What happens when a casual political joke in a "private" employee Facebook group explodes into a national media crisis? In this episode of Little Questions, the podcast from Apella Advisors, hosts Jenny Scott and James Kirkup get into the messy reality of modern corporate communications: politics has spilled into absolutely everything. From the water cooler to staff WhatsApp groups, political discourse is no longer just for Westminster lobbyists. It's at the heart of daily organisational life. Jenny and James look at how seemingly safe spaces like company Slack channels and unofficial staff groups can turn internal banter into external reputational nightmares overnight, drawing on a recent incident involving a Royal Mail postman. They examine lessons from US corporate controversies like Bud Light, and from the UK's own divided political landscape following the Scottish and EU referendums, asking what the culture war actually costs organisations caught in the crossfire. The episode also tackles the thorny question of corporate activism. From Black Lives Matter to flying the Pride flag, how do organisations decide when to take a stand without starting to look like a political party? And does the modern push to bring your "whole self to work" actually hold up when professional responsibilities and generational divides pull in opposite directions? Jenny and James land on the same conclusion: clear decision-making frameworks beat panic every time. Know your core company purpose, focus on creating your products or providing your service, and have a plan ready before problems arise. The ultimate rule? Live and let live, but don't take the piss. Is Impact Investing Dead, or Does It Just Need a Reality Check?

State of Sustainability

Assets under management in the impact and ESG space are close to an all-time high, somewhere between $1.5 and $1.6 trillion. So why is capital actually leaving the sector? In this episode of the State of Sustainability, host Saif Hameed takes a detour from resilience and volatility to dig into what's going wrong, and where the genuine opportunities still exist. The short answer: the industry has an identity problem. ESG labels get applied to mainstream tech stocks on the basis that they carry low environmental risk. Returns across impact funds are wildly inconsistent and the gap between what the sector promises and what it can actually deliver has become impossible to ignore.Saif traces how impact investing developed along two tracks. Private markets had early pioneers like the Acumen Fund building something genuinely mission-led. Public markets then borrowed the language through ESG frameworks, with rather looser results.Three lessons from that history:ESG was never designed to do this job. It emerged in the 1990s as a risk-assessment tool, not as a valid basis for investment inclusion. Retrofitting it into a mainstream strategy was always going to cause problems. The trade-off question needs an honest answer. You cannot simultaneously maximise financial returns and social impact without giving something up. The industry has spent years avoiding that conversation.Measurement doesn't scale. Comparing affordable housing projects with renewable energy infrastructure under a single performance framework produces numbers that mean very little.Where does that leave things? Saif argues the sector needs a significant rebrand and a serious recalibration of financial expectations. But there are three areas where impact investing still has real potential: generating brand equity and strategic value for corporate venture capital; venture philanthropy, where charitable capital gets recycled for compounding impact rather than disappearing into operational costs; and catalytic first-loss capital inside blended finance structures run by multilateral development institutions. The through-line: accepting below-market returns might be the only way to preserve what impact investing was actually supposed to be.What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear from you. Email Saif@altruistiq.comReady to transform your sustainability reporting? Start your journey at Altruistiq.comThis podcast is produced by The Podcast Coach.

What if the secret to unbreakable supply chain resilience isn't squeezing your suppliers for the lowest price, but actively paying them to heal the planet? In this episode of the State of Sustainability, host Saif Hameed is joined by David Croft, former sustainability lead at Reckitt, Diageo, Waitrose, and Cadbury, to explore the critical shift from short-term agility to long-term resilience in global supply chains.David shares his extensive experience in building sustainable procurement strategies, emphasising the 'triple win' concept: an approach that delivers value for the business, the supplier, and the planet.A core focus of their discussion is the changing dynamic between large organisations and primary producers, such as farmers in the cocoa and latex industries. By rewarding sustainable land management, such as nature-based solutions that sequester carbon or prevent downstream flooding, companies can secure reliable, high-quality resources while mitigating significant ecological and financial risks.Ultimately, this episode offers a compelling look at how addressing environmental externalities head-on is no longer just a compliance exercise, but a fundamental driver of future business growth and resilience. What are your thoughts on this? How does a national newspaper group maintain its edge? On this edition of The Little Questions podcast, we're peeling back the curtain on the quiet power of your inbox, the evolution of business news, and why the era of the silent CEO is officially over. Guiding the conversation are the podcast's new hosts, Jenny Scott and James Kirkup, both partners at Apella Advisors. Jenny brings her experience as the former Director of Communications at the Bank of England and a BBC economics correspondent, while James offers the perspective of a former national newspaper political editor and think tank director. They are joined by Chris Williams, Executive Editor at Telegraph Media Group. With over 15 years at the title, Chris oversees the paper's business coverage and has a front-row seat to the radical shifts rocking the industry. The episode kicks off with the unexpected renaissance of the newsletter. Chris explains how The Telegraph's flagship newsletter reaches 2 million people daily, becoming their most potent tool for subscriber growth by returning to media's 18th-century roots: curated, intimate storytelling. We also dive into the "growing up" of business news. Readers no longer want dry profit reports; they crave long-form narratives that connect corporate performance to the broader societal pulse. Chris offers a provocative take on AI: while it disrupts search traffic, it may ultimately save traditional media. Because AI requires verified facts to function, high-quality journalism is regaining the leverage it lost during the social media boom. Finally, Chris issues a challenge to the C-suite: "News abhors a vacuum." He argues that risk-averse leaders can no longer stay silent on socio-political issues. If you don't tell your story, someone else will. He urges comms professionals to move past press releases and reinvest in the oldest tool in the kit: the personal relationship.  He also has a spicy thought about CEOs who only communicate via LinkedIn. We'd love to know what you think. Are you investing time in building and maintaining relationships with journalists? Do you think your C-suite execs should be speaking out publicly more or less in the current climate? Drop us an email - podcast@apelladvisors.com and please consider leaving us a review. Most podcasters and would-be podcasters eventually ask the same question: "Is a podcast coach actually worth the money?" And the answer really depends on why you're podcasting in the first place. If your podcast is a hobby or a creative side project, you can absolutely learn as you go. You can figure out your equipment, improve over time, and slowly find your groove behind the mic. But when your podcast is tied to your business, the conversation changes. Now your podcast has a job to do. It's connected to your authority, your reputation, your marketing, and ultimately your revenue. And that means the cost of "figuring it out later" gets a lot higher. In this episode, I break down: • Who actually benefits from podcast coaching • Why business podcasts change the ROI conversation • The hidden cost of trying to learn everything yourself • How the right coach can shorten the learning curve • What a podcast coach should really help you with • Why strategy matters more than equipment or software I also share a real client example of how a strategically built podcast helped sell out an executive retreat after launch. Because the real question isn't just whether a podcast coach is worth the money. It's whether your podcast idea is designed to make that investment worth it in the first place. A Dialogue with Justin Jackson and Alban BrookeJust in Jackson from Transistor.fm is so enthusiastic about Apple's new way to add video to their platform (called HLS). I have felt "Meh" about it since it was announced (I'm worried about using API's instead of using the RSS feed). So I wanted to see if I was missing something that might lead me to feel more like Justin.Later that same week Alban Brook from Buzzsprout reached out and so I combined the interviews to show multiple points of view about Apple's HLS implementation not that more hosts are being approved to connect to Apple via their API.Justin's View is Based On Younger PeopleWhile I have no children Justin has a few and he explained how watching them he sees them move from watching video to switching to audio. So the HLS video in Apple supports this (and it's already available on YouTube music, and Spotify. With Apple's new video options, when you log into Apple, you primarily see the shows that you've told Apple you want to see. Consequently, it may be a better experience. Kevin Finn on the Buzzcast show compared YouTube and the horrible experience to going to the movies, where everything is overpriced and the floor is sticky. The experience isn't as good.Don't Take on Too MuchIf you're a video creator already, adding your show to YouTube seems like a no brainer, and Alaban and Just both mentioned that when people signed up to be beta testers, many of the people chomping at the bit were already video creators.Justin mentions that much like coloring, you start with three colors and learn how to keep people engaged. Then start adding more colors. With podcasting it may make more sense to start with audio, and then add video. We are in a Wait and See PeriodWe don't actually know if this is going to take off. While we don't expect Apple to topple YouTube, we are interested to see just how many people jump on board. Both companies mentioned the benefits of being an early adopter.Pricing for HLS HostingTransistor offers HLS video on any package of of $49 and higher.Buzzsprout offers 6 hours a month for $30 ($25 if you purchase yearly).Captivate is $19/month with an additional $12 for video.Keep in mind Transistor and Captivate operate on a "As many shows and episodes as you want (but you bill goes up depending on downloads/traffic). They do limited shows that engage a certain audience (CEOs), and consequently are charging millions for sponsor a season (and are already sold out). They describe their show as, "We (Ben and David) personally invest 100+ hours each to research and produce a ~4 hour "conversational audiobook,” telling a company's complete history and strategy.Spotify's Video Options are BlurryI am always cautious about Spotify. We all know they are not fans of RSS, and they like to make features that only work in Spotify. In a recent article at Podnews, Jame Cridlan explains how uploading a video from your media host into Spotify may lock you into using the media host (where an RSS enables you to redirect the feed). There is talk that Spotify may manually be able to switch your show back to RSS (with consequences). The three bedrock skills to future-proof your sustainability career

Just 25% of industry experts believe the standalone sustainability function will exist in five years. So what is the next great frontier for sustainability leaders? In this episode, host Saif Hameed asks a provocative question fresh from hosting the Chicago State of Sustainability Summit: Will corporate sustainability functions still exist in five years? To help answer, Saif breaks down the three massive shifts currently challenging the sustainability professional's day-to-day workflow.First, integrating green goals into mainstream roles means CFOs, procurement officers, and supply chain teams are absorbing sustainability tasks - a double-edged sign of success.Second, rapid advancements in automation and agentic AI is likely to completely overtake routine tasks like carbon accounting, data aggregation, and stakeholder reporting in the coming years. Finally, a macro backlash against corporate sustainability has stifled the ambitious blue sky thinking that characterised the late 2010s, leaving behind more mundane compliance work. The good news, as Saif explains, is an exciting new horizon for the profession: Volatility Management. Driven by geopolitical conflicts and the terrifying reality that seven of our nine planetary boundaries are now breached, businesses face unprecedented high price variability in crucial commodities like rice, wheat, and cocoa. True business resilience now requires constant transformation and stabilisation to survive these shocks.Saif explains how sustainability professionals can secure their future by repositioning themselves as volatility managers. By leveraging their three bedrock skills - systems thinking, data insight, and storytelling - and combining them with deep business context, sustainability experts can build the crucial playbooks CEOs need to navigate an increasingly unpredictable world. What are your thoughts on this? Are you already pivoting towards volatility management as a way of insulating yourself from these developments in the sustainability space? I'd love to hear from you. Is your business truly cyber resilient, or are you one malicious click away from a system lockdown? In this episode of Softcat's Explain It podcast, host Helen Gidney is joined by James Blake from Cohesity and Gary Hawkins from Softcat to work through what modern data protection and recovery actually looks like, and why it differs from traditional disaster recovery. They discuss why cyber resilience can't be bought off the shelf, how conventional DR approaches risk reintroducing threats into a recovered environment, and why IT, security, and the C-suite must work as one rather than in separate lanes.James and Gary also break down where to start before an attack happens: baselining your IT maturity against NIST and ISO frameworks, treating your backup platforms as a security layer in their own right. As well as building the offline playbooks, digital jump bags, and clean-room environments that determine whether you survive the first 72 hours of a ransomware incident. The episode closes on AI, specifically how cybercriminals now use LLMs to find and exploit software vulnerabilities in under 24 hours, and what that means for how quickly organisations need to be able to respond.Hosted by Helen Gidney, Head of Architecture at Softcat, the Explain IT podcast is where we discuss, debate and demystify tech in simple, jargon-free language. Thanks for listening to the Explain IT podcast from Softcat. This podcast is produced by The Podcast Coach. "It's very important to remember - for the same reasons we bought back many of these other species like beaver, river otter, fisher, bald eagle - that all these species have a role ecologically in these ecosystems. And so the same questions should be asked for species like large carnivores to help restore those ecological interactions and ecosystem services."America's apex predator is the cougar, or mountain lion. They're thriving in the West, but were wiped out two centuries ago in the East, where talk of restoring them has simmered for decades. After spending time in New England during the summer of 2021 Ben Goldsmith became obsessed with this. Working with Mighty Earth and a growing coalition of other groups, Ben is proud to be part of a growing campaign to reintroduce ‘catamounts', as New Englanders called them. We're proud to have provided 100 informative, humorous, and occasionally thrilling episodes of Little Questions - the podcast for all of us working with or working in Corporate Affairs, Communications and PR. To mark our 100th episode, we have gone back into the archives and pulled moments from the conversations that still resonate. In this special episode - the last to be hosted by Matt Young and Andrew Brown - we look back at some of the best moments from our last 100 shows: PR - is it a trade, an art, a profession - or are we just making it up? The challenge of explaining what you actually do for a living - to anyone, but especially your mother - gets a proper airing. The CEOs who get it. Amanda Blanc (CEO @ AVIVA) "total brutal honesty, no smoke-blowing please". Henry Englehart (Founder of Admiral), who heard himself discussed in the storytelling episode, asked to come on, and delivered a very direct conversation about leadership communications. Winners, losers in the world of Comms: Shania Twain. Matt Hancock. Elon Musk. A Jaguar rebrand with no actual plan behind it. Thank You for Smoking. Edina Monsoon. Deciding who you will and won't represent. And the statistic that still surprises us… some of you have listened to several of the episodes more than once. What are you all doing with your lives!? Little Questions will remain at batting crease and will be looking to make another 100 episodes. So Apella partners, Jenny Scott and James Kirkup, will shortly be putting on the pads and helmets, and ready to knock up another century of wisdom and wit. Want to share your thoughts or ideas for future topics? you can get in touch at podcast@apellaadvisors.com. Please consider leaving us a review. Andrew Brown; formerly Director of Communications and Public affairs at Ageas Insurance, has more than ten years' experience leading the corporate affairs functions for global, listed, multifaceted firms across a range of regulated and unregulated sectors. It's done mostly for fun, status and selfies; sometimes for delicacies. They talk through practical strategies for using local drives and cloud services like Dropbox, iCloud, iDrive, Backblaze, and more; the crucial difference between sync and backup; and how to design a file workflow that actually fits how you podcast. Along the way, they veer into tech nostalgia (AOL, Windows Vista, DVDs), debate whether podcasting is “at the beginning of the end,” and tackle tricky topics like bad interviews, ad-heavy networks, and why not every conversation—or phone call—needs to be a podcast.Sponsors:PodcastBranding.co - They see you before they hear youBasedonastruestorypodcast.com - Comparing Hollywood with History?Video Version (unedited)Mentioned In This EpisodeSchool of Podcastinghttps://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/joinPodpagehttp://www.trypodpage.comHome Gadget Geekshttp://www.theaverageguy.tvPodcast Hot SeatiDriveDropboxFeatured Supporters: Jill and Alison from the Keep the Flame Alive Podcast. The podcast for fans of the Olympics and Paralympics at flamealivepod.com Leave Your QuestionGo to askthepodcastcoach.com/voicemail and leave your message to be answered on the next show.Featured: Keep the Flame Alive ShowIf you love the Olympics, you'll love this showDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Mein Gast heute: Markus Vieghofer. "If you give rivers more space to flood the lands, to bring sediment - sand, clay - they not only bring sediment, they also bring life!"In this episode of Rewilding the World, Ben Goldsmith interviews one of the most impactful architects of rewilding in Europe, Dutchman Wouter Helmer. Despite being the most densely populated, intensively farmed and heavily developed country in Europe, The Netherlands is a rewilding powerhouse. Wouter's key insight is simply that rewilding offers the most effective way to protect communities from flooding which has blighted the Netherlands for centuries. As a result, the country is now threaded with fat, vibrant corridors of nature, teeming with wildlife.Ben Goldsmith is a British financier and rewilding enthusiast. In this episode, I tackled a common issue solo podcasters face: what do you do when you need to reference a stat, date, or chart on the fly while recording while on a LIVE STREAM? I discussed some typical options: pausing to Google it (which can break your momentum), guessing (and risk sounding uninformed), or flagging it for post-production fixes (which adds editing time). But I pointed out a missed option: coming prepared! If you do your research ahead of time, you can minimize disruptions when recording. However, I know that's not always possible—especially when recording live. For example, on my weekly live show, Ask the Podcast Coach, I answer spontaneous questions from the chat room, so I can't always be ready with every fact. When recording solo and I have a slip-up, I simply pause a few seconds to create a clear space in the audio. That pause makes it easy to spot and edit later. It's a technique I use on all my solo recordings. For my live show, Ask the Podcast Coach (askthepodcastcoach.com/live), I prepare as much as possible, but also rely on interacting with the chat. If I need to look something up, I'll edit the audio version but leave the video as-is since YouTube doesn't allow file replacement.I also mentioned that preparation helps explain visuals for audio listeners, guiding them through what's happening on screen. More planning always means less editing afterwards; if you wing it, expect more cleanup.Running a live show is a juggling act—managing the sound, levels, chat room, and next questions. Thankfully, I have a co-host to help. If you're on your own, consider whether going live is the best option given your current workflow. Finally, I shared some advice: practice any new tech or process before going live. Don't try something for the first time in front of an audience!Websites mentioned:Ask the Podcast CoachSchool of PodcastingIf you want help not “wetting your pants” on your first try, check out the School of Podcasting where you get access to me for consulting, a supportive community, and step-by-step courses. Thanks for listening—I'm here to help podcasters succeed! This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

Your podcast audio is quietly killing your authority. If your mic isn't set up properly, listeners won't trust you long enough to hear your message. BTW, you might be using your mic wrong without realizing it, so hit play.   If your podcast audio sounds off, your authority takes a hit before you even get a chance to make your point. I've said this for years, as a podcast coach with over 250 episodes, and I'll say it again: how you sound matters. Poor mic technique doesn't come across as "authentic" or "scrappy." It signals a lack of professionalism, and listeners make that judgment fast. In this episode, I break down why bad audio costs you trust, why there's no excuse for it anymore, and the single most important fix you can make today to sound more credible instantly. I walk you through how microphones actually work, why so many podcasters point them the wrong way, and the simple visual that will change how you record forever. This is the quickest win you'll ever get in podcasting. No new gear. No fancy tools. Just better mic awareness and cleaner audio going in. If you want to know whether your podcast is supporting your business or quietly working against it, grab my free podcast audit. It's a step-by-step process that shows you where authority leaks happen and what to fix first so your podcast actually does its job of generating leads and sales.

I'm diving deep into the pros and cons of doing a live podcast, inspired by a question from Ralph over at askralph.com. If you've ever considered going live with your show—whether with video or audio—you'll want to hear my honest take after years of experience.I break down what it's really like to start live streaming, especially if you're new to podcasting or just thinking about expanding into video. From gear recommendations, background setups, and green screens to my latest waste-of-money purchase (ouch!), I share what works, what doesn't, and what you should really consider before investing. You'll hear why consistency in scheduling is key and how I built a loyal live audience for Ask the Podcast Coach, which now feels like the new Saturday morning cartoons for my regulars. I talk candidly about realistic audience expectations—don't be shocked when only a handful show up at first!—and why you shouldn't start live if you're overwhelmed by tech.I run through my favorite live streaming platforms, like Restream, eCamm Live, EVMux, and Streamyard, and why I personally steer clear of Riverside despite its flashy features. I talk camera options, from affordable 4K webcams to fancy DSLRs, and stress why you should practice, practice, practice before going live in front of folks. You'll also get my advice on handling live chat, co-host dynamics, the need for two monitors, and the occasional awkwardness of booting guests off gracefully. I share war stories about live mishaps, from surprise guests to technical gremlins, and why your audience is nearly always rooting for you.If you're weighing whether the extra expense, learning curve, and time spent prepping for live shows is worth it, I'll walk you through how it's brought me closer to my audience and generated great content for my main show. Spoiler: For me, the connection, fun, and instant feedback have made it worthwhile—even if those first few live shows felt like talking to a brick wall!Takeaways: Going live can totally change your podcast game, but it comes with a whole load of tech headaches. There are so many tools out there for live streaming, but honestly, they all have their quirks and bugs. You really need to be consistent with your live show schedule, or folks will forget about you faster than a sneeze in a windstorm. Interacting with your audience live can spark some killer ideas, so don't shy away from it! Don't overthink your video background; if they care more about your messy room than your words, that's a problem. Prepare like you're about to run a marathon, because going live isn't just 'turn it on and chat' - it's a whole production!
