We all need God’s word, and we need it desperately––this is why Jesse and Leah Roberts embarked on EveryPsalm. Jesse and Leah are parents, pastors, and musicians living in Kansas City, MO. They began their EveryPsalm project on January 1, 2020, after years of talking about the idea. They explain, “EveryPsalm is a three-year long musical journey consisting of simple, meditative songs based on the psalms. Starting with Psalm 1 and ending at Psalm 150.” Each song is based on a psalm, and almost all of their lyrics are taken word-for-word from the Bible. Their goal with this project is to help their listeners interact with Scripture in new ways and to make God’s Word applicable to any circumstances people might face. In this episode, Jesse and Leah talk with Dru Johnson about their project thus far (they're up to Psalm 75) and their goals for the rest of the songs to come. They discuss the songwriting process and how putting Scripture to music aids memorization and deeper engagement. You can check out their Youtube channel to listen to every song of the EveryPsalm project along with their other free music. You can also check out their website for more information and to subscribe to their weekly song release. Are you thinking about changing careers? He went to chiropractic school, studying medical science for years. Then, he opened his own business, running a chiropractic clinic. Most people at that point would coast for the rest of their life. Stay in their comfort zone and enjoy the “nice income” of a chiropractor, and chill till retirement. That’s the conventional plan for most chiropractors. You can’t blame them. After devoting so much time, energy, and finances to a career like chiropractic care, who wants to start over in a new field? Jesse Chappus, that’s who. Jesse is an “outside the box” thinker. After only four and a half years working as a chiropractor, he knew that he had not yet found his ultimate career path. His passion for health and wellness was evident to his patients, yet Jesse wanted to somehow help more people in a way that felt better aligned with his personality and skills. While his chiropractic business steadily grew, Jesse enjoyed listening to podcasts. What he didn’t realize is that seeds of destiny were being planted every time he hit play. This episode is fantastic for budding entrepreneurs in the health and wellness space. Or people not yet in the health and wellness space wanting to pivot their career in this direction. Listen in as Jesse shares how he made the dramatic career change from chiropractor to full-time podcaster. You get the full story - no sugar coating: the financial “tightness” at the beginning, his transition, and how Jesse grew his Ultimate Health Podcast over time to be one of the most listened to health and wellness shows on the internet. As a lifelong learner, Jesse continuously researches the most current information on nutrition and natural health. In this episode, our host Wade Lightheart also gets Jesse to share some of his perspectives on health and wellness. Jesse is a former long-distance runner and cyclist who now enjoys focusing on shorter, more purposeful exercises to accommodate his current lifestyle as a busy dad. In this podcast, we cover: How Jesse shifted from chiropractor to podcaster The structure and goals of The Ultimate Health Podcast business Some of the “extreme” health programs Jesse has experimented with and what he learned Why Jesse is a big fan of kettlebells for exercise Jesse’s current diet and his history of eating plans Some biohacks and technologies Jesse enjoys using Why Jesse likes the Oura Ring (link below) Why red light therapy is one of his favorite biohacks Why Jesse kept referring to “getting back to the basics” of health How does it feel to do what you love for a living? What are the mental health benefits? Jesse said: “It’s huge for me. I get to learn about what I would be learning about anyways (as a chiropractor.) I prepare for interviews intensely, going really in-depth with my questions. I interview a lot of authors in the health and wellness space. I soak up their books. Then I have these incredible conversations where I pick people’s brains, and I get to continue to learn. That is so phenomenal. Everything is so aligned with what I do. It’s hard to put into words. I get to learn and make money doing something I love. Plus, I get to help people at the same time! I am so grateful for this. It was just something that came together organically. Me and my wife doing what we were passionate about as a career. All I can say is just ‘gratitude.’ Even the way we make revenue with our business is just beautiful. We’re sharing products that we use and love. That’s how we generally make money is through sponsorships and affiliate links. We help people and make money doing that. It’s a win-win-win-win all around. I’m very grateful!” Testing the Extremes and Coming Back to the Middle Wade is a big believer in pushing the limits for a short period of time for learning purposes but then pulling back to the center to regain equilibrium. Wade asks Jesse, “What are some of the extreme things you’ve done in experimentation that taught you a lesson, and then you pulled back from the adventure or the dysfunction or the breakdown and centered back in the middle? Jesse: “I mentioned earlier about diet. I’ve experimented with diets across the board - from raw food to keto. And then I’ve come back to the middle. That’s where I am now. Again, it’s not sexy to talk about, but I like eating organic, whole foods. I’m just eating clean foods all the time. It’s a default. There’s no choice in the matter for me. “We talked before about having too much on my plate when I was building the show with my wife. I was working all day and even between patients working on the show and then coming home at night and pushing it till maybe 11 pm working on the podcast. Then, waking up and doing it all over again. On the weekends, I was doing most of the traveling to meet my girlfriend (now my wife.) I was redlining - pushing real hard.. Now, I can look back at that time and see the importance of balance. Now I'm lucky enough to be in a position where I can say “no” to many things and go all-in on the show. I’m so big on focusing on what you do well, what you love to do. I've been an advocate of that for years. I’m a big fan of focus. If I had to pick one word in business that I would stand behind, it’s focus.” Jesse Chappus' inspiring story provides hope for those feeling like something is missing in their career. Wade describes it like “your music is missing a bass guitar.” Do you feel like something isn’t quite right with your career or life? If you’re seeking to enter the health and wellness space, be sure to tune in to this episode. In the sixth edition of the Inside JABA Series, I'm joined by Inside JABA regulars Drs. Linda LeBlanc and Claire St. Peter, as well as Dr. Jesse Dallery, to talk about the paper he and his colleagues published in the latest issue of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. This paper fits nicely in JABA's ongoing series on Public Health and Telehealth, and is a great example of the potential for Behavior Analysis to be used for so much more than the type of work many BCBAs are doing currently. As Linda states during the show, "public health is all around us," and that public health challenges, at the end of the day, are behavioral in nature. As an aside, if you're not currently subscribed to JABA, you can do so here. Here are some of the topics we discussed: The current scope of cigarette smoking in the United States. How cigarette smoking occurs disproportionately in individuals of lower socio-economic status. Previous research in the contingency management (CM) of cigarette smoking. The logistical challenges of previous work in CM. How Jesse and his research team addressed these challenges in the current study by developing a mobile system of carbon monoxide sampling. The relationship between the literatures of CM and Delay Discounting, and more generally, Behavioral Economics (I couldn't' help myself from butting in and asking a few questions about this). Here are the links to papers, podcasts, apps, and other resources we talked about: mMotiv8: A smartphone-based contingency management intervention to promote smoking cessation. Dallery, Stinson, Bolivar, Modave, Salloum, Mendoza Viamontes, and Rohilla (2020). Quitbet (smoking cessation app). Smokefree.gov (smoking cessation resources from the US Federal Government). Jesse's homepage at the University of Florida. Previous episodes discussing Behavioral Economics: Session 11 (Dr. Erin Rasmussen), Session 17 & Session 113 (Dr. Derek Reed), and Session 99 (Dr. David Cox). New Evidence That Cigarette Smoking Remains the Most Important Health Hazard (Schroeder, 2013). Jesse shares his growth story with us today, taking us right from his early childhood through moments of darkness and the role meditation played in all the amazing projects he built leading up to The Big Quiet. We hear about his early love for storytelling and his gift for leadership that got quelled by a disciplining event when he was still in school, leading to his first experiences of anxiety and self-doubt. He takes us through to being a student at New York University, starting a record label and managing a fledgling MGMT, and the massive strain he underwent around this time. This was the point in his life where he found meditation and he talks about how it led him to rediscover his gifts for leadership that were buried inside him for so long. Jesse sketches out the projects he started to create, all driven by his need for community – a mass bike club called The Cyclone and thereafter Med Club, a guided meditation event. We hear from Jesse how around this point he quit his record label business and the role that meditation played in helping him take the plunge and start afresh. Jesse had the pleasure of working on all levels of the advertising stack, from scaling large in-house SEO teams for both clients, and his own web properties, to personally overseeing the deployment of millions per month in paid ad spend (both in online DTC, international distribution and physical retail). Remotepreneur Insights Always Say ‘Yes’– In the beginning of growing your agency or company, you might need to hustle and take on as many deals as you can until you earn the privilege to turn clients away. Save Money – Once you start growing your companies you might need to hire teams of people to handle the work. You have to pay those people for their services. That’s why it’s important to save up. Keep it Simple – Stay true to your niche. If you want to do graphic design, do only that. If you want to do SEO, just stick to SEO. Don’t stray off because you might end up torn apart by all sides. Quotes “I ended up picking up from my personal network from people that I knew to do kind of growth work on it. I didn’t know what I was doing. I just needed to make money really fast to pay for the hotels I was staying at.” “I put a job offer for someone to help me with my agency. At the time, I just wanted somebody to help with content writing. I just needed some more content . I didn’t want to pay some one off services. So, I did that and it kicked off and did really well.” “I ended up making the company a lot smaller. I found employees that I let go. Letting people go for me was a sign of defeat. I didn’t want to let my team down. So, I made sure everyone had new jobs and prospects to go to that paid the same amount of money, more often with previous clients. I let clients that consume a lot of time go. I kinda started all over again, this new model of hiring writers, look for more firms and managing them.” “I think in the early days there is a lot of accepting deals that are potentially toxic because you need the money. It’s not until you got some cash in the bank, things are smooth that you’re comfortable to say no. There are so many people that are on a podcast, Youtube and stuff that are it’s ok to say no. When you’re not making money and you’re broke, you kinda have to say yes to everything. “ “The agency, for a lot of things, was like my own venture capital firm. I was like ‘Can I please have some money?’ and they would give me money. I would deploy it in terms of developing marketing or engineering resources. I take money from the agency and put it into my passion.” “First, save money. Make sure you have some cash because if you’re going to employ anyone, have the responsibility to back them when stuff doesn’t go your way. So, If you have to let employees go, you need to cover that.” “When you go from consulting to an agency, keep it simple. Do it well, keep it simple. Be the best in your class or category, whatever that is. I just do SEO and I’m the best at it. I just do link building and I’m the best at it.” Timestamps 06:30 – What made Jesse become a digital nomad 21:35 – Does Jesse’s agency run without him? 23:12 – Why did Jesse decide to move on from his agency and build a SaaS company y? 30:00 – How Jesse used money from one company into growing another 36:08 – When is a good time to pivot from one business to another 39:10 – How much money should you save before starting an agency 44:14 – Do you need to build a system? 48:00 – How to remove yourself from fulfillment? We recently hosted a conversation between Jesse Thomas, Co-founder & CEO of Picky Bars, and Chris Guest, Lean Startup Co. Advisor, about the impact of passion, patience and a focus on growth that led to consistent, year-over-year growth for the energy bar company. In the conversation, they discuss: - How Jesse struggled to find balance in his life while working for a VC-funded startup. - How a personal need from Jesse’s athletic training led to the creation of Picky Bars. - The benefits of self-funding and keeping expenses low. And much, much more… Jesse Thomas is the co-founder & CEO of Picky Bars, not to mention a professional triathlete and two-time ironman champion. Born and raised in Bend, Oregon, Thomas excelled in track and field while at Stanford University and later narrowly missed earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, largely due to an injury he suffered during steeplechase trials. After he shifted to cycling, Thomas ultimately put a stop to his athletic career when a fall while biking left him with a broken neck. Rather than give up, however, he shifted his focus to the startup world. Email us: education@leanstartup.co Follow Lean Startup Co. @leanstartup https://leanstartup.co/education

In 2014, Jesse closed down his law practice, we moved from Kansas to Tennessee, and he came home full-time. That was over 5 years ago and it’s taken us a few years to find our rhythm. We’ve both learned and grown a lot in these last five years. It hasn’t been easy. He struggled through a period of depression. I struggled to figure out what it looked like to love him well through that. But in the last two years, I’ve seen Jesse truly come alive, embrace who God has made him to be, and pour himself into the people and opportunities right in front of him. It has been beautiful and heartwarming to have a front row seat on his journey! So many people have asked questions over the past five years like, “Is Jesse still an attorney? Why did he leave his law practice? What is his role in your business? What does his day-to-day look like?” I think the fact that he would choose to come home full-time after getting his law degree and being licensed as an attorney really fascinated people... or makes people shake their heads in confusion. Today, on the podcast, I ask him these burning questions you all have asked and he gets really honest about his journey and where he is now. If you’re struggling with major life changes, want to find your worth outside of your work, or are just curious about some of the behind-the-scenes of our lives, I think this episode will encourage you. Thank you, Jesse, for your willingness to be so open and vulnerable. I love you and love this crazy and adventurous and wild ride of life we’re on together! In This Episode: [00:25] Welcome back! We're turning the tables a little today and I'm interviewing Jesse! [01:38] What’s saving our lives: Nalgene bottles and seeing our baby on an ultrasound! [06:44] I haven't gotten in much reading recently, but every day I take time to read The Daily Light. [09:01] Jesse shares a brief recap of his story post-law school and starting his own law firm. [13:45] Why did Jesse decide to close down the law firm? [19:04] How Jesse struggled to recognize his gifts and battled depression in those early months. [23:07] What does Jesse’s life look like now? [29:10] We talk about Jesse's involvement in church, our home, and our business. **Summer Replay: Here is one of our favorite episodes we are re-releasing with a new introduction. Stay tuned for all new episodes coming later this summer** On this episode of Worth It, Dustin R. Granger, CFPⓇ and I interview Jesse Patel, the cofounder of Workflowy, the fastest, most flexible list maker on the planet and one of our absolute favorite tools for business and at home. We discuss how this simple, but powerful tool has changed our lives and his. We dig into his journey from working a typical 9-5 job, to joining an incubator, to creating the ultimate list-making program, where you can shift focus from the big picture to minute details in a fluid fashion. So take a pause from your to-do list and listen to our interview with the creator of the ultimate to-do list app! HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL LEARN [2:34] The journey behind the creation of WorkFlowy: from idea to incubator to success [16:41] How the app appeals to people on both ends of the organization spectrum [27:54] What are the changes and goals does Jesse envision for Workflowy [32:25] How Jesse strives for balance and flexibility as co-founder of a startup company while raising twin toddler girls with his wife WHAT IS WORKFLOWY According to Jesse Patel, it’s a way to think big, but start small. It is basically a giant to-do list, where you can dump all your ideas in and then create order from the chaos. From podcast notes to procedure manual, Dustin and Danielle use WorkFlowy at work (it’s completely essential to their business!) and at home. As Dustin says, it becomes an extension of your brain, where you can work out your thoughts. It is the perfect tool for thinking and focusing because you can shift your focus from big picture ideas to the tiny details in a fluid fashion. THE IDEAL CLIENT FOR WORKFLOWY CAN BE ANYONE The app appeals to people on both poles of the organization spectrum, from Type A to the more scattered brain types. It fulfills a core need for people, to be able to see all their thoughts catalogued and searchable. It has been used by doctors, lawyers, screenwriters, and more. No matter the career path, users can create their own systems and processes tailored to whatever business they are in. THE FUTURE OF WORKFLOWY Even though the key to WorkFlowy is the simplicity, Jesse hopes to continue to improve and add to the app. One of the key features he believes is missing, is a dates & reminder system - a way for the app to pull out certain parts from across various lists and create a daily to-do list. Despite this challenge, users continue to use the app for hours a day. Danielle put it best, once you use, you are hooked and there is no going back. HOW TO BALANCE IT ALL Jesse is a CEO of a successful start-up, father to twin toddler girls, and loving husband, how does he do it all? He stresses the importance of setting up specific work hours during the day in order to not fall back into his workaholic ways. Jesse also learned to understand when to step back in his business and trust in the work of others, you can’t do all the things always. Occasionally you also need to give yourself some space (maybe on a skateboard) to be creative. Jesse Womack wears many hats, but at his core, he is a rancher. He is the fifth generation to operate his family’s ranch near Victoria, Texas, a large-scale cattle operation that uses progressive land management techniques in a very unique landscape. Jesse also works closely with Texas Christian University’s Institute of Ranch Management, traveling far and wide to teach sustainable agricultural techniques to ranchers and farmers around the world. And on top of all of that, he is also a cofounder of Explore Ranches, alongside past podcast guests Jay Klebergand Allison Ryan. Responsible land stewardship is in Jesse’s DNA, and it is the foundation of all of his professional ventures. And as you’ll hear, he’s an open-minded, independent, and critical thinker who is able to speak eloquently on a wide array of sometimes-controversial issues surrounding agriculture. When you combine those traits with his rock-solid work ethic and focus, you will understand why he has been able to establish himself as such a leader in agriculture, both in Texas and abroad. Whether you're deeply involved in agriculture or you’ve never set foot on a ranch, you’ll glean a great deal of value from Jesse’s perspective—his knowledge, passion, and worldly perspective are applicable for any type of endeavor. Jesse and I went to high school together, and even after knowing him for more than 25 years, I still learned a lot from this conversation. We talk about his work with TCU, and he shares some success stories from his time teaching in Panama, Ghana, Nigeria, and Brazil. He explains the importance of community buy-in and how focusing on commonalities and shared goals can help overcome cultural divides. We talk about his family’s history in Texas, and how he is raising his two sons to love and respect the outdoors. Jesse give a few updates on Explore Ranches, and talks about some exciting events they will be hosting soon. We also chat about his involvement with the Texas Agricultural Land Trust, and how conservation easements can be a useful tool for ranchers in Texas and beyond. And as usual, we discuss favorite books and movies, and Jesse shares the best piece of advice he’s ever received, which I especially appreciated. Thanks so much for listening, and I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jesse Womack! “I can have whatever I want - I just have to think about it.” It’s not often that you get to sit down with a man who sees no limits. We live in a society where we’re conditioned to be average. We’re surrounded by restrictions and limitations that compel us to settle for less and drop dreams of a better life. Jesse Elder doesn’t see life in the same way that most of us do. The oldest of five, Jesse was homeschooled and raised in an environment where he was given a free reign. He had permission to explore his passions and his interests - free of the restrictions that most of us face. The freedom allowed him to take ownership of the things that got him excited. And it began to program his mind to view life through a radically different lens. Jesse is the modern day action philosopher. And in this episode, you’ll discover how you can use your thoughts to get more out of your life - whether that’s more health, wealth, happiness, wisdom, or success. So listen in with an open-mind and an open heart. You’re going to hear insights that will challenge the norm. You will hear ideas that go against the grain. But Jesse’s results speak for themselves. Through his Mind Vitamins, his coaching programs, and mentorships, Jesse has helped hundreds of thousands of people live life on their terms. And thanks to this podcast, you can have that experience too.“When you accept yourself 100% unconditionally, when you appreciate yourself unconditionally, and when you actually love yourself unconditionally, the world starts to reflect that - every single time - and you begin to live without resistance - other than the resistance that you’re consciously selecting for the purpose of enjoying the game.” Jesse takes us down all sorts of crazy rabbit holes in this episode. We talk about fear, perception, pain, time, meditation, presence, resistance, visualization - you name it! This powerful conversation reveals the strategies and mindsets Jesse uses to experience true freedom. So get ready to reengineer your life. Get ready to explore how you can use your mind to create the life you really want. I took so much value from this episode and I know the same will be true for you. “Presence is the inevitable state of a human who suspends their addiction to linear time.” Some questions I ask: Was there an experience in your life that made visualization your preferred method of manifesting future - and when was the first time you witnessed the power of visualization in your life? [1:15]Why were you able to evade some of the clouding and distractions that comes from churches, schools, and parents? [6:10]How does the energy of fear feel to you? [16:39]If you introduce calculated struggle in your life, can you access enhanced states on demand? Have you experienced this in your life? [20:35]Why does the mind play resistance on repeat - even when we’ve realized the truth? [22:22]How do you accelerate the process of reengineering your life in a sea of average? [26:00]How does creating new normals expand your self awareness? [29:32]What would you teach a child? [36:10]What role does presence play and how do you cultivate it? [37:39]How do you stay grounded? [47:20] In this episode, you will hear about: The moment Jesse realized there was nothing he couldn’t have. [3:00]When logic can be an amazing tool for you - and what you can do instead if you think you can’t do the things you want. [10:15]The two reasons Jesse doesn’t fear anything anymore. [14:56]Why we live in a society that’s completely designed to create average people. [23:25]The importance of creating new experiences every day. [25:07]Why it’s BS that you become the average of the five people you hang around with. [28:00]How Jesse views time and how this transforms perception and the way you approach life. Productivity is not a superpower, but a result of effective time management. Roman philosopher Seneca said, “It’s not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.” Today, that sentiment is even more true than it was in the Roman years. With the advent of cell phones, social media, and television, we’re more disconnected than ever. That’s why I’m so excited to share today’s guest with you. Jesse Itzler has done plenty of impressive things with his time. From managing Run-DMC to starting and selling profitable businesses, to running 100-mile ultra-marathons, Jesse has had a successful life thus far. But recently, he started thinking about how to better manage his time and channel his intuition. This journey led him to a monastery in upstate New York, where he spent 15 days learning incredible life lessons. On this episode of the Model Health Show, Jesse is sharing the powerful lessons he learned from his experience living with monks. He’s sharing powerful tips about effective time management and focus, how to truly express gratitude, and how to find happiness while pursing your goals. His story is full of incredible wisdom and insight, I hope it will inspire you to unplug, reevaluate your priorities, and live up to your potential. In this episode you’ll discover: How Jesse fell in love with hip hop (and ultimately became the manager for Run-DMC!) The catalyst that inspired Jesse to go live with monks. How to create your own luck and make things happen in your life. The meaning of building your life resume. What the greatest secret weapon we all possess is. How the concept moderation is often used as an excuse. The misconceptions that Jesse held about monks. How to be more intentional about how you spend your time. A simple test you can use to identify what areas in your life to improve. The importance of consistently practicing gratitude. What it means to dodge the arrows. Why Jesse’s wife set up a 40-minute fake commute. How (and why!) to identify the places where you can think best. Why experience isn’t as important as most of us think. What monotasking is, and how you can use it to ramp up your productivity. The importance of saying no. How decision fatigue impacts your energy levels. Items mentioned in this episode include: Take Control Conference
When you feel like you’ve reached your limit, you’re only 40% there. How often do you listen to your body when it says, “I’m done?” We get tired, our muscles get sore, so we throw in the towel. We’re wired to stop every time we start to feel pain. But if we ignore that, we can push ourselves to a new limit. Unless you get uncomfortable, you won’t know what you’re really capable of. That’s why I’m excited to revisit a conversation I had with a new friend who is always pushing himself to the next level: Jesse Itzler. Jesse is ultramarathon runner who is also a bestselling author, award-winning rapper, and an original partner for ZICO coconut water. He is the co-founder of Marquis Jets and a co-owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Jesse was able to take on everything in his life by putting himself first. Like Jesse says in this episode, “So much of business is a reflection of you, and so many of us don’t invest in ourselves.” Learn how to push yourself past your limit to achieve what you never thought possible on Episode 699. In This Episode You Will Learn: About the 40% Rule (1:42) The one time Jesse reached his limit (3:20) How Jesse gained control of his time (4:47) Why Jesse sets aside 3 hours of his day for himself (5:34)

“I LEARN BEST BY JUMPING INTO THE UNKNOWN.” There’s one resource in this world we all take for granted: time. We’re only on this planet for a small amount of time, and we tend to build routines in our lives that makes the days roll by. The next thing we know, we look in the mirror and we’re 70. When you look at that face do you want to see a life of missed opportunities or one filled with experiences you are proud of? If you want the latter, you need to make sure you schedule time for you. Take the time to build your life resume, because that’s what makes our lives much more interesting. When you talk about someone, do you talk about how they clock in to work on time everyday at 9 am and work late hours? Or do you talk about the places they’ve been to, and the experiences they’ve had? On this episode of The School of Greatness, I bring you back someone who has decided to build their life’s resume: Jesse Itzler. Importance of taking advantage of time. Routine make life fly by. Make time for yourself - building life resume instead of business resume. Jesse enjoys living life "out of the box." In fact, he doesn't even have a box. The author of the New York Times bestseller, Living with a Seal, co founded Marquis Jet, the world's largest private jet card company which he and his partner sold to Berkshire Hathaway/NetJets. Jesse then partnered with Zico coconut water, which he and his partner sold to The Coca-Cola Company. He’s also the kind of person that when he wants something he grabs onto the opportunity without delay. He recently decided he needed to detox his mind from electronics and the constant multitasking of today’s world. He ended up living with monks, living in a room as small as a table, and unable to communicate with his family, just to find himself. The lessons he learned most were about the need to make time for yourself and the people around you that you care most about. In the end, that’s where you’ll have the most impact and where your true legacy will come from. Learn more lessons from Jesse’s isolation and time with the monks, on Episode 652. Some Questions I Ask: How was your 15 day digital detox? (8:45) What are you not waiting for? (20:09) If you could go back 20 years, what would you eliminate or add to your life? (21:41) Do you still take 3 hours for yourself every day? (24:44) What do you think you can learn from pain? (29:14) What did the monks teach you about overcoming personal challenges? (32:52) What did the master’s say (about death)? (36:34) Have you and your wife ever struggled with competing with one another? (44:47) Do you ever have a fear that your kids are a little soft? (47:04) What are the things you’ve learned from your time in your monks you didn’t know before? (48:13) In This Episode You Will Learn: When he had the idea to live with monks (10:50) What Jesse didn’t miss during his time away (14:51) How Jesse worked in the music business (17:07) The Kevin Rule (22:28) When Jesse started living this type of life (27:37) The biggest personal challenge he’s faced (30:29) Why death kept coming up in Jesse’s mind (34:40) How he maintains the spark of sexual desire and dynamic of business in his relationship (41:26) The greatest lessons his kids have taught him (45:40) Plus much, much more...
The Twenty Minute VC: Venture Capital | Startup Funding | The Pitch
Jesse Genet is the Founder & CEO @ Lumi, the startup that is used by thousands of e-commerce companies to get world-class packaging at unbeatable prices. To date, Jesse has raised close to $10m in VC funding from some of the best in the business and old friends of the show including Satya @Homebrew, Kirsten @ Forerunner, Spark Capital, Lowercase, Ludlow and more incredible names. Prior to Lumi, Jesse founded Inkodye, a bootstrapped business that Jesse scaled to 7 figures in revenue and was sold in retail stores around the world. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Jesse made her way into the world of startups and VC having bootstrapped her prior business to 7 figures in revenue and being sold in 1,500 stores? 2.) Given that Lumi is Jesse's first VC backed business, does this make Jesse a first-time founder? How did the bootstrapping to 7 figures in revenue with her last business, influence her philosophy and mindset with Lumi? What has Jesse done differently as a result? What are the dangers that Jesse was aware of and looks out for? 3.) What types of companies does an active content strategy make significant sense for? What are the core benefits of a well-executed content strategy? What have been the core pillars to Jesse's success with content? Where does Jesse see many firms going wrong with their content strategy? How does Jesse look to measure the ROI from content? 4.) How was the fundraising experience for Jesse, given the "non-sexy" sector of packaging and supply chains? How did Jesse determine whether an investor was engaged or not? What does Jesse think she did well in the fundraising process? What would she like to improve for the next round? What is the common stereotype that VCs attribute to founders with bootstrapping experience? 5.) How does Jesse think about the benefits of her team being small vs her 10,000+ incumbent challenger teams? Why does this mean she has the advantage? How does Jesse manage the expectations of her employees when no one could do 1/10 of what Jesse does? Have you ever wondered what it takes to create, launch, and maintain a hit podcast? As a listener, it appears as though a couple of people set up some microphones, have a chat, and by that process, an episode is effortlessly created. I remember starting my show, thinking “ I know how to find and talk to interesting people. I’ll buy some recording gear, send out a few guest request emails, and I’ll be a podcaster”. Little did I know that creating a show, and putting it out consistently requires a seemingly endless series of tasks, many of which can be extremely time-consuming, not to mention expensive. In this episode, we take a slight departure from our usual format and present a behind the scenes look into the whole process of creating and hosting a podcast. Our guests Jesse Chappus and Marni Wasserman are the creators of one of the top health podcasts in the world- The Ultimate Health Podcast. After only three years in the game, they have turned their passion into a thriving business that has become not only rewarding to them personally but also financially. What makes their story genuinely inspiring though, is that neither of them had any experience in media or broadcasting before launching their show. It’s also worth noting that they are not only co-hosts of the podcast, but also a happily married couple. Jesse and Marni take us along with them through the history of their health and healing journeys, as well as precisely how they continue to grow their audience and strengthen their relationship and financial independence at the same time. If you are a fan of podcasts or have ever dreamed of starting your own, this is the show for you. Having my podcast has been a dream come true, but it has not been without struggle. Along with Jesse and Marni, I reveal in this episode the rewards and challenges we've experienced, and precisely what to expect if you someday take to the mic and create your own show. As rewarding as it is, it's not for the faint of heart. As of today my show has been downloaded 959,314 times. My goal is to reach 1M downloads by New Years Eve 2017. Would you be willing to help? Our guest this week is Jesse Perreault, Director of Business Development and Digital Marketing Strategist for Soap Media, Inc. Jesse began his first business when he was 15 and quickly began to understand that technology and data would be key to reaching the goals he set for himself. Ironically it was technology and data that helped him to his second realization, quality relationships are better than plentiful connections. His article, "How I Met 500 people in 500 hours," is all about making quality connections that lead to lasting relationships. He believes that learning about 500 people is way more powerful than 500 Linkedin connections. 6:30 - What Jesse learned in a life of entrepreneurship 11:25 - How Jesse came up with his list of 500 people he met in 500 hours. 12:30 - "If I can learn from somebody, what may have taken them several years to learn the hard way, in a matter of an hour...I consider that pretty good growth." 18:00 - How Jesse built a book of business without a "mentality of closing" 23:00 - Jeff breaks down the right reasons to take a meeting 29:30 - Jesse reveals his "Why"! Selling heritage chickens from farmers using holistic management. ------------------------------- Welcome Investing in Regenerative Agriculture, investing as if the planet mattered. By focusing on raising slow-growing chickens entirely on pasture, with practices that create healthy soil and regenerate the land. We luckily had time to discuss many things in the interview! How Jesse went from eating meat, to being a vegetarian (after reading the book Eating animals by Jonathan Safran Foer www.amazon.co.uk/Eating-Animals-Jonathan-Safran-Foer/dp/0241143934). To hunting his own meat and cook it for his family and friends and finally setting up an heritage chicken company. Some more points we discussed: - Our current food industry is really good ad getting a lot of bad food to as many people as possible for the lowest price. - Organic was really good to teach people to look at labels, and now we need to teach them beyond the labels - You need them (the chickens) to be warriors in this system and agents of that healthy change - Half of what we do is rebuild the supply chain the other half is education Largest challenge for impact investors to get into the regenerative livestock space: - their time horizon and return profile! We discussed transparency and how Emmer & Co pioneers with showing the whole process, for instance through their Chicken experience, have a look here: www.emmerandco.com/experience A question for you: who knows any models (selling different parts/crops of a regenerative agriculture farms) in the rest of the world, Europe etc.?
