This trade war with Canada is not the first. Forty-five years ago, Maine potato farmers piled rotten potatoes at their state's borders with New Brunswick. Blocking nine crossings, the Mainers accused Canada of unfairly subsidizing its potato growers, thus driving down the prices they could get. The Maine potato industry had problems other than Canada, namely poor soil management and competition from a place called Idaho. To the growers' great hurt, lobster joints in the tourist meccas along the Atlantic Coast were posting signs that read, “Maine lobsters, Idaho potatoes.” They seemed unaware that their own state was a major...Article Link

A half century after the United States won its independence from Britain, Canada was rocked by two armed uprising known as the Rebellions of 1837-38.The revolts failed, resulting in many rebels being deported to Australia and Tasmania as political prisoners facing hard labor or hanging. Others escaped such reprisals by going into exile in the US. Sympathy for these disenfranchised French Canadian patriots was the subject of a song written four years later by a young college student named Antoine Gérin-Lajoie.How the Song Came to BeYears later in his memoir Souvenirs de collège, Gérin-Lajoie told how he adapted his lyrics to the deeply expressive French-Canadian folk tune "J'ai fait une maîtresse" (of which "Si tu te mets anguille" is also a variation). “I wrote that song in 1842 when I was in Rhetoric Class in Nicolet, Quebec. I wrote it one night in bed at the request of my friend Cyp Pinard.”Gérin-Lajoie's verses to “Un Canadien Errant” were published in 1844 in the Charivari canadien, and soon the song was being sung by French Canadians across the country — from Acadia on the east coast to the distant reaches of the northwest territories — stirred by how the lyrics captured the deep sadness of exile. Un Canadien errant, A wandering Canadian, Banni de ses foyers, Banished from his homeland, Parcourait en pleurant Traveled, weeping, Des pays étrangers. Through foreign lands. "Si tu vois mon pays, "If you should see my home, Mon pays malheureux, My sad unhappy land, Va dis à mes amis Go say to all my friends Que je me souviens d'eux.” That I remember them.”The Acadian ConnectionLater Acadians also adopted the song as their own — changing its first line to “Un Acadien Errant” — in the context of the Acadian deportation. Between 1749 and 1755, many Acadians who had refused to swear allegiance to the British Crown emigrated to Lower Acadia or Cape Breton. Then, fearing that they might join the French during the coming Seven Years' War, Nova Scotia Governor Charles Lawrence deported the Acadians to New England and the Atlantic Coast. Cajuns of the Louisiana bayou country also trace their own ancestry to these same exiles.Twentieth Century PerformancesBack to song, Paul Robeson recorded a bilingual version in 1950 under the title "Le Canadien Errant.” However, most Americans learned the tune a decade after that with a French-language performance by Ian & Sylvia, who included it on their debut 1962 album for Vanguard Records. The duo gave the song further prominence at the Newport Folk Festival as recorded on the 1996 album Ian & Sylvia Live at Newport. In the 1969 film My Side of the Mountain, folk singer/musicologist Theodore Bikel sang the first part of "Un Canadien Errant" and then played a bit of it on a "homemade" reed flute. The melody refrained throughout the film. Leonard Cohen recorded "Un Canadien Errant" as "The Lost Canadian" on his 1979 Recent Songs album, and his own song "The Faith," on his 2004 album Dear Heather, is based on the same melody. Our Take on the TuneThirty years ago, when The Flood first started doing this song, the band was back to being a trio of the original guys — Dave Peyton, Joe Dobbs and Charlie Bowen — and often on rehearsal night, the only listener in the room would be Dave's beautiful wife, Susan. At the end of the evening, when the guys asked Susie what last song of the evening she'd like to hear, it was almost always this sweet, sad tune that she remembered hearing 20 years earlier down in Louisiana when she and David and young Davy spent an autumn and winter in Cajun country. We lost Susan three years ago this summer. This one's for you, dear heart. This is a public episode. He has written or collaborated on more than sixty books. In this promising true crime story of big tech combatting human trade by Noel Thomas and Rob Suggs, Dark Traffic ushers the public into the next phase of anti-trafficking efforts to stop what has evolved into a 150 billion dollar industry involving a complex network of organized crime trafficking sex, labor, and human organs. It has become an all too prevalent and pervasive presence with a world wide grip reaching out to seize the vulnerable, powerless, and marginalized through the Internet and the dark web. Not your average book on trafficking—this is an exclusive look at the side of human trafficking you've never known, and how technology is being used to fight the war. Because the game has changed, and we must change with it. As co-founder and CEO of Dark Watch, author Noel Thomas has led United States law enforcement and the judicial system onto the new battleground, where high-tech data analysis is changing how criminals are caught and prosecuted. Offering an insider's view on the battle, Dark Traffic is Noel Thomas's plea to a public primarily unaware of the destruction and close proximity of trafficking, seeking to pull back the curtain of what's happening in our own backyards and ignite a righteous anger that calls readers to step up, learn more, and do more. “This book was written to bridge the information gap,” Thomas writes, “and, consequently, the outage gap. Lives are destroyed in large numbers, and we need to raise an army of awareness and determination to fight this enemy who is thriving in the shadows of our culture.” More than just a report from the battlefield, Dark Traffic is an urgent call for more people to join in the fight.Find out more about Dark Watch - https://darkwatch.io/Dark Traffic can be purchased wherever you find get books.

At this time of year it is shrouded in a fine sea mist. About midway along the beach a colony of shearwaters takes flight as they eye our arrival. It is only when we are closer to where they were gathered that we see a large common dolphin lying dead, mouth agape in a jovial toothy smile. Later, further along the beach, we spotted another dolphin lying with the familiar grimace, covered in flies, rotting on the shore. This one, smaller in size, had been dead longer.“There are days with one dead dolphin, other days with nine.”Mónica González - Galician Stranding Network (CEMMA)

Opposes trail structures in the Hudson River At a Jan. 14 public hearing on the state environmental review of the proposed Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, the environmental group Riverkeeper shared concerns over the plans and suggested alternatives. Mike Dulong, the watchdog's legal program director, said the organization is concerned that the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (DGEIS) dismisses the impact of construction and shading that the trail could create and asked HHFT to avoid placing structures in or over the water. The remote hearing, which drew 258 people over two sessions, was hosted by the state parks department, the lead agency for the environmental review. Dulong said Riverkeeper, as a member of the HHFT Steering Committee, supported the Fjord Trail and its goals to increase public safety along Route 9D while providing opportunities for outdoor recreation, nature appreciation and education. He said many of the potential environmental impacts Riverkeeper identified could be avoided depending on the chosen route. As proposed, the 7.5-mile Fjord Trail would link Cold Spring, Breakneck Ridge and Beacon. HHFT's preferred southern route would include two half-mile sections over the river, one running south from Breakneck and the other from Dockside Park in Cold Spring to Little Stony Point. According to the plans, the construction would include 149 piles and 1,920 cubic yards of fill, which Riverkeeper fears will endanger shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon. Read Riverkeeper's Full Statement Dulong said HHFT's assertion that the shoreline in those sections is not within the sturgeon's preferred habitat is incorrect. He said the DGEIS correctly states that the area from Denning's Point in Beacon to Little Stony Point is designated as a "significant coastal fish and wildlife habitat" for sturgeon, adding that the state Department of Environmental Conservation describes it as "critical habitat for most estuarine-dependent fisheries originating from the Hudson River" because it "contributes directly to the production of in-river and ocean populations of food, game and forage fish species." The two in-river trail sections would require about 18 months to construct, according to HHFT. The shading, hydrological impacts on the shoreline and impacts on the ecosystem would also indirectly impact sturgeon, Dulong said. In its comments, Riverkeeper also called for making wetland protection a priority in the northern section, where HHFT is considering two routes. It advocated avoiding a route that would include a boardwalk over a freshwater wetland south of Fishkill Creek that provides habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the eastern box turtle, spotted turtle, eastern hognose snake and pied-billed grebe. Dulong said the possible presence of the Atlantic Coast leopard frog, which he said the DEC may add to its list of endangered species, should be considered. The group prefers the other proposed route, which it said could leave freshwater wetlands largely intact, although it requires further study. Riverkeeper also objected to plans to add 22 acres of impervious or semipervious areas along the trail route, arguing that stormwater runoff from surfaces such as parking lots could increase contaminants entering the river and wetlands. Riverkeeper said it wants to see "minimal or no new impervious surfaces." The group also spoke against expanding the Washburn parking lot opposite Little Stony Point, which it said is a potential habitat for the eastern fence lizard. Dulong said Riverkeeper's comments at the public hearing were abridged, and its review of the DGEIS will continue. The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is all that flash, but after testing it this week, we think consumers will really respond to its combination of versatility, fun-to-drive, and incredible fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency says it has a range of more than 600 miles on a tankful of gas. At the same time, Host Jack Nerad found it delivered excellent performance with more brio than you might expect. With a fresh design and a shift to hybrid-only powertrains, it now offers two hybrid configurations: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. We tested the 225-horsepower front-drive version and found that its acceleration more than met expectations. There's just something about electric motors' instant torque. Nerad will have a full report. More than 2,000 miles away, Co-Host Chris Teague was putting the battery-electric Volvo C40 Recharge through his test regimen. There is something perfect about the combination of fall colors, the Atlantic Coast, and the Volvo C40 recharge, and Teague will give us his conclusions. In the news this week, with somewhat curious timing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally opened an official investigation into Tesla and its Full Self-Driving software after years of studying the issue. Hmmm. What has changed? At the same time, Dodge assures us that the Hemi-V8 isn't dead yet. Despite its recent troubles, it has just proven this by introducing an all-new Durango SRT special edition. Sorry, potential car buyers — the prime interest rate is down, but car affordability remains a big challenge, according to a just-released report from Cox Automotive/Moody's Analytics. Implied gasoline use fell 5% on the week.US ethanol production increased 5 millin gallons to 318 million gallons on the week- compared to 305 million gallons last year and 283 million gallons in 2022. Ethanol profitability remains supportive of relatively high crush margins. The September WASDE Report showed a larger US corn yield at 183.6 bushels per acre, a higher sorghum yield at 57.4 bushels per acre, a lower cotton yield at 807 pounds per acre, lower rice yield at 7,588 pounds per acre, and flat soybean and wheat yields at 53.2 and 52.2 bushels per acre, respectively. Global soybean stocks continue to be burdensome.Open interest in Chicago commodities was down for wheats (-3.8%) and soybean meal (-0.8%), while up for corn (+0.6%), soybean (+1.7%), soybean oil (+1.0%), cotton (+1.3%), and rough rice (2.5%).Money managers were net buyers of Chicago wheats (+21,954 contracts), corn (+44,077 contracts), soybeans (+23,495 contracts), soybean meal (+13,877 contracts), and rough rice (+376). They were net sellers of soybean oil (-90 contracts) and cotton (-6,827).The new marketing year has started for corn, grain sorghum and soybeans with export sales for the first week of the marketing year reported at 26.2, 2.8 and 54.2 million bushels, respectively. Maybe most notable in the data were US soybean export sales to Argentina.US Crop Conditions:There are some chances of precipitation across the country this coming weekend and in the Atlantic Coast states, but unfortunately the broader region remains hotter than normal. The corn crop seems to be getting bigger as harvest rolls along. The lack of precipitation and hotter than normal temperatures had many thinking that weekly corn conditions ratings would deteriorate on the week. Instead corn ratings increased one percentage point. It is likely that producers are finding yields on their yield monitors and the conversation has influenced condition's reporters that the crop is better than originally reported. This is bearish to the corn market in the short run.US grain and oilseed export inspections were neutral. Corn shipments of 26.5, grain sorghum shipments of 2.6, and soybean shipments of 14.7 million bushels were all within expectations but below recent volumes. Wheat shipments of 20.5 million bushels were slightly higher than recent volumes. The National Oilseed Processors Association reported their members crushed 158.0 million bushels of soybeans in August- well below all trade estimates and the lowest monthly volume since September 2021.US corn conditions ratings were 1 percentage point higher on the week to 65% good to excellent when the expectation was for a 1 percentage point decline. Corn harvest is 9% completed compared to 5% this time last year.US soybean conditions rating was 1 point lower- matching expectations. Soybean harvest is 6% complete as of Sunday.Topics:» Market recap» September crop supply and demand» Soybean crush drops to three-year low» Managing an operation during low prices» Federal Reserve to meet over interest rates» Reports to watchConnect with Brownfield Ag News:» Get the latest ag news: https://www.brownfieldagnews.com/» Subscribe to Brownfield on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BrownfieldAgNews» Follow Brownfield on X (Twitter): https://x.com/brownfield» Follow Brownfield on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrownfieldAgNewsAbout Brownfield Ag News:Brownfield Ag News is your trusted source for reliable agriculture news, market trends, weather updates, and expert interviews. From its conception by Mayor Brantley Harris, inspired by the grand beaches of the Atlantic Coast, to its development with the help of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration, Stewart Beach has experienced pivotal moments that shaped it into an iconic park. Overcoming racial segregation in the 1960s and implementing family-friendly policies in the 1980s, Stewart Beach evolved into a premier destination with attractions like roller skating rinks, dance floors, and beach volleyball courts. Despite changing recreational trends, it remains a cherished spot with essential amenities and a rich history, making it a point of pride for the Galveston community.Galveston Unscripted What is Galveston Unscripted?Follow Galveston Unscripted on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! Chris Bowser is a professional educator and environmental scientist with experience in citizen science, estuary and river monitoring, conservation biology, and fisheries science. Part of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, he coordinates a team with NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program and Hudson River Estuarine Research Reserve. He joins the Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley team with a passionate discussion about the Hudson River Estuary. An estuary is defined as the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream. If you think of New York's Hudson River, this covers a lot of territory. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, estuaries are among the most productive of Earth's ecosystems. Native Americans discovered the Hudson's bounty thousands of years ago; evidence of their existence remains in heaps of oyster shells on its shores. Hudson and Dutch traders wrote of a river teeming with striped bass, herring, and giant sturgeon. More than 200 species of fish are found in the Hudson and its tributaries. The estuary's productivity is ecologically and economically valuable to much of the Atlantic Coast; key commercial and recreational species like striped bass, bluefish, and blue crab depend on nursery habitat here. Bald eagles, herons, waterfowl, and other birds feed from the river's bounty. Tidal marshes, mudflats, and other significant habitats in and along the estuary support a great diversity of life. The Hudson River Estuary has one of the largest concentrations of freshwater wetlands in the northeastern part of the United States. It has also been found that due to climate change, the rising sea levels have led to an increase in the area of the wetlands. Chris brings the Hudson River to ‘life' not only talking about what can be found within it, but also about the wide range of programs to adults and children to help everyone become more acquainted with its value to our broader ecosystem. The administrative and financial costs of disaster recovery have increased in recent years, exacerbated by the changing climate. The 122 separate billion-dollar disasters occurring between 2016 and 2022 in the U.S. represented more than $1 trillion in damages and claimed 5,000 lives. A significant portion of that expense was incurred by seven Category 4 and 5 hurricanes that made landfall in the Ten Across region or along the Atlantic Coast.  Yet this figure doesn't begin to encapsulate the full range of climate-related losses in the U.S., nor the less visible but steadily accumulating costs of adapting infrastructure to withstand more frequent and destructive weather events.   Federal legislation has moved toward addressing these potential risks to the built enviornment, human health, and the economy. The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act represent the largest surge in climate action funding in U.S. history. Combined, they account for a trillion dollars of investments over ten years. The funding incentivizes all sectors to build climate security by scaling up the clean energy economy and redressing environmental and economic injustices, past and present.    Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Xavier de Souza Briggs, a senior fellow at Brookings Metro and member of the Biden-Harris transition team, discuss the strategy behind these dollars and what gaps remain to be addressed to ensure greater climate resilience and equity within this corridor and the nation.  Articles/sources referenced in this podcast:  “Community Development in the Critical Climate Decade” (Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2024, Briggs and Donovan)  “America is witnessing the birth of a new industrial policy. Mike's going to shed some light on the important work ASA is doing for the recreational fishing industry, and he'll discuss some pressing issues that anglers should be aware of and take action on. ASA might not be the most well-known organization in the recreational fishing community, but it certainly plays a crucial role behind the scenes. Mike gives us an inside look at the work they do and how it impacts all of us who love getting out on the water with a rod and reel. The episode covers some very eye-opening topics, including regulations affecting fishing access and conservation, as well as potential threats to fishing traditions. Mike highlights a significant issue with right whales along the Atlantic Coast that could severely impact offshore fishing, and he shares some shocking developments in other countries like Germany and Colombia that have banned catch and release fishing. But it's not all doom and gloom! Mike shares valuable insights on how anglers can get involved and make a difference. Whether it's signing up for the Keep America Fishing program, engaging with local fishing organizations, or simply staying informed about crucial bills in Congress, there's something everyone can do to help protect our beloved pastime. This episode is an important wake-up call for anglers everywhere. So, take some time to listen to what Mike has to say, then head to asafishing.org to find out how you can get involved and help protect the future of recreational fishing. Don't miss out! TIP: Top Academics punches your ticket to the dance. Impact Leadership gets you admitted. TALE: When you take a look at the March Madness brackets for the NCAA Men's and Women's tournament, you learn that they ALL have winning records. These are the AQs: Academic Qualities. They are the best in their athletic conference, be it Pac 12, Big 10, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, etc. Their stats and overall winning records earned them a ticket to the “dance.” Was it a fluke that #13 seed Yale Men's team beat #4 seed Auburn? Or that #14 seed Oakland Men's team beat #3 seed Kentucky (with 8 National titles)? How about my Lady Trojans headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years and will face the Baylor Bears who have 3 national titles under their belt? NO. These are the best teams around the country, and each comes with the “goods” of what it takes to win. So what is the difference? How a team shows leadership, endurance, and teamwork throughout the game is critical. Their preparation, work ethic, dedication, commitment, and longevity are paramount. The intangibles such as, passion, grit, belief, and how a team succeeds under pressure and adversity, are without a doubt instrumental to winning any game. These are the PQs, Personal Qualities of a team. TRUTH: When applying to college, every student shows up with the same “numbers,” high school GPA, test scores, and a transcript to show the rigor of the courses you chose. These “stats” are YOUR AQs. Despite the quick removal following criticisms, Target has shed a reported $9 billion from its market capitalization. Now that consumers have pushed-back against Bud Light and Target for adopting far-left ideologies in their advertising campaigns, will other companies hesitate before becoming overtly political? According to a report from Newsbusters, CNN and MSNBC mentioned Donald Trump nearly 400 times in 10 hours on Thursday. Congressman Jeff Van Drew—Republican representing New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the drastic uptick in marine wildlife deaths along the Atlantic Coast. Many environmental experts believe this is linked to offshore wind development's usage of sonar to map the ocean's floor which prevents whales, for example, from communicating with one another and inhibits accurate navigation.
