When Cherish Burtson was sent to prison, she says one of the main things that helped her get through her time was reading. She devoured memoirs and books on mindfulness, which helped her manage the challenges she experienced behind bars. After she was released, she began to volunteer with Books Thru Bars San Diego, a group that provides reading materials to people who are  incarcerated. The Latin term 'imago Dei' means "the image of God". It is considered one of the most influential anthropological concepts about what it means to be human. It occurs in various forms only four times in the first nine chapters of Genesis but is considered the chief reason for the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights declaring the inherent equality of all human beings, and the reason that human life is treated as exceptional by all nations around the world. This important motif is introduced in Genesis 1:26-27 without definition or explanation, yet it has spawned hundreds of thousands of books and articles exploring its consequences and significance. Dr. Brent Strawn, in the Cambridge Companion to Genesis, makes the point that no where in Genesis is the "imago Dei" (image of God) ever singular. From its literary establishment in Genesis 1:27 it is plural ("male and female") and throughout "the unfolding of the book" it continues to be revealed as a plural. After the depiction of the Fall in Genesis 3, from chapters 4 to 36 it is revealed as intact yet presented as broken leading to fratricide, violence, deceit, depravity, and innocent deaths. Generally speaking, there's some correlation between brewery scale and lager quality, and while there are plenty of exceptions to every rule, there's no denying that honing lager beers into the best versions of themselves requires repetition, time, and access to the best ingredients. But over the past few years, an ever-increasing number of very small craft brewers have found success in the major competitions not despite their size, but because of it. Ferndale, Michigan's Urbanrest firmly sits in that group, and their recent gold medal in the American Pilsner category at GABF is further proof that careful process and thoughtful beer design aren't dependent on scale. The beer itself, Kaiser, started as a Franconian-inspired kellerpils, but over the years has morphed into what they now call American pils. And funny enough, it contains only Vienna-style malt from small craft maltster and none of the pils malt that most would expect.
