Kristen Domke: Military Mental Health is Broken | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this deeply emotional and brutally honest episode of the Hopeaholics Podcast, we sit down with Kristen Domke—an Air Force veteran, personal trainer, and survivor—whose life story is nothing short of extraordinary. Kristen opens up about the emotional toll of serving in the military, including multiple deployments, witnessing unimaginable trauma, surviving military sexual assault, and battling intense mental health struggles that led to multiple suicide attempts. Her story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and redemption. After years of numbing pain through alcohol, losing her identity as a military police officer, and feeling completely alone, Kristen finally reached a breaking point—and then, miraculously, a breakthrough. Through intensive treatment, therapy, a renewed connection with faith, and the support of a recovery community, Kristen found the strength to rebuild her life and start healing from the inside out. She talks candidly about how hard it was to ask for help, what recovery really means beyond just sobriety, and how fitness, faith, and setting boundaries helped her find purpose again.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #RecoveryIsPossible #Hope #wedorecover Join our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. Failure is something we all experience—whether in our work, our relationships, or our spiritual walk. Send us a textTurning fifty isn't just about crossing an age threshold—it's about recognizing the human connections that build resilience throughout a lifetime. In this deeply personal episode, therapist Steve Bisson reflects on the relationships that have shaped his capacity for strength, growth, and recovery across five decades.Steve begins by honoring his parents, whose contrasting yet complementary influences established his foundation. His father, who lacked a paternal role model yet became an exceptional dad himself, taught Steve about honesty and critical thinking. His mother—a glass-ceiling breaker before the term existed—demonstrated determination through her 47-year career and instilled feminist principles that continue to guide Steve's professional approach. Together, they exemplified loyalty, work ethic, and perseverance that became cornerstones of his resilience framework. The episode takes listeners through Steve's "Three Musketeers" friendship with Joce and Frank—a bond spanning 38 years that has weathered countless challenges. Through emotional storytelling, Steve reveals how these lifelong connections, along with other key friendships, professional relationships, and even his therapy clients, have collectively taught him different aspects of resilience. Perhaps most touching is his tribute to his teenage daughters, who continue to teach him patience, emotional expression, and growth even as they navigate their own challenges.Steve's resilience journey illuminates how our capacity to overcome obstacles isn't built in isolation but through meaningful connections that sustain us. Whether you're approaching a milestone birthday, reflecting on your support network, or simply curious about the human factors behind emotional strength, this episode offers valuable insights into how relationships shape our ability to navigate life's inevitable challenges. Send us a textTruth can be both illuminating and devastating. When I recorded my very first podcast episode on "content communicating" with my then-husband, I believed we were strengthening our marriage by teaching others to "say what you mean and mean what you say." Little did I know he was actively betraying me throughout our entire year of podcasting together.Looking back at that initial episode brings a mixture of embarrassment, pain, and unexpected wisdom. What began as a simple communication concept has evolved into something far more powerful in my life: telling the whole truth. Not just the polite truth or the partial truth, but the complete, nuanced reality of our experiences. This isn't just about clearly expressing whether you need a bathroom break on a road trip—it's about acknowledging the complex, sometimes contradictory truths that define our lives. My truth included desperately wanting to save my marriage while ultimately choosing divorce. It included building a life coaching career focused on helping couples rebuild after betrayal, then transforming that practice when I realized I couldn't be the poster child for staying together through infidelity. The whole truth is messy, painful, and ultimately freeing. Through my own healing journey, I've learned that speaking our complete truth—first to ourselves, then to others—forms the foundation for authentic living after betrayal. Whether deciding to skip an event where seeing my ex would trigger dysregulation or setting boundaries that honor my wellbeing, this practice of whole-truth telling has become my compass. "When was the last time you felt the baby move? There is no heartbeat." Those were the words that Rebbetzin Tzipah Wertheimer's doctor told her when she went in for an appointment at 9 months pregnant.Rebbetzin Tzipah bravely shares about the loss of her baby at full term. The sadness and disappointment; the way she handled coming home from the hospital without the baby, and how she was able to move forward. She talks about the mentors from whom she sought advice, and the strength she gained from her Chabad on Campus of Queens. Rebbetzin Tzipah, and her husband, Rabbi Shaul Wertheimer, have been running the Chabad on Campus of Queens (New York) since 2004.Rebbetzin Tzipah goes on to speak about the losses of two other pregnancies, and her relationship with Hashem during these challenging times. She learned to lean into the Jewish traditions of grief and mourning. She also received some poignant advice from one of her mentors: "You don't need to understand everything in order to move forward." In other words, we need to have Emunah (faith) in Hashem that everything He does is good...but we don't need to understand how or why it's good. As human beings, we don't see the big picture. We see the events that are unfolding in front of us, but we don't necessarily see the connection to our past, and we definitely don't see what the future holds for us because of these events (not despite them.)Rebbetzin Tzipah also addresses the question of "Why do bad things happen to good people?"To be connected to Rebbetzin Tzipah, please email Vera Kessler, host of America's Top Rebbetzins: atrebbetzins@gmail.com Vera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach. In this episode, I'm being real about the moments I've felt weak, discouraged, or honestly… just didn't feel like praying. We all have those days. But what I've learned—and what I'm still learning—is that God isn't asking us to be perfect. He's asking us to be honest.I talk about how I've wrestled with showing up to God when I felt unworthy or overwhelmed, and how those vulnerable moments became the most powerful places of connection. We dive into Philippians and the reminder that we're not meant to do this in our own strength. Prayer, peace, and mindset matter—and when we shift our focus to what is true, lovely, and praiseworthy, God meets us there. The truth is: strength doesn't come from striving—it comes from surrender. And it's in our weakest places that His grace shows up the strongest.Let this be a reminder: You don't have to have it all together to come to God. He wants the real you, right where you are.
Ever wonder what it's like to tackle one of fitness's fastest-growing challenges alone? In this revealing conversation, CrossFit Bison member Dan Greenberg @danmg1128 takes host coach David Syvertsen @davesy85 through his journey of completing the Hyrox race as a solo competitor. What makes this story particularly remarkable is Dan's comeback from a potentially career-ending back injury that required surgery just a few years prior.Dan shares how he went from being told he had "the worst squat ever seen" to becoming one of the strongest pound-for-pound athletes at his gym. His spontaneous decision to register for Hyrox came without specific training beyond his regular CrossFit routine, yet he completed the challenge with impressive consistency. Maintaining an eight-minute mile pace across eight 1000-meter runs while tackling stations including ski erg, sled push/pull, rowing, and wall balls, Dan discovered that the running portions were surprisingly easier than the strength elements for many participants. The conversation explores the fascinating logistics of Hyrox, which has grown from 700 participants in London to over 40,000 registrants worldwide in just a few years. Unlike traditional CrossFit competitions that can span entire days with significant downtime, Hyrox offers an efficient, streamlined experience with excellent spectator engagement. Dan and host David Syvertsen debate whether the event will maintain its explosive growth trajectory or follow other fitness trends that have plateaued after initial enthusiasm.Perhaps most valuable are Dan's insights about training for such events. While many assume running capacity is the primary determinant of success, Dan highlights the often-overlooked importance of strength training. The stronger you are, the less each station depletes your energy reserves for the runs. His experience proves that CrossFit provides an excellent foundation for High Rocks, though specific training for certain elements like the sled pull can make a significant difference in performance.Ready to push your fitness boundaries in a new way? The struggles we face in trying to keep the Torah and mitzvot are incredibly precious to Hashem. In fact, they are the very reason we were placed in this world. When we have to struggle to do what's right, the mitzvah we perform becomes infinitely more meaningful. At times, we might wonder, "Doesn't Hashem want me to do this? So why is it so hard?" The answer is that of courseHashem wants us to do His will, and He often makes it challenging so that we can earn even greater reward through our effort. These difficulties are not obstacles; they are expressions of Hashem's love. When we view our tests this way, it becomes easier to rise above them. One woman, who had grown tremendously along with her husband and children, was preparing for her firstborn son's bar mitzvah. The family she is raising looks very different from the families she and her husband came from. She always tries to please everyone, so the pressure of making the event work for all sides weighed heavily on her. She prayed to Hashem to give her the strength to do what she knew was right — and to do it with joy. That morning, her young daughter had a school play. Her role was to be a bat kol , a heavenly voice, and she repeated the same phrase over and over: Stay strong. It's just a test. Do what's right. Hashem will be proud of you. Sitting in the audience, the woman was moved to tears. Those words felt like they were coming directly from Hashem. They gave her the strength and clarity she needed, and that night she celebrated the bar mitzvah in the way she believed would truly make Hashem proud. When a person sacrifices so much to fulfill a mitzvah, then when something unpredictable happens, Hashem often sends hidden help to ensure they succeed. A rabbi in Israel gives a daily Daf Yomi class with nearly 30 participants. He is extremely careful never to miss a session — they learn even during the most challenging times of the year. When he travels, he always arranges a substitute well in advance. Recently, on Shabbat Parashiyot Tazria/Metzora, he had to be out of town for a simchah and arranged a replacement. On Sunday morning, he asked the substitute how the class went. The man admitted — to the rabbi's shock — that he had prepared but completely forgot to show up. Worried, the rabbi asked one of the regular participants what happened. The man said they waited a long time for the replacement, and then a rabbi who teaches alef-bet in the local yeshiva walked in. They joked, "Here's the rabbi who'll give today's daf!" The alef-bet teacher asked which daf they were up to, and they told him: the first page of Masechet Shevuot. He sat down and proceeded to teach the entire daf — completely by heart. The group was astonished. The teacher explained that this was the only daf in all of Shas he had memorized — he had reviewed it 30 times. Out of more than 2,700 pages, this was the only one he could have taught without preparation. The Rabbi who leads this daff shiur is so careful to never miss. When an unexpected obstacle arose Hashem gave heavenly assistance. He prepared the perfect substitute in advance, ensuring the shiur would not be missed. Another woman had taken on the commitment of reciting Nishmat for 40 days, always at the same time so she wouldn't forget. One day, she had time off and went on a family trip. Before leaving, she grabbed a siddur — just in case someone might need it to say Birkat Hamazon . Later, when her alarm reminded her to say Nishmat , she panicked — she didn't have the specific booklet she usually used to say Nishmat with. Then she remembered: she had brought the siddur. It became clear that Hashem had orchestrated her grabbing that siddur so she wouldn't miss a day of her commitment. The challenges we face in doing mitzvot are meant to elevate us. And sometimes, when the situation is beyond our control, Hashem sends His help — if we've done our best to uphold our part. When we show dedication and care, Hashem responds in kind, guiding and supporting us in ways we might never expect.

In today's episode, we journey together through Ecclesiastes 4–6, Psalm 18, and Ephesians 3, reflecting on the deep questions of life, contentment, and the power of God's love. Host Hunter guides us through ancient wisdom and heartfelt prayers, reminding us that though life can sometimes feel meaningless or overwhelming, we are rooted and strengthened in the immeasurable love of Christ. As we explore the scriptures, we're invited to let our hearts be encouraged, our roots sink deep into God's love, and our imaginations stirred by the beauty of the gospel. Whether you're facing joys or challenges, take a moment with us today to discover the sustaining hope and strength that comes from knowing you are truly loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Roots. If you want to grow, you have to have roots. Paul prays that you and I will sink our roots deep down into God's love. His love is where life and growth begin and where it all continues from. His love is where we grow strong. Ephesians 3:16-17 says, “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources, he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts. As you trust him, your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong.” Paul doesn't want us to merely know about this love; he wants us to go on a journey into it, to discover just how long, how wide, how high, and how deep his love really is. This love knows no limits. It can never be fully sounded. We are forever drawn into its embrace. How are your roots today? If you want to grow and have life and strength, you have to sink your roots into his love. Maybe today it's something as simple as hearing the words, “you are loved.” Is there something that keeps you from really receiving that? Is there shame or a wound? Something that stands between you and those words? Whatever comes and mutes those words and tells you they are not for you, I encourage you today to look into the face of Jesus and receive his love without interference. Today you are loved. So let your roots sink deep into Christ and find strength in him. Today there is nothing that can separate you from the love of Christ. You have been drawn into and embraced by him. You can be strong. Let the beauty of the gospel of Christ draw you further up, farther in, and find your strength in him. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Gracious and everlasting God, you have brought us through the shadow of night into the promise of a new day. You go before us with your mercy, sustain us by your grace and keep us from wandering paths of fear or pride. Let every word we speak and every step we take be formed by the goodness of Christ. O Lord, gather your people far and near. May every tribe and tongue come to know your peace. Let justice roll like a river and healing flow where there has been division. Pour out your spirit upon all flesh and bring us closer to the day when your kingdom comes in fullness through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation. In this episode, Jen and Dyana sit down with thru-hiker and author Julia Sheehan to unpack her transformative 2,190-mile journey along the Appalachian Trail. Julia opens up about the emotional and physical challenges of the hike, the experience of documenting it on social media, and the unexpected impact of going viral. She shares insights from her new book, Hiking is the Easy Part: My Journey on the Appalachian Trail, and gets candid about the pressure to stay authentic online, navigate community expectations, and filter through the noise of constant feedback.Julia has stepped foot on the Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Arizona Trail, but shares about the unique charm and magic of the Appalachian Trail. Julia also reflects on how yoga and writing her memoir became a key part of her healing—and why vulnerability is essential to meaningful storytelling. This conversation goes beyond the trail. In this deeply moving episode, I chat with Anthea about her three very different birth experiences, including a challenging third pregnancy that required months of strict bed rest during COVID lockdowns with two toddlers at home. After experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and a nine-month journey to conceive, Anthea went on to have two hospital births - Harriet via induction at 38 weeks and Florence after spontaneous labor at 37 weeks. Her third pregnancy took an unexpected turn at 12 weeks when she was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma, leading to complete bed rest until Oliver's early arrival at 34 weeks and 6 days. Anthea's story beautifully illustrates how we can find resilience we never knew we had when faced with extraordinary circumstances, and offers hope to anyone navigating pregnancy complications. ___ A birth support partner offers physical and emotional support throughout labour and birth. Your birth partner should be mentioned in your birth plan, particularly in regards to how they will advocate for you to your midwife or doctor.
