There’s a trend going around on Instagram talking all about assumptions. I decided it’d be fun to see what kinds of assumptions our followers have about us and the family. I posted the question and the responses were very interesting. First things first, these really didn’t seem like fact finding questions. They genuinely felt like, based on what we’ve posted, this is how people perceive us. Which is eye opening in some ways but still fun to address on the podcast. The first assumption we chat about is whether or not Jesse gets nervous answering questions on the podcast. To be fair, Jesse has said many times that he’d rather not know what’s coming on the podcast, but sometimes he’d rather be prepared. So yes, sometimes he gets nervous but sometimes not. Others assume that we never get loud with the kids. Not necessarily true. This is definitely something we’ve worked on over the years, but we’re human and sometimes find ourselves failing in the moment. We do try not to lead in anger however. You all had a ton of assumptions about us and the family. Which in many ways makes me feel like I haven’t shown enough real behind the scenes moments. There is a reason for that though. In many ways, our journey is very much the story of our children and it’s not our place to put their business out on the internet. We do try to be as transparent about our thoughts, beliefs and actions, but we refuse to overshare our kid’s lives. I’m excited about the responses we received. I hope we debunked some of the assumptions and clarified others. What assumptions do you have about us and our family? In This Episode: [00:33] We are tackling your assumptions as noted on the ‘Gram. [02:45] Are these assumptions or just questions people want more information on? [03:23] Does Jesse get nervous answering questions on the podcast? [04:16] Someone assumes that Jesse and I never yell or get loud with the kids. [05:59] Is our family extremely close and always together? [08:39] We actually do have a pet. A hedgehog. [10:30] Is it really assumed that we’re a fun couple? [11:20] Another follower assumes that we’re gun enthusiasts. [12:53] We did not meet at a Christian college. [13:53] We definitely have our fighting moments. [16:40] One person thinks we’re a lot more wild and crazy than we let on. [18:45] Believe it or not, we’re definitely not perfect. [21:14] Another assumption is that we expect our kids to follow the lifestyle we were brought up in. [23:31] Jesse is definitely not more of a clean freak than I am. [25:45] We definitely tease and bicker. Plus learn which of us is quieter than the other. [30:08] Do we eat a ton of ice cream or dessert? [31:36] Plus a few random things about food, our first kiss, and whether or not we curse. [34:18] TV is not a big thing in our house. [36:01] Multiple people have assumptions on who wears the pants in the family. We are answering all of your burning questions once again. Y’all gave us some really good ones this time. We’re also sharing more about the origins of the phrase “eat crow.” It has come to our attention that not everyone knows what that phrase means and as we were doing some research we learned something new too. Guess what? Jesse is still doing Crossfit. In fact, he’s started creating mini-personalized workouts for me and let me tell you, they’re not easy. It’s really the first time I’ve done any strenuous workouts since having Kierstyn, and I can say without a doubt, it will be a while until I get my endurance back. We also got a question about the top three tips we’d give our pre-married selves. Honestly, the most important one is to realize that you don’t need to fix your spouse. The goal is to build a life and love together and to remember that God is in the middle of it all. But if you’re focused on creating a “fair” relationship rather than the relationship itself, you’ll find yourself becoming resentful. Plus, do we plan to retire? What would that even look like for us. Jesse and I both agree that true retirement is not likely in our future. At this moment in time we’re just living our lives doing what we love. Will Money Saving Mom always be in the picture? Who knows. But true retirement is definitely not. Jesse also shares his thoughts on whether it’s more important to pay off your mortgage or invest and continue to pay your mortgage. I think we both came to the agreement that there is no right or wrong way to do this. It just depends on what makes sense for you and your situation. Listen in to hear about all of these subjects in detail as well as get the scoop on whether or not I recorded my own podcast intro in the 3rd person. (Hint: I didn’t!) We always have fun answering your questions, so keep them coming and maybe we’ll feature one of yours on our next Q+A segment. In This Episode: [00:43] It’s that time again! We’re answering your burning questions. [01:30] What we learned about the phrase, “eat crow.” [03:43] The same product is again saving our lives this week… a video baby monitor. [06:20] We are having trouble finding the exact model to share but here’s a bit more about it. [08:22] I just finished, The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer. [10:00] First question, does Jesse still do Crossfit? [13:00] The top three tips we’d give our pre-married selves. [15:52] Stop trying to fix your spouse! [19:16] Our favorite activities to do with the kids. [22:56] Is retirement in our future? What would it look like? [24:40] Does Jesse think it’s smarter to invest or pay off your mortgage? [30:14] No I did not do the intro to the podcast. Learn more about the process. Jesse had the pleasure of working on all levels of the advertising stack, from scaling large in-house SEO teams for both clients, and his own web properties, to personally overseeing the deployment of millions per month in paid ad spend (both in online DTC, international distribution and physical retail). Remotepreneur Insights Always Say ‘Yes’– In the beginning of growing your agency or company, you might need to hustle and take on as many deals as you can until you earn the privilege to turn clients away. Save Money – Once you start growing your companies you might need to hire teams of people to handle the work. You have to pay those people for their services. That’s why it’s important to save up. Keep it Simple – Stay true to your niche. If you want to do graphic design, do only that. If you want to do SEO, just stick to SEO. Don’t stray off because you might end up torn apart by all sides. Quotes “I ended up picking up from my personal network from people that I knew to do kind of growth work on it. I didn’t know what I was doing. I just needed to make money really fast to pay for the hotels I was staying at.” “I put a job offer for someone to help me with my agency. At the time, I just wanted somebody to help with content writing. I just needed some more content . I didn’t want to pay some one off services. So, I did that and it kicked off and did really well.” “I ended up making the company a lot smaller. I found employees that I let go. Letting people go for me was a sign of defeat. I didn’t want to let my team down. So, I made sure everyone had new jobs and prospects to go to that paid the same amount of money, more often with previous clients. I let clients that consume a lot of time go. I kinda started all over again, this new model of hiring writers, look for more firms and managing them.” “I think in the early days there is a lot of accepting deals that are potentially toxic because you need the money. It’s not until you got some cash in the bank, things are smooth that you’re comfortable to say no. There are so many people that are on a podcast, Youtube and stuff that are it’s ok to say no. When you’re not making money and you’re broke, you kinda have to say yes to everything. “ “The agency, for a lot of things, was like my own venture capital firm. I was like ‘Can I please have some money?’ and they would give me money. I would deploy it in terms of developing marketing or engineering resources. I take money from the agency and put it into my passion.” “First, save money. Make sure you have some cash because if you’re going to employ anyone, have the responsibility to back them when stuff doesn’t go your way. So, If you have to let employees go, you need to cover that.” “When you go from consulting to an agency, keep it simple. Do it well, keep it simple. Be the best in your class or category, whatever that is. I just do SEO and I’m the best at it. I just do link building and I’m the best at it.” Timestamps 06:30 – What made Jesse become a digital nomad 21:35 – Does Jesse’s agency run without him? 23:12 – Why did Jesse decide to move on from his agency and build a SaaS company y? 30:00 – How Jesse used money from one company into growing another 36:08 – When is a good time to pivot from one business to another 39:10 – How much money should you save before starting an agency 44:14 – Do you need to build a system? 48:00 – How to remove yourself from fulfillment? On this week's episode of the podcast, we're talking about how to build a strong father-daughter relationship -- and I brought in my resident expert, Jesse, to give us input. (I didn't mention this on the podcast, but we also asked the girls to both give input on what they feel helps to build a strong relationship and that was some of the basis of what Jesse shared.) It has been so beautiful to watch Jesse lean in and love his daughters so well as they've gotten older. I know there can be a tendency for dads to pull back as girls get older and it can feel somewhat awkward as they are no longer little girls and are blossoming into young women. In this podcast, I ask Jesse to talk about how he has nurtured relationships with the girls, fostered strong communication and openness, and what he's done to continue to build into them as they've gotten older. He drops a lot of truth nuggets including the importance of making them feel valued, challenging them but not expecting perfection, and how to get them to want to talk with you. I hope this conversation encourages you. As always, we welcome your thoughts, constructive criticism, and feedback! In This Episode: [01:24] Soup is saving my life right now and check out the recipes we’ve tried recently. [03:32] Jesse’s talks about how his Post-It whiteboard gym schedule has made such a difference for him. [06:44] I share my book recommendation for this week and why it was so impactful to me. [10:58] Does Jesse feel like he’s felt the need to pull back from the girls as they get older? [14:06] Learn what Jesse aims to do by asking the girls the hard questions as they grow up. [16:22] Take the time to invest in your girls’ friendships as well. [19:51] Communicating to your kids that they are valued and loved is the key. [20:24] Affirm their strengths, character, and growth — and focus on the positives. [22:50] Don’t rescue your kids when they’re struggling. Struggle builds strength.
