Empire Goes All the Way Down: Joerg Rieger on What "Christian Nationalism" Misses

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2026 74:43

This is the first live Q&A for the new class, and Joerg Rieger came ready. Christ and Empire came out during my last year of div school, and that's why I was so excited to try to study with him, until Joerg promptly went on sabbatical. So this whole class is, in a sense, twenty years of making that up. The argument is not that empire won. It's that across two thousand years, empire could never take over. There was always resistance, always alternatives, always a surplus that couldn't be contained. This hour ran through what "empire" lets us see that "Christian nationalism" alone misses, why the German translation of one word cracked open the whole project, why Paul is neither conservative nor liberal, what happens to the middle when the right keeps moving right, and what a confessing moment would actually look like here and now. Next week we go to Nicaea. Those of you who are creedally allergic have been warned — and Joerg says there's a surplus in Constantine's creed next week too. The Christ Empire Couldn't Keep is running now. Sign up at homebrewedclasses.com — you don't have to donate anything. You'll get access to all the lectures, you can send in questions by replying to any class email (that's where every question in this Q&A came from), and you'll be connected to the online community working through the material together.  You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Dr. Joerg Rieger is the Distinguished Professor of Theology and the Cal Turner Chancellor's Chair of Wesleyan Studies at Vanderbilt University and founding director of the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice. For three decades, he has worked to bring together theology and the struggles for justice and liberation that mark our age. His work addresses relations of theology and public life, reflecting on the misuse of power in religion, politics, and economics. His interest is in movements that bring about change and in the positive contributions of religion and theology. His constructive work in theology draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary traditions, with a concern for manifestations of the divine in the pressures of everyday life. Several of his 24 authored and edited books address the topics of this course, including No Rising Tide: Theology, Economics, and the Future; Unified We Are a Force: How Faith and Labor Can Overcome America's Inequalities (with Rosemarie Henkel-Rieger); and Faith, Class, and Labor: Intersectional Approaches in a Global Context (with Jin Young Choi). www.joergrieger.com Previous Episodes w/ Joerg Why Religion Matters Now Theology in the Capitalocene Divine Justice & our Ultimate Concern  the End of Religion & Business as Usual Joerg Rieger: Jesus vs Caesar  Different Gods, Different Religions? Following a 27-year career as a CEO and entrepreneur, Jim Ellis became a professor and — from 2007 to 2019 — dean of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. Many of his former students are successful entrepreneurs and business leaders. Jim — author of the new book, A Journey of Insights: Lessons in Leadership and Legacy — says he learned as much as he taught by listening to the ideas and feedback of students, colleagues, alumni, family members, and even strangers. Many attributes distinguish a great leader from a good one. However, as Jim explains, being a discerning listener may be the most important leadership skill of all. You won't need an MBA to learn from Jim. All you need is to tune in to this week's episode. Monday Morning Radio, now in its 15th season, is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. Most organizations think fertility is a private matter. It is not. It is a silent talent drain hiding in plain sight. Employees quietly step back from opportunities, and by the time HR notices, the resignation letter has already been written. This episode is sponsored by Deel.Hire, manage and pay, anyone, anywhere: https://www.deel.com/nickdayhr/In this episode of @thehrldpodcast, Nick Day is joined by Jennifer Elworthy, a career and fertility coach and Director of Engagement at Fertility Matters at Work. Jen's own path into this work began in 2015, when a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, a miscarriage, and a second ectopic pregnancy left her navigating PTSD while working at a senior level in the media industry. Despite it all, with the right manager and the right support in place, she was promoted, and she now spends her career helping organizations turn good intentions into meaningful workplace policy. That lived experience, paired with the research she leads at Fertility Matters at Work, is exactly what she brings to this conversation.Nick and Jen explore why fertility remains one of the least discussed issues on the HR agenda despite affecting one in six people globally, and why the myth that it is not happening in your business is quietly costing UK employers an estimated 217 million pounds a year. They unpack the four questions every manager should ask when an employee discloses a fertility challenge, why 87% of managers have no training despite being the first point of disclosure for 70% of employees, and why a policy sitting in a dusty folder means nothing without a culture of psychological safety to back it up. They also dig into why fertility is not a women's issue, the hidden struggles of the childless not by choice community, the often overlooked reality of pregnancy and parenting after loss, and why career ambition and fertility treatment are not mutually exclusive, no matter how well meaning the advice to just relax might be.In a world where 38% of employees have left or considered leaving a role due to lack of support, this episode makes the case that the real barriers were never about policy documents. They are about silence, stigma, and managers who want to help but were never given the tools.A must-listen for HR leaders, L&D professionals, and anyone responsible for building a workplace where employees don't have to choose between their career and their fertility journey.Enjoyed this? This week, I'm wrapping up my season of “Brit Lit” by looking back at an ambitious reading project built around a trip through England. My goal was to arrive with some understanding of English history, a feel for the landscape and literature of northern England, and a grounding in English Christianity. Some choices were spectacular: Bede and Bijan Omrani became invaluable guides to the places we visited, while Tom Jones, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and Shakespeare's history plays brought the English countryside and its past vividly to life. Other choices taught me something about building a reading list itself: narrow the focus, be realistic about time, leave room for discoveries, and don't let someone else's recommendation distract from your purpose. Was the whole project a little pretentious? Probably. But it also gave me something I rarely make enough room for before a trip: anticipation. Reading before I traveled meant seeing England through two sets of eyes—mine and those of Bede, Fielding, Brontë, and Shakespeare. Next time, though? What does God see when He looks at our giving, our service, and our faith? In this powerful episode, Brother Jim explores the story of the poor widow in Mark 12 and the two tiny coins she placed in the temple treasury. While everyone else saw a gift that seemed insignificant, Jesus saw something completely different—a sacrifice born from complete faith and trust in God. Through this story, Brother Jim challenges us to look beyond appearances and ask the questions that truly matter: Are we giving God our leftovers or our best? Are we serving Him only when it is comfortable and convenient? And how much of our lives truly belongs to Him? From a remarkable story of a Vietnamese family who sacrificed their prized water buffalo for the work of the Gospel, to the ultimate example of sacrificial giving found in Jesus Christ, this episode reminds us that God measures sacrifice, not size; faithfulness, not recognition; and the heart, not the outward appearance. Brother Jim encourages us to consider what God has entrusted to each of us—our time, talents, resources, finances, and opportunities—and challenges us to stop asking, “God, what can You give me?” and start asking, “God, what can I give You today?” Because Jesus sees what everyone else misses. Key Scriptures: Mark 12:41–44, 1 Samuel 16:7, James 4:10, John 3:16–17, and 2 Corinthians 9:6–8. Listen, reflect, and ask yourself: What has God entrusted to me, and what am I doing with it for His glory?

This Is NOT How Lambs Work: The Shocking Old Testament Clue Everyone Misses About Jesus

In this episode, J. Warner Wallace takes you into the forensic details of the Bible's sacrificial system to examine a stunning claim: when John the Baptist called Jesus "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world," he was doing something that flatly breaks the Old Testament lamb pattern. Using the same cold-case, investigative approach he applied for years as a detective, J. Warner shows that the mismatch between the Old Testament lamb pattern and Jesus' sacrifice is not a problem to explain away—it's a powerful evidential clue that Jesus is the God-man, whose once-for-all sacrifice has infinite worth. If you've ever wondered how the sacrificial system really worked, whether penal substitution is biblically grounded, or why Jesus must be God for the atonement to make sense, this episode will help you see the Lamb of God with fresh eyes. If this episode was helpful, please subscribe and leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or wherever you listen. In this thought-provoking episode, Katie Crane explores whether Pilates instructors have always been progressively loading their clients, or whether the recent emphasis on heavy resistance training has shifted the conversation. Katie unpacks the definitions of progression and load, examines why the term has become so popular, and questions whether chasing heavier weights aligns with the true purpose of Pilates. Rather than rejecting strength training, Katie encourages Pilates professionals to understand where progressive loading belongs, how Pilates naturally develops strength, and why mobility, stability, and movement quality should never be sacrificed in the pursuit of heavier resistance. In This Episode You'll Learn What "progressive load" actually means. Why Pilates has always included progressive loading—even without adding dumbbells. How spring tension, repetitions, tempo, range of motion, and exercise progressions all contribute to loading. Why progressive overload has become a popular marketing term in the Pilates industry. The connection between women's health, aging, and resistance training. Why Pilates plays an important role alongside strength training rather than replacing it. How excessive loading can reduce mobility, flexibility, and movement quality. Why Pilates should continue to prioritize functional movement over simply lifting heavier. Key Takeaways Progressive loading is not new—it has always been part of Pilates. More weight doesn't automatically mean better outcomes. Pilates develops strength through intelligent progression, movement quality, and control. Mobility and stability are just as important as muscular strength. Heavy resistance training and Pilates complement each other when used appropriately. Great Pilates teaching is about building resilient, functional bodies—not simply increasing load. Memorable Quotes "Progressive load is what we do in Pilates—but we don't need to overload people if they aren't getting the Pilates principles right." "The magic of Pilates is joint health, better alignment, improved posture, proprioception, and dynamic stability." It may be pointing towards something much deeper: chronic misalignment between your life, your values, your emotions, your nervous system, and who you've become.Rather than asking "How do I stop feeling like this?", this video explores a more important question:"What is this feeling trying to tell me?"You'll also discover why many recovery strategies fail, how stress can become valuable information instead of something to eliminate, and why sustainable performance begins long before you reach complete burnout.

“You just have to believe that at some point it's going to translate into the actual result you want. These close calls aren't only going to be my defining story.”My guest for today's episode is Vince Ciattei — U.S. 5000m champion. At 31 years old, roughly 24 hours after losing the 1500m final by five hundredths of a second, Vince went back out at Icahn Stadium and won the 5K national title in 13:46.75 — an event he had raced once in the previous five years. It was the first national title of his career, and it came after a run of fourths, thirds, and seconds that have stretched across nearly a decade as a professional.Vince trains with Under Armour Dark Sky Distance in Flagstaff under Stephen Haas. He went to Virginia Tech, where he only became good enough to go pro in his fifth year. He came back from an injury straight away as a pro. He finished fourth at the 2024 Olympic Trials by a quarter of a second and has been on the edge of breaking through internationally for years, and this year it finally started to crack open — a 3:30 personal best in Rabat behind Yared Nuguse, Isaac Nader, and Azeddine Habz, a Diamond League schedule that treated him as a competitor rather than a time-trialer, a 13:13 at Payton Jordan in May, and then a weekend in New York where he went from reading a LetsRun writeup at 4 a.m. declaring he had missed his best shot to standing on top of the podium less than twelve hours later. In this conversation we get into all of it: The sports psychologist who helped him reframe a decade of near-misses as a trajectory rather than a verdict; The 24-hour turnaround between the two finals and what it took to flip the switch — including the middle-of-the-night LetsRun read, the drug testing chat with his mom afterward, and the moment when Kasey Knevelbaard came by with 250 to go and the race turned into a Dark Sky one-two.We also get into what Rabat and Ostrava showed him about where he actually stands internationally, the Diamond League final, the World Ultimate Championships, and the target that's been quietly driving his entire season: the World Road Running Championships mile in September, where he'll wear the Team USA uniform for the first time.____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSCORE: The CORE 2 Thermal Sensor takes the guessing out of heat training. Al, Zach, Christian, and John Luke trace the Gospel of Mark's surprising answer to the mystery running through all creation: Christ in you, the hope of glory. The guys connect Jesus to the kings, prophets, priests, sacrifices, and promises of the Old Testament, showing how the Bible forms one continuous story fulfilled in him. They also examine why the disciples recognized Jesus' power but struggled to accept a Messiah who would conquer through suffering. The cross ultimately reveals the true nature of God's strength and the radically different life his kingdom offers. In this episode: Mark 1:1–15; Mark 2:1–12; Mark 4:10–12; Mark 6:30–44; Mark 8:1–38; Mark 14:43–52; John 21:15–19; Luke 5:1–11; Luke 22:35–38; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 1:23–25; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:9–11; Colossians 1:27 Today's conversation is about Lesson 3 of Theology 101: The Western Theological Tradition taught by various Hillsdale Professors. 588: What Homeopathy Understands That Modern Medicine Misses With Ronald Whitmont, MD

Wise Traditions

What if many of the treatments we rely on to relieve symptoms are actually interfering with the body's ability to heal? Ronald Whitmont, MD, has spent decades exploring that question. A board-certified physician, homeopath, and former president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, he joins us to discuss the fundamental differences between conventional medicine and homeopathy—and why he believes modern science is beginning to validate what homeopaths have observed for more than 200 years. Dr. Whitmont explains how homeopathy works, the fascinating story behind its discovery, and why it was once one of the most widely practiced forms of medicine in the United States. He also discusses the Flexner Report, the decline of homeopathy in America, and the growing body of research on the microbiome that is reshaping our understanding of health and disease. Along the way, we explore symptom suppression, chronic illness, the body's innate healing capacity, and even the use of homeopathy in plants, livestock, and infectious disease prevention. Whether you're completely new to homeopathy or have used it for years, this conversation offers a thought-provoking look at healing, science, and the future of medicine.   WAPF Ad - WAPF Membership – Visit westonaprice.org and click on the "member yet" button.
