On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, the Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Christopher Carter wrap up Steelers OTAs with a focus on the 2026 NFL draft class. How should this group be viewed with Germie Bernard still the only player expected to contribute quickly? Can Max Iheanachor, Drew Allar, Gennings Dunker and/or Daylen Everette accelerate their respective timelines and make impacts the way names like Joey Porter Jr., Broderick Jones, Zach Frazier, Keeanu Benton, Mason McCormick and Derrick Harmon have in recent years under GM Omar Khan? And are we sleeping on the potential of specialist players like Kaden Wetjen, Eli Heidenreich and Riley Nowakowski to stand out within their roles? Our duo tackles those questions and more as new coach Mike McCarthy's first team starts to take shape around established stars like DK Metcalf, Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward. The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a new era in 2026, and expectations are rising fast. On this episode of State of the Steelers, Daniel from Steel Curtain Network takes a deep dive into what Steelers Nation should realistically expect from this year's rookie class. Which rookies are locks to make the roster? Who could see meaningful playing time? And which players may need more development before making an impact? We'll also discuss the noticeable changes taking place under Mike McCarthy. Reports from OTAs and offseason workouts suggest a more demanding and intense approach compared to previous seasons. What does that mean for player development, team culture, and the Steelers' chances of competing in 2026? Plus, we examine the future of Alex Highsmith. If the Steelers were to explore trade options, what kind of compensation could they realistically expect in return? Is moving Highsmith even a possibility, or is it a discussion that should be off-limits? On the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the team's moves with its 2023 NFL draft class. Are new deals for LB Nick Herbig and TE Darnell Washington a sign of how much GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy believe in that group over the long run? Will Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton also get new deals this summer? And if so, will those players form the team's new core of stars, replacing the old guard led by Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey and DK Metcalf? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders the defense's future. How long will it remain the highest paid unit on that side of the ball in the NFL? Will the spending outlast the tenures of names like Ramsey, Watt and Heyward in Pittsburgh? Or will spending start flowing more to the offensive side of the ball and names like Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick, Zach Frazier, Jaylen Warren and others who could be up for new contracts in the next couple of years? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Will players burn out toward the end of the season, as Ben Roethlisberger suggested, or is that a silly thought? Next, we discuss Big Ben's record prediction of 12-5, and whether or not that is too optimistic. We offer our early record predictions as well. For the last topic, we dive into Brendan Sorsby's mess in the NCAA, and why it's an awful thing not only for college football, but for sports in general. On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to discuss coach Mike McCarthy's old-school ideas for tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. Can a 1990s-style role within the offense work for that duo with Aaron Rodgers at QB and an improved set of pass catchers including DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, Roman Wilson and Jaylen Warren around them? And how capable is the current roster of playing that more physical style of the past? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks QBs and how pivotal this summer could be for Will Howard as he looks to prove he deserves consideration for the QB2 role next to Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar. Hour 3 with Joe Starkey and Mark Kaboly: Drew Allar and Will Howard are the only quarterbacks at OTAs. Rookies will be in the building next week too. He is trying to fix things with his mechanics. Mike McCarthy wants Allar and Howard to do footwork his way. Mark Kaboly thinks the Steelers have "no choice" but to extend Porter. Mark thinks Porter is likely going to hold-in like T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward. Steelers are poised to "purge the roster of older gentleman" after this season with older players like Cam Heyward and others potentially being gone if this season goes poorly.

Ben Roethlisberger said on his podcast that he thinks Mike McCarthy might be ramping things up at practice too early. Poni says that new coaches have burnt out Steelers teams before, and that Tomlin did this as well in his first year. Most coaches think of this time of year as a time to get the mental reps down, as opposed to ramping up physically. The Seahawks are on Hard Knocks this summer after they won the Super Bowl last season for some reason. The Patriots will be on the offseason Hard Knocks in 2027. Mason McCormick will move from right guard to left guard this season. People say that left guard is more important than right guard, should the Steelers trust McCormick to play the position? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike says that if Baker Mayfield becomes available next offseason, the Steelers should sprint to his agent's office and start working out a contract immediately. He also says that the Buccaneers contract offer to Mayfield was low, and Mayfield's agency didn't want to even respond to it. Florio says it would be wrong for the NFL to take action against Brendan Sorsby before he broke any NFL gambling rules, but he also isn't sure if they will or not.

No film-room cop-outs, no “it depends” hedging. Just quick, honest win-loss calls across the entire schedule, including rivalry landmines in the AFC North and that wildcard trip to Paris to face the Saints. After the picks, we zoom out and talk about what's actually driving optimism right now: a complete coaching reset under Mike McCarthy, what minicamp and OTAs can reveal about tempo and expectations, and why veteran buy-in matters as much as talent. We also hit key Steelers news and roster pressure points, like the Chris Boswell extension and the growing questions around Joey Porter Jr and how a “hold in” could impact training camp.We finish by asking the real question behind every schedule prediction: if 12 and 5 is on the table, what does this team have to change to finally deliver in the postseason? Were Allar and Howard able to make the most of their reps with Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph absent? Does Howard need to unseat Rudolph as Rodgers' primary backup to make the roster? Will GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy get enough value out of Darnell Washington following his extension last week to play alongside Pat Freiermuth for the long term? Is new DC Patrick Graham signaling intent to play more nickel defense with names like Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker and DeShon Elliott in the secondary? On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, the Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Christopher Carter reset the major Steelers offseason storylines following OTAs and minicamp. They start with the quarterbacks and the competition to back up Aaron Rodgers. Is Will Howard the player under the most pressure to impress and hold on to his roster spot for 2026? How far is Drew Allar from competing meaningfully for the No. 2 role? And does Mason Rudolph have any potential to enjoy a renaissance in his 30s as QBs like Baker Mayfield, Gene Smith and Sam Darnold have elsewhere in the NFL? Especially with a known QB developer like Mike McCarthy as his head coach? Later, the guys look at the offensive lines, receivers and defense. How soon will NFL draft picks Max Iheanachor and Gennings Dunker have a chance to start next to established names like Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu? Are Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook in position to win the other starting spots for now? Where does Broderick Jones fit within that calculus? Do you feel better about Mike McCarthy now than when he was hired? Joe and Austin both think YES. It's football in shorts, but it's very different from Mike Tomlin. Joe thinks this gives some cause for hope. T.J. Watt is being forced to move around. Derrick Harmon was good in year one and Joe thinks he will be a great player this season. Joe is far more encouraged.

Mark Kaboly joins the show for the next hour. Mark said on twitter that Alex Highsmith looked like death on Tuesday after Nick Herbig signed an extension with the Steelers. Kaboly says that the Steelers are ‘all in' this year. Mark does not trust that the Steelers would trade Alex Highsmith, even if they were offered a first rounder. He also thinks that the Steelers shouldn't be worried about getting Nick Herbig a lot of reps until his contract extension kicks in next year. More with Mark Kaboly. Mark says that it is a forgone conclusion that Joey Porter Jr. will get paid, it is just a matter of when. He thinks it'll be around $25 million a year for Porter. Nick Farabaugh thinks that Keeanu Benton will get between 16-18 million dollars a year, mark says that it seems like a lot. More with Mark. Mark has a cutout of his own face on his wall, visible to those watching on the video stream. On the Thursday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, the Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Christopher Carter react to news that the Steelers are re-signing Darnell Washington to a long-term contract extension. Was this deal a good one for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy? Or will that depend upon how they use Washington alongside other receiving options like DK Metcalf, Germie Bernard, Michael Pittman Jr., Pat Freiermuth and Jaylen Warren? Is it a surprise that this deal got done before Joey Porter Jr.'s or Keeanu Benton's? And how does this deal impact those negotiations? Our duo tackles those questions. Then takes stock of the team's EDGE rusher situation following Nick Herbig's extension earlier in the week. Could the move necessitate a trade of Alex Highsmith or T.J. Watt before the season? And is the term still investing too heavily in a defense that isn't producing dominant results? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo report from Day 2 of the team's mandatory minicamp at its South Side facility. They react to the news that Nick Herbig has signed a lucrative contract extension. What does this mean for coach Mike McCarthy and DC Patrick Graham's defense moving forward? Could a move be made with T.J. Watt or Alex Highsmith, who both have significant contracts of their own at the same position? Or could GM Omar Khan really be looking to pay big money to all three moving forward? And what implications could Herbig's deal have on negotiations with other 2023 NFL draft class members including Joey Porter Jr., Darnell Washington and Keeanu Benton? Mike McCarthy said Nick Herbig ‘deserved' his new deal with the Steelers, after inking a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid ‘reserve' players in NFL history. It's a $100M+ deal for the Steelers third edge rusher on the depth chart. Are the Steelers going to make it more of a true 3-man rotation if they don't deal TJ Watt or Alex Highsmith? It's hard to take down the snaps for the two players ahead of Herbig.
93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff confirmed that Alex Highsmith was in the building today after he missed practice. The miss came the day after Nick Herbig signed his new contract with the Steelers, which created some skepticism. Jeff told us the team is not exploring trades including Highsmith because they really want to get all 3 players on the field at the same time. Jeff explained the difference between Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin when it comes to practice structure. How will things look with their defense? Jeff said the team is going to Kennywood tomorrow.

Is there a real chance Aaron Donald comes back after the Rams traded for Myles Garrett? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike thinks it will be difficult for Aaron Donald to return to the NFL because it's so much easier said than done. But does he ponder it a little bit more because Myles Garrett will now face a lot of the attention? Mike reacted to the Nick Herbig deal and thinks the Steelers are opening up business for Alex Highsmith or TJ Watt. He said teams always make the call, it's just a matter of how long those conversations are. Mike thinks this will actually strengthen the case for Joey Porter Jr. to get paid this offseason. Mike still thinks the trade discussion with TJ Watt begins with a 1st round pick, noting a lot of the recent trades in the NFL. How complicated would a Watt trade be?
4 straight wins for the Buccos with the offense on fire. Are you starting to believe? The offense has scored 35 runs in the last 4 games. Are the bullpen arms still worrying you?
