I think I speak for everyone when I say: yeah, sure, I guess that was soccer. Travis is back and he joins Darren and Vince to break down LAFC's 1-0 victory/loss against Colorado. This one's got everything: the pod officially turns on Giroud, Delgado officially turns on Carson, and the announcer officially turns on his Spanish pronunciation when he says Palenthia. Speaking of Palencia, wooooof, it's about to get ugly, as a scandal around him saying a slur will almost definitely be what people remember about this one. But despite it all, this post-game was a fun one. Hello Rank Squad! It's nearly time for kick-off in MLS' 30th season, so we thought it was the right time to sit down and take a look at how things are shaping up ahead of a landmark campaign. We start with Dean's new hometown club of San Diego FC, examining how the 30th franchise in the league are looking ahead of their maiden voyage in the Western Conference; before moving things on to the contenders to challenge for the Supporters' Shield, and, later on, MLS Cup. We examine reigning champions LA Galaxy, their crosstown rivals Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders in the West, with a word to the San Jose Earthquakes; before heading over East to take a peek at Supporters' Shield holders Inter Miami, big-spending Atlanta United, a new era at FC Cincinnati, and the Dean Smith evolutions at Charlotte FC. Finally, we move onto the individual players and new signings who could make all the difference, from 2024 MVP Lionel Messi, through the fresh strikers of Emmanuel Latte Lath and Kevin Denkey, Wilfried Zaha at Charlotte, the returning Miguel Almiron, a big intra-league transfer in Evander, and many more. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
On this episode, Ted and Patrick discuss the many strikers that have been linked to Arsenal. Is the answer Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, or someone else? Next, Erling Haaland signed an extension with Manchester City until 2034. Why did both City and Haaland choose to get this deal done? Then comes Romain Esse's move to Crystal Palace. Have Palace gotten enough credit for their recent decision making? The conversation moves to Rayan Cherki, with the hosts trying to find the best league and team for the talented, but hard to work with, Frenchman. The episode ends with discussion of the weekends Premier League games, Liverpool stepping on the gas, and how Manchester United fans should feel. Stick around to see Patrick and Ted discuss Ralph Lauren, Coco Channel, and just how hot Olivier Giroud is.Subscribe to our FREE newsletter: https://www.thetransferflow.com/subscribeJoin Variance Betting: https://www.thetransferflow.com/upgradeFollow us on our Socials:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe1WTKOt7byrELQcGRSzu1QX: https://x.com/TheTransferFlowBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/thetransferflow.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetransferflow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@transferflowpodcastTimestamps:00:00 - Intro01:56 - Strikers linked to Arsenal02:38 - What Arsenal need and don't need04:58 - The type of player that fits their squad06:01 - Does Victor Osimhen make sense?07:22 - Why Osimhen is still at Napoli + what will they do with him08:54 - What is a good price for Osimhen?10:43 - Negatives with Osmihen?12:09 - What about Benjamin Sesko?14:42 - Lower shot volume since moving to Germany a worry?15:51 - Is targeting pre-peak players a risk?19:10 - Erling Haaland's big extension with Man City20:24 - City's perspective for making this happen22:46 - Perspective from Haaland's side24:59 - Could this hurt City in the long run?26:44 - If Barcelona did this with Messi27:45 - Champagne and Oysters for Fulham28:28 - Ted and Patrick's train beer preferences30:09 - Romain Esse to Crystal Palace31:30 - A good bet for the future32:38 - Tottenham and Archie Gray33:33 - Do Palace get enough credit?34:42 - Glasner's potential to be a top coach36:53 - Rayan Cherki available to leave Lyon37:35 - A talented but difficult to work with footballer39:41 - He's the type of player you dream for as a fan40:47 - He needs to be on a team that can keep him focused41:31 - The best league and team for him43:04 - What club will make the next coaching move?43:58 - Liverpool have stepped on the gas46:08 - How good Virgil Van Dijk and Konate are46:34 - The champions league race + how United fans should feel48:32 - Behind the scenes (is Giroud hot, double denim, and Coco Channel) Hosted on Acast. The King has returned! For the first time since 2023, Carlos Vela is back on the pitch for LAFC! For the 10th time in two years, LAFC takes on Vancouver. One of those things we love, the other not so much, but we talk about it all on Episode 335!LAFC, as they have done for much of the last two seasons, dominated a lesser-talented Vancouver side over the course of 90+ minutes. A penalty goal by Denis after great combination play from Bogusz and Giroud set the tone for the first half, putting LAFC up 1-0. Just before the hour mark, excellent build-up and ball movement allowed Cristian Olivera to double the leads. LAFC looked to be cruising when, in the 86', Carlos Vela jogged over to the bench after warming up in front of the North End, signaling the return of El Rey!Neither Mateusz Bogusz hitting the woodwork twice nor a late, stoppage-time goal for Vancouver could damper the mood at BMO. Our #10 was back, LAFC takes the first playoff match of 2024, and now... we play Vancouver again. Oy.Also on the pod, CWM Woodwork is a thing. Not really sure how to explain it, but you'll understand after listening to Episode 335. Enjoy!
On Episode 334, Filly and Scarf recap an absolutely unbelievable Decision Day, both at BMO and in Houston! The subs save the day in LA while a former Carsonite sinks their ship at the death! It was a roller coaster of emotions for about 15 minutes, but LAFC comes out on top in the West as we get set to kick off the Western Conference Playoffs!Things looked bleak for the first 45' for LAFC, as an early goal by Jackson Yueill, off an ill-advised pass from Eddie Segura, gave the road side a lead and meant that LAFC would need at least three on the day. Another offside goal from Giroud and an anemic first half attack (0 shots on target) sent the club into the halftime break down a goal. But in Houston, an Ezequiel Ponce goal just before the halftime whistle saw the home side take the lead, and left everything to play for at BMO!LAFC opened the second half a little better, but it was just after the hour mark that LAFC truly woke up. A Denis Bouanga banger off a great Tillman cross leveled things at home, and the reinforcements came on soon after. Kei Kamara, Eduard Atuesta, and, later, Marlon, would all factor in the win. Atuesta's first few touches were magic, as he took a great 1-2 ball from Kei and rocketed it home past Daniel to give LAFC the 2-1 lead! With Aaron Long cramping in the 80', the Carlos Vela homecoming was put on hold, as LAFC used their 5th sub to bring on Marlon for Long. Serendipity doesn't always announce itself right away, but it would take Marlon just 10 minutes to become an LAFC hero! Off a great Atuesta free kick, Marlon, running in the same channel as Chanot, got his head to the cross and flicked it past Daniel and into the back of the net to give LAFC the 2-goal advantage it needed to move into 1st in the West! With our result secure, everyone turned to their phones, and turned into Dynamo fans! Alas, hopes were dashed in the 6th minute of stoppage time, as a Puig penalty call turned into a Pec rocket, and the score was leveled at 1. With the top spot seemingly gone, LAFC had to hope for a miracle, and we got one in the form of Burbank's own Daniel Steres! An 11th-minute stoppage-time header gave Houston an improbable 2-1 win, and handed LAFC the top spot in the West. It was an unreal scene at BMO!Also on this episode, we remember jewelry made from a plane and wish our LAFC2 boys well in their first playoff match. What a night at BMO! Now, as Ilie said, "the best is yet to come!"
In the words of Daniel, "3 points. Nothing else matters. On to the next." But BOY WAS I ANGRY AT THAT REF. Giroud's beautiful first MLS goal was called off, Bouanga had a classic BB, Olivera did something with his head we don't have to ever talk about again. and This postgame had everything: Vince in front of a hot dog, Darren reiterating how much Open Cup means to us, Travis finally explaining the podcast polycule, and fan favorite Miss Bones in the flesh. Wait...do skeletons have flesh? So much for tuning up and getting in form for the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final. LAFC drops their road match to Dallas, 3-1, behind another lackluster performance amid roster rotation. LAFC may not have won a match in their last 5, but a chance to win a trophy comes to BMO on Wednesday, in the form of SKC. Let's chat about it on Episode 328.An awful turnover right to the feet of Dallas' best goal scorer, Petar Musa, sees the home side take a 1-0 lead into the half. LAFC looked to stem the tide at the hour mark, subbing on Bouanga and Giroud, but in the next few minutes that followed, all hell broke loose for the Black and Gold. Two goals in two minutes from Dallas saw the lead balloon to 3, and if not for an Atuesta goal late, LAFC would be shut out by Texas for a third straight match.LAFC turns its focus to the Open Cup Final on Wednesday, and everyone looked to come out of this one injury-free. It should be an interesting atmosphere at BMO for the mid-week matchup. Also on this episode, Filly is in a fighting mood as Scarf recalls the club's history with Hello Kitty. Enjoy 328!
Filly and Scarf are back for Episode 327, as LAFC's winless streak hits 4 with a home draw against Austin. Back at BMO, LAFC misses an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot but definitely doesn't miss a chance to welcome back Carlos Vela!LAFC played an excellent first half defensively... right up until it didn't. One mistake by Aaron Long, one pass by Bukari, and one shot on target was all Austin needed to take a lead into the locker room. An hour in, LAFC brings on Ilie and the teenager, David Martinez, and it pays dividends. Giroud, Atuesta, and Hollingshead combine for a great buildup, finding a streaking Martinez in the box to make it 1-1. Hugo did what he needed to to preserve a point, but LAFC couldn't find the winner and the match ended in a draw. Also on this episode, we thank the Miknuk family for being amazing, look ahead at the rest of the MLS regular season, and break down Carlos Vela's contract. Enjoy 327!
David Martinez: THIS IS YOUR CITY. Travis and Darren break down that BARN BURNER of a draw between LAFC and a depleted Austin roster. We talk Giroud's slow start with the team, Dolo's tactical changes, and of course, Carlos Vela being trotted out seconds before kickoff. Then we give an 18 year old car buying advice (IT WAS SATIRICAL ADVICE) because that's the type of game it was. Also a dog called in!
