Ranked sometimes into Jō (upper) Chuu (middle) and Shita (lower) levels.Motoya 酛屋 - The person in charge of making the moto fermentation starter.Muroya 室屋 - The person in charge of making kōji in the kōjimuro.Oya or Oyabun 親・親分 - Literally “parent/father,” used as a term of address for people high up in a traditional organization, like a sake brewery.Sanyaku 三役 - The three major ranks/roles of a traditional organization, most commonly used these days in reference to the Sumo ranks of Ozeki, Sekiwaki, and Komusubi. Send us a textEpisode 138- Sandra St. Victor, an American singer-songwriter, is celebrated for her powerful voice and genre-defying artistry. Born Sandra Kay Matthews on May 28, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, she nurtured her musical talents at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, an institution that also nurtured artists like Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, and Edie Brickell. She furthered her studies with scholarships to Kansas University and Bishop College in Dallas but ultimately chose to learn through experience, joining a local band led by jazz guitarist Zachary Breaux and embarking on tours across Texas and Louisiana.In the early 1980s, St. Victor relocated to New York City, where she joined Roy Ayers' touring band, Ubiquity. Her dynamic performances caught the attention of Chaka Khan, leading to a tour with Khan throughout the 1980s. She also toured with Freddie Jackson and Glenn Jones and became a sought-after session vocalist, collaborating with artists like Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Audrey Wheeler, Brenda White King, Tawatha Agee, and Curtis King. Her versatility and distinctive voice made her a prominent figure in the New York music scene.St. Victor, the lead singer of The Family Stand, a trio formed in the late 1980s with Peter Lord Moreland and Vernon Jeffrey Smith, achieved international success. Their hit song “Ghetto Heaven” reached #10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1990 and was remixed by Nellee Hooper and Jazzy B of Soul II Soul. The group also contributed to Paula Abdul's album Spellbound.In 1993, St. Victor embarked on a solo career and recorded the album Sanctuary for Elektra Records, though it remained unreleased. Several tracks from the album were later covered by artists like Prince, Chaka Khan, and Tina Turner. In 1996, she released Mack Diva Saves the World on Warner Bros., which received critical acclaim but lacked significant radio support.St. Victor continued her solo work with the independent release Gemini: Both Sides in 2001. In 2013, she released Oya's Daughter on Shanachie Entertainment, produced by Mark de Clive-Lowe. Today's episode is a discussion with writer and journalist Una Mullally about artist boycotts, solidarity, Palestine, Israel, protest, cancellation, capitalism and the music industry. We talk about how Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people has become a flashpoint of awareness about how modern music festivals work, specifically how private equity which invests in Israel operates in the live music industry. We chat about why Kneecap's recent actions have drawn so much ire and anger in the US and the UK, leading to the expedited terror charge of Mo Chara on June 18th, and calls (often successful) for cancellation of their shows. Festivals owned by global events company Superstruct who own 80 festivals and brands like Sonar, Sziget, Boiler Room, Oya, Field Day and Mighty Hoopla have had artists cancel in boycott of Superstruct's owner KKR, the second largest private equity firm in the world, who have documented ties to both weapons manufacturers and Israeli companies developing data centres and advertising real estate on illegally occupied land. It feels like an unprecedented time for the visibility of protest and boycott by artists in recent years. A generational shift is happening - Artists and DJs are showing moral opposition in this complicity in the face of political inaction. Lines are being drawn.

Fellow Nigerians, Aakansha Jain speaks pidgin. She said, “Oya,” and it was perfect. Aakansha moved to Nigeria from India as a teeny weeny kid. She remembers her father telling her she struggled to settle in and cried a lot because everyone looked different. But over time, Nigeria became home. Then, she had to move back to India, and it was tough. "I had to prove how Indian I am every day," she says. She moved to Australia four years ago and can't believe how easy it was for her to settle into the Australian culture. She posits that it's probably because a considerable proportion of the population are immigrants, and they understand what it means to feel like one. This episode was assigned to me by Spirit a few nights after returning from Sharm and the first Hold Us Sacred Retreat. It is a tribute to MarleyAyo, and eulogy of sorts, that I believe Oya, compelled me to record and rewatch to aid me in my own grieving process, and to give me full permission and power to rebuild MarleyAyo from my deepest desires and knowing.
