In this episode, I'm joined by Selma Zollman, a music therapist and member of Brazilian Voices—a nonprofit female vocal group based in South Florida. For over 22 years, Brazilian Voices has been bringing the tranquil sounds of Bossa Nova into hospitals, medical facilities, and schools, uplifting patients, families, and healthcare workers through music. What You'll Hear:Pam's personal journey with grief and how art and music can provide solace in times of loss.Selma Zollman's story of following her passion for music therapy and joining Brazilian Voices. The transformative power of harmony—how Brazilian Voices uses soft, multi-part singing to create a gentle ambiance in hospitals, allowing patients, families, and staff to simply “be.”Why the group's presence is about illumination, not cure, and how performing with “no expectations” brings peace for both singers and listeners.Heartfelt anecdotes about the response from patients (including those at end-of-life), their families, and healthcare workers touched by the music.Selma's thoughts on the importance of expanding similar music programs to more hospitals and healthcare settings, despite the challenges around privacy and logistics.Ways to follow and learn more about Brazilian Voices, including their Instagram, Facebook, and website.Learn More:Find out more about Brazilian Voices:Instagram: @brazilianvoicesFacebook: Brazilian VoicesWebsite: brazilianvoices.orgConnect with the Show:Host Pam Uzzell welcomes your feedback and stories. Playing adventure games has traditionally been a solitary experience. But more recently there have been more co-op games released and Sixth Force is one such game. Seoirse had the chance to play this co-op action adventure game at Reboot last year and loved it so much he invited the developers onto the podcast. They spoke about how they started the game, how they wanted to focus on the relationship between the father and the son in the game, difficulty levels in the game and so much more. On Friday, April 25, thousands of labor activists, including USW members, marched and chanted through the streets of Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, as part of an annual event commemorating the murders of two Los Mineros union members who were killed while on strike in 2006. In today's episode, we recount the mine explosion and consequential strike that led Los Mineros President Napoleon Gomez to live in exile for nearly a decade in Canada. We're also chatting with members who attended this year's trip to Mexico, as well as a USW activist who participated in a recent global youth exchange program co-hosted by the Steelworkers and Los Mineros. This episode features music by several artists, including Ketsa, Lobo Loco, and Greg Kirkelie.

In this concluding episode of the series focusing on artists and climate change, I'm reflecting on the emotional impact of dedicating multiple episodes to the pressing issue of climate change. Initially optimistic about the potential of governmental agendas to address environmental issues, I'm feeling disheartenment, to say the least, due to political challenges that threaten environmental protection efforts. However, I found renewed hope through community engagement and the creativity of young filmmakers at a film screening event I co-hosted.Key Highlights:· My Personal Journey: I share my shift towards a more eco-conscious mindset after focusing on climate-themed episodes.· Political Disappointment: My optimism about Biden's climate agenda is challenged by political setbacks, including threats to the EPA and public land protections.· Community and Art as Hope: I highlight a film screening event I co-hosted with filmmaker Kristin Tièche, featuring local films on environmental topics. Young filmmakers offered a refreshing perspective, focusing on community solutions and creative problem-solving.· Young Filmmakers' Impact: Despite climate challenges, the youngest participants exhibited hope and determination, emphasizing community engagement as a path forward.· Appreciation and Future Vision: Thank you, listeners for your support! Stay tuned for the next series which will focus on artists in healthcare fields, beginning in early April.Mentioned Films and Contributors:1. The Invisible Mammal by Kristin Tièche, focuses on bats.2. Film by Cynthia Abbott featuring artist Tess Felix and her ocean plastic portraits.3. Above Ground by Jimmy Ramirez, discusses Oakland's natural waterways.4. Threads of Change by Ethan Lee, covers fast fashion's environmental effects.5. Plus, we all learn a valuable lesson about not relying on were-hedgehog erotica for accurate information on natural history topics. On today's agenda: real men dispose of their documents responsibly; Karen goes against her own moral code but stops short of murder; Logan fails as a provider because he's 13; more cinema-based humiliation; 32 pages on the real meaning of marriage; an unusually entertaining yet troubling Pike chapter; WE WENT TO LONDON AND DID THE THING; a traumatic egg-based jumpscare; non-toxic, painless baby paint; the one non-negotiable requirement of competent parenting. Full context for the ferret thing: https://www.newsweek.com/move-over-meerkat-manor-87497 Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. In Episode 32 of the Great American Novel podcast, we slip through time with Billy Pilgrim as we shuffle between the character's experiences as a prisoner of war and first hand witness to the Dresden firebombing in World War II and then trip the light fantastic to the far flung planet Tralfamadore. Or…do we? Yes, this episode has your intrepid explorers hiding in Kurt Vonnegut's masterful 1969 post-modern novel SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE. We ponder the author's central questions: are all war novels doomed to sensationalize war? Can you capture such a horrific experience realistically? Must we become automatons to survive wars? The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture. Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration. Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter. All opinions are their own and do not reflect the points of view of their employers, publishers, relatives, pets, or accountants. All show music is by Lobo Loco. The intro song is “Old Ralley,” and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.” For more information visit: https://locolobomusic.com/. The trailer clips are from the film adaptation, Slaughterhouse-Five, adapted in a screenplay by Stephen Geller, dir. George Roy Hill.We may be contacted at greatamericannovelpodcast (@) gmail.com.

No bows and arrows, no hunting buffalo on horseback. Walter Ufer saw first-hand that Native Americans in the 1920s weren't the romanticized caricatures from the old Wild West shows. In today's episode we're looking at “Callers” and find out how a city boy from Chicago ended up in Taos, NM and broke all the rules when it came to depicting his friends and neighbors as real people trying to balance the modern world with tradition. On this episode of the Focal Point Podcast, Digital Editor-in-Chief Will Clifford uncovers the forgotten power hold the Ku Klux Klan had on the city's political and social landscape in the early 1900s and how their reign of terror left a lasting impact on the city's culture. We'll examine how the Klan influenced the city through historical documents and interviews with Dr. Michael Phillips, the author of the book “White Metropolis,” and Associate Professor of History at the University of Texas at Dallas, Dr. Whitney Stewart.Tune in as the Focal Point Podcast sheds light on this topic, often left out of history books— helping us better understand the forces that have shaped Dallas into the city it is today.———————————All the phrases on the cover art were headlines from newspapers shared in Texas at the time.———————————Produced by Will CliffordMusic courtesy Lobo Loco via Free Music Archive———————————#UnmaskingDallas #FocalPointPodcast #DallasHistory #HiddenHistory #WhiteMetropolis #TexasHistory #ForgottenPast #DarkHistory #HistoricalTruth #SocialImpact #UTDHistory #HistoryPodcast #TruthMatters #RevealingThePast #Smremarker #stmarks #local #dallas #texas———————————smremarker.com

OMG, Mallory's found a ghost cat! Or a reincarnation cat? Or possibly just a regular cat? This book definitely comes down on the side of “ghosts are real”, but is EXTREMELY vague on what ghosts actually are and whether they can use a litterbox. Also, the Pikes learn about Alzheimer's! Merry Christmas, folks! On today's agenda: a litany of crimes against food; the cool lesbian biker auntie we all wish we were; Mallory and Jessi's shameful secret; it's not crop theft if you know the farmer; some remarks about aging that are frankly uncalled-for; cut-rate ectoplasm detectors are a false economy; Claudia Kishi, old-person whisperer; Esther's cat chooses violence. A couple of weeks ago—after this episode was recorded, but before it was edited and posted—the famous author Stephen King posted online his top ten novels of all time—and among them was Katherine Anne Porter's Ship of Fools. This 1962 book was the first novel by Porter, a great American writer who had mostly worked in the short story genre and as a journalist and editor. The novel tells of a German passenger liner traveling from Mexico to different ports of Europe in the 1930s. It presents a multinational, highly varied cast of characters. Ship of Fools received rave reviews at first, before then suffering through the obligatory critical backlash. The film rights sold for what at the time was a kaboodle of money and the movie was nominated for and received a number of Academy Awards. Hosts Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough wrestle with these questions: is this work a great American novel after all? Are we all fools bound on an eternal quest for understanding or relevance or fares with inclusive food and drinks? Why did the author take thirty years (almost) to finish the book? Come steam away with us as we sort it out.
