Death was a major part of everyday life in the Victorian era, and people developed elaborate ways to mourn, remember, and preserve the dead. In this episode of Lunatics Radio Hour, we explore the history of Victorian funerary traditions and the social and historical circumstances that shaped them in Britain and the United States. We look at Victorian mourning customs, postmortem photography, mourning jewelry, human hair art, funeral rituals, embalming, funeral biscuits, mourning stationery, death masks, and Victorian cemeteries. We also examine how the American Civil War helped popularize embalming in the United States and how Queen Victoria's mourning for Prince Albert influenced Victorian mourning culture. Along the way, we separate historical practices from later myths, including the popular story of Victorian "tear catchers." Finally, we trace these traditions into Gothic literature and horror movies, looking at how Victorian cemeteries, mourning clothes, old photographs, preserved bodies, and memorial objects became part of the visual language of supernatural horror. Because the Victorians weren't trying to make death scary. They were trying to find ways to live with it. Follow us on social media @ TheLunaticsProject. Get Lunatics Merch here. I hired a contractor to replace my home's siding. What followed was a $20,000+ contractor nightmare involving missed deadlines, poor communication, terrible workmanship, and mistakes that were simply covered up with caulk. After bringing in company executives and an independent inspector, we discovered major installation problems-including improperly spaced nails and improperly wrapped windows. The entire project eventually had to be redone. This is my contractor horror story and a cautionary tale for anyone considering a major home renovation or repair. The gym owner horror stories continue. In Part II, Scott Carpenter and Andy Boy Miller get into another side of business ownership that can be just as painful as bad leases, permits, and construction problems:The people side of the business.Scott shares the story of a longtime personal training client who injured herself after doing something her trainer specifically told her not to do—only for an attorney's letter to show up shortly afterward.Even with liability waivers, insurance, certifications, and documentation, Scott and Andy explain why there is no contract that can completely eliminate your risk as a business owner. Then Andy shares one of the most difficult lessons from the early years of his gym. When he first opened, he gave several close friends discounted "lifetime" memberships. Years later, when the business could no longer afford those rates, he asked them to move toward the gym's standard pricing. He expected his closest friends to understand.Instead, every conversation went badly. Some of these were people Andy had vacationed with, invited to his wedding, and considered close friends—and the situation ultimately cost him both memberships and friendships. The conversation becomes a bigger lesson about separating personal relationships from business decisions, understanding that clients will usually make choices based on what's best for them, and developing the emotional resilience required to stay in business long term.Scott and Andy also discuss how stoicism helped them through some of their most difficult seasons as entrepreneurs, including Scott's recommendation of Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is the Way.Because in business, things will eventually go sideways. The goal isn't to avoid every problem. It's to build the perspective, systems, and resilience to handle them when they happen. In This Episode:00:14 – Recapping Gym Owner Horror Stories Part I00:35 – Why liability gets more complicated as your business grows01:09 – Why waivers and contracts can't completely protect you01:24 – How lawsuits can become a financial war of attrition02:15 – The insurance loopholes gym owners need to understand03:41 – Scott's story about a longtime personal training client05:10 – The gym injury that happened after a client ignored instructions06:26 – Why every gym should have an incident report process07:02 – When the client's tone suddenly changed08:36 – The attorney letter that showed up a week later09:00 – How documentation and text messages helped protect the business10:43 – Why problems can come from the people you least expect11:20 – Andy's biggest early pricing mistake12:07 – Asking his founding members to move to normal rates12:55 – Why every single conversation went badly14:22 – Losing customers AND close friendships16:37 – Developing a thicker skin as a business owner17:34 – The reality of putting your clients' needs ahead of your own18:58 – Bad reviews, chargebacks, and long-term clients turning against you20:36 – Why you can't take every business setback personally21:15 – How stoicism helped Scott and Andy through hard times21:36 – Scott's recommendation: The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday23:39 – Preparing yourself for the inevitable problems of business ownershipThe Biggest TakeawayProtect the business, but don't let the business destroy you emotionally.Have your waivers.Keep your certifications current.Document incidents.Save important communications.Be careful with special pricing and promises that could become unsustainable later. But also understand that even when you do everything right, people may still leave, complain, threaten legal action, dispute charges, or turn against you. That doesn't mean you stop caring about your clients. It means learning to make decisions based on what's sustainable for the business instead of making every decision out of fear of disappointing someone. As Andy explains in the episode, business owners in service industries naturally care deeply about their clients—but your clients aren't necessarily thinking about what their decisions will do to your business or your family. And when the hard seasons come, perspective matters.Don't take everything personally. Learn from it, adapt, and keep moving forward.
A veteran detective is assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young girl after chilling CCTV footage captures her wandering alone outside a convenience store in the middle of the night. A cryptic note reading "Do Not Look For Me," disturbing photographs, anonymous messages, and an unexplainable figure hidden in the surveillance footage slowly unravel reality itself. When the detective realizes the man in the footage is himself, the case transforms into a terrifying psychological nightmare where every clue leads closer to something impossible to explain. If you enjoy true scary stories, detective horror, missing person mysteries, psychological horror, creepy pasta, paranormal investigations, unsolved mysteries, and immersive horror narration, this terrifying story is for you.

Book a FREE 1-on-1 Call: https://ptlegends.com/1on1call | FREE Training: https://ptlegends.com/free-training-optin | PT Legends: https://ptlegends.comBeing a business owner means putting a target on your back—and sometimes the problems that show up have nothing to do with marketing, sales, or getting more clients. In this episode of The Profit Lifestyle for Fitness Entrepreneurs, Scott Carpenter and Andy share some of their craziest gym owner horror stories and the expensive lessons they learned along the way.Scott takes it back to his first few weeks as a business owner, when an independent trainer refused to follow the rules, had to be removed from the gym with police involvement, and was followed by a written threat from the trainer's girlfriend to publicly trash Scott's new business.Andy shares how his gym was suddenly hit with a cease-and-desist order after discovering that the contractor who reinforced his floor years earlier never completed the work to code—leaving Andy with a $20,000 repair bill and a gym he couldn't legally operate until the problem was fixed. From there, Scott and Andy break down the hidden dangers of commercial real estate, leases, permits, ADA requirements, building classifications, SBA financing, and unexpected construction costs that can put an entire business at risk.Scott also shares how a building-code issue nearly turned into a $180,000 fire sprinkler project, and how questioning the property's classification ultimately helped him avoid the expense. These aren't just horror stories. They're reminders that when you're signing leases, building out locations, dealing with contractors, or navigating financing, you have to understand what you're agreeing to and be willing to advocate for yourself. In This Episode:00:21 – Why becoming a business owner can put a target on your back01:49 – Scott's first nightmare experience after buying a gym04:29 – Dealing with a difficult independent trainer05:07 – Terminating the relationship and the confrontation that followed06:20 – Why Scott eventually called the police07:39 – The blackmail email that came next09:51 – Andy's first major gym owner horror story10:35 – Getting hit with a cease-and-desist order12:32 – The mistake that eventually cost Andy $20,00013:35 – The hidden costs inside commercial leases14:41 – Why your building's usage classification matters16:10 – How a sprinkler requirement exploded into a potential $180,000 expense17:25 – How Scott found a workaround and avoided the massive bill18:57 – Andy's ADA compliance nightmare during construction21:17 – Fighting for an alternative before the project became financially impossible24:27 – Why commercial real estate requires extreme due diligence26:23 – Asbestos testing and another unexpected financing problem27:59 – Putting another $20,000 at risk just to keep the deal alive29:15 – Creating a Plan B when everyone kept promising the loan would close29:41 – Why nobody will protect your business as much as you will30:10 – Why Scott and Andy are sharing these storiesThe biggest takeaway? You have to be your own advocate.Contractors can make mistakes. Banks can delay financing. Cities can change requirements. Landlords will protect themselves. And the people involved in your transaction don't have the same amount at stake that you do.Ask questions. Read the lease. Understand the permits. Verify what you're being told. And when something doesn't make sense, keep digging. And if you're going through your own gym owner horror story right now, remember—you aren't the only one who's been there.Scott and Andy have been through it too, and there are plenty more stories where these came from.Part II coming next.

This week Abby and Alan dig into the strange history of witch bottles, a form of folk magic once used to protect from witchcraft, curses, and supernatural attacks. We explore where the practice came from, how witch bottles were made, why they were hidden in fireplaces, walls, and beneath floors, and what archaeologists have discovered centuries later. From 17th-century England to colonial America, witch bottles reveal a fascinating intersection of folklore, magic, superstition, and everyday life. We'll also look at the objects and rituals believed to make these bottles work, and how this obscure piece of folk magic eventually found its way into the imagery and traditions of modern horror. If you're interested in witchcraft, folk magic, occult history, supernatural folklore, haunted history, paranormal traditions, and the real history behind horror, this one is for you. This week on the FratChat Podcast, we're checking into an Airbnb and immediately wishing we hadn't. We're counting down 10 Airbnb Horror Stories that range from disgusting disasters to genuinely terrifying true crime. We've got an $18,000 party from hell, a toilet catastrophe that caused nearly $300,000 in damage, a guest who basically decided to live rent free for 570 days, hidden cameras, a deadly carbon monoxide poisoning, a horrifying Airbnb murder and MORE. Basically, everything you want from a vacation rental except a relaxing vacation. But before we start ruining Airbnb for you forever, we've got two listener emails: one from a guy whose girlfriend's bedroom talk is making him question his entire existence, and another from a woman whose boyfriend thinks he's the next Johnny Depp despite being, according to her, absolutely terrible at acting. We also get into the USS Abraham Lincoln, Donald Trump's “not nearly long enough” comments about a 260 day deployment, and another edition of Not the Drag Queens, featuring some truly wild allegations surrounding Turning Point USA. And because apparently we couldn't go five minutes without talking about bodily functions, we somehow end up discussing Lenny Kravitz's legendary turd, selling it on eBay, “weaponizing his ass with baby wipes,” and the recurring Poopy Party theme. Oh, and there's a little P. Diddy, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and MORE! Got a question, comment or topic for us to cover? Let us know! 3 Terrifying TRUE Vacation Horror Stories
Tonight I have 2 chilling fishing horror stories from deep in the backcountry, one from a remote cutthroat creek in the Idaho wilderness, and one from the northern Maine woods, far past the gates, where the good water is a long walk from the nearest road. Two trips, planned the same way fishermen have always planned them: pick water nobody else fishes, and go. If you enjoy true scary stories, wilderness horror, and creepy encounters from hunters and fishermen, subscribe and turn on notifications, new stories every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/its_just_creepyStory Credits:►Sent in to https://www.justcreepy.net/Timestamps:00:00 Intro00:01:07 Story 100:59:00 Story 2Business inquiries:►creepydc13@gmail.com#scarystories #horrorstories

In this classic radio episode, Savage explores the question, "What is truth?" through a mix of politics, religion, immigration, personal experience, and warnings about psychedelics. He and callers discuss psychedelic drugs, including LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA, with callers describing frightening experiences, addiction, trauma, and lasting psychological consequences. Savage questions claims about the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics and challenges the overly optimistic media narratives surrounding them. Savage and callers converse on themes of reality, ego, faith, and human survival and conclude with warning that audiences should remain alert to manipulation and deception.
Some places have ghost stories. Others have legends that locals know better than to ignore. This week we're reading hometown horror stories featuring haunted bridges, cursed landmarks, cryptids, and eerie encounters that prove the creepiest paranormal activity might be waiting just down the road. Stories include: A nightmare at a remote campground leaves one listener wondering if a terrifying goat-headed figure was trying to make them sign something they never should have. A trip in the mountains of British Columbia takes a terrifying turn after multiple witnesses spot a pale creature silently gliding through the woods. A late night drive through the countryside becomes a race against a towering creature that keeps pace with a speeding car. A paranormal research team shares unsettling encounters from land bordering one of the world's most infamous supernatural hotspots, including impossible voices, a disappearing deer man, and more. Watch the video version here. Have ghost stories of your own? E-mail them to us at twogirlsoneghostpodcast@gmail.com New Episodes are released every Thursday and Sunday at 12am PST/3am EST (the witching hour, of course). Corinne and Sabrina hand select a couple of paranormal encounters from our inbox to read in each episode, from demons, to cryptids, to aliens, to creepy kids... the list goes on and on. Tonight, I have some disturbing stories from people working the night shift, when most of the world is asleep, the buildings are empty, and help may be farther away than you think.Working alone after dark can make even an ordinary job feel unsettling. But sometimes, the things that happen during those quiet early-morning hours are more than just an overactive imagination.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/its_just_creepyStory Credits:►Sent in to https://www.justcreepy.net/Timestamps:00:00 Intro00:01:03 Story 100:14:06 Story 200:28:18 Story 300:36:20 Story 4Business inquiries:►creepydc13@gmail.com#scarystories #horrorstories
