This month, we have explored the season of winter as a way into our meditation practice. We have looked at winter in our external landscapes, as well as our internal landscapes. We've listened to the sounds of winter, we've talked about wolves and our animal nature, and today, we're going to dive a little bit more into the creativity of winter.I was deeply inspired by a recent essay written and illustrated by Candace Rardon titled, ‘Like A Garden in Winter'. Candace is an author, illustrator, visual storyteller, and creator of Dandelion Seeds (one of my favorite publications on Substack). She is also the creator of many of the sleep stories you might have listened to on Calm.Together, Candace and I chat about what it means to bloom in winter, the season of hibernation. We talk about finding inspiration and meditative moments in the world around us; the art of visual storytelling, what makes a good sleep story and so much more. This conversation was such a joy to record; I hope you find as much inspiration in it as I have.At the end of today's interview, Candace offers us a mindful reflection and journaling prompt born of the beauty of Snowdrops. So grab your notebook, a cozy seat, and join us!In this episode:01:10 Exploring the Creativity of Winter03:12 The Art of Visual Storytelling03:49 The Journey of Moving Continents05:28 The Power of Collaboration in Creativity14:44 The Evolution of 'Like a Garden in Winter'23:42 Finding Strength in Winter: A Metaphor for Life24:35 Journey into Mindfulness through Travel and Art27:09 The Role of Creativity in Mindfulness30:35 The Magic of Sleep Stories41:05 Lessons from Winter Blooms44:26 The Joy of Spring: A New ChapterLearn more about Candace Rardon and her work here: https://www.candaceroserardon.com/https://dandelionseeds.substack.com/Sign up for my newsletter at https://merylarnett.substack.com/ to receive free mini meditations each week, creative musings, and more.Make a donation or learn more about my free offerings and live classes by visiting merylarnett.cominstagram.com/merylarnettyoutube.com/@themindfulminutepodcast#meditatewithmeryl

Whether or not you have any artistic talent, Amanda believes that sitting down and doing some sketching on your travels is a great idea, and in Episode 29 she chats with two travellers who do just that (although it must be said that they both have great artistic talent!). Candace Rardon is an amazing artist who has sketched, drawn and painted her way around the world. She chats about the connections you can make if you sit down in a new place to sketch something of the scene around you. Aggie Lim is a former psychologist and long-time travel-lover who has come to sketching in more recent years, but is completely converted. She chats about the various benefits of taking a sketchbook with you wherever you go. Gaining confidence from your travels is just one more great reason to get out there and travel often. In Episode 15 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast Amanda talks to three guests who all agree that travelling has increased their confidence substantially and helped them out in all kinds of ways, including life beyond travel. First up, Amanda chats with Jeff Sandquist of Intentionally Wandering, who only started travelling relatively recently and learnt so much from it - travelling gave him a brand new kind of confidence. After that she speaks with Annalicia Lynn who spent a year living and working in Taiwan and was particularly able to notice how much her confidence had grown when her family came to visit. Amanda's final guest is Candace Rardon, and when they spoke, Candace was spending a couple of months in Norway writing a book about a trip she took to India, which was the kind of trip which pushed her far outside her comfort zone and therefore boosted her confidence significantly. Links:  Jeff at Intentionally Wandering - http://www.intentionallywandering.com Jeff’s Intentionally Wandering podcast - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/intentionally-wandering/id1002563000?mt=2 Annalicia Lynn of Yoga and Pilates Online -http://yogaandpilatesonline.com Candace Rose Rardon at The Great Affair - http://www.candaceroserardon.com Candace’s book: Beneath the Lantern’s Glow - http://bit.ly/LanternsGlow 10 refections on having family visit us abroad on My Meena Life - http://www.mymeenalife.com/reflections-family-visit-us-abroad/ The Slow Home Podcast - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/slow-home-podcast-brooke-mcalary/id985005895?mt=2 Show notes at https://notaballerina.com/15

Slow travel is a real buzz word these days but many travellers have been using slow travel principles for decades - because travelling slowly is a fantastic way to see the world and really get to know it well. In Episode 13 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, Amanda talks to three different travellers who have all embraced slow travel in their own way. First up is Tim Leffel, who prefers smaller towns and villages over big cities because it’s easier to travel slowly in a place where you can get to know the locals. Amanda also speaks to Candace Rardon, who as a freelance artist and writer is able to really practice slow travel, and she does it both on a daily basis by sitting still somewhere for a few hours to sketch, and planning her trips so she stays places for weeks or months. The final guest today is David Soto Jr who is currently in the middle of his own slow trip in a van around the United States. When Amanda spoke to him he was sitting in his van on an airforce base with his dog Rusty looking on; since then he’s been exploring some of America’s most beautiful spots at a very leisurely pace.Links: Tim Leffel - http://timleffel.com Candace Rose Rardon at The Great Affair http://www.candaceroserardon.com Candace’s book: Beneath the Lantern’s Glow - http://bit.ly/LanternsGlow David Soto Jr. at The Primitive You - https://theprimitiveyou.com David (and his dog) on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theprimitivedave/ Tweet me @amandakendle Hashtag #thoughtfultravelpod Chat on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NotABallerina Show notes at https://notaballerina.com/13

Whether good or bad, facing surprises is usually part of travel. In Episode 6 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I’m talking to two other travellers about the surprises they’ve encountered on their travels. First up is Candace Rardon, someone I was super-excited to interview and have known online for some years. Candace is a sketch artist, writer, photographer and all-round travel genius and a deep thinker on travel as well. She shares several stories of surprises she’s had when her expectations have been shattered on her travels - and how this always turns out for the best. Next I talk to Jeff Sandquist of the Intentionally Wandering podcast. He philosophically talks about how surprised he has been by the impact of travel on his life and how the lessons from travel have been drawn back into this everyday life at home, too. Links: Candace Rose Rardon at The Great Affair http://www.candaceroserardon.com Candace’s book on Amazon Beneath the Lantern's Glow: Sketches and Stories from Southeast Asia and Japan http://www.amazon.com/Beneath-Lanterns-Glow-Sketches-Southeast/dp/1490503641 Jeff Sandquist at Intentionally Wandering http://www.intentionallywandering.com Jeff’s Intentionally Wandering podcast on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/intentionally-wandering/id1002563000?mt=2 Camel race in Tunisia http://www.notaballerina.com/2011/12/dont-back-camel-in-tunisias-sahara.html Not finished with Iceland http://www.notaballerina.com/2015/10/why-im-not-finished-with-iceland-yet.html Show notes at https://notaballerina.com/06

Candace Rardon is a writer, speaker, sketch artist and illustrator out telling stories about the world through her words and watercolors. You can see these stories on her blog and portfolio The Great Affair. Among other publications, her work has been featured in National Geographic's magazine. As an artist, Candace’s work has opened doors for her to experience the people in the places she’s been, and to take home with her the stories that define who she’s always becoming. Along with her regular travels, she also lived in India for nearly a full year and I’m excited to get into what that was like, as a traveler and as a woman on her own in a vastly different culture. What We Cover: Where Candace draws inspiration from for her art. Candace's path towards location independence after getting a degree in English. How Candace found herself on the Rickshaw Run throughout India, and how she fell so in love with the country that she lived there for a year afterwards. A deep dive into why she sketches and how doing it on the road helps her to learn more not only about the place but also about herself.
