The next big advertising opportunity is here. The audio systems in Dollar General's 21,000 stores connect shoppers with advertisers and drive loyalty. Austin Leonard, VP and GM of Dollar General Media Network (DGMN), sits down with Phillip and Alicia to explain why the retailer has doubled down on audio and the role that non-endemic advertisers play in his long-term vision. “The Cocktail Party Effect” Key takeaways: In-store audio is getting programmatic optimization so DG's sponsors can serve ads at the best time of day and in the best-suited markets. Non-endemic only works in-store if it clears the near-endemic bar: shopper relevance. Dollar General's 21,000 stores across suburban, urban, and rural markets are often the only stores in town, making its ad inventory a community utility. The Yellow Glasses Project pairs brand partners with the DG Literacy Foundation via iHeartRadio. [00:18:10] Phillip: "This is the power that I think audio has that nothing else has; it can catch your attention even when you're focused on something else." [00:32:40] Austin Leonard: "I call that the last mile of eCommerce for the last mile of America." [00:36:15] Austin Leonard: "The next era of retail media is really about accountability and also telling our story for our unique audiences." Have you ever finished dealing with something in your business and thought, "Whew, good thing I caught that"? Maybe something almost got missed, you had to step in at the last minute, or you found yourself figuring out how to make something work once again. You handled it, everything worked out, and you kept moving because that's what we do as business owners. Being able to figure things out is a skill, especially when you're building a business and working with what you have. Resourcefulness can take you pretty far. The challenge comes when you've gotten so good at figuring things out that you don't notice how often your business needs you to do it. A business can look like it's working while requiring a whole lot from you behind the scenes to keep it that way. You may still be checking on things you thought you handed off, dealing with an issue that feels a little too familiar, or trying to make the numbers work for another month. You handle it each time, but eventually, it's worth paying attention to what keeps bringing you back to the same place. This episode of the Black to Business podcast gets into what happens when saving the day starts becoming a regular part of running your business. We're talking about the patterns that can be easy to miss when you're busy handling what's in front of you, what those patterns can show you about your business, and how to start making changes that don't always require more from you. DURING THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN: How to recognize when your resourcefulness has turned into constantly rescuing the business What your financial patterns may be telling you beyond needing more sales How to know when a problem needs more than another quick fix How to make better decisions about what actually needs to change Where to start when several things in your business could use your attention   Thank you so much for listening! Training doesn't end when learners leave the classroom. Tamara Palmer and Chris Byerly of Flagger Force, a leading short-term traffic control company, discuss how they blend communications, microlearning, and audience-centered messaging to keep critical safety information top of mind for a dispersed frontline workforce. Show Notes: Tamara Palmer and Chris Byerly share a practical framework for organizations with dispersed or frontline workforces to make training more effective by treating communication as an extension of learning. Their key takeaways include:Reinforcement is where learning becomes performance. People forget up to 80–90% of what they learn within a month. Palmer explains how Flagger Force uses mobile microlearning to reinforce classroom training with short, focused lessons that reach employees wherever they work.Treat training like an internal marketing campaign. Byerly argues that simply publishing training isn't enough. Organizations need healthy communication channels that employees actually value, then market learning through messaging that captures attention and builds engagement.Different audiences need different messages. Rather than sending everyone the same communication, Palmer shares her "balanced storytelling framework," tailoring messages for office staff, field leaders, and frontline workers based on each group's responsibilities and information needs.Understanding people is a strategic advantage. Drawing on employee research, Byerly explains why understanding the motivations, challenges, and needs of frontline workers leads to stronger communication, better learning, and higher engagement.Measure more than clicks. Open rates matter, but they're only the beginning. Palmer discusses using employee questions, microlearning performance, engagement data, and long-term safety outcomes to determine whether learning and communication efforts are actually changing behavior.Listen to this Powered by Learning episode featuring Flagger Force:Microlearning that Drives a Culture of SafetyAbout Chris Byerly Chris Byerly is Associate Vice President of Strategy at Flagger Force, where he leads cross-functional growth and transformation initiatives connecting brand, technology, people, and enterprise strategy. Phillip sits solo to unpack conflicting economic signals: Shopify's monster quarter against a Census report showing eCommerce eating share while retail overall slows. What does this mean for brick-and-mortar? Although stores still make up most retail sales, their mission and value have shifted. The good has become secondary to the experience of acquiring it. Plus, he breaks down why the monoculture returned in a summer of shared events, and what's on the FC docket through November 3rd. The Monoculture Isn't Dead, It's On Substack Key takeaways: Commerce is growing (online sales grew at nearly twice retail's pace in 2025), but it's growing by disappearing into everything else. The product itself is secondary to the experience of purchasing it. The monoculture isn't dead; it's been revived by sport, tours, and global events. "There is a monoculture now of people writing about the summer of the monoculture on their Substack." "You're not just communicating your vision anymore to the human capital within your business; you now have to communicate vision to machines and put it into machine language. Wilson Zehr is an entrepreneur, academic and marketing strategist with more than 25 years in technology and telecommunications behind him, across six large-scale startups and over $60 million raised in venture funding. He runs Zairmail, a platform that automates the production and delivery of physical mail, and he teaches marketing, entrepreneurship and business strategy as an assistant professor at Eastern Oregon University, where he launched the Entrepreneurship Club to support student founders. Key Discussion Themes: • From compilers to executive leadership, five or six years as a software engineer, then marketing, business development and the corner office across six startups • Why moving into marketing broke his relationship with the to-do list, and how he learned to choose who was going to be disappointed each week • A CEO's world can change between eight and ten in the morning, which is why Monday cannot decide what Thursday looks like • Wilson's strategic planning theory, that what you can do today depends on resources you put in place months or years ago, and the youth football version of the same idea • Inside Zairmail, higher-volume mailers running 10,000 to 50,000 pieces a few times a week, 0% planned downtime, and routing mail electronically before it becomes physical • The 70/20/10 formula for direct response, 70% list, 20% offer, 10% creative, and why data has a shelf life • Referrals as the quiet engine behind most new business, even alongside a weekly newsletter going to 280,000 small and medium businesses • The airplane oxygen mask and the lifeguard rule, two versions of the same advice about protecting your own capacity Listener Takeaway: The list will always be longer than the day, so the real work is deciding what gets your finite time. Protecting your own capacity is not selfishness. It is what lets you keep being useful to the people counting on you. I'm Niall Mackay, founder of Seven Million Bikes Podcasts, where my team and I build shows for businesses around the world. In this one, I break down what actually makes a business podcast worth doing, and it's not the two things most people assume.I wanted to record this because I keep hearing the same assumption from business owners: they think a podcast is only worth starting if it gets big downloads or lands a sponsor. So instead, I went through what actually pays off week after week, the kind of value that never shows up on a stats screen but ends up mattering far more.Key TakeawaysYou Get Sharper at Your Own Business: Explaining what you do out loud, every week, forces a clarity that a strategy session rarely produces. That Clarity Spreads Everywhere: Sales calls, marketing copy, and investor pitches all get easier once you've said your story a hundred times.Doors Open You Can't Plan For: Relationships, referrals, and opportunities show up as a byproduct of consistency, not something you can chase directly.Downloads and Sponsors Aren't the Point: They're the easiest things to measure, which is exactly why people fixate on them, and exactly why they're the wrong focus. The Real Benefits Take Patience: Most hosts quit right before clarity and unexpected opportunity start to compound.Chapters and Timestamps00:00 – What most people get wrong about the benefits of a business podcast00:02 – Getting sharper at explaining your own business00:05 – Doors opening you could never have planned for00:09 – What's missing from the list: downloads and sponsors00:13 – Why this matters if you're deciding whether to start one00:15 – Closing thoughts and how to work with usSend us Fan MailBook a free call with me here to help you create the best podcast possible!

The longer you run your business, the easier it is to get used to how things work. A process that was supposed to be temporary becomes the way you've done things for three years. Customers keep asking the same question, but the answer feels obvious to you. Something you do really well barely stands out anymore because you've done it so many times. Eventually, certain parts of the business can become so familiar that you stop noticing them. This episode of the Black to Business podcast is about taking a fresh look at what has become normal inside your business. Monique breaks down how familiarity can keep you from questioning things that may no longer make sense, recognizing what other people find confusing, and even seeing some of the things your business does exceptionally well. You'll also learn how customers, new team members, contractors, and other people with a fresh perspective can help you notice what you may be too close to see yourself. DURING THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: Why "that's just how we do it" may be worth questioning How your own knowledge can cause you to fill in information your customers don't have Why something can feel easy simply because you've gotten really good at doing it How you may be overlooking some of the most valuable parts of your business What repeated questions, compliments, and feedback can reveal about what you've stopped noticing How to use a fresh perspective to see your business more clearly   Thank you so much for listening! Phillip and Alicia open the back-to-school season with a modern dichotomy: NRF data shows shoppers playing chicken, while Shopify posts a quarter where agentic traffic tripled. PLUS: After a summer abroad in London, Phillip reflects on behaviors unique to U.S. shoppers. Get ‘Em While They're Young Key takeaways: Retailers are manufacturing visible human effort as a hedge against frictionless AI commerce. Play is a form of consumption. Browsing kids are already converting. Back-to-school splits into two camps: early movers and deal holdouts. Shopify's agentic traffic tripled as answer engines are becoming a back-to-school search surface. U.S. share of wallet favors experience, forcing a fusion of retail and hospitality. [00:17:11] Alicia: "When you create these spaces that are conducive to young people, you're kind of creating this magnet moment that ultimately motivates them to shop." [00:28:18] Phillip: "What's really wild about the mini brands thing is…we all complain about shrinkflation, then also buy the mini of something, which is a premiumization of a per-unit cost…We are irrational by nature, and brands would do well to play at both ends of the spectrum." [00:40:17] Alicia: "[Søstrene Grene] almost feels like it's more high-touch because it's kind of imperfect." Learning leaders are often asked to solve performance challenges with more training but that may not be the answer. Kathryn Murrow, Director of Leadership Development and eLearning at the restaurant chain Bojangles, explains why the most effective learning organizations spend more time asking questions than building courses. She shares lessons on collaboration, leadership development, AI, and creating learning experiences that people truly own.Show Notes:Kathryn Murrow of Bojangles talks about the importance of co-creation with learners, diagnosing root causes, and using AI to elevate the role of L&D. Her key takeaways include: Start with the root cause—not the training request. Before building another course, learning leaders should ask what behavior needs to change, why the problem exists, and whether training is actually the right solution.Build learning with your audience, not for them. Involving leaders and frontline employees in designing learning experiences creates stronger buy-in, better content, and more sustainable adoption.Learning succeeds when the conditions are right. Organizations need alignment, clear expectations, leadership support, and the right performance environment before learning initiatives can drive meaningful change. An LMS should be more than a compliance checklist. Kathryn shares how Bojangles is transforming its LMS into a personalized learning hub that connects development opportunities with business outcomes and measurable ROI.AI should create space for more human work. Rather than replacing people, AI can automate administrative tasks so learning professionals can spend more time on coaching, strategy, performance consulting, and measuring impact.Powered by Learning earned Awards of Distinction in the Podcast/Audio and Business Podcast categories from The Communicator Awards and a Gold and Silver Davey Award. MoMA welcomes three million people to its Midtown campus in a good year. But the beloved cultural institution now has the power to reach multiples of that through a hoodie, a Lego set, and a chicken-shaped cutting board. General Manager of Retail, Jesse Goldstine, joins the show to explain how MoMA inverted the museum retail model, how every product in the store thoughtfully ties back to MoMA's art, and where the design institution draws the line between rolling out AI partnerships while protecting human craft.  Until the AI Overlords Say Otherwise Key takeaways: Museums historically have defaulted to funneling visitors through the gift shop last. MoMA inverted the formula, shifting the museum's point-of-entry to retail channels.  Cutting SKUs in SoHo raised productivity per SKU and clarified brand identity. Licensing starts and ends with one question: why MoMA? Discovery and gifting resist automation in ways basic replenishment does not. [00:24:04] Jesse: "The DNA of our business is rooted in decisions made by humans in our curatorial department…I will continue to defer to them and put my faith in them until our AI overlords tell me that I need to behave differently." [00:26:43] Jesse: "There's something really special about our brand that... will sort of inoculate it against some sort of automated sock repurchase every six months." Commerce Media's Day Two: The Agentic Shelf and the Measurement Reckoning

Future Commerce - A Retail Strategy Podcast

Retail media is now a $100 billion industry. Collin Colburn, VP of Commerce and Retail Media at the IAB, says we've entered commerce media's "day two" –  the era where operational integration, interoperable measurement, and the arrival of the agentic shelf matter more than launching another network.  We unpack why brands started calling retail media a tax, why Collin says we should blow attribution up, and whether an ad-supported agent can stay trustworthy. Welcome to Day Two Key takeaways: Optimization and integration replace growth-at-all-costs expansion. Brands call retail media a “tax,” sensing the industry's referee is now incrementality. Agent-referred shoppers convert higher and return less.  In-store media's ceiling is customer experience, not inventory: frequency caps beat non-endemic dollars. [14:05] "Agentic commerce isn't changing what consumers buy or want to buy today. It's changing their pathway to purchase." — Collin Colburn [19:35] “The coming reckoning is in the measurement space.” –– Collin Colburn [20:45] "Attribution was built for: an ad is served, it's clicked on or seen, the customer goes to the website, and they purchase. That model does not work well in this new era." — Collin Colburn [25:15] "AI feels objective to me for the most part… it's like your omnipotent friend that you never had. And when ads get introduced, it begs the question of, am I still gonna trust that agent?" — Collin Colburn In-Show Mentions: Commerce Media Has Hit “Day Two.” Now What?  EMarketer: IAB's Collin Colburn on the Future of Commerce Media More about IAB Associated Links: VISIONS Summit, Nov 3 at MoMA Check out Future Commerce on YouTube Check out Future Commerce Plus for exclusive content and save on merch and print Subscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce world Listen to our other episodes of Future Commerce Have any questions or comments about the show? Most people think great storytellers are born with natural talent. They're wrong. In this conversation, storytelling expert Philipp Humm explains why storytelling is actually a learnable skill—and why it may be the most valuable communication skill for entrepreneurs, leaders, investors, parents, and anyone who wants to influence others. You'll discover: ✔️ The 3 elements every unforgettable story needs ✔️ Why most public speaking advice actually makes you worse ✔️ How to become a confident speaker without memorizing speeches ✔️ The storytelling framework entrepreneurs should use to sell ideas naturally ✔️ Why emotion beats information every time ✔️ How impromptu speaking builds confidence faster than rehearsing scripts ✔️ The psychology behind stories that people remember for years ✔️ Why authenticity isn't about perfection—it's about connection Whether you're raising capital, leading a team, pitching clients, creating content, or simply trying to become a better communicator, these storytelling principles will transform how people listen to you. One of the biggest takeaways? People don't remember information. They remember stories. And the best part is—you don't need extraordinary life experiences to become a great storyteller. You simply need to learn how to tell everyday moments in a way that creates surprise, emotion, and vivid imagery.
