OMG, Mary Anne wants Logan back! More importantly, though, she wants an A on her group project and nobody is going to get in the way of that. Not Logan, not Cokie, not a particularly exhausting B-plot. On today's agenda: an unexpected Pete Black redemption arc; Karen has not forgiven Kerry Bruno; Hot Dog Laws; a very specific concept of romance; signs your date is not going well; authentic cat shenanigans; Mary Anne's Bump of Wistfulness; a fish fountain without a bicycle; disgraceful Toilet Monster denialism; the seductive power of five pounds of candy; urgent priorities for HSE reform; diversity in monster representation; a romantic getaway to Brick Township; absolutely too much manifesting; Logan enters his rake era. Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. If you like our show, tell a friend, rate and review on your podcast app of choice, and come say hi on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram! In this episode, I delve into the history of Brick Township. Although not considered a traditional “shore town,” Brick's rich history was, and still is, tied to the Shore. The late 1800's and early 1900's saw oceanfront property taken from Brick, to establish Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, and Mantoloking. Join me as I discuss this once sleepy summer getaway town-turned suburban hub.

This week, we have Ester Jordan from Kick Cancer Overboard.  This is a non profit organization based in Long Branch.  Their mission is to give free cruises to families that have been affected by cancer.  They also organize various local fundraisers to support a specific individual or family.  They offer a great cruise at a reduced price, and the more paying passengers they book, the more people they can sponsor to travel for free. Ester became involved after her granddaughter Lucia developed leukemia several years ago.  They were one of the families s that were awarded a free cruise, so to give back to the organization and help other families, Ester makes and sells bracelets in which all profits go to help families in need.  She is also organizing a fundraiser at Chick Fil A in Brick Township on Tuesday February 23rd.   For more information please visit kickcanceroverboard.org. SHOW LESSCoach Chrissie McGovern grew up in Franklinville, NJ She grew up playing different sports with her cousins. Eventually, she moved to Washington Township and attended Gloucester Catholic. She played basketball for Coach Lisa Gedeka. Initially she was set to continue her basketball career at University of the Sciences but at the last minute, she had second thoughts. She went to GCC and then Rowan where she played basketball. After graduating from Rowan and becoming a Phys. Ed Teacher, she was offered a job teaching and coaching in Brick Township. She stayed there for 4 years but wanted to work closer to home. She started teaching and coaching at Cherokee. The district moved staff around and she was moved to Shawnee under Coach Anderson. He stepped down and let he know that she would be the new Head Coach. Coach McGovern was fortunate to inherit a talented team and made it to teh SJ Group 4 Finals in her first two seasons. Last year, Shawnee caugh fire at the right time. As the number 14 seed they upset Clearview, Jackson Memorial and Lenape and returned to the SJ Group 4 Finals. They faced sister school and division rival Cherokee HS. There was not an empty seat in the house. Game was tight until the middle of the third quarter when Cherokee went on a little run and ended up beating Shawnee. It was an amazing run for a team that nobody but Shawnee thought would win. Coach McGovern is back to her winning ways with a new starting lineup after graduating 4 seniors. This year they are taking it one game at a time and focusing on tough defense and protecting the ball. With the help of her all female staff they look to go deep in the playoffs next year. https://twitter.com/shawneeladybbal Music Credit: https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Nicholas_Mackin/A_Journey/04Nicholas_Mackin-Ellinor-A_Journey_II-A_Journey-SLC41_Soisloscerdos

January 3, 2018 Partly cloudy with high temperatures near 30 degrees. NJ BRACES FOR STORM THAT COULD UNLEASH ‘BOMB CYCLONE’ Watch for milk and bread to disappear from supermarket shelves today, as New Jerseyans prepare for a significant snowstorm that is moving up the Atlantic Coast. Len Melisurgo reports for NJ.com that depending on the track the storm takes, as much as a foot of snow could be dropped on parts of the state. The storm could become a so-called "bomb cyclone" because of the way it is expected to rapidly intensify as it moves up the coast from Florida. REPORT: MARIJUANA REVENUE COULD REACH $1 BILLION IN NJ If New Jersey taxed legal marijuana aggressively, the state could take in $1 billion a year, according to a law firm’s projections. James Nash writes for The Record that the estimate from the Roseland law firm of Brach Eichler is based on projections of sales tax and license and franchise fees. But police are already expressing concerns about the possibility of legalizing marijuana for recreational use in the state. Meanwhile, several municipalities in Ocean County have passed or are considering bans on sales of marijuana, Mike Davis writes for the Asbury Park Press. LONG BRANCH COMMUNITY TRIES TO MAKE SENSE OF SLAYINGS More than 200 people braved sub-freezing temperatures to gather Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil for the four victims of a New Year’s Eve shooting in Long Branch, Dan Radel reports for the Asbury Park Press. Scott Kologi, 16, is accused of killing his father, mother sister and a family friend with a semiautomatic rifle, Chelsia Rose Marcius and Rich Schapiro report for the Daily News. Kologi’s first court hearing, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed until today, after a media request was made to open the juvenile proceeding. DAUGHTER OF EX-MAYOR SENTENCED IN $940,000 THEFT Kim Bogan, the daughter of a former Brick Township mayor, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty in October to stealing more than $940,000 from the township’s health insurance program, Spencer Kent reports for NJ.com. Bogan, who worked for the township for 30 years, submitted claims for chiropractic services from her brother, despite never receiving the treatments. NJ MAY BECOME FIRST STATE TO BAN CIRCUSES WITH EXOTIC ANIMALS The Assembly is scheduled to vote this week on a measure that would ban circuses with wild animals from traveling to or around the state, Colleen O’Dea writes for NJ Spotlight. The Senate passed the bill in October. The New Jersey state director of the Humane Society of the United States said the measure would “essentially make New Jersey the first state in the nation to comprehensively ban circuses with live animal acts.”
