As we mark Domestic Violence Awareness month this October, we know there's a long way to go when it comes to addressing the domestic violence crisis in our country. From pandemic-era spikes in violence to the Trump administration's recent budget cuts and their impact on support for women and girls experiencing domestic violence, how are advocates and policy experts addressing the ongoing crisis? Helping us to sort out these questions and set the record straight are our very special guests, Lauren Schuster: Lauren Schuster is the VP of Government Affairs at Urban Resource Institute. Schuster joined Urban Resource Institute after serving as Chief of Staff to Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan) for more than 11 years. Before that, she worked at the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) in a variety of roles of increasing responsibility, including Staff Attorney, Environmental Campaign Coordinator and Voting Empowerment Project Coordinator. She received her Juris Doctorate from St. John's University School of Law and graduated from New York University's College of the Arts and Sciences, with a BA in political science.Chris Negri: Chris Negri is the Associate Director of Public Policy at the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. At the Partnership, he works on funding and on an array of other issues, from tech to child welfare, representing the interests of more than 100 domestic violence agencies and the survivors they serve. Prior to joining the Partnership, Chris served as Program Director at Equality California Institute. Chris holds a BA in History from UC Riverside, an MA in Special Education from Loyola Marymount, and an MPP from the University of Southern California. Check out this episode's landing page at MsMagazine.com for a full transcript, links to articles referenced in this episode, further reading and ways to take action.Support the show

Live show! Thurs, Oct 23 at The Burren, Davis Square, Somerville, MassOctober is Domestic Violence Awareness month. We should be talking about domestic violence, and how to prevent it, all the time, to help others recognize what it is and how insidious that it can be. It is not just bruises and black eyes. Jennifer Martel's case is like so many other women who were tied to a bad relationship through a shared child. Few people seemed to know what Jennifer was really going through at home. There were many reasons why leaving was so difficult. The Murder of Jennifer Martel, Waltham, MassachusettsIt is like so many other women's stories who were trying to see a way out. It is like so many other stories where the victim is lost in the headlines of the case. What it is not like is how she was murdered by a very dangerous man who had been dangerous for a long time. He was someone she was and had been with for years. The man who was the son of a beloved voice of Red Sox Nation, Jerry Remy, the "RemDog." Fenway Park is like church around here. There is a lot of hero worship. Jennifer Martel was 27 when she was murdered. She had a plan for the next phase of her life, a next phase that did not include Jared Remy. Just two days before Jennifer was killed, Remy was arrested for slamming her head into a bathroom mirror. She called to report him — the audio from the 911 call says it all — and Remy was arrested and charged with assault and battery. Jennifer was granted an emergency restraining order that night, and she would be able to extend it the following day, Wednesday, August 14, at Remy's arraignment in Waltham District Court. However, Jennifer did not appear in court and the restraining order expired. Something that would prove to be a grave error on the prosecutors' part is that no one had the foresight to look at his background. No one checked priors. If they had, they would have seen a long history of violence against women. Instead, they sought no bail, and he was released on personal recognizance on an open assault and battery case.It is important to understand why Jennifer didn't attend that arraignment the day before she was stabbed to death in the presence of her 4-year-old and her next door neighbors. History is well documented as to why many women don't appear in abuse cases like this – for fear of retribution, more abuse, how they can support themselves and their children, the pleas of the partner, and, in Jennifer's case, from the Remys. Patty Martel said Jennifer heard from Remy's mother, Phoebe, who begged her not to file a complaint because it would ruin Remy's life. His life. Mrs. Remy, according to the Martels, said they would protect her. Maybe Mrs. Remy believed what she was saying, but her son's history of violence was crystal clear.National Domestic Violence Hotline | thehotline.org | Call 1.800.799.SAFE (7233)Jane Doe Inc | janedoe.org | Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic ViolenceCrime of the Truest Kind | Follow @crimeofthetruestkindOnline: CrimeoftheTruestKind.com Follow: @crimeofthetruestkind Support: patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkind Created, written, hosted by Anngelle Wood#MassachusettsTrueCrime #NewEngland #TrueCrime #Storytelling #CrimeHistory #Advocacy #Podcast #ColdCases #Unsolved #Missing #Society #AnngelleWood Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Indie Artist Music Hustle with Blonde Intelligence. I am your host Ms. Roni and I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. Karma works in mysterious ways. When Rashida Frost publicly dismissed K Michelle's domestic violence allegations on Love & Hip Hop Atlanta years ago, she couldn't have known that her own family would face a similar tragedy. The universe's scales of justice sometimes balance in unexpected and painful ways. This episode explores the complex intersection of reality TV drama and real-world consequences through the lens of the Frost family's current situation. We dive deep into how one woman's refusal to believe another's trauma has eerily manifested in her own life during what spiritual practitioners call the "Liongate portal" - when past wrongs resurface seeking resolution.Beyond celebrity drama, we examine the devastating ripple effects domestic violence creates through families, friend circles, and communities. Drawing from professional counseling experience, I unpack how witnessing abuse creates profound emotional burdens, especially for children who absorb this trauma in ways that can impact their entire lives. The painful truth is that domestic violence rarely stays contained between two people - it fractures support networks, creates impossible choices, and often ends in tragedy. The discussion extends to how enabling behaviors from family members through denial or minimization creates environments where victims feel trapped. Video evidence showed multiple abuse incidents involving Kelsey, suggesting countless more occurred off-camera. When victims say "I don't involve others because I know I'll go back," they're revealing the complex psychology of abuse cycles that frustrates those who want to help. What happens when we dismiss victims' experiences to protect relationships with perpetrators? This episode suggests the universe eventually provides painful opportunities for growth and transformation. By facing the consequences of previous inaction, we might emerge more empathetic, understanding, and committed to breaking cycles of violence in our communities.Subscribe to Indie Artist Music Hustle for more thought-provoking discussions on culture, music, and the cosmic balance of justice. Domestic violence affects millions of people in the United States, regardless of ethnicity or gender, and can take on the form of mental, physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse. Myths like “it's easy to leave” or “it only happens to certain people” add layers of stigma and make it harder for survivors to speak up, get help, or leave. What are the critical signs we should recognize to better support those affected? And what kind of help can survivors expect from existing resources? In this special episode, we sat down with Lyndsey Dearlove, global director of operations at NO MORE, who highlights the widespread impact of domestic violence and shares essential tools and resources. We then spoke with Denise Murray, senior manager at the National Domestic Violence Hotline, about the critical support that the hotline provides, including what to expect when you call and the trauma-informed approach they take to empowering survivors. Domestic abuse is an unfortunate reality for far too many people. Many people will flee a bad situation with no real plan for the future beyond surviving.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and today we speak with Angela, a survivor, and Patti Slaughter, the Founder and Executive Director of  The Bernie House. This is a heartbreaking episode, and if there is one thing you need to take away from it, it is the fact that 4 out of 10 women have been a victim of domestic violence. Take a moment and think about that. Named for Patti's father and his legacy of caring, The Bernie House (or houses) is a place for families to live in a true home while they get back on track. Victims of domestic violence will typically flee their situation after seven incidents, but shelters are only a temporary solution. The Bernie House is what comes next! During their stay, resources for education, employment, and life skills are made available. At the end of their stay, all the contents of their home are left with them. Truly, this is an amazing organization that defines the phrase "small but mighty." Unfortunately, the need is greater than the resources. The Bernie House is working on a third home, and Angela is working with the State Legislature to make domestic violence a crime--currently, it is not! Today's story is of one powerful woman who escaped with her daughter and another powerful one who is helping her out! Have a listen! Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell return to the Mica Francis case and to March 23, 2018 … the day of Mica's alleged first attempt at suicide.... Medical records from that day say her husband — pastor JP Miller — called one of Mica's mental health providers at 10 a.m. to say that Mica had stolen JP's credit card, snuck out of the house while he was sleeping, gone ot Dick's Pawn Shop that morning, purchased a gun, received a lesson on how to use it and then tried shooting herself in their front yard. And, like with most everything else in this case, JP's account contains inconsistencies, contradictions and raises a lot of questions. Such as could Mica have done all of that in less than an hour?  Mandy and Liz talk about that and what else is contained in the medical records from that day. Also on the show, an update on the Nautilus case — WILL ALEX MURDAUGH AND CORY FLEMING BE REUNITED?!?  Plus, Alex finally settled the Mallory Beach boat crash civil liability case and an update on the Beach family's second civil conspiracy case and their request for a judge to step down.  Finally, October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and … we're all aware. Now is the time for meaningful change, starting with South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson who needs to trade his photo ops with paper dolls for actual action in the courtroom … starting with getting a trial date for the Sara Lynn Colucci case.  Episode Resources “SC AG honors fallen victims of domestic violence” article Law & Crime's article on Christa Gilley's murder PRESS Act FAQ's H.R.4250 - PRESS Act NewsNation Interview with JP Miller Stay Tuned, Stay Pesky and Stay in the Sunlight...☀️ Join Luna Shark Premium today at Lunashark.Supercast.com. Laurie McGraw is speaking with Inspiring Woman Rebecca Darr, CEO of Wings, the largest organization in Illinois focused on breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Wings provides housing, integrated services, education and advocacy to end domestic violence with tremendous success when people seek help. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The definition of domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. And you may be surprised to know how prevalent it is. Every minute 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. That's over 12 million people every year. In Chicago alone, the police receive 500 calls per day regarding domestic violence. Further, over 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic violence does not discriminate and begins with a power imbalance. Rebecca discusses the stark reality of what it means to get out of an abusive situation and then how Wings can help. Rebecca has been doing this work for decades and became CEO of Wings in 2014. When people come to Wings for help – they receive it. Housing, counseling, and more. This Inspiring Woman discussion with Rebecca is filled with hard to hear statistics, very real human stories and an inspiring message of hope. Breaking the domestic violence cycle is the objective and after all of these years, Rebecca remains committed to expanding the programs and impact at Wings. About Rebecca: Rebecca Darr is a tireless advocate for families confronting domestic violence. Darr was named CEO of WINGS in 2014, after serving as the agency's executive director for 15 years. Under Darr's leadership, WINGS has dramatically increased its ability to serve the needs of families in crisis because of domestic violence. The agency has tripled in size and secured new funding sources, including three resale stores that generate revenue to support WINGS' programs. Darr led the WINGS team in building the first domestic violence shelter in Chicago's northwest suburbs in 2005. This shelter has since helped thousands of women and children move from abuse to freedom. She also played a key role in the 2016 opening of the WINGS Metro shelter on Chicago's southwest side. Darr is closely involved with numerous organizations and task forces committed to leading the fight to enact stronger legislation and to secure increased resources to combat domestic violence. These include the Cook County Commission on Women's Issues, the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic Violence. Darr is a sought-after speaker and expert on domestic violence issues and on programs that can break the cycle in families. Given my background working extensively on gun rights, mental health, and criminal justice reform, it was a debate I was excited to join and actually find "middle ground" on - the title of the series. But unlike my first debate appearance with them, this time Jubilee's production attempted to pull a seat up in the debate and join the argument in the editing process. They included numerous stats and "fact checks" that were either completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, or even worse, were studies with such bad methodologies they've become a running joke. Honestly, if their producers wanted to debate me...I would have been happy to do so. But this was a cheap trick - and since so many Americans are never taught how to actually read data, it seems many in their audience are falling for their attempt to discredit very solid statistics. So join me as I yet again have to fact check the fact checkers in this behind the scenes reaction to the final product.
