Welcome to our first ever spring special! As we approach the Summer of '83, Javi, Paul and Producer Brad dive into Tony Scott's extravagantly evocative and super stylish goth-punk erotic vampire thriller THE HUNGER, starring the gobsmackingly great-looking Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon. Mod music video and commercial aesthetics collide with neo-noir cinema like never before in this creepy cool treasure trove of a time capsule set in '80s NYC where vampires are real, but very different than any you've seen before. Moviegoers on April 29, 1983, were simply not ready for it, but late night cable viewers and adventurous VHS renters soon would be. You don't want to sleep on this one, especially as we examine the film in context and contrast to other standout vampire fare such as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and SINNERS.Follow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to The Culture Garden Podcast! This week, Rachel and Kieron head back to 2006 and dive into the Denzel Washington-led thriller Déjà Vu. Ironically, the conversation kicks off with a real sense of déjà vu — both hosts recall loving this movie way more than they do now. It's not bad, just… slower than they remembered. In this episode, we explore the film's take on time travel, the emotional and historical significance of it being the first major movie filmed in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and why the writers of Déjà Vu point fingers at director Tony Scott for its unrealized potential. As always, we appreciate you for rocking with us. Goodison Park is set to become the home of Everton Women in a move that will retain the club's presence in its historic home. The men's team will play its final game at the Grand Old Lady on Sunday, ending 133 years of footballing heritage before the club moves to a new state-of-the art home on the Liverpool waterfront. Thousands of supporters will line the surrounding streets to welcome the players ahead of the game against Southampton and celebrations will continue on the pitch after the final whistle. The game will no longer mark the end of competitive football at the Goodison Road site, however, after the results of a feasibility study conducted by the club paved the way for the women's team move. In this podcast we are looking back at the Summer of 95 to talk about the Tony Scott-directed Crimson Tide. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about what makes this movie so immersive and compelling, how an intersection between performance, writing and production design may be the key to its magic and how Tony Scott flawlessly found balance between authenticity and preposterousness. We also talk about how Quentin Tarantino touched up the script and what his work added to the experience, how some actors in this movie wouldn't have passed the physical fitness test to be on a submarine and how taking a tiny dog on a military mission is just unsanitary. And of course, we also weigh in on the central conflict in the film and try to find out who was right in the end, the gung-ho captain or the by-the-book XO.Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsHead over to our website to find out more! This week, we're diving into the high-stakes, high-pressure world of Crimson Tide—the 1995 submarine thriller that pits two powerhouse performances against each other: Gene Hackman as a grizzled, old-school Navy captain, and Denzel Washington as his calm, calculated executive officer. When a rogue Russian faction threatens nuclear war, the crew of the U.S.S. Alabama receives an incomplete order that could either prevent global catastrophe—or cause it. With the clock ticking and tension rising hundreds of feet below the surface, it's a nerve-racking clash of command, ethics, and ego. Directed by Tony Scott and scored by Hans Zimmer, Crimson Tide delivers pulse-pounding suspense and powerhouse drama, all set within the claustrophobic confines of a nuclear sub. Join us as we break down the film's unforgettable moments, the behind-the-scenes power struggles, and why this thriller still holds water 30 years later. Lee and Daniel decided to go deep (well, as deep as a Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production can get), both literally and figuratively, as they tackle the epic shouty men on a submarine film, "Crimson Tide" (1995), directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as said shouty men. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz interviews Shane Black, one of Hollywood's highest-paid screenwriters, who redefined action films with witty dialogue, dark humor, and unforgettable characters. From Lethal Weapon to The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3, Shane discusses his journey from a self-described "oddball" to a filmmaking powerhouse.Pittsburgh Roots and Early Influences (02:55)Born in Pittsburgh, Black shares how his father's printing business and bookshelf of detective novels sparked his love for "tough guy literature" that would later influence his writing style.Overcoming Personal Struggles (08:00)Black candidly discusses his battles with OCD and alcoholism. He reveals how he transformed these challenges into creative strengths and encourages others to "just lean into being weird."The Psychology Behind His Characters (12:04)Black explains how his characters often represent different aspects of his own psychology. He emphasizes that truly compelling writing comes from creating characters with authentic emotional DNA that resonates with the writer's own experiences. The Creation of Lethal Weapon (15:32)Black describes Lethal Weapon as "an urban western" with Mel Gibson's character representing "a Frankenstein kept in a cage" - a Vietnam veteran reviled by society but needed when violence intrudes on everyday life.Working with Hollywood Icons (27:13)Black shares insights about working with legends like Richard Donner, Tony Scott, Joel Silver, and Robert Downey Jr.From Writer to Director (40:06)Black explains his transition to directing to have more creative control over his work. Black adds that directing allows him to move beyond returning to the blank page and into a more collaborative aspect of filmmaking.Latest Project: Play Dirty (52:01)Black discusses working with Mark Wahlberg, and adapting Donald Westlake's Parker series for Amazon, calling Westlake "the king" among mystery writers and explaining his lifelong admiration for these stories he first read at age 12.Throughout the conversation, Black offers a masterclass on screenwriting in Hollywood. Black and Kevin Goetz discover numerous personal connections, creating an unusually intimate portrait of a filmmaker who transformed Hollywood's action genre. His journey from a bookish child to acclaimed filmmaker serves as proof that leaning into one's unique perspective can lead to extraordinary creative achievements. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review or connect on social media. Zo has a met up with a Navy friend of his who happened to be a submarine officer. Zo's Navy friend was all shook up as there where a lot of things that happened on the sub that had him questioning whether or not he should resign his commission. In the conversation the young officer revealed things that happened that were probably classified top secret. The friend talked about that they almost fired nuclear missiles and almost started a nuclear war and that it was only the intervention of the very cautious XO that prevented the launch. This intervention lead to an argument between the XO and the Captain of the boat, the XO forcefully relieving the Captain of being in command of the boat, and most damning, the mutiny of the crew. Zo asked his friend if the friend sided with the XO or the Captain. The friend didn't want to say, but would only comment that the whole incident felt like the coming of . . . a Crimson Tide. 00:08:08 - Opening Credits for Crimson Tide starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington00:22:50- Favorite Parts of the 1995 film: Crimson Tide01:07:14 - Trivia from the movie Crimson Tide01:21:23 - Critics' Thoughts on Tony Scott's Crimson Tide Please leave a comment, suggestion or question on our social media: Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:Website: www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@backlookcinemaTwitter: https://twitter.com/backlookcinemaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BackLookCinemaInstagram: https://instagram.com/backlookcinemaThreads: https://www.threads.net/@backlookcinemaTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@backlookcinemaTwitch https://www.twitch.tv/backlookcinemaBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/backlookcinema.bsky.socialMastodon: https://mstdn.party/@backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com Again, thanks for listening.

Join host Scott and special guest Nathaniel Metcalfe (The JCAS Presents: Nick and Nat Control The Airwaves and The JCAS Present-Nick & Nat Consume and Obey) as they break down the 1995 action classic Bad Boys! In this episode, we dive into Michael Bay's divisive directorial style—think Tony Scott vibes with the early sparks of Bayhem—and unpack the explosive chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence that defines this 90s gem. From the era's love for bold colors to action-packed nostalgia, we cover it all. Plus, we stir the pot with our hot take: Bad Boys II might just be the weakest in the franchise (minority opinion alert!). Whether you're a Michael Bay fan or a 90s action junkie, this dissection is for you.You can listen to The JCAS Presents: Nick and Nat Control The Airwaves hereYou can listen to The JCAS Present-Nick & Nat Consume and Obey hereSend us a tweet on @90saction

Join Ian Croll, Joe Thomas & Tony Scott for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast as they discuss Everton's 1-1 with Wolves. Everton extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight matches under David Moyes tonight. They played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. Despite the two sides only being separated by one place in the table going into the contest, the result maintained the 10-point gap between the pair. It also saw the Blues go above Manchester United and West Ham United on goal difference in 14th. Jack Harrison fired Everton ahead on 33 minutes with his first goal of the season as his shot was deflected in off Matt Doherty but Marshall Munetsi restored parity for 17th-placed Wolves seven minutes later after Jarrad Branthwaite was unable to clear a ball into the box.
