today Wild Side plays as a heartbreaking and troubling example of what could have been for its star Anne Heche, who would soon after become one-half of the most famous lesbian couple in Hollywood – and suffer the career consequences. This week, I'm honored to have back on the show, podcast regular, loving father, survivor, advocate for the children, whistleblower, man of God, writer, original creator and rightful author of the blockbuster movie series we all know today as ‘The Matrix', one of my most beloved and requested podcast guests, my dear friend, and the only man in the world brave enough to do a public face off with Elon Musk, TOM ALTHOUSE!Tom has been on this podcast numerous times and has one of the most incredible testimonies you'll ever hear. Born into a multi-generational occult bloodline family, Tom survived and overcame all the same childhood horrors and abuses you have heard on this show from other cult survivors - and left the system altogether as an adult when he realized he was in the thick of it. Tom was born a gifted child with inherent talents of extreme empathy, acting, singing, performing, creativity, layered thinking and an incredible imagination that as an adult he later used to craft a brilliant screenplay called ‘The Immortals' that would end up being fraudulently and unlawfully ripped of by Hollywood, Steven Spielberg, and the Wachowski brothers and turned into the multi-billion dollar blockbuster masterpiece we now know today as ‘The Matrix'. And ever since, Tom has been in the fight of his life to reclaim the rights to his original screenplay. We've progressively dug deeper into Tom's personal testimony on each episode he's been on, and this episode is no exception… Tom will be revealing some brand new revelations about advancements in reclaiming ‘The Matrix' as well as sharing with us the truth about Neuralink and Elon Musk. Tom's journey to get to this point has been stranger than fiction, however if you listen to his testimony, you will see the truth shine a light in the darkness. Tom has lost and sacrificed so much to expose the blatant evil that he courageously walked away from after he realized the malicious plans set forth for him by the cult system he was born into. From having two of his beloved sons taken from him in cold blooded masonic murders to being robbed of billions of dollars unlawfully7, Tom continues to fight for his remaining son, Ayden, for all the children of the world, and for humanity. The TRUE script for ‘The Matrix', Tom says, is for ALL of us. My favorite thing about Tom is that despite all that has been taken from him, he still chooses to meet the world with love, empathy, and infectious laughter and has never fallen prey to becoming like the people who has tirelessly tried to take him down. It's people like Tom who make the world a better place and we should all want nothing more than to see this brave man get the justice he, Ayden, and his family deserve.
