You either get on Shakespeare's wavelength or you don't. But maybe an extreme approach to The Bard's stories can help? It's likely Baz Luhrmann's ROMEO + JULIET converted many romantics into fans of the play - even if they might not have stuck around for any other Shakespeare pieces. On paper, Vincent Fantauzzo’s life looks perfect. He’s one of Australia’s most celebrated portrait artists, winning the People’s Choice Award at the Archibald Prize four times. His subjects have included some of Australia’s biggest names - Heath Ledger, Baz Luhrmann, Matt Moran - and his work hangs in galleries, private collections, and museums around the world. He’s married to beloved actress Asher Keddie, they’re raising two boys together, and from the outside, it looks like Vincent has it all. But his real story is far more complicated. In this conversation, Vincent opens up about the trauma he’s carried since childhood: neglect, abuse, crime, poverty and the trauma that shaped him long before he ever picked up a paintbrush. He speaks about growing up completely illiterate, the violence he witnessed and was part of as a teenager, and how boxing became the unlikely path that led him to art, and ultimately, to healing. This is a conversation about survival, love, redemption, and the parts of someone’s story you’ll never see just by looking at their life from the outside. Baz Luhrmann took centre stage in the King’s Birthday Honours and walked away with a Companion of the Order of Australia — yass, cinematic royalty king! We couldn’t help but cringe as we revisited a very loooong Baz answer about his marriage on YouTube. Get ready for Gatsby 2: Gatz Harder! In the second installment of their deep dive into The Great Gatsby, the TMI guys follow the novel’s improbable rise from critical failure to cultural cornerstone. When it was first published in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece was dismissed as a “literary lemon meringue” and sold fewer than 25,000 copies in his lifetime. He died thinking he'd been forgotten, but within a decade, the book was rediscovered — by soldiers, scholars, and eventually Hollywood. Jordan and Heigl unpack its long, often cursed journey to the screen, including the disastrous silent version that Fitzgerald and Zelda walked out of, and a 1949 remake plagued by moral censors and a suicidal director. But nothing beats the real-life drama of the 1974 adaptation, which was nearly derailed by a real-life love triangle: producer Robert Evans commissioned the film for his wife, Love Story star Ali MacGraw — only for her to leave him for co-star Steve McQueen before filming began. She was replaced by Mia Farrow, while a distracted Robert Redford spent much of the shoot glued to Watergate coverage. Jordan and Alex also look at Baz Luhrmann’s glittery 2013 remake, complete with 100,000 liters of fake rain, Jay-Z’s much-maligned soundtrack, and Tobey Maguire being weird. It’s a tale of art, obsession, reinvention — and a few of Heigl's rants. Raiders of the Podcast

This week... Insurmountable obstacles, unfortunate events, and darker obsessions collide in four films about love that wounds and scars and ends unavoidably tragic.     When a young woman is found murdered after leaving his house, down on his luck and violently tempered screenwriter Dix finds himself squarely in the police's frame. Only the testimony of his beautiful neighbor keeps him from immediate arrest. As his prosecution drags out, a relationship between them blooms. Can the blossoming relationship withstand the suspicions and outside glances? Did Dix succumb to his rage fueled impulses and will he do it again? An existential noir masterpiece with a towering lead performance, In a Lonely Place.     In the summer of 1972, young Vada Sultenfuss lives with her widowed father. Vada has a tendency toward hypochondria and a fascination with death, likely from losing her mother at birth and growing up in the town funeral parlor. This summer, Vada begins growing into her own and suffers many of life's first times. Widely considered a classic of the 1990s with a pair of fantastic child lead performances and a final act that scared a generation, My Girl.     Young Douzi is abandoned by his mother at a Peking Opera troupe. His youth is spent training to play dan, female lead, roles while his best friend, Shitou, learns jing, heroic male roles. From the brutal violence of their training, the oppressive occupation of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the crushing repression of the Cultural Revolution, Douzi and Shitou's relationship carries them through 50 years. Beautifully shot, delicately edited, and widely considered one of the best films produced in Mainland China, Farewell My Concubine.     Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona Beach, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break new mutiny... the star-crossed lovers draw the conclusion of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy of theatrical motif. Hyper stylized with an energy that has few equals and a cast that matches it beat for beat, The Bard's most well known work's third major film adaption that still brings tears of joy to long suffering High School English teachers everywhere... William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet.     All that and Dave loses a letter, Tyler feels new emotions in a fetal positions, and Kevin likes to watch... everything. When artist Vincent Fantauzzo was a boy he was a street-fighting petty criminal with dyslexia and a blazing talent for drawing. He escaped jail time, and grew up to become one of Australia's most well-known portrait artists.VIncent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most successful portrait artists. For his luminous, photo-realistic paintings he's won the People's Choice Award at the annual Archibald Prize more than any other artist. He's also won the Moran National Portrait Prize twice, once with a painting of his friend, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and the second time with a painting of his wife, actor Asher Keddie. All the success is a long way from his upbringing in Broadmeadows in Melbourne, when at times it seemed like he was going to end up in jail, or dead.Vincent struggled so badly with dyslexia that he developed elaborate rituals to avoid writing at school, which is partly how he came to drawing. He became a street-fighting petty criminal and he was kicked out of school at 14 and was drawn into a violent world where he had to be extraordinarily streetwise to survive.Vincent still carries the scars of surviving his childhood into the big, beautiful life he's built for himself as one of Australia's most well-known artists. This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, social disadvantage, parenting, father son relationships, boxing, learning disabilities, struggling in school, Hollywood, the art world, Heath Ledger, Kim Ledger, Batman, family, family dynamics, life story, art, portraits, painting, juvenile crime, drug dealing, hot houses, brothers.Unveiled, written with Craig Henderson, is published by Penguin.

Justin and Bec forego a typical main topic this week, opting instead for effectively two main topics with absolutely massive, iconic Songs of the Week! Bec's Song of the Week is "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and she explores the roots of it from the 1965 Italian ballad "Io che non vive (senza te)" through to Dusty Springfield's hugely successful English adaptation and eventually to Elvis's famous performances of it in the 1970s, across his 1970 Nashville sessions, the concerts filmed for "That's The Way It Is," and even much later and deeper into the decade. Justin then traces the lineage of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's legendary "Trouble," originally featured in the 1958 film "King Creole," but increasingly recognized over the years as one of Elvis's most enduring recordings, symbolizing the myth of him as a rebellious rocker, most prominently recently featured in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis." We go deeper, though, touching on the history of stop-time in Dixieland jazz and, most influentially on Leiber/Stoller, in Muddy Waters's "Hoochie Coochie Man." Understanding the history behind that song, the hoochie coochie itself, and the way Trouble has become representative of expressions of both masculinity and femininity unlocks a deeper sense of the song's significance as one of the all-time masterpieces of Elvis's entire recorded works. Oh yeah, and the duo react to the first trailer for Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

A native New Yorker, she has toured the world with pop/glam band Scissor Sisters and has performed with Bright Light Bright Light and Slow Knights. Starring in LGBTQ romantic classic “Walk with Me,” as a singer/songwriter, featured on the original album as well. As a singer, she has also opened for Lady Gaga, and has shared the stage with Drag legends Joey Arias, Murray Hill, and more. She worked closely with Baz Luhrmann as the voice of Misty Holloway on the Netflix show “The Get Down.” Bridget has released singles with the House DJ/producer legend Todd Terry as well as numerous of her own singles. As a child actress, she has appeared in countless commercials and Sesame Street. She has starred in HBO's Everyday People, Sherrybaby, Redacted, God's Pocket, Steven Soderbergh's The Knick and had a recurring role as a one-legged “hooker” on Law & Order: SVU. On stage, Barkan has appeared in numerous productions including Dog Sees God and alongside Lea Michelle in a workshop of Spring Awakening.  "Heartbroken Ones” was a practice in healing, purging, and processing what Barkan was going through. “It helped me get through one of the worst moments of my life. It was the acceptance I was singing to myself,” Barkan explains. “All that mattered was releasing the pain that this indiscretion had caused.” Working with producer Austin Bello (Nikki Pope, FNKHOUSER, Goldvein) again  who worked on her previous single “Good Things” and singer songwriter Poet Hawkins, she crafted the song in “a more old soul approach at first. But then I kept listening to my friend Natti Vogel's song ‘FAB (Free Ass Bitch),' which also was a healing song, which had a more pop and synth based energy, so we went in that direction, instead. We took parts of a voice memo and created a soundscape which really captured the inner world I was in.” A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through life, love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let's Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic's crew. An episode that's Much Ado About Autism! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Today, Matt and Angela welcome special guest and Shakespeare expert Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis to explore how the Bard's works connect with autistic culture.* Sonya shares how she began studying Shakespeare through a disability lens and explores how some of his characters embody neurodivergent traits.* We discuss how the Globe Theatre is highly accommodating of disabilities and how Shakespeare's works are often featured in “relaxed performances” or autism-friendly showings.* Additionally, we explore the existence of Shakespeare therapy and how his works bring comfort in settings ranging from prisons to assisted living facilities.* Because of its complex language, Shakespeare's work requires a lot of bottom-up processing—something that comes naturally to us autistic folks.* We also talk about how Hamlet's deep melancholy and introspection can easily be understood through a neurodivergent lens.* "To be or not to be" is honestly the most famous autistic inertia quote of all time.* Our hosts and Sonya also dive into the character of Coriolanus, exploring how his lack of social interest and strong sense of justice make him an inherently autistic character.* Tragic heroes often embody neurodivergent experiences—whether it's Macbeth, King Lear, Othello, or Hamlet, each character reflects traits that resonate with the neurodivergent journey.* We discuss the ableism faced by Othello due to his epilepsy and how his character highlights the broader theme of otherness in Shakespeare's works—showing that understanding Shakespeare means understanding the experience of being viewed as different.* The emotional intensity of Shakespeare's plays can be deeply cathartic for the autistic reader, offering a powerful release through the raw, unfiltered emotions of his characters.* In Shakespeare's works, due to the time period, neurodivergent traits are often used for comic relief or are punished in some way, reflecting the societal attitudes of his era towards difference.* It's hard to say whether Shakespeare himself was autistic, as little is known about him biographically, but it's fascinating to see the ways disabled people have claimed his work and found resonance in his characters and themes.* However, Shakespeare could have been neurodivergent simply due to the sheer volume of writing he produced and the vast amount of knowledge he seemed to hold, which could suggest a unique cognitive perspective.* Shakespeare's work continues to be adapted and reclaimed to this day—like Baz Luhrmann's iconic Romeo + Juliet—as well as through neurodivergent Shakespeare meetups, where his plays are reinterpreted and embraced by new audiences.* Finally, we discuss the non-reciprocal, autistic language in Hamlet and how Shakespearean theater often breaks away from the rules and conventions of neurotypical performances, making it easier for neurodivergent audiences to have their needs met.“As a person with a disability, I felt frustrated sometimes when I would go to Shakespeare conferences and find that most of the focus was only on characters. And I thought, ‘okay, but what about the real people with disabilities who read Shakespeare and perform in Shakespeare plays and go to Shakespeare theaters?' And, you know, why isn't anyone writing anything about them?” - Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis“One of the things that makes [Shakespeare] autistic culture representative is that because it is not in vernacular English, you have to bottom-up process. You need a dramaturg. You have to break down every single thing.” - Angela“Growing up as an autistic person, I never understood all of the conversation around me. I could understand some of it, but I never understood all of it. Neurotypical people use so many words and there was so much conversation. And I feel like that acceptance of not understanding it all has helped me to be a better reader of Shakespeare.” - Dr. Sonya Freeman Loftis“Average people throughout history did not make history. The average person lived and died largely forgotten living an average life. If you do something that is divergent, like making a whole bunch of plays that live on for centuries after your death, that is indicative of neurodivergence. Average people live average lives. And if you want to be outstanding, you got to be standing out.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode? All the world's a stage, but Shakespeare's works might just be the most autistic of them all. We dive into the deeply neurodivergent themes, characters, and language that make the Bard's plays resonate with the autistic experience. The landscape of the Hollywood musical has gone through its seasons, from being able to print money, to now feeling like a massive swing. No one took a bigger swing than Baz Luhrmann in 2001 when he envisioned a juke box musical set in 1899 blending bohemian values with can-can dancers, Aussies a plenty, and pop music. Tune in as we discuss what made this such a smash hit, such a visionary pursuit, and perhaps what didn't make this a Best Picture winner (you know we had to sneak in a little Oscars talk).

Whether you're watching the original Romeo and Juliet film (1968), Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996), or the indie rock Romeo + Juliet musical, you get a different experience depending on the storyteller. Gurdip, Ryan, Olivia, Bec and Justin discuss at length the new Netflix documentary directed by acclaimed sports doc filmmaker Jason Hehir, "Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley," purportedly about the making of the 1968 Comeback Special. Following in the wake of the special's prominence in Baz Luhrmann's 2022 biopic and the Paramount Plus documentary "Reinventing Elvis," the gang is surprised to learn this is an unchallenging, conventional retelling of Elvis' life story leading up to 1968 intended for the most casual of potential viewers. There's a few new bits of footage, thoughtful contributions from the small group of talking heads and a fairly well-constructed first half, but the TCBCast crew's smaller grievances about certain inaccuracies, exclusions or lack of nuance begin to pile up around the midpoint until the whole thing topples over in its coverage of the special itself, culminating in an outburst over the way the film handles the special's iconic finale. So, the crew all went back to rewatch the original 1968 broadcast version of "Singer Presents Elvis" - complete with original sponsor advertisements - which we have not revisited on TCBCast properly since 2018, and reflect on both the special itself, the incredible work of its extremely under-recognized crew who made it possible for Elvis to shine, and whether the documentary captures what was so great about the NBC special in a way that is useful or insightful.  "Return of the King" is streaming via Netflix, the 50th anniversary version of the "Comeback" Special is available on Apple TV or purchasable on digital distribution platforms, and an original broadcast version of the special, intact with Singer Sewing Company commercials, has also been made available on the Internet Archive. The video clip we mention near the end of the show is viewable on EAP Society's YouTube channel. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

Twenty-three years later, over a thousand families are still waiting for news of loved ones lost in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11. Correspondent Scott Pelley looks at how efforts to search for and identify their remains have never stopped, driven by the promise made by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Pelley visits their laboratory, which is using new advancements in DNA research and breakthrough techniques to provide answers for families holding on to hope. This is a double-length segment. Correspondent Jon Wertheim reports on a phenomenon that has long captured Hollywood: the outsized presence of Australians earning top billings and awards on the American silver screen – in front of and behind the camera. Wertheim interviews Aussie actress Sarah Snook and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann about the country's renowned training grounds for the dramatic arts, their pathways to international theater, film and television and the Australian mindset on stardom. Correspondent Lesley Stahl travels to the remote, Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, a tiny country that has fiercely protected its unique culture, declaring that within its borders, Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product. But today, the country is facing a crisis — 9% of its population has left Bhutan for higher-paying jobs abroad, so the government has launched a high-stakes plan to help the economy and lure young Bhutanese back by developing an entirely new city from scratch — what the King is calling a "mindfulness" city. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Marvel Studios surprised fans with our first official glimpse of the upcoming Thunderbolts* film, by quietly dropping the teaser trailer Monday morning. The footage, set to the tune of Where is My Mind? by The Pixies, features Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, most heavily, and is in keeping with descriptions that came out of both D23 and San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, along with a few surprises. The search for the DCU's Hal Jordan has finally come to an end, according to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, with Emmy winner Kyle Chandler set to star in the HBO Lanterns series. Chandler's name was not among the top contenders being bandied about the last few weeks, which included the likes of Timothy Olyphant and Chris Pine, as well as Josh Brolin, as we previously reported. The Lanterns series, developed by Ozark's Chris Mundy, Lost's Damon Lindelof and Eisner Award winner Tom King, has often been likened to HBO's True Detective in terms of tone and story. Seems like we've been celebrating more box office wins than losses as of late, but Transformers: One was decidedly less than meets the eye, at least with audiences, as the animated prequel debuted to a soft $25 million, a near franchise low. The muted response may come as a bit of a surprise coming of the heels of strong critic reviews and an A Cinemascore, but neither were enough to dethrone reigning box office champ BeetleJuice BeetleJuice, which just held the top spot, making $26 million in its third week. Last week, Warner Brothers released the first trailer for Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho's highly anticipated sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie, and Toni Collette. The film arrives in theaters on January 31, 2025. AMC has canceled Orphan Black: Echoes, after one season. Set in the near future, the sequel series starring Krysten Ritter shared the same world as the BBC cult hit starring Tatiana Maslany. Netflix's One Piece has cast Joe Manganiello as "Mr. 0" and Lera Abova as "Miss All Sunday" for Season 2. Director-writer Jared Bush is replacing Jennifer Lee as chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Lee will return to a filmmaking role at the company and will focus on writing and directing Frozen 3 and executive producing Frozen 4. Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Squid Game season 2 which begins streaming on December 26th. Netflix announced The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an animated film debuting on February 11, 2025, with Doug Cockle reprising his voice role as Geralt of Rivia from the CD Projekt Red video games. An exclusive clip is now available online. Netflix has dropped the first teaser for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell video game created by Ubisoft. Liev Schreiber will voice Sam Fisher, the protagonist of the series. Warner Bros has confirmed that Baz Luhrmann's next feature film at the studio will be Jehanne d'Arc, an epic story about the French teenage military commander Joan of Arc. Tamara Smart is joining Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. She'll recur in season two, which is in production and slated for a 2025 premiere. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star in Emerald Fennell‘s feature adaptation of Wuthering Heights. MRC has tapped LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the film that is based on author Emily Brontë's classic novel of the same name. Warner Brothers has released the first trailer and poster for Sinners, the Prohibition era horror film from Ryan Coolger starring Michael B. Jordan that has been under wraps for the past year. The film hits theaters on March 7th, 2025. Daveed Diggs has been cast as a series regular for the fifth and final season of Amazon's The Boys.

Was Romeo and Juliet your first brush with Shakespeare? Whether it was on stage, on screen in films by Franco Zeffirelli or Baz Luhrmann or Shonda Rhimes' Still Star-Crossed, or in the pages of the Folger Shakespeare edition, your early experience probably shaped how you see Juliet. Over 400 years, our thinking about Shakespeare's first tragic heroine has shifted repeatedly, revealing as much about us as Shakespeare's play does. Oxford professor Sophie Duncan, Shakespeare scholar and author of Juliet: The Life and Afterlives of Shakespeare's First Tragic Heroine, explores the enduring legacy of one of Shakespeare's most iconic characters. The conversation touches on Juliet's cultural impact, why Shakespeare may have centered his tragedy around a young woman and the societal reflections found in the various interpretations of Juliet throughout history. The episode also discusses how different eras, particularly the Victorian period, have grappled with Juliet's rebellious and passionate nature, often reshaping her character to fit their values. Duncan shares insights into why Juliet remains a potent symbol of love and tragedy and how this character continues to captivate audiences centuries after she was first brought to life on the stage. Sophie Duncan is a scholar who specializes in Shakespeare's performance history and how Early Modern dramas have been used to explore issues of gender, race, and sexuality over the last four and a half centuries. She is interested in women's creative networks, theatrical memory, theater props, cognitive approaches to drama, and cultural memory. Sophie regularly works with theater companies to bring Shakespeare's works to life. Duncan is the author of Juliet: The Life and Afterlives of Shakespeare's First Tragic Heroine and Shakespeare's Women and the Fin de Siècle. She writes about Shakespeare and gender and has worked extensively as a historical advisor in theater and television. Additionally, Sophie is a Research Fellow and Dean for Welfare at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. She lives in Oxford, UK.
