How did Bruce become The Boss, and what did it cost him to get there? Laura Barton explores the extraordinary life story of Bruce Springsteen, taking a front-row seat at five important gigs to reveal the life behind the legend.Bruce is living in Hollywood, L.A, making music without his long-time bandmates. It's a time of Bruce being far away from his roots - and from some of his most loyal fans. But a homecoming concert in his school gym in Freehold, New Jersey marks a turning point.~~~“I'm here tonight to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable, particularly these days, us. That's my magic trick.”In Legend: The Bruce Springsteen Story, we uncover the magic trick to discover how a scrawny, long-haired introvert from small-town New Jersey became the iconic, muscular, and oft-misunderstood rock star of the 1980s, to the eloquent elder statesmen he is now. What can his story tell us about America today? In each episode, Laura takes us to the front row of a live performance that reveals a different side of The Boss, and hears him across the decades in his own words from the archive. We'll also hear from fellow worshippers in the Church of Springsteen and disciples from the E Street Band, including drummer Max Weinberg, tributes from those influenced by Bruce, such as Bryce Dessner from The National, as well as Freehold town historian Kevin Coyne, former Asbury Park Press music critic Kelly Jane Cotter, and biographers such as Eric Alterman, Steven Hyden and Warren Zanes. The Bruce Springsteen Story comes from the production team behind BBC Radio 4's award-winning Joni Mitchell Story, and the podcast Soul Music – “… the gold standard for music podcasts…” (Esquire).Producer: Eliza Lomas Series Development: Mair Bosworth Sound Design and Original Music: Hannis Brown Production Coordinator: Stuart Laws Research: Sarah Goodman Series Editor: Emma Harding Commissioning Editors: Daniel Clarke and Matthew Dodd

When it comes to John Carpenter's iconic franchise, Halloween, most people may be familiar, in the abstract, with the name Moustapha Akkad as his name is the first to appear in the opening credits for every movie. What fans of the series may not be familiar with is how integral Moustapha was to bringing the story of Michael Myers to life, producing all 8 original movies, even after John Carpenter, himself, left the series. To celebrate Halloween, Brian Santana joins me to talk about the life of Moustapha Akkad, the man born to a customs officer in Syria, who came to Hollywood to bring the story of Islam to life on the big screen. From his movie, The Message, to becoming the silent force behind one of the horror genre's greatest franchises, Moustapha Akkad's life was rich with creativity until his violent death at the hands of suicide bombers in Amman, Jordan. This is the story of his life and his enduring legacy, honoring the man who was so pivotal in making Michael Myers and the season what it is today. Bad Bunny, also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is moving into the spotlight with major music news this week. The global superstar has just dropped a surprise holiday single, “Pitorro de Coco,” inspired by a classic Puerto Rican rum drink, marking a festive close to 2025 before the launch of his highly anticipated sixth studio album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, which translates to “I Should Have Taken More Photos.” According to NME and Lagos Review, the album is slated for release on January 5, 2025, and features 17 tracks, with a sound that blends his signature reggaeton with emotional storytelling and deeper themes centered on nostalgia, family, and living in the present. The mood of this upcoming album is more introspective than previous releases. Bad Bunny teased the project with a poignant video featuring Puerto Rican filmmaker Jacobo Morales, who reflects on the fleeting nature of life and cherishing memories through photos. The teaser's emotional core seems to set the scene for a very personal chapter in Bad Bunny's artistic journey, one that resonates deeply with his massive international audience. His single “Pitorro de Coco” tells of heartbreak during the holiday season, adding to Bad Bunny's reputation for transforming personal pain into relatable anthems. The recently released track “El Clúb” is a fusion of EDM and plena, an Afro-Caribbean style that's deeply Puerto Rican, while “NeuvaYoL” is a fan favorite paying tribute to the cultural link between Puerto Rico and New York City. According to Sweety High, the latter track's energetic beat and cross-cultural references have made it stand out in the U.S., especially among Latin music fans.Less than a year ago, Bad Bunny's “Most Wanted Tour” ranked as the seventh-highest grossing tour of 2024, notching over $210 million in revenue, further cementing his status as a leading force in global music. This week, anticipation is rising as fans speculate about his setlist for the imminent 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, with many expecting him to perform new hits from Debí Tirar Más Fotos, alongside classics like “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” a salsa-infused track about unforgettable love, and the sentimental “Amorfada,” according to the Asbury Park Press and Sweety High.Critics are already calling the new record one of Bad Bunny's best. Numero describes Debí Tirar Más Fotos as “universally praised,” highlighting its mix of traditional Puerto Rican genres and modern pop sounds. The album explores themes of love, reflection, and cultural pride, notably in tracks such as “La Mudanza,” which retells the story of Bad Bunny's family and roots, and “DtMF,” which encourages embracing the moment and cherishing loved ones. As Baylor Lariat notes, the album's emotional range has even managed to win over listeners who wouldn't normally listen to Bad Bunny.Beyond music, Bad Bunny recently appeared in the trailer for the new “Happy Gilmore 2” with Adam Sandler, showing his expanding influence into film and pop culture. Whether it's music, livestreams, or movies, Bad Bunny continues to break boundaries and capture attention across the globe this week as fans anxiously wait for his next big move. Thanks for tuning in. Six weeks later, Jeannette's body was found atop Devil's Teeth, a cliff in Houdaille Quarry. On the afternoon of August 7, 1972, sixteen-year-old Jeannette DePalma left her house in Springfield, NJ and was never seen alive again. Six weeks later, Jeannette's remains were discovered when a neighborhood dog returned to its owner at a newly built apartment complex, carrying Jeannette's badly decomposed arm in its mouth. The news of Jeannette's death spread quickly around the small town and the rumors about the circumstances were not far behind. According to witnesses, the girl's body was surrounded by occult symbols and objects, and within a few weeks news outlets began reporting that Jeannette had been the victim of ritual human sacrifice. For more than five decades, the murder of Jeannette DePalma had fascinated New Jersey residents and has even captured the attention of news outlets from around the country and occasionally around the world. Yet the more coverage the case receives, the more the rumors of occult murder and Satanism seem to grow, obscuring the more relevant facts and the tragedy at the heart of the case.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1972. Half of Americans in a recent survey indicated they believe national news organizations intend to mislead, misinform, or persuade the public to adopt a particular point of view through their reporting. In a 2023 survey by Gallup and the Knight Foundation, there is a low level of trust in the media to the startling point where many believe there is an intent to deceive. When asked whether they agreed with the statement that national news organizations do not intend to mislead, 50 percent said they disagreed--only 25 percent agreed. Not a good sign for the republic or the public relations business. Joining us to discuss this and more is Annie Scranton. March Madness is upon us! And Jersey cares about basketball. Jersey style basketball also directly reflects the state and its attitude. In this episode, Chris talks with Jerry Carino from the Asbury Park Press, who knows more about Jersey basketball than maybe anyone else on earth. They talk about where things are at right now, as well as the bigger picture of how this sport and the state's relationship with it show off things about the Garden State's mindset. It's a good one!**PLEASE NOTE** that the intro was recorded on Sunday afternoon, and that evening there was a huge shock: Rutgers did *not* make the tournament. It's considered the biggest surprise snub in the sport. Both Rutgers and Seton Hall are in the less prestigious NIT tournament, and if both win two games they'll face each other there in what would be a weirdly contentious game for the NIT.Jersey fans, it looks like we now have to all rally behind the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, who face off against Texas Southern in the NCAA tournament on March 15th. And maybe even... PRINCETON?! Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

New to St. Rose High School but well known and respected in the world of Jersey Shore Athletics, Louis “Del” Dal Pra has joined our team as our Supervisor of Athletics.Del Dal Pra has spent most of his life on the Jersey Shore. He grew up in Rumson and was an All-Shore football and baseball player at RFH in 1984 and was inducted into the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He then continued playing Baseball and Football at Glassboro State College and graduated in 1991 with a teaching degree in Health and Physical Education. After graduation he returned to RFH were he taught H/PE and was an assistant football coach from 1992-1999. He also coached baseball at RFH from 1991 to 1994. As a baseball coach, Dal Pra first standout season came in 1996 when he guided Henry Hudson to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 1 sectional championship game and was named Asbury Park Press Baseball coach of the year. In 1998 he was the head coach at OCC and in 2000 was named the head baseball coach at Ocean. Dal Pra led the Spartans to four Shore Conference division titles, two Monmouth County Tournament titles, one Shore Conference Tournament championship and two NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 3 sectional titles. Dal Pra was also an assistant football coach when Ocean won the Central Jersey Group 3 crown in 2000 and 2005 and was named baseball coach of the year in 2006 by the Asbury Park Press. While teaching and coaching at Ocean Coach Del earned his Masters degree from Kean University with a degree in School Administration. In 2008, Dal Pra was then hired as Red Bank's athletic director and tasked with resuscitating a struggling athletic department. That fall season, the football team was 0-10 and the boys and girls soccer, girls tennis and field hockey teams combined for just nine wins. "Those times were horrible for me," he said. "We had teams playing on fields and courts that had no upgrades in almost 40 years. Outdated uniforms and equipment had to be replaced with one of the smallest budgets in the Shore Conference. I knew I had to think outside the box because it was not safe for our student-athletes and they deserved better."With the help of some very dedicated parents, Dal Pra founded the Buc Backer Booster Club in 2009. He fostered the buy-in from the entire coaching staff and they helped him build a winning culture in Little Silver that was missing for a long time. From 2010-2020 he was also able to start and finish such projects as lights for the stadium field, new home and away stands, a new wood gym floor, new gym lights, new gym bleachers and new scoreboards in the fieldhouse. His most proud moment was the opening of a new state of the art weight room. Coach Del was named Athletic Director of the year in 2016 and 2020 and retired from RBR in July 2020. Before retiring all of the RBR teams were running successful programs and playing on top notch facilities. In 2021 the NJSIAA enshrined Coach Del in the New Jersey State Coaches Hall of Fame in Robbinsville. Last school year 2021-2022 Dal Pra worked at Matawan High School in the Security Department. Currently he works for the Philadelphia Phillies as an assistant groundskeeper for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. “I love working for the BlueClaws and enjoy every minute I am at the ballpark,” Dal Pra said. “However, I am even more excited to get back to working as a high school Athletic Director, especially at St. Rose. I've had a lot of great offers this past summer but when the opportunity to work at a school that appreciates its coaches and athletes like St. Rose does came along- I jumped at the chance.""St. Rose's win of the Shop-Rite Cup in 2021-2022 for Private Group 1 schools demonstrates its commitment to athletics with programs and coaches on the top of their game. I am excited to work with the coaches and athletes to take the program to the next level."Help us

My guest today is Nicquel Terry Ellis. Nicquel is the senior writer for CNN's Race and Equality team. Before that, she was a national correspondent for USA Today covering race inequality and activism. She has also spent six years working in local news with the Detroit News and the Asbury Park Press.I often receive the criticism that I only talk to people like John McWhorter, Sam Harris and Glenn Lowry, who agree with me about the problem of wokeness and the moral panic around racism and white supremacy. However, the people making that charge only see the tip of the iceberg. They don't see the dozens of requests and emails I send to prominent people on the other side of this issue to come on my show, all of which get rejected. Ibram Kendi is the only such attempt that I've made public. Nicquel is really the first mainstream media person, in a long time, that disagrees with me on the race issue but is willing to talk about it. So I'm grateful to her for that. Unfortunately, I did not have that much time with Nicquel but in the future, I hope to go deeper into all of these subjects with people who disagree with me.In this episode, Nicquel and I talk about the biases of the mainstream media, on the topic of race. We talk about racial disparities and the use of force by the police. We also talk about George Floyd, Tony Timpa and Ma'Khia Bryant. Towards the end of the podcast, we go on to discuss whether Black America as a whole is making progress or sliding backwards, and much more. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

This episode is the second of two that focuses on the treatment and sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine use and the opioid epidemic. The war on drugs is a calculated racist political tool. Crack didn't just appear in Black communities...it came from somewhere. In part 2, more of Nwayieze and Dani's conversations with Jack Brown and Susan Burton. Susan and Jack talk about the repercussions they faced because of substance use, their recovery journeys, and the "gentler, more compassionate" approach to the opioid epidemic. This episode also features interviews with Dr. Ayana Jordan, an addiction psychiatrist, and Andrew Goudsward, a reporter for the Asbury Park Press, who has done extensive reporting on the opioid epidemic.

Prior to forming PPR, Annie worked for nearly a decade as a seasoned television producer, booking for major networks such as CNN, Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC & ABC. TV is definitely a specialty of Annie's, combining her unique understanding of behind-the-scenes television producing, alongside her unparalleled list of contacts. Pace PR has multiple clients on national + local TV every single day, including CNBC, Fox News, HLN, MSNBC, Fox Business Network, Bloomberg TV, and many others. Highlights of client work include working with travel company darling Away in its first two years of business, assisting with media relations efforts and landing numerous Tier 1 placements for the brand and its founders. One of her most interesting clients was Jeff Ashton, the prosecutor in the highly-publicized Casey Anthony trial. Annie secured him multiple, sought-after interviews upon the end of the trial and Ashton's retirement, which ultimately resulted in a New York Times bestselling book, Imperfect Justice, which Annie coordinated with her good friend Lisa Sharkey at HarperCollins. They were all thrilled when Lifetime called to make it into a made-for-TV movie starring Rob Lowe. Annie also spends time speaking on the topics of PR, women in business and the importance of personal branding. Recent conferences and events she has spoken at include Hopperx1 New York City 2019, DIG South Tech Summit 2019 and Startup Grind Global Conference 2020. She will also be speaking at INBOUND 2020 later this year. In 2019, she also spoke at the Women Impact Tech Conference, where she honored and humbled to introduce keynote Arianna Huffington, who couldn't have been lovelier and has left an indelible mark on Annie! Annie has also had experience writing for various outlets, including the Asbury Park Press, Huffington Post, Law360, PR News and many others. She's also recently been enjoying talking on different podcasts about her entrepreneurial journey. Annie is a graduate of Smith College where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the weekly newspaper, The Sophian. She also received her Masters in Public Relations from New York University in 2018 and taught Introduction to Media Relations for one year at Hofstra University. She has given numerous guest lectures at various universities in and around NYC. Annie also recently served on the Board of Directors for the New York Smith College Club and the Executive Committee for the Catholic Big Sisters & Big Brothers. She is also a member of the New York Women in Communications, The Step Up Network and Ladies who Launch. Annie and her husband Michael live in Manhattan and are raising their adorable young daughter Rose. In her free time (which isn't much) Annie enjoys puzzles, audio books and riding her Peloton. When I was a kid I wanted to be two things when I grew up. A comedian and a cartoonist. For a very long time I thought cartooning was going to be my main focus and one of my inspirations in that field was Steve Breen. He was living in NJ at the time and working for the Asbury Park Press. A paper my parents got every morning. I'd grab the funny pages and the editorial cartoon before heading to school to read both. Comics were my shield against the rest of the world and Steve's biting commentary on both the editorial page and in his strip, Grand Avenue always helped me feel less alone. Getting to finally talk to the self proclaimed good will ambassador for New Jersey and finding out he's just as funny and down to earth as I'd always assumed he'd be was a thrill for me. Hope you guys enjoy this one! Enjoy!

Shaun Eli Breidbart is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. You can watch his videos and read some of his writings, including satirical political essays and hundreds of jokes he's written for late-night television, on his website BrainChampagne.com where his slogan “Brain Champagne: Clever Comedy for Smart Mindssm” rings true. Shaun Eli has rightfully been called one of America's smartest comics. Whether it's a story about dining with a vegetarian or successfully fighting a parking ticket, master storyteller Shaun Eli shows you that there's hilarity in the ordinary if you approach life with a comedic warp. Job interviews? Serving on the NYC criminal jury? How about the Ten Commandments? For just about anything he's experienced Shaun has a hilarious story at the ready. With a sense of humor, that's both cheerful and universal Shaun has headlined shows on five continents. His jokes have been quoted everywhere from the New York Post to Readers Digest to Healthcare Finance News. In both Reform Judaism magazine and the Christian Science Monitor, where he was the subject of the cover story. He's been featured on CareerBuilder.com and CNN, in local papers like the Scarsdale Inquirer and the Asbury Park Press and in the college papers the Yale Daily News and the Daily Pennsylvanian. Even in The Journal of Irreproducible Results, a scientific humor magazine. Yes, there is one. And his group The Ivy League of Comedy was the subject of a front-page story in the Philadelphia Inquirer. More than just smart, funny, and clever, Shaun is determined to express his opinion passionately, not surprising for someone who wrote his first satirical essay at age ten. When profiled in Fortune magazine “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno quoted one of Shaun's jokes, citing it as an example of the type of “smart comedy” he's happy to include in his opening monologue. Jay and other late-night hosts used Shaun's topical material in their monologues for almost two decades. Outside the world of comedy, Shaun was a world-class athlete in two obscure sports (rowing and dragon-boat racing), worked as a lifeguard instructor, and is an instrument-rated pilot. He is also an award-winning economic forecaster who once sold his car to a hitchhiker.

"Slow Down" A career in the music business is tough but it's definitely made easier when you blow up with your first single and become part of a musical revolution igniting an entire region and bringing it all to a national stage. Then, the bottom falls out. Do you quit? Never! You re-adjust, re-organize, come up with an unconventional plan and go after it! In 1996, The Refreshments from Tempe, AZ, were all over the radio with their single, “Banditos” then after a record company changing course and leaving them to fend for themselves, the band found itself at a crossroads. The lead singer, Roger Clyne, and the drummer P. H. Naffah reformed into a new quartet called, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Hailed as one of the most exciting live acts on the road today, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers are musical beacons of the Southwest fueled by witty and insightful lyrics, crunching guitar riffs, a dynamic rhythm section and tequila. RCPM are the only act to release seven consecutive studio albums to land on the top 10 of Billboard's Internet Sales Chart, two at No. 1, all released on a 100% independent record label. Dubbed the “Springsteen of the Southwest” by the Asbury Park Press, this is the story of how a totally independent band not only succeeded but created a following that borders on cult-like. The fans, also called Peacemakers, are some of the greatest, most loyal fanbase in music today. The band tours to soldout shows all over the world, they own TWO music festivals, wrote the theme song for TV's “King of the Hill” and have their own brand of tequila, affectionately called, Mexican Moonshine. This is the greatest rock band that you might have never heard of and at the heart of it all is their fearless, totally independent leader. I am proud to have as my guest on The Golf Bag, Roger Clyne!
