Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week: Our guest is master musician, UNICEF Ambassador and friend of the show Cobhams Asuquo. In this interview - recorded down the line from his home in Lagos earlier this month - Cobhams shares with us his excitement about the release of his new material. The show features exclusive pre-release snippets of forthcoming single Elephant Man - which marks a radical change in artistic direction for Cobhams. His new sound is a bit more edgy. If you're familiar with Cobhams' work, you may be shocked by the Afrobeat rhythms, lyrics that include mentions of Bentleys and Ferraris and Mr Asuquo boasting of the ‘ice' hanging from his neck. But in his own inimitable way, Cobhams is using this musical vocabulary to put across a positive social message. Just because he's blind doesn't mean that he doesn't like nice things. What's more, he's come by these nice things through determination and hard work. And he's enjoying those things in a totally wholesome way. Responsibly. Who knows, he may even inspire other people living with a vision impairment to be as ambitious and to express themselves As Cobhams says in the interview: “This is not the life that's expected of a blind person in Africa… To get in front of the microphone, to maybe hold a blinged out mic… It's a little daring. ‘How dare you! You're blind! Tell us about how the world should be a better place.'.... I'm going to tell you that, but I also need you to know that when you pay me for telling you how the world should be a better place, sometimes I have a good time and I want you to see that.” What do you think of the message behind Cobhams' new music? Will you be adopting his “wholesome hip-hop” approach to life?
