Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week: Our guest is master musician, UNICEF Ambassador and friend of the show Cobhams Asuquo. In this interview - recorded down the line from his home in Lagos earlier this month - Cobhams shares with us his excitement about the release of his new material. The show features exclusive pre-release snippets of forthcoming single Elephant Man - which marks a radical change in artistic direction for Cobhams. His new sound is a bit more edgy. If you're familiar with Cobhams' work, you may be shocked by the Afrobeat rhythms, lyrics that include mentions of Bentleys and Ferraris and Mr Asuquo boasting of the ‘ice' hanging from his neck. But in his own inimitable way, Cobhams is using this musical vocabulary to put across a positive social message. Just because he's blind doesn't mean that he doesn't like nice things. What's more, he's come by these nice things through determination and hard work. And he's enjoying those things in a totally wholesome way. Responsibly. Who knows, he may even inspire other people living with a vision impairment to be as ambitious and to express themselves  As Cobhams says in the interview: “This is not the life that's expected of a blind person in Africa… To get in front of the microphone, to maybe hold a blinged out mic… It's a little daring. ‘How dare you! You're blind! Tell us about how the world should be a better place.'.... I'm going to tell you that, but I also need you to know that when you pay me for telling you how the world should be a better place, sometimes I have a good time and I want you to see that.”    What do you think of the message behind Cobhams' new music? Will you be adopting his “wholesome hip-hop” approach to life? Sharona Franklin's jelly sculptures may look delicious but they are grand artworks that she makes to tackle her experience of the world as a disabled person. Confronting the fragility of the human body, and the complicated relationship she has with biopharmaceuticals and medicines, her work is made from her small home in Vancouver, where she feels safe to explore, make and rest her body as much as she needs - essential for her health, but all too often ignored by arts institutions. She talks to the Cultural Frontline about her work, and some of the barriers she faces as a disabled artist. From his studio in Lagos Nigeria, renowned singer-songwriter and UNICEF ambassador Cobhams Asuquo tells us how his blindness contributes to his heightened sense of musicality, and how he overcame widespread prejudices in the music industry to become a household name. Can we make arts truly accessible for all? As much of the world faced lockdown as a result of Covid 19 and people began to talk about the difficulties of not being able to visit museums, theatres and exhibitions, many disabled people have taken this moment to highlight that they have never been able to access these spaces due to their needs being continually ignored. Two disabled artists, Bella Milroy and Diana Niepce, talk to the Cultural Frontline about their experiences of inaccessibility in the arts world, and what needs to change. Performing Ben E. King's iconic song Stand by Me, a group of disabled artists from 15 countries have come together virtually to record a music video as part of the True Colours Festival. Raising awareness of how disabled people have been affected by the pandemic, we hear from two performers in Singapore and Australia about why they want to be involved. Lagos and the Rise of Nigerian Afrobeats Heavy, percussive club beats with irresistible hooks and street-wise raps in Yoruba, Igbo or pidgin English—Nigerian pop music, increasingly known by the much-debated term Afrobeats, is the sound that moves Lagos and the sound of Lagos that moves the world. But it wasn’t always this way! Starting in the early 1990s, a new musical movement was born in Nigeria. Ten years into a series of military dictatorships that almost completely destroyed the Nigerian music industry, artists including Junior & Pretty, the Remedies and Plantashun Boiz brought a new, youth-centric style drawing heavily on r&b, hip-hop and reggae, with plenty of local style. Twenty years later, this music has exploded from the margins to the Nigerian mainstream and grown into an international pop music phenomenon, spreading across the African continent and influencing U.S. and U.K. tastes. Musical, political, cultural, technological and economic developments have turned the sound of Lagos pop music into a massive industry of artists, labels, radio and television stations, video directors, PR firms and more. We’ll hear the story of the birth and development of this scene straight from the influential and foundational figures who lived it, including 2Face Idibia (2Baba), DJ Jimmy Jatt, Sound Sultan, Eedris Abdulkareem, and Kenny Ogungbe of the legendary Kennis Music label and Ray Power FM. We will also hear from current stars including Iyanya, Yemi Alade, Adekunle Gold and Flavour, visit Clarence Peter’s music video studio, and hear from the producers who define the sound, including Young John, Ikon and Cobhams Asuquo. Heavy, percussive club beats with irresistible hooks and street-wise raps in Yoruba, Igbo or pidgin English—Nigerian pop music, increasingly known by the much-debated term Afrobeats, is the sound that moves Lagos and the sound of Lagos that moves the world.
