On this episode of the Supercast, meet some multi-talented Native American students who were part of an annual Jordan School District Community Night celebrating culture through traditional dance, music, a dynamic drum circle, art, and more. Hear how the Native American students hope to use their academic success to serve as a springboard for future pursuits and personal growth. Audio Transcription Student: What it means to us is it just brings us a lot of joy. It means of being part of something, being together with people of any race, whether you're Native American, Mexican, but it's just bringing together togetherness and just seeing the different diversities that you see or ethnicities. It's just really cool. [Music] Anthony Godfrey: Hello and welcome to the Supercast. I'm your host, Superintendent Anthony Godfrey. They have dedicated their lives to celebrating culture, community, and academic achievement, and now they've made it to graduation, receiving well-earned high school diplomas. On this episode of the Supercast, meet some multi-talented Native American students who were part of an annual Jordan School District Community Night, celebrating culture through traditional dance, music, a dynamic drum circle, art, and more. Hear how the Native American students hope to use their academic success to serve as a springboard for future pursuits and personal growth. [Music] Anthony Godfrey: We're here at West Jordan Middle School talking with two of our students who are part of the Native American program tonight. Introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about what this night is all about. DJ: Hello, I am DJ. I am part of the West Jordan High School Affinity Club, and I am here selling beadwork. We came here to present some of the beads that we have presented that our students or some of the people in our club have made. So all these beads or everything you see on the table that we have behind us has been made by our hands. We also came here to present to see other and just can't wait to see like the diversity we see here in different tribes. EJ Jones: Hi, I'm EJ Jones. I'm one of the members of the West Jordan Affinity Club, and yes, we are selling bracelets that are made by our wonderful students. Not only do we not just have bracelets, we also have earrings and phone chains for by wonderful students of ours that joined our club, and I'm so glad to see so many people here tonight because it's like a wonderful experience. Anthony Godfrey: What does it mean to you both to be part of the Native American Affinity Group at your school? Student: It brings us, what it means to us is it just brings us a lot of joy. It means of being part of something, being together with people of any race, being whether you're Native American, Mexican, but it's just bringing together togetherness and just seeing the different diversities that you see or ethnicities. It's just really cool and being part of that club really immerses you into a whole new world where you've never seen. You see like these different creative backgrounds between different people, different stories, and it's just wonderful to see that. Student: Yeah, it's just honestly, this club to us honestly just shows us what, that you don't have to be a Native American to join it. You can just join it to show, we can like show you what us Native Americans do and you can show us what you do just so we all can connect as one person. Anthony Godfrey: As you mentioned, anyone can be a part of the group and really it's about connecting with each other and feeling a part of the broader school. Students: Yeah, exactly. Anthony Godfrey: Tell me about some of the experiences you've had through the Native American program. I know that there was a drum making class recently. What are some of the things that have happened as a result of the program and place here in Jordan? Student: So of course the drum making class, I can't put a finger on exactly a lot of the events, but I know like we've gone on a field trip sometimes to see like different like, I think it was the Natural History Museum. That was pretty fun and it's just it, and this program just brings you to like, it brings you to a whole new world. Anthony Godfrey: You mentioned the diversity of tribes here tonight. Do you know which tribes are represented? Student: Navajo is definitely a big one. I know that maybe Ute, probably Apache, Shoshone, and just like there's so many to name that I just can't keep, but there's probably quite a bit that are here tonight that are being represented and some that are wanting to shine out more. Anthony Godfrey: I think that's really exciting that so many tribes are represented and I love this program in the way that graduates are honored with a sash and just with a recognition for all of your accomplishments. How does it feel to be at this stage? You know, if this, if this represents your, your education, you're right here, you're right at the last few weeks as a senior, how does it feel to be honored tonight? Student: It feels very like, like it feels very like surreal. It just feels like it's like it just all went by so quick and it's just like being here is like, you're actually like, “oh my gosh, it's like happening.” Like it's, it just immerses you into a whole new world and you're just like, “oh my gosh, what's like, it's happening now.” It's like, you just like, it like, “where did the time go? Where did the things go?” It just flew by so quick. Anthony Godfrey: So, well it only goes by faster and faster. What's next for you? Student: Straight to college. I'm going to community college first to get my general education done. Anthony Godfrey: Do you know what you want to study beyond that? Student: I know I want to study computer science and then hopefully become a teacher. Anthony Godfrey: Wonderful. Student: Yeah. Anthony Godfrey: Well, we'll watch for you coming back to Jordan School District. Student: Okay then. Anthony Godfrey: All right, thanks very much for talking with us. Student: Thank you so much. Join us today at JordanVirtual.org. Anthony Godfrey: Now we're going to come into the gym at West Jordan Middle School and watch some round dances with participants from across the District. Brenda Villal : Thank you so much for joining us today. I'd like to introduce myself in the traditional way that my people introduce themselves. [Native language] Brenda Villal : I just said that my name is Brenda Villal and I am born into the Salt Clan, born for the Taurine House people, and my maternal grandparents are the Edgewater people, and that is how I identify as a woman, as a mother, and as a friend. Do I have any relatives here today? Is there any? There we go. Someone is Ashia or is it Kiaani? So, welcome. Thank you so much to Ami for allowing us to come and lead this round dance. The round dance is done all over the United States and Canada and beyond. It is a social dance that is done to show community and connection. And take a look at the circle. The circle shows that all are equal. This young girl here is equal to this tall man right over there with the tie. This young girl here is equal to this person over here in the blue suit. So a circle brings everyone together in an equal place or an equal space. The round dance is a social dance. Everyone is invited to participate. We always go in a clockwise direction and we usually hold hands and we love to have everyone participate if they would like to. If there are people that don't fit in the circle, just come grab somebody's hand and we'll make the circle bigger for you so that you all get to be a part of it. [Music] [Music] Hello. My name is Brenda Villal and that's the way I identify. I am Dineh. I am born into the Salt Clan. I'm born for the Towering House people. Today or tonight we were able to experience the Native American round dance. The only dance that we have found that the eight sovereign nations within Utah, the only dance that can be done that where everyone is invited to participate. But it is important for these nations to have a Native American representative either host or lead. We write educational resources. We co-create with the eight sovereign nations to change the narrative about indigenous people here within Utah. And tonight we were able to share the Native American round dance. We were very fortunate to have a drum group by the name of Red Spirit join us here in this beautiful building for all of the children and parents and staff in Jordan School District to experience the round dance. [Music] Anthony Godfrey: We also have the Native American mentor here with us from Jordan School District Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about this program and what it involves. Steve Hawkins: Sure. I'm Steve Hawkins and I'm the high school mentor in the District for Native American students. The big goal of the program is to help students pursue their educational and vocational goals in a culturally sensitive way to help them retain a sense of culture, be exposed to their own Native culture and strengthen that within the education system. One thing you should know is these kids are scary overachievers. You'd be very proud of them, Dr. Godfrey. They, the average GPA for our Native students is 3.0. Herriman High School students have a 3.5 GPA. The Native students there, two of them have 4.0. Anthony Godfrey: Oh that's awesome. Steve Hawkins: And also so many of the students are deeply involved in the JATC like DJ, who you just met, has learned computer programming at the JATC and 10 of our students have had a fantastic experience there and prepared for careers after high school. Anthony Godfrey: How many Native American students would you say do we have at any given high school? Steve Hawkins: West Jordan and Copper Hills have quite a few, about 30 each. Our lowest number is probably at Riverton with five. So, I'd say probably the average is 15 to 20. Anthony Godfrey: To me that just makes it so much more important for you to be there to connect and make sure that in schools of thousands of students that they connect with the broader community and don't lose the sense of personal identity, and in fact, enrich their sense of personal identity. Steve Hawkins: Yeah, and that's really the goal of the program particularly like you said is identifying with their culture and continuing to connect with that. That's why we did drum making which is not just making an instrument but there's a whole discussion on the spiritual and cultural relevance of it and it was a great experience. The kids were engaged from the very start to the very end. Anthony Godfrey: On a night like this, beyond what we do as a District and the work you do as a mentor, we see the support from families and from the broader community and the donations that come in and of the booths that are here. Describe a little bit of the family and community connection that's created. Steve Hawkins: One thing you'll see when you talk Native families is they are so close. Not only the parents are inspiring their kids pushing them to educate pushing them to get educated to achieve but they're also very tied in with their aunties and their grandparents and there's this wonderful sense of family values and community among the Native Americans here as witnessed by all the people who are here. The community itself has also been incredibly supportive. We have got thousands and thousands of dollars of prizes donated from retailers in the community in support of our Native students. Anthony Godfrey: It grows every year and it's really fun. I really look forward to it this time of year. What do you love most about being a mentor for our Native American students in high school? Steve Hawkins: Oh by far the best part is just to sit down and talk with them one-on-one and find out how life is going, how school is going and hear about their plans. These kids have great vision. It's really impressive that they are so capable of expressing themselves, that they have goals, they know what they want to do and they also know where they're there as they haven't decided yet, which of course who knows at 15 right? Anthony Godfrey: Sure, sure. Steve Hawkins: But they're just they're the kind of people that give you really hope for your country and your world just talking to them. Anthony Godfrey: I love that. That's what working with youth is all about. So well thank you for everything that you do and for talking with us tonight. We have a great night ahead of us. Steve Hawkins: It's a pleasure. Thank you. [music] Anthony Godfrey: Thanks for joining us on another episode of the Supercast. Remember, “Education is the most important thing you'll do today!” We'll see you out there.

Why do so many talented teams still underperform? The answer surprised me. Most people assume the answer is more collaboration, better chemistry, or simply working harder. But workplace psychologist and bestselling author Ron Friedman, author of the new book Superteams, says the highest-performing teams operate very differently. In this conversation, I sit down with Ron to unpack the hidden habits that separate average teams from the great ones. We talk about why too much collaboration can actually hurt performance, the surprising science behind smarter team decisions, and the small shifts leaders can make to help teams perform at a higher level. Ron shares practical, research-backed strategies and challenges some of the myths keeping teams stuck and underperforming. By the end of this conversation, you'll rethink what great teamwork actually looks like and walk away with actionable tools you can apply immediately with your own team. Blocking, Tracking and Grinding In Sales

THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 12:27

Sales success rarely comes from one brilliant play, one miracle client, or one giant deal. It comes from doing the basics repeatedly: prospecting, following up, meeting buyers, tracking activity, and grinding through the boring work other salespeople avoid. Vince Lombardi, the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, talked about the importance of blocking and tackling in American football. The same idea applies in sales. The flashy strategy matters, but if the fundamentals are weak, everything collapses. Why do salespeople need to master the basics? Salespeople need to master the basics because revenue is built on consistent, repeatable activity, not hope. Big deals are wonderful when they land, but they rarely arrive without disciplined prospecting, follow-up, and pipeline management. In sales, the equivalent of blocking and tackling includes cold calling, referral requests, client research, CRM updates, proposal follow-up, and face-to-face buyer contact. These tasks are not glamorous. They are often boring, irritating, and repetitive. Yet in Japan, the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, the salespeople who survive downturns are usually those who keep doing the fundamentals while others chase bright shiny objects. Landing the whale client sounds exciting, but years can pass while the promised revenue never appears. Do now: Measure the activity that creates revenue, not just the revenue you hope will appear. Why do talented salespeople sometimes fail? Talented salespeople sometimes fail because intelligence can tempt them to skip the grind. They believe the basics are for lesser mortals and that one clever strategy or major client will rescue the numbers. This is a dangerous mindset in B2B sales, professional services, corporate training, SaaS, consulting, and recruitment. Smart people can talk persuasively about future revenue, strategic accounts, and game-changing opportunities. The problem is simple: until the deal is signed and the money is banked, it is not revenue. Many capable salespeople have left organisations because they preferred impressive possibilities to daily execution. Talent matters, but discipline converts talent into income. Do now: Treat your sales pipeline as evidence, not imagination. If it is not moving, it is not real. How did the pandemic change sales prospecting? The pandemic made sales prospecting harder by pushing buyers out of offices and behind new barriers. Cold calling became more frustrating because receptionists, assistants, and internal gatekeepers often had less access—or less willingness—to connect sellers with decision-makers. Since COVID-19, many clients in Japan and other markets have shifted to hybrid work, remote meetings, and stricter communication filters. Calling the office may produce vague responses, blocked contact details, or a polite refusal to share an email address or phone number. This makes the traditional sales routine more difficult, especially for SMEs and service businesses that depend on new conversations. Yet the need for sales has not disappeared. Business still depends on buyers discovering better solutions, services, and ideas. Do now: Assume the old route to the buyer may be blocked. Build several routes instead. Should tobikomi eigyo make a comeback in Japan? Tobikomi eigyo, or unannounced in-person sales visits, may deserve a careful comeback when phone and email access are blocked. It is not always efficient, but it can create a buyer contact when every digital channel is failing. In Japan, 飛び込み営業 has a long history in sales culture, even though many modern sales teams consider it outdated or inefficient. Post-pandemic, that assumption may need rethinking. If the buyer is back in the office two or three days a week and competitors are not visiting, a professional drop-in can stand out. Not every building allows easy access, especially newer offices with QR codes, reception systems, and security gates. Still, where access is possible, a short visit may create enough human contact to secure a proper appointment later. Do now: Use in-person visits selectively, respectfully, and with a clear reason the buyer should care. How can salespeople respond when gatekeepers block access? Salespeople should respond to gatekeepers with calm persistence, not frustration or arrogance. The aim is to protect the brand while still showing the resilience expected of a serious sales professional. Gatekeepers often believe they are helping the boss by blocking unknown callers, visitors, and sellers. Sometimes they are. But companies also need new suppliers, better services, and fresh ideas, especially during difficult business conditions. A useful response is to acknowledge their viewpoint while reframing the behaviour as the same determined mindset they would want from their own sales team. This approach is particularly important in Japan, where professionalism, politeness, and face-saving matter. Being pushy damages trust; being resilient can earn respect. Do now: Stay polite, firm, and commercially relevant. Never let irritation become the message. What alternatives work when cold calling fails? When cold calling fails, salespeople should create buyer attention through physical mail, referrals, targeted content, and carefully designed outreach. The key is to make the buyer curious within seconds. A mailed package can bypass the phone gatekeeper because assistants may block calls but still deliver physical mail to the executive's desk. The package should not look like ordinary paperwork. A slightly lumpy, relevant, useful item can earn a brief moment of attention. However, the contents must immediately answer the buyer's pressing need. In today's overloaded business environment, attention is narrow. Whether selling training, consulting, software, financial services, or recruitment solutions, the offer must quickly show relevance, urgency, and value. Do now: Design outreach around the buyer's problem, not your product brochure. Final summary Sales is full of boring work, and that is exactly why many people avoid it. Prospecting, tracking, follow-up, gatekeeper navigation, office visits, mailed outreach, and daily discipline are not glamorous. They are the commercial basics that keep businesses alive. The salesperson waiting for the whale client may sound strategic, but the salesperson doing the blocking, tackling, tracking, and grinding is usually the one who survives. In difficult markets, especially post-pandemic Japan, the winners will be those who harden up, return to fundamentals, and keep creating real buyer conversations. Why So Many Talented Women Never Make It to Leadership | Erika Chestnut - 2003

Many women in sales struggle with feeling like they're not fully qualified for leadership roles, even when they're already doing the work. That self-doubt can make it harder to pursue promotions and career growth. To help break this down, I invited leadership coach and tech executive Erika Chestnut to share the challenges women face when advancing their careers and how sales leaders can better support them.Meet Erika ChestnutErika Chestnut is a transformational leader with more than 25 years of experience in the tech industry. She is passionate about helping individuals and teams rethink leadership, communication, and workplace culture to create stronger performance and long-term success. Through coaching, leadership development, and strategic guidance, Erika equips professionals with practical tools to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and lead more effectively. The Confidence Gap Holding Women BackErika shares how often women underestimate their readiness for leadership opportunities. She explains that many women feel like they need to accomplish every requirement before applying for a promotion, while others are comfortable taking the leap much earlier.Erika also shares an exercise she uses with clients where they compare their current responsibilities to the role above them. In most cases, women are already doing 50% to 75% of the next position without realizing it.Many women feel pressure to constantly prove themselves through performance while still struggling to advocate for their own advancement. Erika explains how this mindset can keep high performers stuck, even when they are already operating at the next level in their careers. Why Leaders Need to Better Understand Communication StylesCommunication styles also play a major role in career growth. Erika explains how many leaders unintentionally overlook talented women because they communicate differently from more outspoken employees. She also shares how some employees naturally focus on details while leaders are often focused on outcomes. When communication styles do not align, high performers can easily be misunderstood or overlooked.Treat Your Career Like A BusinessErika shares advice on how women can become more intentional about career growth by treating their career like a business. Set goals, build relationships with mentors and stakeholders, and develop a strategy for long-term advancement instead of waiting to be noticed.“Success doesn't come by copying somebody else. Success comes when you know who you are.” — Erika ChestnutResourcesConnect with Erika Chestnut on LinkedIn or visit her website to learn more about leadership development, career strategy, and building confidence as you grow into your next role.Keep track of your sales activity and boost your results with the Prospect Pro sales tool.Step up your sales game with Sales Mastermind. If you've ever felt overlooked, passed up, or stuck despite your talent, this episode will challenge you to look in the mirror, take responsibility, and finally break through the wall that's holding you back.In this eye-opening episode, Mack Story unpacks John C. Maxwell's powerful truth: “Your character growth determines the height of your personal growth.”Drawing from real-world career stories and Norman Schwarzkopf's sobering insight that “99% of leadership failures are failures in character,” Mack reveals why so many sharp, capable professionals remain trapped at the bottom of the corporate ladder…not because they lack skills or intelligence, but because their character is holding them back. You'll hear about the “confused” people who blame the world, their bosses, and their co-workers while unknowingly sabotaging their own potential, discover the difference between getting hired for competency and getting promoted (or fired) for character, and learn why more degrees and technical training will never fix what only character-building can.

Acting Business Boot Camp
Episode 387: Why Talented Actors Stay Invisible

Acting Business Boot Camp

There are so many incredibly talented actors out there. And so many of them do not get seen. Meanwhile there are actors with less training booking roles more regularly. And if you are one of those highly trained actors, that is so freaking frustrating. It brings up all the not so helpful questions. Am I not good enough? Why am I not getting these opportunities? Insert your favorite self-doubt here. But here's the truth. Talent alone does not guarantee visibility. I know this as a casting director. I also know this as an actor. Talent Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle Acting is an art. Just like painting, just like dancing, just like writing. But the industry that hires actors is a business. And casting directors, I can certainly say this for myself, are not only looking for great performances. We're also asking very practical questions. Does this actor fit this role? Do they understand the tone, the energy of the project? Do I feel they are professional and prepared? And then my personal favorite: does this actor know they are a good actor? What tends to happen is actors focus entirely on craft while overlooking the business side. And if you want to make a living as an actor you need to understand that both parts matter. Actually I'd say there's a third part. One of my favorite casting directors of all time, David Katy, talks about this. It's a three part job. The art, the business, and the work on yourself. Clarity Around Your Positioning One of the reasons talented actors stay invisible is that casting directors don't know where to place them. Or they try to present themselves as everything, and that just doesn't work. Confusion makes me delete. It really does. It makes me discard and move on. Go for the low hanging fruit. If you've ever seen pictures of me I am very blonde, blue-eyed, very east coast. I look like I went to preparatory school in Connecticut. And you know why? Because that's exactly what I am. I am the boss. I am the lawyer. That's my low hanging fruit. I'll tell you an embarrassing story. When I was 16 I went to a summer course at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York and I wanted to do Runaways. A show about kids on the street, in foster care, drug addicted. I would love to go back to my 16 year old self and say honey, that ain't you. Any John Hughes monologue would have been so much more appropriate. But hey, I was 16. And I met a really cute boy there so that was awesome. The point is, be where you're at. Go for what you really are. Casting works insanely quickly and we need to understand in seconds where you fit. Visibility Requires Consistent Action Another reason talented actors remain invisible is that they are not consistently putting themselves out into the industry ecosystem. Most careers grow through steady participation in the professional community. Steady participation. A lot of actors wait for the industry to discover them. They wait for the phone to ring. That is just not how it works anymore. What I call putting your business on a schedule means knowing exactly what to do and when to do it throughout the year. Auditions, networking, social media, industry relationships, creating your own work, staying engaged with casting directors and collaborators. Gabrielle Bernstein says the energy you put out is the energy you attract. That steady participation energy is so important. Confidence and Presence This is the secret sauce. This is the thing I cannot state strongly enough. I was talking to my teacher Ken Ray from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, who has taught Michelle Dockery, Damien Lewis, Joseph Fiennes, Orlando Bloom, Hayley Atwell, Lily James, Ewan McGregor. I asked him what is the thing they all have. And he talked about presence. That energy. That is what I am always looking to cultivate with my clients. Two actors can have equal talent. The one who walks in with grounded confidence is the one who makes the stronger impression and books the job. It's the actor who is good at their job and knows they're good at their job. Confidence doesn't mean arrogance. It means believing you belong in the room. Confidence isn't something that casting gives you. It's something you decide before you go in the door, before you push record on that self tape. The only person I ever have to convince is me. And that just happens to be the hardest person on the planet. But that's the only person I have to convince. The Bottom Line Talent matters. But visibility in this industry comes from a combination of things. Craft, clarity, consistency, and confidence. It's a three part job. The art, the business, and the work on yourself. Talent can open the possibility of an incredible acting career. But clarity and consistency and confidence is what allows the industry to really see you. Want to Keep the Conversation Going?
