African music has never been more popular. Afrobeats, Amapiano, and other African sounds are reaching audiences across the world, generating billions of streams and reshaping global culture. But who is really benefiting? In this episode of The Long Form Podcast, Audiomack Co-Founder and CMO David Ponte discusses the rise of African music, the economics of streaming, why many artists still struggle to make money, what global platforms misunderstand about African audiences, and what it takes to build a technology company capable of competing with Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. We also explore why some African artists break through globally while others remain local, and what the future holds for music, technology, and culture on the continent.Sponsors:Threat Informat - https://threatinformant.io/ Akagera Medicines- https://www.akageramedicines.com African Languages Experts: https://africanlanguagesexperts.comJoin our Patreon to enjoy ad-free viewing https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheLongFormPod or support us via our MTN Mobile Money Code 95462 or directly to our phone number: +250795462739Visit Sanny Ntayombya's Official Website: https://sannyntayombya.comProduced by LF Media

Jon Muq on Captive Audiences, Culture Shock in Austin, and Writing Joyful Songs | Curious Goldfish (30A Songwriters Fest)At the 30A Songwriters Festival, host Jason English interviews Ugandan-born, Austin-based musician Jon Muq about his unusual path into music and life in the U.S. Jon describes learning English through singing, first to homeless children in Uganda and later as a cruise-ship performer building a 250+ song repertoire, plus how “We Are the World” sparked his belief his voice could “fit in a tune.” He recounts arriving in Austin for a refugee fundraiser during SXSW, navigating community and dating culture differences, and developing his English fluency through music. Jon discusses his debut English album "Flying Away," including writing “Butterflies,” his moment-driven songwriting approach for a second album, his philosophy of posting content without chasing metrics, and launching the Afrobeats-focused label/event project Shake It Africa, while reflecting on stress, authenticity, and the future of the music industry amid new technology.00:00 Wild Austin First Date01:06 Podcast Intro And Guest Setup03:10 30A Festival Vibes05:15 Back To Uganda After Years07:02 Music As Language Training08:04 Singing For Street Kids09:25 We Are The World Spark11:48 Cruise Ship Bootcamp13:23 Landing In Austin By Chance16:03 Finding Community In Austin16:55 Community and Offense17:26 Dating Culture Shock19:12 Connection Versus Work19:46 Visa and First Gigs20:24 Flying Away Album21:45 Butterflies Backstory23:05 Writing in the Moment25:28 Artist Mindset and Ambition26:57 Happy Songs and Stress28:44 Content Pressure and Identity30:34 Shake It Africa Plans32:07 Curiosity and Future Tech34:01 Runaway Live Performance

Despite a career that has sold more than 30 million records and a catalog that could allow him to retire comfortably, Keith Sweat says he keeps working to set an example for his children. He believes his work ethic teaches future generations that success comes through hard work, not entitlement. Known for helping pioneer the New Jack Swing era with his groundbreaking 1987 debut Make It Last Forever, Sweat continues to push himself creatively. While he enjoys a simple life filled with friends, family, and relaxing at home, he's still focused on expanding his musical legacy. Keith revealed that he's currently preparing to release three projects at once—an R&B album, an Afrobeat album, and a Southern Soul album featuring artists like King George, Calvin Richardson, and potentially Anthony Hamilton. Rather than chasing trends, Sweat says he's proving he can succeed across multiple genres while continuing to build on a legacy that has already stood the test of time.

In which the Curmudgeons express awe and amazement over the musical innovation and rebellious spirit of one Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti. Already an established jazz-fusion bandleader in his native Nigeria, a nearly year long stay in Los Angeles in 1969 exposed Kuti to the thrilling sounds of that era's soul and funk music and to the rage and purpose behind the politics of Black empowerment. Kuti returned home reinvigorated and over the course of the 1970s, he proceeded to fashion what we now call Afrobeat, writing and performing marathon-length compositions that spliced funk, R&B, jazz and Afro-Cuban music with the polyrhythmic Yoruba beats of his homeland. Kuti thrusted rousing horn punches, electric-piano sensuality and especially lush and glorious saxophone solos into the world's consciousness. And he became more furious and more targeted in his criticisms of African colonialism, imperialism and governmental corruption--to the point the Nigerian government burned down his commune and, later, imprisoned him on trumped-up charges. Kuti's resultant suffering and defiance through it all became a rallying cry for justice among the Western world, helping him transcend his status as a musical visionary into something entirely more heroic. We explore the best of Fela Kuti's music and meditate on his lasting influence during this episode. Enjoy the music of Fela Kuti by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7jmPzVgNCI1252H9b19UhJ?si=3fcbe59f198346bb Here is a handy navigational companion to this episode. Nan epizòd sa a, Carel Pedre resevwa Kelly Krow, yon atis ayisyen k ap evolye nan Montréal, Kanada, ki rive fè plizyè milyon "plays" sou Spotify san li pa bezwen fè gwo bri. Kelly pataje istwa li, soti nan kòmansman li nan rap an 2012 rive nan tranzisyon li fè nan Afrobeat ak Konpa an 2017.Kelly Krow pale de defi li jwenn kòm atis endepandan nan dyaspora a, enpòtans fanmi li nan karyè li, ak fason li jere balans ant lavi père de famille ak lavi atis. Li ban nou detay tou sou pwochen albòm li k ap vini an ak istwa dèyè dènye chante pèsonèl li a ki rele "Kenbe m", ki dedye pou madanm li. The tower of groove, curated jams, and the spaces in between. Grant Schroff (Polyrhythmics, Champagne Bubblebath) Polyrhythmics & Adryon de León “Got to Be for Something” Single- https://synesthesia.ffm “Polyrhythmics sound originated in Seattle's underground deep funk scene combining impossibly tight grooves with bold brass and hypnotic percussion that showcased elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat which defined the instrumental group's early era sound. Now on their thirteenth year as a recording project and touring ensemble, the band's sound continues to evolve following six full length albums, several EPs and live releases. The virtuosic musicianship and musical conversation built on a relentless touring schedule of the previous decade has led them to a brand of psych-funk that fills a room with an impending mood where anything could happen - sometimes evoking their brighter and cinematic Fela-influences, but also a more sinister and darker turn toward a more progressive sonic palette.” https://www.polyrhythmics.com/about Polyrhythmics: Bandcamp: https://polyrhythmics.bandcamp.com Instagram: @polyrhymics Website: https://www.polyrhythmics.com Merch: https://www.hellomerch.com Champagne Bubblebath: Bandcamp: https://champagnebubblebath.bandcamp.com Instagram: @champagne.bubblebath Website: https://linktr.ee/champagnebubblebath Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thevineyardpodcast
