While the concept offers a fresh take on the source material, the execution has garnered mixed reactions. We discuss the film's attempt to blend various horror subgenres, from slasher to supernatural, and how this approach impacts the narrative cohesion. The ensemble cast, including Ella Rubin and Michael Cimino, delivers commendable performances, yet the character development often feels secondary to the film's stylistic choices. This week's pick was made supporter Dylan, who's previous picks have ranged from the gritty realism of Training Day to the surreal comedy The Big Lebowski. And this pick is going back to 1978 on on the serious side of the scale with, The Deer Hunter. The Deer Hunter was an ambitious and challenging endeavor, driven by director Michael Cimino's meticulous vision. Initially conceived as a smaller war film, the project expanded dramatically as Cimino rewrote the script, emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll of war. The film's harrowing Russian roulette sequences, which became its most infamous hallmark, were not based on historical accounts but rather intended as a metaphor for the randomness and brutality of war. The production faced difficulties from the start, with Cimino's insistence on authenticity leading to grueling shoots in both the U.S. and Thailand, where the Vietnam War sequences were filmed. The cast, led by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage, underwent intense training to embody their roles convincingly, even immersing themselves in the culture of steelworkers in Pennsylvania before filming. The film's Thailand shoot was particularly grueling, with cast and crew working under extreme conditions to capture the harrowing war sequences. Controversy also surrounded the film's depiction of the Vietnam War, with critics arguing that its portrayal of the Viet Cong was one-sided and sensationalized. Additionally, Cimino's perfectionism led to a chaotic production schedule, frequently going over budget and over time. However, despite these challenges, The Deer Hunter became a landmark film, earning widespread critical acclaim and winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Cimino. The film's haunting themes, striking cinematography, and raw performances solidified its place as one of the greatest war films ever made, though its troubled production foreshadowed the excesses that would later plague Cimino's career. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where friendship is forged in steel and tested by war… three men embark on a journey that will change them forever. From the quiet streets of a Pennsylvania mill town to the unforgiving jungles of Vietnam, they will face horrors beyond imagination. Captured. Tortured. Forced to play a deadly game where the stakes are their own lives. As they return home, shattered and haunted, one man will risk everything for the brother he left behind.

In all the annals of Hollywood flops, Heaven's Gate stands tall. Michael Cimino's follow-up to The Deep Hunter, a film beloved by seemingly everyone other than Jane Fonda at the time, it bankrupted its studio and became a byword for commercial failure. But what if we told you... it was good? Admittedly you might not be as surprised as people once were. Since its 1980 release, Heaven's Gate has been restored and reassessed, and now Graham and Mark are teaming up to give it a few more flowers. We also pay tribute to its star, the late, lamented Kris Kristofferson, a man who practically exemplifies the concept of a solid dude. From a film about hate comes an episode about love. ---------------------- Acesse nosso site: http://www.filmesclassicos.com.br Acesse nossa página no Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/podcastfilmesclassicos/

The Book I HAD to Write

In this episode, I talk with author and novelist about his recent hybrid memoir and cultural exploration, Always Crashing in the Same Car. We discuss his fascination with figures who faced creative crises in Hollywood, from F. Scott Fitzgerald, filmmaker Hal Ashby or musician Warren Zevon to more overlooked but similarly brilliant figures like Carole Eastman, the screenwriter of the 1970s classic Five Easy Pieces. We also explore the realities of growing up in LA, including being “celebrity-adjacent.” That's perhaps best illustrated by the time Marlon Brando left an incredible monologue in the form of a voicemail. We do a deep dive into the attraction of hybrid memoir for fiction writer, Matthew's approach to research, and whether it's possible any longer to be a middle-class creative in Hollywood.--------------------------“All of those kind of impulses fused in me, and eventually, and I sort of realized, like, oh, this is what I want to write. I want to write a book that's a memoir that isn't about me, or a memoir that's only kind of, you know, partly about me.”--------------------------Key Takeaways* Always Crashing In the Same Car pays homage to figures who've faced both genius and marginalization in Hollywood, including Thomas McGuane, Renata Adler, Carole Eastman, Eleanor Perry, Hal Ashby, Michael Cimino, Warren Zevon & more. The book is about “those who failed, faltered, and whose triumphs are punctuated by flops...”* Matthew shares his fascination with Carol Eastman, best known for Five Easy Pieces. He was deeply touched by her prose writings, comparing her to poets like Hart Crane and Wallace Stevens.* The book and the interview also delves more deeply into women's contributions to Hollywood, focusing on other overlooked talents like Eleanor Perry and Elaine May. Matthew reflects on his mother, a one-time screenwriter, and how her generation had less opportunity to develop their skills.* Why a hybrid memoir? Matthew was reading, and inspired by, writers like Hilton Als, Heidi Julavits, and Olivia Laing. He wanted to create a narrative that wasn't limited to—or rather moved beyond—the self, weaving together cultural criticism about Hollywood and creative crises.* We talk a lot about voice, which Matthew says is crucial for him to discover early on. “Once I can locate the voice for any piece of writing... I have it in the pocket,” he says. The narrator of this book blends personal reflections with a noir quality, he says.* Matthew sees himself as a novelist at heart. He considers the narrative tools of a novelist indispensable, even when writing memoirs and cultural critiques: “I am fundamentally a novelist….I think that's part of being a fiction writer or novelist is, you know, anything that you write is a kind of criticism in code. You're always responding to other texts.”* Matthew begins by explaining his unique research style: "I'm kind of ravenous and a little deranged about it…” His research process involves intuitive dives, like a two-day blitz through Carol Eastman's archives.* The discussion also touched on Matthew's upbringing with a mom who was a one-time screenwriter and who crossed the picket line during one writer's strike, and his father, who had modest beginnings but went on to become a famous Hollywood “superagent” representing Marlon Brando, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren & many others.* At the same time, Matthew explores misconceptions around Hollywood glitz, addressing the middle-class reality of many involved in the film industry. For a long-time, Hollywood could support such middle-class creatives, Matthew contends, something that is no longer really possible.* Addressing the evolution of the entertainment industry, Matthew notes the shift towards debt servicing, influenced by corporate acquisitions. This financial pragmatism often overrides the creative impulse, squeezing the middle class out.* Another takeaway? The creative world, especially in Hollywood, is fraught with periods of drift and struggle. In one sense, Always Crashing In the Same Car is a love letter to that state of things.--------------------------"I still kind of think of [Always Crashing…] as being secretly a novel. Not because it's full of made up s**t…but because I think sometimes our idea of what a novel is is pretty limited. You know, there's no reason why a novel can't be, like, 98% fact."--------------------------About Matthew SpecktorMatthew Specktor's books include the novels That Summertime Sound and American Dream Machine, which was long-listed for the Folio Prize; the memoir-in-criticism Always Crashing in The Same Car: On Art, Crisis, and Los Angeles, California, and The Golden Hour, forthcoming from Ecco Press. Born in Los Angeles, he received his MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College in 2009. Many great films came out in 1978 ... several because  Hollywood began to tell stories of what soldiers experienced both during the Vietnam war that had just ended a few years before, and also how they dealt with coming home.   The Deer Hunter was one of those films.  Director and screenwriter Michael Cimino created a layered, powerful, and very raw film about three men dealing with this situation.  The performances are incredible and it's incredible technically. However, looking back, did The Deer Hunter deserve the Oscar for Best Picture? Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about The Deer Hunter as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1978 to.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Tags: OscarsAcademy AwardsBest PicturewinnermoviesfilmreviewRewatching Oscarpodcast

To wrap up their cycle on "Unique Best Picture Winners," Julian, Emilio, and Madeline take a deep dive into the life and work of the great actor John Cazale. Best known as Fredo Corleone in "The Godfather" Parts I and II, Cazale appeared in only five feature films in the 1970s before his untimely passing. However, all five of those films became iconic, both in and beyond his lifetime, and made Cazale a mainstay of the Best Picture Oscar category in the process. On top of the first two "Godfather" films, Cazale also starred in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" (1974), Sidney Lumet's "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), and made his final appearance in Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" (1978). The trio touch on all five films, focusing in depth on three of them, to appreciate the immense quality of Cazale's acting in the limited quantity of his career, and make external connections and speculations of what Cazale may have gone on to do had he lived longer.      If you enjoy our podcast, please consider writing us a positive review on your podcast platform of choice. CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence and racist themes. The film critic and author Adam Nayman returns to the show for a deep dive into Michael Cimino's 1985 pulp crime thriller Year of the Dragon, starring Mickey Rourke, John Lone and introducing the fashion model Ariane Koizumi as the female lead.  Year of the Dragon was Cimino's attempt to reassert himself as an important (and commercially viable) American filmmaker after his post-Deer Hunter fall from grace in the wake of the disastrous Heaven's Gate. Rourke plays Captain Stanley White, a highly-decorated Polish-American cop (and Vietnam veteran) transferred to New York's Chinatown precinct who pursues an increasingly unhinged personal war against the young and ambitious new leader of the Triads, Joey Tai (Lone), using an ambitious Asian news reporter to do it, leading to an escalating bloodbath. MGM/UA had to add a disclaimer to the film after the release in the wake of protests and legal threats from the Chinese-American community set off by the rabble-rousing screenplay by Cimino and Oliver Stone (on the precipice of his own directing career) Adam and I discuss Year of the Dragon as a Problematic Fave: an insanely detailed example of screen artifice (including a hyper-realistic fake New York Chinatown built at Dino DeLaurentiis' studio lot in North Carolina that even fooled Stanley Kubrick) with movie star performances and spectacular filmmaking clashing against chaotic emotional (and racist) outbursts and WTF moments that mark this film as a secret highlight of eighties American cinema, influential not only on Kubrick but also Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson and Michael Mann.
