Subscribe to Fela Kuti: Fear No Man. In a world that's on fire, what is the role of art? What can music actually…do? Can a song save a life? Change a law? Topple a president? Get you killed? In Fela Kuti: Fear No Man, Jad Abumrad—creator of Radiolab, More Perfect, and Dolly Parton's America—tells the story of one of the great political awakenings in music: how a classically trained 'colonial boy' traveled to America, in search of Africa, only to return to Nigeria and transform his sound into a battering ram against the state—creating a new musical language of resistance called Afrobeat. For years, the world's biggest stars made pilgrimages to Nigeria to experience Fela's Shrine, the epicenter of his musical revolution. But when the mix of art and activism got too hot, the state pulled out its guns, and literally opened fire. Fela Kuti: Fear No Man is an uncategorizable mix of oral history, musicology, deep dive journalism, and cutting edge sound design that takes listeners deep inside Fela's life, music, and legacy. On this episode of JOI Podcast, the boys return with another round of authentic, unfiltered conversations. We started off with the Hallelujah Challenge, breaking down how it has evolved over the years and the cultural impact it continues to have across the diaspora. From there, we dove deep into a tough but necessary discussion on why many Africans say they “can't just go back home,” touching on economics, infrastructure, opportunity, and identity. The conversation then shifted to the trending news of Davido's political appointment, analyzing the symbolism, the timing, and what it might mean for celebrity influence in governance. We also explored how the UK market has played a major role in pushing Afrobeats to global dominance, and why London continues to be the bridge between African sound and worldwide recognition.Of course — as always — we wrapped it all up with a few other trending topics, jokes, debates, and those classic JOI hot takes. It's real, insightful, and entertaining from start to finish.

Sonny Roberts, a Jamaican carpenter, arrived in Britain in the 1950s. It was a time of racial disharmony, including the Notting Hill riots and the murder of Kelso Cochrane. In this tense atmosphere, black musicians struggled to make a name for themselves. Then in 1961, Roberts set up the UK's first black-owned music studio, Planetone, in a basement in Kilburn. The studio gave the Caribbean community a musical platform. In later years, Roberts produced Nigerian band Nkengas' album, Destruction - one of the earliest examples of Afrobeat in the UK. His 1987 production of Judy Boucher's Can't Be with You Tonight reached number two in the UK Singles Chart, beaten only by Madonna. Roberts laid the foundations for black British music. Ben Henderson speaks to his daughter, Cleon Roberts. This programme contains outdated and offensive language.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: Sonny Roberts in 1982. What happens when the feature isn't just a guest, but the gravitational force that reshapes a song's destiny? This week, we go back to Season 3, and Matt and Sam dive into 12 tracks where the featured artist is bigger than the headliner and map the creative ripple effects—from credibility boosts and audience crossovers to subtle vocal weaves that change how a story is told. It's a tour through hip-hop, rock, alt-pop, Latin hits, Afrobeats, and EDM, spotlighting the different ways a feature can blend, dominate, or transform. We start with Blackstreet's No Diggity and Dr. Dre's stamp of authority, then jump to Gorillaz and Bad Bunny's Tormenta where the guest becomes the lead energy. Bruce Springsteen's appearance on Bleachers' Chinatown shows how a legend can enhance without overshadowing. The Black Keys and ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons fuse blues weight with modern grit, while Big Sean's No Favors taps Eminem's verbal whirlwind to re-center the track. The Pretty Reckless bring Tom Morello for a late-song solo that explodes the arrangement, and The National's The Alcott with Taylor Swift is a masterclass in narrative duet balance. We revisit two global juggernauts—Despacito's crossover with Justin Bieber and the time-capsule case of Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus—to show how co-signs can bridge genres and break charts. Dominic Fike's collaboration with Weezer reframes alt DNA, Burna Boy's Monsters You Made with Chris Martin pairs stadium warmth with sharp political commentary, and Flume's Tiny Cities with Beck turns bright production into bittersweet reflection. Along the way, we explore questions of authorship, credit, and why certain features open doors to entire scenes.1. No Diggity (feat. Dr Dre & Queen Pen) by Blackstreet2. Tormenta (feat. Drawing from over 200 interviews with Fela Kuti's family, friends, as well as scholars, activists, and luminaries like Burna Boy, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Santigold, and former President Barack Obama (just to name a few), Fela Kuti: Fear No Man journeys deep into the soul of Afrobeat to explore the transformative power of art and the role artists can play in this current moment of global unrest.
