Pregnancy doesn't always go the way you imagined it would. For my dear friend and fellow SMBC, Mel Anderson, what began with excitement quickly turned into one of the hardest seasons of her life. Instead of hiking and practicing yoga through her pregnancy as she had envisioned, Mel faced hyperemesis: severe nausea and vomiting that left her unable to care for herself, barely able to eat or drink, and often confined to the bathroom floor.⚠️Before we dive in, a gentle heads up: this episode includes a detailed discussion of hyperemesis and the mental health struggles that can come with a difficult pregnancy. If you're feeling particularly anxious about pregnancy, this might not be the right episode for you. And if you're currently in the middle of a hard pregnancy yourself, please know there is relief and joy on the other side (which you'll hear about in the next episode, in which we'll continue with Mel's story). In this deeply vulnerable conversation, Mel shares what it was really like to go through pregnancy without a partner while navigating a condition that tested her body, her mental health, and her spirit. From the heartbreak of canceled embryo transfers to the unexpected challenges of her pregnancy, her story is raw, honest, and important. If you're considering solo motherhood, pregnant yourself, or simply want to know you're not alone in facing a difficult path, this conversation will remind you that strength can grow even in the hardest places. In this episode on Mel's story about her pregnancy without a partner, we discuss:Mel's path to becoming a single mother by choice after ambivalence about having children in her younger years; How Mel's relationship history played into the decision;Being diagnosed with hyperemesis and how it shaped her pregnancy;Mental health struggles and learning to advocate for herself in the medical system; The critical role of support during a high-risk pregnancy as a solo mom;Why sharing the hard stories matters just as much as sharing the joyful ones; And more.

Why is it that so many ministry leaders—people called to reflect Christ's love—so often end up burned out, disillusioned, or driven by power and platform instead of humility and service? It's heartbreaking when church leadership doesn't “smell like the gospel,” and instead resembles the very systems of profit and self-promotion it should prophetically resist. In this episode, Jason Jensen, Vice President of Spiritual Foundations for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and author of Formed to Lead, unpacks what true spiritual formation for leaders looks like, how to hold humility and faith in tension, and how suffering and the wilderness can become gifts in our ministry.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Jason Jensen observes that much leadership in the church fails to reflect the gospel and often focuses on power, platform, or profit.Large numbers of Christian leaders experience burnout or moral, character, or spiritual failure, leading to disillusionment among younger generations.Jason Jensen asserts that the Gospel of Luke presents a radically different, subversive vision of leadership, centering the vulnerable and overlooked.Leadership in God's kingdom includes all people, from parents to presidents, and turns conventional power dynamics upside down.Christian leadership requires holding together the paradox of tender humility and bold faith.Jason Jensen describes the spiritual formation of a leader as a lifelong, iterative process marked by failure, repentance, and receiving the love of God.Embracing wilderness seasons—times of pain, failure, or dryness—is essential for spiritual growth and character development.Markus Watson invites Jason Jensen to share from personal experience how suffering shaped his faith and leadership, prompting stories of transformation after injury and failure.Experiencing grief, loss, and mistakes can be some of the most formative experiences for a leader's development and empathy.Depth and authenticity in leadership are formed by embracing—not bypassing—suffering and wilderness experiences.Jason Jensen highlights Steve Hayner's example of leadership, specifically his ability to listen well, include others, and help others feel loved and safe.Steve Hayner practiced “expansive discourse” and adaptive leadership, carrying pain with others and facilitating mutual learning rather than judgment.Sustainable organizational change requires time, patience, and leaders who bring everyone to the table and foster shared purpose.Offering one's life—and even one's death—as a gift to God and others represents the culmination of a spiritual journey, embodying humility, sacrifice, and openness.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Jason Jensen:formedtolead.comInstagramXFacebookBooks mentioned:Formed to Lead, by Jason JensenRelated episodes:244. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we're talking about the idea of choosing your hard. Have you ever felt like life just keeps piling on the challenges, like no matter what direction you take, it's tough? Marriage is hard, but so is divorce. Being in debt is hard, but so is being financially disciplined. Communication is hard, but so is staying silent. The truth is, there's no easy route. But what if instead of feeling like life is happening to us, we recognized that we get to choose which hard we live with? It's tempting to believe that we've been dealt a bad hand or that everyone else has it easier. When things get hard, we can get stuck; stuck in self-pity, stuck in resentment, stuck in the belief that we don't have options. But here's the reality: every hard comes with its own kind of growth. Being fit is hard, but so is carrying the weight of poor health. Working through conflict is hard, but so is living with unresolved tension. When we stop waiting for life to be easy and start owning the hard we choose, we take back our power. I once had someone in a support group tell me, “You can't just choose to be happy. It doesn't work that way.” And I get what she meant, it isn't instant. But I believe happiness is a choice, because when you decide to lean toward joy, you're also deciding to turn away from sadness. It doesn't mean your circumstances change overnight, but your posture does. And over time, those choices add up. That's what we'll explore today: how to shift your perspective, own your decisions, and recognize that while life will never be without struggle, you do have the power to choose which struggle you embrace. When we say, “life is hard,” what do we really mean? Hard can look like stress, sacrifice, discipline, heartbreak, or persistence. Hard is waking up early to work out when you'd rather sleep in. Hard is having the difficult conversation instead of ignoring the problem. Hard is sitting with grief, or pushing through self-doubt, or choosing to budget when spending feels easier. Hard doesn't mean impossible; it means uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or requiring effort. The truth is, we don't get to opt out of difficulty. Every path comes with its own version of hard. If you avoid exercise, you might face the hard of poor health. If you avoid saving, you might face the hard of financial instability. If you avoid conflict, you might face the hard of broken relationships. The meme that inspired this episode puts it plainly: marriage is hard, divorce is hard. Choose your hard. In other words, difficulty is part of the human experience; you just get to decide which type of difficulty leads you closer to the life you want. What makes this powerful is recognizing that choice is always involved. Even when it doesn't feel like it, you are making a choice, whether it's by acting or by avoiding. Choosing your hard isn't about pretending the struggle doesn't exist. It's about asking yourself: which hard moves me toward growth, peace, or joy, and which hard keeps me stuck? Once you see that you have agency, the focus shifts from “why is this happening to me?” to “which challenge am I willing to embrace for the sake of something better?” Choose your HARD - (a short film for motivation) CHALLENGE: Take a clear look at the “hard” you're living with right now and ask yourself—did I choose this, or did I drift into it? Make one intentional choice this week to embrace the hard that moves you toward growth, even if it's uncomfortable in the moment. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Myka's road to 26.2 came with plenty of detours. After years of stopping and starting, she found her stride again on the Raleigh greenways and signed up for the Tobacco Road Marathon. Her training leaned heavy on mileage, peaking at 60 miles a week with little recovery or fueling, which left her constantly tired and wondering if that was just part of marathon prep. Race day brought its own challenges. She went out too fast, fought the mental grind of a quiet course, and leaned on the mantra “there's nothing to it but to do it” to keep moving. Family support along the way, a surprise shot at mile 19, and encouragement from a pacer all helped carry her to the finish. Having her mom there to see it made the moment even more meaningful, especially after losing her unexpectedly soon after. Now Myka is training for Richmond with lessons learned, more balance in her approach, and the drive to keep running for her mom. Follow along with the show:

Real faith doesn't show off in control—it shows up in surrender. In James 4 we face our biggest fight: the battle within. Pastor Peter unpacks why conflicts start in our desires, how pride pulls against God, and the 5 S's of surrender—Submit, Stand, Sit with God, Say “I'm sorry,” and Serve. Drop the rope, draw near to God, and plan around His will, not around your own.

Send us a textHave you ever wondered why following Christ feels more difficult than you imagined? Many believers begin their faith journey expecting blessing, protection, and victory at every turn—yet quickly discover that trials, disappointments, and hardships are often part of the Christian walk. This tension leaves many asking: “Am I doing something wrong?”The truth is, you are not failing in your faith because you are struggling. In fact, you may be walking the very path Scripture describes as authentic discipleship.Paul's Testimony: Strength in SufferingFew lives illustrate this more vividly than that of the Apostle Paul. Once Saul of Tarsus—a man of privilege, status, and influence—Paul surrendered everything when he encountered Christ on the Damascus Road. From that moment, his life was radically redefined, not by worldly success but by relentless suffering and unwavering faith. In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul catalogues his hardships: imprisonments, countless beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, sleepless nights, and constant danger. Far from being exceptions, these became his normal reality. Yet rather than weakening his faith, these trials revealed the power and sufficiency of God in ways comfort never could.Just one chapter later, Paul shares his intimate struggle with a persistent affliction—the famous “thorn in the flesh.” Despite pleading for relief, God's answer was not deliverance but revelation:“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).Paul's response has sustained believers for centuries: “When I am weak, then I am strong.”The Biblical PatternThis paradox is not unique to Paul. It runs through the entire biblical story:Moses felt inadequate to confront Pharaoh, yet God used his weakness to display His power.David, the shepherd boy, defeated Goliath not with human strength but by relying on God.Jesus Himself declared, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10).Even Christ's own journey—the cross before the resurrection—demonstrates that God's greatest victories often come through apparent defeat. What This Means for Us TodayThe message is clear: following Jesus is not a guarantee of prosperity or ease. Instead, it is a call to daily surrender, trust, and dependence. Hardship is not evidence of God's absence but the very place where His presence becomes most real. For believers navigating storms today—whether financial pressures, broken relationships, health struggles, or spiritual battles—Paul's words are a beacon of hope. Your trials are not wasted. Your weakness is not failure. It is the stage upon which God displays His strength.Living the ParadoxThis “strip-back” process—where God removes our self-sufficiency and worldly securities—deepens our reliance on Him. In the wilderness, we discover manna. In weakness, we discover grace. In suffering, we discover the felloSupport the showThank you for listening! Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! On this September 22nd episode, we mark day 265 of our journey through Scripture, with just 100 days left in the year. Today, Hunter guides us through powerful passages from Daniel 9 and 10, Psalm 123, and Luke 5. We reflect on Daniel's heartfelt prayers, angelic encounters, and the overwhelming weight of prophetic visions—reminding us of the strength we find in God's presence and touch. In Luke's Gospel, we witness the calling of the disciples, miraculous healings, and Jesus' radical message of forgiveness and new life. Join us as we meditate on God's unfailing love, receive encouragement for our challenges ahead, and center our lives on Christ's peace and mercy. Whether you're feeling strong or in need of a “second touch,” today's episode invites you to open your heart and receive the hope and strength God freely offers. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He gives us a second touch. Daniel was overwhelmed by what he saw—by the vision God gave and by the sheer enormity of what was behind and what was coming ahead. The weight of the call, the ruins of the past, the challenges of the present—all of it left Daniel saying, "My strength is gone. I can hardly breathe." Have you ever felt that way? Staring ahead at what seems impossible, or looking back at the devastation behind, and feeling paralyzed, frightened, unable to move or even catch your breath? If you've ever been there, you are not alone. Daniel was there too. But here's the miracle: God touched Daniel again. The scripture tells us, “Then the one who looked like a man touched me again, and I felt my strength returning. ‘Don't be afraid,' he said, ‘for you are very precious to God. Please be encouraged! Be strong!'” And as Daniel listened to those words, his strength came back and he was ready to listen—ready to go on. That second touch—the reassurance, the presence, the love of God—is what we all desperately need. God's love for Daniel, spoken in comfort and shown through his touch, is the same love he offers to us today. When the road ahead is daunting or when the shame of our past weighs us down, God comes near, offering not just guidance but the very presence and strength we cannot conjure up ourselves. Do you need a second touch from God? Open your hands, even now. Whisper, “Yes, Lord. Thank You.” Let His love, His touch, restore you. His word to Daniel is His word to you: Don't be afraid. You are precious to God. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. It's a prayer I have for my family—for my wife and my daughters and my son. And it's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. From the moment the weather turned to rain, hail, and near-freezing temps, this race tested every ounce of grit and determination. A soul-deep moment where the mask falls off, the pretending stops, and we come face-to-face with truth. And though it may feel like loss, it is, in fact, the foundation of freedom. In this episode, we'll explore:• The Courage to Admit: What does it mean to truly own our powerlessness? And how can surrender become our greatest act of strength?• The Mirror of the Mind: We'll dive into the psychological dynamics of unmanageability—how distorted thinking keeps us stuck, and how awareness can ignite healing.• The Spirit's Whisper: Beyond willpower lies a deeper strength. We'll talk about embracing divine help, and how grace meets us when we finally let go.This message isn't about theory. It's lived. It's raw. It's real. And it just might be the permission someone needs to stop surviving and start rising. So wherever you are in your journey, whether you're deep in the trenches or just beginning to wonder if change is possible—this space is for you. When Grace Myers laces up her running shoes, she's not checking her GPS watch or loading up on the latest sports nutrition—she's tapping into something more fundamental. On this episode of The Hobby Jogger, we meet a runner who qualified for Boston Marathon without using a single calorie of race fuel, who pushed strollers through training runs until the tires literally wore out, and who found her way back to the trails after surviving a terrifying assault.Grace's running journey spans over two decades, beginning as a 13-year-old running loops in her parents' yard. Her unconventional approach continued when she qualified for Boston Marathon at the challenging Akron course, only to miss the adjusted qualifying time by one second. In a remarkable twist, Sam Adams Beer Company offered her a sponsored entry—though COVID ultimately transformed her Boston experience into a virtual run around her neighborhood. The conversation takes a powerful turn as Grace courageously shares the story of being assaulted during a run just over a year ago. With remarkable candor, she discusses how this traumatic experience changed her relationship with running without breaking it. "I didn't want that taken from me as well," she explains, describing how important it was to remain the same person her children had always known despite the trauma.Today, Grace has found renewed joy in trail running, recently tackling the challenging first leg of the Laurel Highlands Trail relay and contemplating her first 50K ultramarathon. Drawing strength from her Polish heritage and the example of her grandfather who ran into his seventies, she embodies a resilient spirit that sees running not as a competitive pursuit but as a lifelong companion through all of life's challenges.Whether you're a seasoned runner or just beginning your journey, Grace's story reminds us that running offers not just physical benefits but profound emotional resilience.
