From a desperate existence in a Victorian freak show to his days as the toast of London high society, the life of John Merrick, the Elephant Man, has fascinated the world for well over a century. Though his disfigurement brought notoriety, it was his unblemished inner humanity that most astonished everyone he knew. Berkshire Theatre Group presents Bernard Pomerance's Tony Award-winning drama, “The Elephant Man,” May 28 - June 15 at the Unicorn Theatre in Stockbridge, MA.

In this episode, we explore The Elephant Man, David Lynch's haunting yet compassionate portrayal of John Merrick, a severely disfigured man in Victorian England. Join The Dale, Cea, and Twan as we review the film's themes of humanity, dignity, and the societal response to physical difference. From its powerful performances to its amazing black-and-white cinematography, we discuss why this 1980 classic resonates today. Join us as we break down the emotional and ethical questions at the heart of this unforgettable film.
“I'M NOT AN ANIMAL! I'M A HUMAN BEING!”As you may already know, we lost one of the great ones this year. In honor of David Lynch, we decided to go back to one of the earlier films in his career, The Elephant Man from 1980, starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, a critical and commercial success in what would have been David Lynch's second film and put a lot of eyes on his future, incredibly influential body of work. However, despite Lynch being Austin's favorite director of all time, he has never seen The Elephant Man! Well, on this episode, we fix that. The Elephant Man is not known to be an incredibly surreal film, but we discuss the various similarities and signature iconography Lynch can't help but include in all his films, including The Elephant Man. We talk about the use of dreams, the use of sound, and how his sense of humor shines through in a film that more linear than his other body of work.We also talk about how the film approaches the topic of how society treats an outcast with a deformity/disability. It's not uncommon for the Academy to pay attention to this genre of film, but something about The Elephant Man is very different. What might be contrived and cliche in other films feels deeply moving in this one. How does The Elephant Man stand out and distinguish itself from “Oscar bait“ films? We also talk about the way the film was made and how the film differs from the reality of life for Joseph Merrick, the real life person who lived with this condition that lead people to refer to him as The Elephant Man. How does David Lynch go from making a surrealist art film, Eraserhead, to a narratively linear biopic that tugs on the heart? How does comedy legend Mel Brooks go from making Blazing Saddles to producing The Elephant Man? How did a babysitter get her boyfriend nominated for an Oscar? How did this movie invent an entirely new category the Academy had to pay attention to? We talk about all of this and more! This episode was very special for us and took a little bit of time to brew. With the changes in technology one would think more films would be more accessible to view at our convenience, but in fact that not the case for some films that are culturally significant like The Elephant Man. As of recording the episode we couldn't find the film digitally streaming/renting anywhere, but with luck we did manage to find the film on DVD at a reasonable price. After watching the film we might actually spring for that premium Criterion Collection version, because this film really is that special. In fact, the late John Hurt said in the making of documentary “If anyone isn't moved by the end of the film, I don't think I'd want that person in my life.“ We hope you enjoy this episode and seek the film out yourself, or hit us up about a potential screening!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

In this week's tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a truly legendary artist, director, and filmmaker. He turned suburbia, teen angst, and small town life into objects of horror, admiration, and pity. Genius, artist, and madman… It's David Lynch! While Lynch had little interest in schoolwork growing up, a love for painting brought him to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He would later shock the movie business with a student film in response to the madness of America in the days of Vietnam. With a career spanning over five decades, Lynch is known for his incredibly vivid, unforgettable, and dreamlike films including Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), and more. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2006, an Academy Honorary Award, and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for surrealist horror-mystery series Twin Peaks. Dhruv and Cris take a minor detour from the endlessly mysterious world(s) of David Lynch to a somewhat more familiar one in their second (of they don't know how many) eps on David Lynch. And joining them is a returning guest, Arijit Paul, who is thankful to Lynch (especially his work in "Eraserhead") for not only inspiring him to pursue a career in (film) sound but also for validating his love for cigarettes. We listen to Arijit's wonderfully strange stories of discovering Lynch and the strange memories his films inspire in him before talking in detail about one of Lynch's more "conventional" movies -- "The Elephant Man" (1980), which both Dhruv and Cris are decidedly more mixed on than Arijit. Listen to the full episode to hear them talk about why they love half the movie and not the entirety of it and why David Lynch -- even minus all the bursts of surrealism -- is an incredible filmmaker. The Bearded Lady, Zip the Pinhead, Major Tom Thumb, The Elephant Man, The Hottentot Venus - we delve into one of the more controversial corners of popular entertainment: the world of Victorian freak shows — where the abnormal, the extraordinary, and the misunderstood were paraded as spectacle and sold as wonder. But who were these so-called “freaks” - vulnerable human oddities driven to make a living the only way they could, cictims of exploitation, or pioneers of performance who found power in their difference? We're joined by Dr. John Jacob Woolf, historian and author of 'The Wonders: Lifting the Curtain on the Freak Show, Circus and Victorian Age', a book that offers a deeply researched, empathetic, and eye-opening look at the lives behind the wonderful posters, at the performers who captivated crowds and challenged Victorian notions of normality. We explore Freakery and ask who are the modern freaks? Who do we gawp, marvel and laugh at? In this episode of General Witchfinders, we take a close look at The Creeping Flesh (1973), a British horror film from cult studio Tigon British Film Productions. Best known for low-budget horror that ran alongside the likes of Hammer Horror and Amicus, Tigon was founded in 1966 by Tony Tenser and operated out of Hammer House on Wardour Street in London. This marks our first dive into their back catalogue—and what a place to start. The Creeping Flesh stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee (#BigChrisLee) as brothers on opposing ends of a bizarre scientific discovery involving an ancient skeleton, reanimation, and some very shaky ideas about inherited evil. Lorna Heilbron plays opposite them as the increasingly disturbed Penelope. The film was directed by Freddie Francis, a key figure in British horror cinema. Francis replaced Don Sharp at the last minute and brought his usual visual flair, having previously directed Paranoiac, The Evil of Frankenstein, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, and Tales from the Crypt. He's also better known in wider circles for his cinematography—earning two Academy Awards and five BAFTAs for work on Sons and Lovers, The Elephant Man, The Innocents, Return to Oz, and Glory. He also worked on Dune, Cape Fear, and even music videos for All Saints and Jimmy Nail. Cinematographer Norman Warwick handled the visuals on The Creeping Flesh. Warwick was also behind the camera for The Abominable Dr. Phibes (see Episode 10), Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde, and Confessions of a Window Cleaner. The film was shot at Shepperton Studios and Thorpe House in Surrey. We believe The Creeping Flesh was the 20th film pairing Cushing and Lee, likely falling between Horror Express (Episode 7) and Nothing but the Night (Episode 42). EPISODE 193: Through a Dream, Darkly — Ranking David Lynch (ft. Molly Razz) Episode Description: This week, we tumble headfirst into the subconscious as Jason is joined by the enigmatic Molly Razz to rank five of David Lynch's most haunting cinematic visions. From industrial nightmares and small-town secrets to Hollywood hallucinations, we tackle the big questions: What is real? What is a performance? And where does that damn radiator song keep coming from? Films Ranked: Eraserhead (1977) The Elephant Man (1980) Blue Velvet (1986) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) Mulholland Drive (2001) Is Eraserhead a surreal masterpiece or an anxiety dream gone on too long? Is Fire Walk with Me the secret key to Twin Peaks? Does Mulholland Drive mark the apex of Lynch's dream logic? And how many mysteries can be packed into one velvet curtain? Molly brings razor-sharp insight, Jason brings existential dread, and together they attempt the impossible: ranking the unrankable. PLUS: The legacy of Lynchian dread The fine art of being uncomfortable Molly's theory on Blue Velvet and American repression A brief trip into the Black Lodge (we think)

ART! TRASH! TERROR! Adventures in Strange Cinema (Headpress 2025) by Chris Alexander is a treasure trove of in-depth essays and edifying interviews that celebrate some of the most eccentric and unforgettable movies in cult cinema history. From recognized classics (George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, David Lynch's The Elephant Man) to misunderstood masterpieces (Michael Mann's The Keep, Boris Sagal's The Omega Man) to unfairly maligned curios (Kostas Karagiannis' Land Of The Minotaur, Brett Leonard's Hideaway), the author takes an alternately serious and playful but always personal look at several strains of international horror, dark fantasy, and exploitation film -- motion pictures that transform, transgress, challenge, infuriate, shock, and entertain. Connecting these passionate and critical essays are insightful interviews with revered talents, such as John Waters (writer/director, Cecil B. Demented), Michael Winner (director, The Sentinel), Nicolas Cage (actor, Vampire's Kiss), Gene Simmons (co-founder/bassist, KISS), William Crain (director, Blacula), William Lustig (director, Maniac), Werner Herzog (director, Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht) and many more, as well as witty, heartfelt memoirs charting the author's oddball experiences on the fringes of Hollywood and beyond. We conclude our David Lynch series with his first Academy Award-nominated feature, The Elephant Man. Released in 1980, John Hurt stars as John Merrick, a Victorian era freak show star whose life changes when he meets Dr. Frederick Treves, played by Anthony Hopkins. But of course, with David Lynch telling the story, there is so much more to it than what lies on the surface.
Kicking off our study of the films of David Lynch, The Elephant Man is a heartbreaking look into the mistreatment of those who look different than us. John Merrick (John Hurt), born with a number of physical deformities, has been mistreated and abused all through his life until he's taken in to be studied by Dr. Treves (Anthony Hopkins). Instead of finding a monster, Treves discovers the gentle heart of John and seeks to give him a better life. Chris Evans (Captain America, The Avengers, Knives Out, Fantastic Four 2005) stars as Curtis Everett, the resolute rebel leader who ignites the uprising against the brutal elite. Alongside him, Song Kang-ho (renowned for his work in Parasite and The Host) delivers a powerful performance as Namgoong Minsoo, a man whose secret knowledge becomes crucial to the resistance. The film also features Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange, We Need to Talk About Kevin) as the enigmatic Minister Mason, the legendary John Hurt (Alien, The Elephant Man) as Gilliam—the wise elder whose guidance resonates throughout the revolt, & Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Fantastic Four 2015) as Curtis' right hand, Edgar. Other notable performances include Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting, Wonder Woman, Black Hawk Down), Alison Pill (Midnight in Paris, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Ed Harris (Apollo 13, Pollock), & MORE! Andrew and John break down Snowpiercer's most unforgettable moments—from the explosive uprising in the tail section and the claustrophobic tension of each train car, to the gripping final showdown in the engine room that challenges the very meaning of freedom. Whether you're a die-hard fan of dystopian cinema or discovering this frozen epic for the first time, our reaction and review offers an in-depth exploration of the film's twists, turns, and striking visuals. On the latest episode of Criteria: The Catholic Film Podcast, Andrew Petiprin joins James and Thomas to discuss the late David Lynch's most uplifting film, The Elephant Man. The film is based on the real Victorian-era life of Joseph Merrick, a man who suffered terrible abuse because of his extreme deformities, yet whose human dignity was ultimately recognized and allowed to flourish by those who rescued him and cared for him with Christian compassion. On January 15, the entertainment world lost a truly unique and highly influential talent….David Lynch (Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) who passed away at the age of 78 from emphysema. Over his illustrious career, he directed twelve feature films and was nominated for four Oscars including Best Director for this acclaimed classic released in the fall of 2001. Considered by many fans and critics to be Lynch's best film, this mind-bending mystery has since garnered a devoted following from cinephiles who have enjoyed developing and sharing theories regarding its complex plot. The overall story mainly focuses on two women, one an amnesiac nick-named Rita (Laura Harring) and the other an aspiring actress named Betty (Naomi Watts) who is new to town. The town is Hollywood, where dreams of fame and fortune sometimes come true....though more often they lead to bad things. :o And as these two ladies develop a relationship.....well as most other Lynch stories go, let's just say that they get pretty strange. Also included among the stellar cast are Justin Theroux, Jeanne Bates, Robert Forster, Brent Briscoe, Patrick Fischler, Dan Hedaya, and Billy Ray Cyrus. (Yes you read that right.) Rest in Peace Mr. Lynch….your legacy will live on WELL beyond your time on this earth.
