Episode 667. Ken Nardi is back! This episode he talks about his brand new remix of KISS ROCK AND ROLL OVER. WOW! This release is pretty amazing! From Ken, “Basic changes are that I added a bit of grit to the bass to make it closer to Gene’s live sound, removed some of the reverb from the vocals, compressed the guitars to enhance the distortion a little and added a few accents drum accents and cymbals to some songs to make them more dynamic and more like the way Peter played them live. All-in-all, it’s probably as close to a real remix as possible without access to the actual multitrack tapes. This album was a return to form after the more “experimental” DESTROYER album and represents KISS just after gaining super-star status. Some fans find certain arrangements to be a little “rushed” not unlive DRESSED TO KILL, which makes sense considering the pace and frequency the band were releasing new material at that time. I have used some “artistic freedom” to replace the fade-outs on almost every song with hard endings or extended fades to let everyone hear all of the improvised playing and singing that was hidden in those fades. All of these changes come at the end of the songs, so hopefully it will not take away from the main song arrangements. There are a few more easter eggs as well like Paul’s “Take Me” count-in from the demo, Gene’s backing vocals from the “Baby Driver” demo, Paul’s live backing vocals on “Hard Luck Woman”, a bit of Paul’s electric guitar blended in on “I Want You” along with the extended riff before the solo and more. The biggest changes are to the song “See You In Your Dreams”. Gene has always said this song didn’t really turn out how he had imagined it and even re-recorded it for his solo album less than 2 years later. For this version I have combined elements of both along with some added hand claps and percussion to give it more of a “gospel revival” feel which I think maybe gene was going for on his solo album. I have also incorporated the intro from his solo album version and used his solo album vocals to extend the 2nd verse and some other changes Gene made for that recording. If this doesn’t suit your taste, I have also included the original arrangement as a bonus track.” Three Sides of the Coin has moved to its own YouTube Channel, don't miss any future episodes click the link below and click SUBSCRIBE… so easy! It's Manny's birthday, and he has officially hijacked the host mic. Nick attempts a suspiciously “laid-back” vibe that convinces no one, Elise gets drafted as the ringmaster by default, and Anthony provides steady resistance in the form of skepticism, legal concerns, and the occasional reminder that he is, in fact, a law-abiding citizen. The energy is celebratory, but the guardrails are gone. This week we break down why Edgar Wright's 2017 action-musical Baby Driver still presses every one of Manny's birthday-boy buttons. If you do not personally own a Subaru by the end of the opening chase, we have questions about your judgment. Also, your failure to synchronize your windshield wipers to your Spotify playlist has us questioning your commitment. Real cars, real stunts, real driving, and a director who appears to believe that timing matters more than explosions combine to flip a very specific switch in Manny's brain. We also grapple with the slightly uncomfortable experience of hearing Kevin Spacey look into the camera and say, “That's my baby,” unlock the lingering mystery of “The Yelling,” and ask whether a movie should be allowed this much access to your brain's question-asking off switch. If confidence were fuel, this film, and this episode, would never need to stop for gas. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3890160/

Fifty years on from the release of the film Carrie, directed by Brian DePalma and based on the first novel by Stephen King, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode look at King adaptations on screen, from The Shawshank Redemption to The Shining. Why is the work of the modern horror maestro so often adapted? And what is the best ever Stephen King adaptation?Ellen hears from US critic and writer Maitland McDonagh, who has been a front-row witness to King on screen for five decades, about her favourite adaptations of his work - from Misery to The Monkey. And Ellen speaks to Edgar Wright - the director of Shaun Of The Dead, Baby Driver and the most recent King adaptation to reach cinema screens - The Running Man. Meanwhile, Mark talks to Mike Flanagan - the filmmaker who, perhaps more than any other in recent years, has helped keep King's work vividly alive on screen, with adaptations of Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck and a forthcoming new take on Carrie.
Today on the show – Edgar Wright is back! The Running Man is his new Stephen King adaptation, co-written with Michael Bacall, and on this week's show, the three of us run for our lives through the reality TV dystopia of that movie, and its creation. The film is a new take on the 1982 novel of the same name, and imagines an America in a state of national calamity. The economy is in ruins. Violence is on the rise. Corporations rule everything. And authoritarian brutality has become primetime entertainment in the form of a gameshow in which cash-strapped contestants are hunted down and dispatched as a form of TV spectacle. The longer you survive, the more money you make for the loved ones you'll soon be leaving behind. But of course, if you somehow manage to make it through thirty days alive, you can return to that family, one billion dollars richer. Edgar and Michael are no strangers to the sort of kineticism inherent in a premise like that. Edgar is of course the filmmaker behind breathless popcorn classics such as Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and 2017's Baby Driver. Michael meanwhile is the writer behind both 21 and 22 Jump Street – two of the best action comedies in recent decades. The Running Man sees the pair – who previously worked together on the script for Scott Pilgrim Vs The World – back at maximum velocity and bringing the noise. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Edgar and Michael tell me about the overlaps they found between the 2025 that King predicted and our own real-life version (the original novel was set in our present day). We talk about the anger that drives their protagonist in this tale, Ben Richards, played by Glen Powell. And, with A.I such an integral part of the malevolent Network and their manipulation of the public in this tale, I was also curious to ask Michael and Edgar where each of their heads are at, in terms of that technology and the slow, dangerous creep of it into our moviemaking landscape?Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. One of the themes of the Lean Out podcast is the Sexual Revolution — and weighing its benefits and drawbacks, both for women and for men. Today on the show, we are going back to the period that led into that historical moment, to a bohemian movement of art and travel and sexual experimentation, but also of destruction and dysfunction and family tragedies. We're talking about the Beat Generation. Our guest on today's program has written the introduction to a reissue of an astonishingly good book that explores all of this, written by Jack Kerouac's daughter Jan. Amanda Fortini is an American magazine writer and Substacker. She's a columnist at County Highway and a frequent contributor to T: The New York Times Style Magazine. She's joins me to talk about the 1981 novel Baby Driver by Jan Kerouac. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 1, 2025 is: pseudonym SOO-duh-nim noun A pseudonym is a name that someone (such as a writer) uses instead of their real name. // bell hooks is the pseudonym of the American writer Gloria Jean Watkins. See the entry > Examples: “Edgar Wright, the filmmaker and genre specialist who has given the world modern gems like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver, estimates he was around 13 years old when he read ‘the Bachman Books,' a collection of four novels that Stephen King published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman during the early years of his career.” — Don Kaye, Den of Geek, 9 Oct. 2025 Did you know? Pseudonym has its origins in the Greek adjective pseudōnymos, which means “bearing a false name.” French speakers adopted the Greek word as the noun pseudonyme, and English speakers later modified the French word into pseudonym. Many celebrated authors have used pseudonyms. Samuel Clemens wrote under the pseudonym “Mark Twain,” Charles Lutwidge Dodgson assumed the pseudonym “Lewis Carroll,” and Mary Ann Evans used “George Eliot” as her pseudonym.

Based upon the 1982 Stephen King sci-fi novel of the same name, this dystopian action thriller takes place in a not-too-distant-future where just a few select corporations run everything and one of them controls most of the entertainment, including THE most popular show on TV, "The Running Man." Our beleaguered hero Ben Richards (Glenn Powell) enlists for this high-stakes reality show which involves him...you guessed it....on the run from various "hunters" who are seeking out him with plans to kill him, anywhere in the country. Directed by acclaimed genre filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World), this is NOT a remake of the 1987 cult classic of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Though that film was a loose adaptation of the same novel) And it features LOTS and LOTS of running, go figure! :) Also among the stacked cast are Josh Brolin, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, and Lee Pace. The future isn't sleek or utopian; it's loud, televised, and brought to you by your favorite corporate sponsors. In Edgar Wright's high-voltage new film, “The Running Man,” entertainment has literally become a blood sport. Based on Stephen King's 1982 novel, this isn't your father's dystopia; it's a world where survival ratings matter more than life itself, and one wrong move can make you viral in all the wrong ways. Glenn Powell stars as Ben Richards, a man framed, hunted, and transformed into TV's latest disposable hero. It's a punchy, adrenaline-fueled reinvention from a filmmaker who loves turning chaos into choreography. Wright trades the candy-coated energy of “Baby Driver” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” for something grittier and sweatier, a survival thriller that feels uncomfortably close to our algorithmic present. Aaron Alexander, Andrew Gordon & Greg Alba react to Baby Driver (2017), the stylish and adrenaline-fueled action crime thriller from acclaimed director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Known for its seamless mix of music, motion, and mayhem, Baby Driver delivers one of the most unique and rhythmically charged experiences in modern action cinema. The film stars Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, West Side Story) as Baby, a getaway driver with unmatched skill behind the wheel who choreographs every heist to the beat of his personal soundtrack. His world spirals when he falls for Debora, a kind-hearted waitress played by Lily James (Cinderella, Yesterday), and dreams of escaping his life of crime. Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, House of Cards) plays Doc, the calculating mastermind who runs Baby's crew, joined by Jon Hamm (Mad Men, The Town) as the dangerously unpredictable Buddy, Eiza González (Alita: Battle Angel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) as his partner Darling, and Jamie Foxx (Collateral, Django Unchained) as the volatile and menacing Bats. Iconic and highly searched moments include the opening car chase synced to “Bellbottoms”, the foot chase set to “Hocus Pocus”, the coffee run long take, and the final confrontation between Baby and Buddy. This week, Andrew shows up for a minute before his night-night time, and then leaves Kevin and Lauren to fend for themselves to discuss Alien: Earth, Caught Stealing, Eenie Meanie, Oh, Hi!, Night Always Comes, The Gilded Age, and Peacemaker. Since Andrew is on borrowed time this week, he and Kevin quickly break down the latest episode of Alien: Earth. I have a feeling this will be a theme over the next few weeks... As with the previous episodes, this one does not disappoint. We are digging into these new characters and discovering some wild new species and skills that are making this show a must watch so far. After tucking Andrew in and singing him a lullaby, the show moves on with Lauren discussing her sneak peak of Caught Stealing. This one stars Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, and a handful of other big names. It's a solid action dramedy that seems to be exactly what the previews led us to believe - this is Darren Aronofsky channeling Guy Ritchie and it sounds like it worked pretty well. Next up, Kevin talks about the new Samara Weaving film, Eenie Meanie. This film is somehow both good and bad, corny and dramatic, and fun and sad. Trailers will definitely give shades of Gone in 60 Seconds or Baby Driver, and that's not entirely wrong, but at some point, the film siwtches up on you and tries to give to feels, which is arguably when it becomes the better film. Weaving is really solid, so if there's no other reason to watch, check her performance out. Heading out to the theater, Lauren discusses the film Oh, Hi! starring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman. Imagine a genderswapped Gerlad's Game, but also a comedy.. If it sounds insane, well, it is a little. But with that being said, it is a lot of fun, if not chaotic. The crux of the story is that, when a woman finds out her latest love is a player, she puts him in a position where he has no choice but to face his decisions. Yeah, it's nuts, but it's fun! In an effort to kill that light mood, Kevin talks about the emotional suckage that is, Night Always Comes. It stars rising actress Vanessa Kirby as a down on her luck woman who needs to get $25,000 in a single night to save her family. In most films, this would turn into a fun caper, but here we spiral with this woman, diving deeper and deeper into her painful past. While Kirby is fantastic in the part, the film lacks any semblance of joy and ends with an odd decision, sure to leave you wishing you'd done almost anyting else with your time. As we power towards the end of the episode, Lauren brings joy back to our lives. She start watching, and quickly finished, The Gilded Age on HBO. It's a period piece, a la Downton Abbey, but in the US and a few decades earlier. Loosely based on the Venderbilt family, it's a story of new vs old money and all of the complications that come with high society. With standout performances from Carrie Coon, Christine Baransky, and Taisa Farmiga, this one is not to be missed. Kevin brings the show to a close with a quick review of the season 2 premiere of Peacemaker. If you watched season 1, this is more of the same, but in the best of ways. Gunn manages to retcon the DCEU in a fun way without disrespecting that universe. This season begins Peacemaker's multiversal journey into his own existential crisis. While absolutely hilarious, and expectedly raunchy, it has some wondeful heartfelt moments that are setting up some major decisions for Peacemaker to deal with throughout the season. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Auuuugust Racing Month is picking up speed here on We Drink & We Watch Things, and this week, we're taking a joyride with the stylish and music-driven "Baby Driver." This film is all about the rhythm of the chase, but we're also taking a closer look at whether its smooth moves on the asphalt hold up on the cultural curb. Grab your headphones, because the soundtrack is just as important as the horsepower. This week, we're diving into Edgar Wright's slick heist flick, where the action is choreographed to the beat of an amazing playlist. We'll be talking about the ingenious way the film uses music to drive the plot and the driving, as well as the truly fantastic car chase sequences that are still a blast to watch. However, we're also going to have an honest conversation about some of the elements that might not have aged as gracefully, and how our perspective on the film has shifted since its release. It's a great time, but it's worth a second look.If you're a fan of Edgar Wright, a sucker for a killer soundtrack, or just want to hear a conversation that goes beyond the surface-level fun of a movie, then this is your next listen. We're blending our appreciation for the film's technical brilliance with our usual casual banter, making this a thoughtful and entertaining installment in our Auuuugust Racing Month! This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram and TikTok to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. From a violent East L.A. childhood under an abusive preacher father to stabbing his dad at 16, Joe's rage fueled over 30 audacious bank heists, outwitting the FBI with disguises and body doubles. Solitary confinement nearly broke him, but a transformative correspondence sparked redemption. Now a writer and Hollywood consultant (Baby Driver, Taken), Joe unpacks trauma, toxic masculinity, and the system's role in crafting criminals. Is his redemption real, or is he a pawn in a larger narrative? GUEST: Joe Loya is a former bank robber turned acclaimed writer and Hollywood consultant. Growing up in East L.A. under a violently abusive Christian minister father, Joe's trauma culminated in stabbing his father at 16, igniting a path to crime. In the late '80s and early '90s, he robbed over 30 banks with cunning disguises and high-speed escapes, earning notoriety as California's most elusive outlaw. After two years in solitary confinement, a correspondence with author Richard Rodriguez sparked his transformation. Loya's memoir, The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell, and his work on films like Baby Driver and Taken showcase his storytelling, rooted in his youth as a Bible preacher. Featured in The Guardian and CNN, Joe's journey from rage to redemption raises questions about trauma, criminality, and the system's role in shaping both. Joe's remarkable story is the subject of Season Four of the podcast series, The Burden: Get the Moey and Run. Eiza and Dax talk about her father's priority always being for her to learn as many languages as possible, why her dad passing away suddenly influenced her to pursue acting full time, and experiencing insecurity when she started working in America. Eiza explains why she rides so hard for those who first gave her a shot, seeing her new “Substance-in-space” horror film Ash in theaters, and how she learned the lesson that really horrific things can give way to the most beautiful, life-changing opportunities.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
