In the Season 1 finale, Alexandra Mack (aka Moses) joins Jeff to discuss life, love, and listening to Ramble by the River. They swap stories from growing up on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum, Alex provides some interesting facts about the history of kidney health in the United States, they both give recipes to some delicious Mexican dishes, and they spend a significant amount of time discussing what they love and what drives them crazy in relationships. Along the way we venture into celebrity crushes, gardening, Oktoberfest, jealousy, weird foods, mental health, and old regrets (specifically, NOT eating a scorpion when offered). Alex is a clinically-certified hemodialysis technician, an expert bar-tender/mixologist, and an avid listener of this podcast. Since day one, she has been a steady focus-group of one, providing valuable insights and critiques that have helped the show to take shape. I am very grateful to her for her input on a weekly basis and it was great to finally get her opinions on the record. The general tone of this episode is happy, reflective, and fun and I hope that spreads to you listeners as you hear it. If you have been with us since the beginning, you cannot miss this season wrap-up, and if you are just getting started with Ramble, I hope you will be back next season. It has been a true pleasure to make these 56 episodes for you this year and I can't wait to get started on Season 2! Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and most importantly share! Kelsey explains the series of events that led to the decision to start her own business and we'll hear about some of her triumphs and failures along the way. Kelsey and Jeff trade stories from the good ole days; like when she survived a drunk-driving accident just days after the drunk-driving awareness assembly at school, or when Jeff watched a man punch a horse in the face. You'll hear a lot about parenting, what it takes to be a working parent, and you'll get some opinions on corporal punishment (spanking) as a form of discipline. Internationally-acclaimed linguist Andrew Lapidus makes his second appearance on Ramble by the River and he does not disappoint. He gives us that trademark Lapidus wit as he explains the recent unemployment scare that almost became a deportation, along with some stories that he didn't plan to talk about, regarding the skeletons in his closet, and he mentions J.K. Rowling way, way less than last time. On this epic two hour masterpiece Jeff and Andrew traverse a variety topics, exploring the human experience, across a range of emotion so broad, yet somehow still so deep. You'll hear Andrew's review of Apple's most popular accessories, and periodically Jeff will try to convince Andrew of the promise of NFTs and cryptocurrency. You'll hear Andrew question the morality of billionaires, and Jeff whine about the loss of once-abundant natural resources. This was a fun episode to make and I really like the way it turned out. Andrew is a hilarious guy with a brilliantly sharp and witty mind. You are not going to want to miss this one. Ramble by the River is for entertainment only. From humble beginnings, born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Annika Wolters has made her mark on the world as a journalist, academic, and world-traveler. She is currently living in Bangkok, Thailand and working as a video editor for the Associated Press. But as we know, nothing worth having comes easy, and the last few years have provided countless challenges for this ambitious young woman. Join her and Jeff as they ramble their way through growing up on the West coast, attending Western Washington University (where Annika was President of the A.S.), traveling to Thailand, and navigating a pandemic while living abroad. Annika is a warm, thoughtful, and funny person and this is a really enjoyable conversation. It was great to catch up with an old friend and to discover that she has been out there accomplishing her goals and conquering her demons. Annika has accumulated some impressive achievements, but she remains humble and down to earth. She is out there making waves across the planet, and I'm proud to claim her as one of ours. After all, she started out as just another beach kid with a dream. Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy! Ned reveals some of his close-held opinions about raising kids, and he spills the beans on his hidden horse-related past. Don't miss it! Geoff Hylton, long-time friend of the show, makes a special guest appearance during the introduction and he tells a story about a time he was sexually assaulted by an elderly woman in public. It really makes you think. I laughed a lot while editing this one, and that doesn't mean everyone will love it, but it is usually a good sign. You might not be able to tell, but I was a bit nervous in the beginning and started to relax as we went along. It can be stressful meeting your role models under new circumstances. Episode 125 (Poonani, Space Trash and Rooting): Every 5 episodes we summon a magical beast from the neither regions. His name is Chris and if you've listened before you know the deal and maybe he's the only reason you come back to listen (and that's okay). Some people call it Poonani, some people call it Street Trash. But at the end of the day it's really just about putting everything behind you and Rooting. As always we opened the door to some pretty interesting conversations, personal stories, bad jokes and lots of laughs. Dr. David Shirazi is the founder of the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Center of Los Angeles, he holds multiple advanced degrees in dentistry and acupuncture, and he has traveled the world to find the best solutions for the problems that may be hurting you while you sleep. Dr. Shirazi joined me to discuss medical science, ancient wisdom, current practices, and how they all intersect to form his view of the best ways to maintain and even improve our health. Healthy sleep is vital to healthy function. But what makes sleep "healthy"? So many of us experience low-quality sleep for years or even decades, and may not even be aware that they have a problem. Did you know that children who are breastfed are far-more likely to develop proper breathing/swallowing mechanics? Not to mention, better breast-handling skills. Sleep apnea is an increasingly common threat that affects a growing swath of the population, including kids! But did you know that a commonly administered treatment can literally change the shape of a child's face, causing serious damage that can impair development and cause disordered breathing? No? Well my friend, get ready to learn some new shit. A big THANK YOU to Dr. Shirazi for being an excellent guest. Enjoy the show! Cindy Guzman visits the crab shed to talk about her life and the lessons that she has learned along the way. We covered her childhood in a rural Pacific Northwest town, her move to Mexico during her teen years, and her return the the foggy coast of Washington with a new perspective. Cindy is wise beyond her years and has many useful pieces of insight that can help anyone to live a more fulfilling life. She talks about the contrast between Mexico and the United States and suggests a few ways that the two cultures could benefit from trying to be a bit more like the other. It is obvious that Cindy has a deep love for her home and the people who live around her. She talks a lot about community building, altruism, and kindness. It was nice to be reminded that sometimes life can be simple if we let it be. Sometimes what really matters is just making sure everyone around is okay for now, and we can worry about everything else when we have no other choice. Cindy will help you to see that your life is actually pretty good and maybe looking at it from a different angle can help to make that clear. Thank you so much for being a listener! I love you guys! In this episode of Ramble by the River, Cody Chalker stops by the crab shed to catch up with Jeff about life. He showed up early and guys start off talking about work, school, and what's cool on TikTok while Jeff finishes setting up the recording equipment. Our interview is cut short when an unexpected attack occurs just outside the studio and Cody has to leave early to take care of an issue that could not be ignored. In the latter half of the episode, Jeff explains what happened all of the commotion was about, and we get a few teaser clips from the next few episodes coming out over the next month. This week's episode is a good reminder that we can always work on remaining flexible and adaptive. We never know what random obstacles are going to present themselves and we have to be prepared to make changes on the fly. This episode almost didn't happen.
